The Big Topic in this week's episode, Martin Lewis explains the latest on Car Finance Mis-selling – what's going on and why the wait? Martin unpacks it all, with up to 11 million motorists potentially owed a share of £9 billion due to mis-sold car finance deals. So why haven't payouts started flowing? He explains the key reasons for the delay. Plus, there's a crucial new development: the financial regulator is now urging consumers not only to complain about the original car finance but also to scrutinise and potentially challenge the claims management firms that many have relied on to handle complaints. Martin lays out what you should be doing right now to protect your claim and maximise any potential payout.Adrian Chiles found himself £15 out of pocket after being charged on his credit card for something he didn't purchase. Martin explains the simple, powerful consumer protection that can help you reclaim your money quickly. Whether it's through chargeback or Section 75 protections, he breaks down exactly what to do if you spot an unfamiliar transaction, and how to act fast for the best chance of success. Finally, Martin highlights a worrying trend affecting travellers. He explains how some British Airways customers are being nudged into paying significantly more than necessary for travel permits. If you're planning a trip, this is essential listening: Martin shares how to avoid overpaying, what to watch out for, and how to make sure you're only paying what you actually need.If you want to ask Martin a question, you now can! His Question Time podcast lets you ask Martin absolutely anything and everything (within reason!) – so if you've always wanted to know his favourite ice cream flavour, if he's ever pondered the meaning of life, or have a very complicated question about your personal finances, email it to MartinLewisPodcast@bbc.co.uk.
Ben Lindbergh and Meg Rowley banter about the bunt’s rehabilitation and (17:49) the President publicly picking a side in MLB’s labor battle, then talk to two guests about falling in love with and learning about baseball as adults. First (32:35), beloved BBC presenter and The Guardian columnist Adrian Chiles breaks his baseball silence to expound on how he got bitten by the baseball bug, his long-distance Rays relationship, the loneliness of following baseball from afar, cross-sport comparisons, Chiles-like wonder, and what mystifies him as a fan. Second (1:21:39), Jade Van Kley joins to discuss her journey from registered nurse to baseball content creator, bingeing baseball history, finding an audience for baseball lore drops and video diaries of her first season as a fan, and what fascinates her about the sport. Adrian Chiles is joined by three hugely successful guests - all shining stars in their fields.Victoria Pendleton won it all as a track cyclist, a quite astounding athlete who dug so deep, physically and mentally, in her career, and also in navigating her life after cycling.Cressida Cowell is the writer and illustrator behind - amongst other things - the incredibly successful How to Train your Dragon series. So we have a sports star, and a star author, and in Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell we have someone whose work enabled the discovery of a new kind of star, a discovery which changed astronomy forever. In this episode, Martin Lewis unpacks what's really happening with energy prices and the energy price cap—what it means for your bills right now, what's likely coming next, and the practical steps you can take to protect your household finances. From fixed vs variable tariffs to whether now is the right time to switch. We dive into the surprising world of lost and forgotten money, shining a spotlight on the billions that could be sitting unclaimed in old accounts, refunds, or schemes many of us have simply forgotten about. Martin explores where this money commonly hides, including dormant bank and savings accounts and unclaimed pension pots from previous jobs. Tell Us is all about when you have found money you didn't know you had. From rediscovered savings accounts to surprise payouts decades later, the episode celebrates the unexpected windfalls—including a caller who found money in her knicker draw. Steffan Powell is presenting instead of Adrian Chiles this week. In Mastermind Martin asks him about reclaiming student loan overpayments before guiding listeners through how to check if they've paid too much and how to get that cash back. It's quick, practical, and could put real money back in your pocket. If you want to ask Martin a question, you now can! Saturday Live is a staple of BBC Radio 4's weekend schedule, and for years it was presented by Reverend Richard Coles and Nikki Bedi. Andrea interviewed Richard as he departed in 2023 when the programme moved to Cardiff. The lead presenter post was covered in the interim by Nikki Bedi with different co-hosts. Now, Adrian Chiles has entered the chat, as the new presenter of Saturday Live. Feedback listeners have been telling us what they think of this change. Andrea Catherwood puts your comments to Colin Paterson, Head of Audio for BBC Wales and the West of England. There's also been tweaks to how some listeners access BBC Sounds when using a browser, leading to widespread confusion. We've got an answer about the changes from the BBC Sounds team.Last week Andrea spoke to BBC Political Editor Chris Mason about how the BBC has been covering Reform UK and its leader Nigel Farage. We'll hear what you thought of the discussion. And finally, one listener has nominated John Wilson's interview with Northern Ireland fashion designer Jonathan Anderson, who has recently been appointed Creative Director at French fashion house Christian Dior, for Interview of the Year. It's a strange old time for Elis James. On the one hand he's being called a thirst trap on the carra (the Instagram carousel, for those not in the know); people can't seem to get enough of his floppy hair, his jawline, and his interesting t-shirts. On the other hand, he's getting hammered for slagging off Belgium, and having some harsh words directed at him by one of TV's greatest quiz hosts. What the sigma can he do!?But no worries, it's Rodmas Day! He's off to see Olivia Rodrigo, one of the most famous singers on the planet, whom John's never heard of - he's more of an Avril Lavigne guy.John's been busy chalking up his wins and losses, and working out whether the massive box of carb chews he bought was a good or bad purchase. There's a lovely chat with biker Adrian Chiles, more taxi-related stag antics, and John finds common ground with an emailer's assertion that every journey counts. If you want to praise or berate Elis, or share your words of wisdom with John, it's elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk, or 07974 293 022 on the WhatsApp.And make sure you catch the finale of DI Robbyns in tomorrow's Bureau de Change of the Mind, only on BBC Sounds of course.
