Life Outside Poker is a new podcast for PokerNews hosted by Connor Richards that seeks to pull back the curtain on poker players and allow viewers and listeners to get to know them on a personal level. In the 18th episode, Connor speaks with author and psychologist Maria Konnikova about her family leaving Russia to come to the US, writing her first story in kindergarten, being mentored by Steven Pinker at Harvard, meeting Erik Seidel for the first time and her 2020 bestseller The Biggest Bluff that explored her poker journey. Konnikova, a PokerStars ambassador, also talked about her research for an upcoming book into cheating in poker and other games, as well as game integrity rule changes implemented at EPT Barcelona that Konnikova said needed to go even further. "I think what PokerStars has done is amazing. I think you need to go a step further and not have any electronics anywhere on the table. Like, I think phones need to be on the floor, in your bag." "I would actually also ban sunglasses because ... there's so much technology that (that can enable cheating)." This interview was filmed in Spain during the 2024 PokerStars EPT Barcelona festival at Casino Barcelona. The Life Outside Poker podcast is available on major streaming platforms including Apple Podcasts, Spotify and iHeartRadio. Today's guest on the podcast is Santiago Garcia Mansilla who's a poker author, lover of the game, and longtime media member. If you've been listening to CPG for the past year you may recall a Twitter tournament I ran called #PokerGOAT that went a little sideways heading to the finish line.I woke up one beautiful morning with DMs from Erik Seidel (Which under almost any other circumstances would have been a great way to wake up) accusing Jonathan Little of buying Twitter votes so that his book could win more matches, there were all kinds of ugly public accusations from influential members of the poker community, and I ended up posting a public message and having JL on the pod to address all the silliness. The reason I bring this up is because Santiago was the human who initially pitched me the idea coming off the success of the original #PokerGOAT tournament and if the goal was to help sell books and shine a spotlight on some amazing poker books that slipped through the cracks then mission accomplished. If the goal was to get Erik Seidel to come onto the podcast then, well, that one feels like mission impossible at the moment. But the reason the idea seemed so obvious to Santiago is because of his immense love for the poker storytellers of the world. He's a living keeper of the best poker tales ever told and the entire poker world ought to be thankful to have someone as passionate about preserving poker's culture and history as Santiago. In today's episode you're going to learn:How a single poker tournament changed Santiago's life forever.Amazing suggestions for poker books to read, many of which you probably haven't ever heard of.The story and inspiration behind Santiago's book “Cuentos y Relatos de Poker” which, appropriately enough, translates to “Stories and Tales of Poker. And much, MUCH more! And now, without any further ado, I bring to you an author, storyteller, and keeper of poker lore… Santiago Garcia Mansilla. To learn more about the Free Nuffle promotion, visit: https://chasingpokergreatness.com/free-nuffle-promotionNew CPG Cash Game Courses!Preflop Bootcamp: https://bit.ly/Preflop-BootcampFish in a Barrel: http://bit.ly/fish-in-a-barrelNeutralize Flop Leads: https://bit.ly/2OkN8Yt

This week we are locked in and figuring out tells with Zachary Elwood. The episode begins with a look back at Dara's appearance on Zach's show ‘People Who Read People' when the pair broke down lots of useful poker tells. This chat segued nicely into an analysis of Phil Hellmuth's tells (and likely fake tells), deployed in his defeat at the hands of Tom Dwan on High Stakes Duel. From there, the trio discussed Erik Seidel's ninth bracelet win and his first online. The subject then changes to the latest instance of poker ambassador musical chairs as Krissy Bicknell departs from Partypoker while Ben Rolle (bencb) partners with Pokerstars. The trio discuss the significance of Rolle's new role as yet another prolific content creator moving into the brand ambassadorial space. Next up is the hot topic of vaccinations as it pertains to the WSOP who have flip-flopped in recent weeks as to their policy. This provokes a frank chat about the outspoken views of Krissy Bicknell, Alex Foxen and others whose decision not to get vaccinated will likely exclude them from the Series. The show ends with Dara telling us about his upcoming book, another collaboration with Barry Carter, this time on the subject of ICM.