You've probably heard it whispered on the train on your way into work. You've likely heard mutterings about it on the concourse at the football. And you've almost certainly heard your grandma claim it at Sunday dinner. Well, this episode confirms the rumours; no one else is doing this.Especially if by ‘this' you mean an extensive chat about spare pants, an extraordinary insight into the ice cream van outside the BBC's broadcasting hub, and an update on a boggle tournament. For this is a show that covers more topics than the world's best stocked library. It's the wonders of Adrian Chiles one moment, grief granola the next.Sitting atop all these topics is a palpable sense of excitement surrounding the nation's longest running opening set of Made Up Games. Johnny JR is currently on set point; can he channel his inner Andy Murray and secure that long-awaiting victory? If you want to throw a topic of conversation into the hat, send it to elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk, or WhatsApp the show on 07974 293 022.

Book Club #126 - The Centrist Dad Handbook - Rich chats to Nico Tatarowicz about the book he cowrote with Jason Hazeley, The Centrist Dad's Handbook. What is a Centrist Dad? Is it essentially just Rich? Why is this a stereotype that seems both fair and ripe for the picking? Is it really so bad to be someone who compromises and what does it have to say about the state of masculinity in general? Would it be possible to do an entire book of headlines parodying Adrian Chiles' columns? Also some interesting chat about the state of comedy writing for TV and why the decline of sketch shows might have serious implications for the future of the craft.Buy the book here - https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/the-centrist-dad-handbook-jason-hazeley/7725471?ean=9781526681997Come to a RHLSTP live! - https://richardherring.com/rhlstp Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. Some of you wanted less not more Wordle chat. You pleaded even to the production team. But the team were scared. For there were Wordle emails that had come in. What if Emperor Robins found out they'd been squirreling such content away from him. It would displease him so. Thus he was presented with it all. And like a labrador at the bowl, he could feast. Feast until unwell. So what of the pleas? With his 3.6 average word score laurel perched on his head, he peered down from his chaise longe. As the fickle thumb of fate turned down, and he yelled ‘No!'. And rather than getting less Wordle, it's more. It's double Wordle. Another 20 minutes 30 seconds of it all across two doses. This'll teach the complainers. The rioters. Eat your wordy gruel and be happy with it. Might assess ‘gruel' as a potential for new starter words actually. Dave write that down. Elis was not consulted on today's content.Anyway, aside from that there's also non-etymological issues at play including Adrian Chiles' pants and the rather frightening thought of ‘what if John was the second coming of Christ'.Remember to subscribe on BBC Sounds for bonus Sounds Bites / Bureau de Change of the Mind every Saturday morning. What does it truly means to be content in your own skin? It's tempting to put so-called "successful" people on a pedestal, but the reality is often much more complicated. Many high achievers are driven by inner turmoil. Adrian Chiles, broadcaster and former host of The One Show, shares insights from his conversations with high performers on BBC Radio 5 Live, many of whom have also appeared on this podcast - from Jonny Wilkinson to Ronnie O'Sullivan. We explore why chasing traditional success often falls short of delivering happiness and why the state of flow - the state of full immersion in the present - is a key to genuine satisfaction, as well as high performance. My book Champion Thinking: How To Find Success Without Losing Yourself draws on some of my favourite interviews over the last six years. In it, I seek to challenge our ideas about 'success', and where peace, joy and fulfilment are truly to be found. 'This book captures the magic of being in flow . . . Highly recommend' RONNIE O'SULLIVAN 'Entertaining and enlightening' MATTHEW SYED 'This book will challenge your thinking on what success truly is and will give you tools to "succeed" in life in the truest sense of the world. The comedian and actor John Bishop is about to head off on a tour celebrating 25 years in stand up - a quarter century since he took to the stage on a whim and ended up one of the UK's favourite stars. The explorer Lucy Shepherd is more likely to be found fighting off venomous spiders than hecklers. For her latest TV series she's embarked on a never before completed journey across Guyana. How did she cope with the threat of trench foot, zero daylight and the ominous warnings from the locals - "don't go, you might not get back"? The Comic and podcaster Grace Campbell is also one for exploration but hers involve the world of dating and parties in her tour - On Heat. She'll be competing on tall tales and ominous warnings, no doubt. And broadcaster and columnist Adrian Chiles will cast a cool eye on proceedings as he does in his much-shared newspaper articles on chewy topics such as home urinals, favourite spoons and the biggie - we can go to the moon, so why can't we stop my glasses sliding down my nose? With music by "the songwriter's songwriter" Ron Sexsmith and "Hendrix of the kora" Seckou Keita. Presented by Stuart Maconie Produced by Olive Clancy

"I just admire people who are happy in their own skin" It can be so easy to put so-called successful people on a pedestal, but the truth is many of them are driven by a sense of disquiet and fear. That's not to cast judgement – it's just a fact, as Adrian Chiles told me. The former Daybreak and One Show presenter hosts a radio show on 5Live where he interviews high performers, and that is certainly a phenomenon he has noticed too. So don't buy into the hype that successful people are special, cos they're not. And being successful is not the recipe for happiness. Flow on the other hand, when we lose our sense of self as we get absorbed in an activity that is enjoyable for its own sake, is inherently satisfying, which speaks volumes when you really explore why – as I have done elsewhere and in my book. This is definitely not just another book about sport and those who happen to be good at it' -- GOLDIE SAYERS 'The intention behind this book is beautiful, and I highly recommend it' RUPERT SPIRA 'The best guide we have to what it means to be human' AMOL RAJAN Order here: https://www.simonmundie.com/book Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Champion-Thinking-Success-Without-Yourself/dp/1526626497/ Website: simonmundie.com YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/YouTubeSimonMundie Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/ Substack Newsletter: https://simonmundie.substack.com/ Learn more about your ad choices.