Today's guest on CPG is a living legend in the poker and sports betting world who is a treasure trove of amazing, amazing stories… The one and only Steve “The Bald Eagle” Zolotow.Steve's path to CPG was pretty unique. I was doing my monthly webinar for Poker Coaching when I got a question from “Stephen Zolotow”... whose name I totally butchered because my brain was way too slow in making the connection…It was so slow, in fact, that the first question I asked was, “Oh, are you related to Steve Zolowtow?” Oof.When I finally gathered my wits, I awkwardly asked him out on a date while on the job, he gave me his digits, and the rest, as they say, is history.Steve's career in the skilled gambling arena has now spanned 50 (!!) years and he has routinely found himself smack dab in the middle of some of the most iconic periods of time in all of gambling lore. Here's a little taste to whet your appetite:Steve was a member of the famous Mayfair Club that used to be the favorite haunt of poker legends Erik Seidel, Stuey Ungar, Howard Lederer, Jason Lester, and Paul Magriel.Steve was the first to meet a CalTech analytics wizard who would go on to change the course of the entire sports betting industry.Today's show with Steve Z will eventually be a two-parter (Maybe even more if I can convince him to keep coming back on) because locked away in his mind are way, way too many amazing poker stories to unravel in only a couple short hours. So strap in to your seat and prepare yourself to go on an adventure through the well-lived life of a poker icon… This is Steve Zolotow on Chasing Poker Greatness. To learn more about the Free Nuffle promotion, visit: https://chasingpokergreatness.com/free-nuffle-promotionNew CPG Cash Game Courses!Preflop Bootcamp: https://bit.ly/Preflop-BootcampFish in a Barrel: http://bit.ly/fish-in-a-barrelNeutralize Flop Leads: https://bit.ly/2OkN8Yt

"It's not the kind of job where you can show up and go through the motions and do well-- particularly at a high-roller event. There are plenty of amateurs today that would have been dominant players fifteen years ago." Star poker player Erik Seidel is here, talking poker and much more. Far from just a simple “how to” conversation about poker, Erik and Daniel delve into many subjects surrounding the world of poker. They discuss the complex history of the game, its rapid developments, and the major changes technology has brought to the poker world. An interesting point Erik highlights is how much the level of play has improved with the huge influence of technology as a tool for studying the game. As Erik puts it, his study used to take place while playing, but now a huge amount of preparation must be done before the game begins. In addition to his expertise in poker, Erik is a great music lover and passionate traveler—- things for which he and Daniel share a passion. Support Talking Beats with Daniel Lelchuk on Patreon. Erik Seidel is an American professional poker player from Las Vegas, Nevada, who has won eight World Series of Poker bracelets and a World Poker Tour title. Seidel was born in New York City. He played professional backgammon in his youth. He eventually became a trader on the American stock exchange stock market, and then moved on to poker. Seidel was one of the group of now famous players from the former Mayfair Club in New York City, including Stu Ungar, Jay Heimowitz, Mickey Appleman, Howard Lederer, Jason Lester, Steve Zolotow, Paul Magriel, and Dan Harrington. In May 2015, Seidel won the 2015 European Poker Tour Grand Final €100,000 Super High Roller for €2,015,000. Seidel mentored journalist Maria Konnikova, starting in 2018, teaching her poker and the mindset that it requires. Seidel taught Konnikova Texas Hold'em and eventually she participated in tournaments and won $350,000. In 2020, Konnikova published a book about her experience: The Biggest Bluff: How I Learned to Pay Attention, Master Myself, And Win. Seidel lives in Las Vegas and New York City.

Lee Markholt has been a professional poker player for the last three decades, competing in some of the biggest cash games around while racking up $4.4 million in live tournament earnings along the way. The Washington native had aspirations to continue the family business of bull riding, but a long string of injuries ultimately derailed his career. Fortunately for Markholt, he found his father's poker books and was a quick study.  Markholt cut his teeth in Washington limit games before switching his focus to pot-limit hold'em in the years before the poker boom. In 2005 he won the PPT main event at Bellagio, taking home $220,000 which bankrolled him for high-stakes cash games. He ultimately found himself playing in games as big as $200-$400 no-limit, while continuing travel the tournament circuit. In 2008, he won a WPT title at the World Poker Challenge in Reno for $493,815, and for many years held the record for most cashes on the World Poker Tour. In 2013, he narrowly missed out on a World Series of Poker bracelet, finishing runner-up in the $5,000 six-max no-limit hold'em event for $374,960.Highlights from this episode include his first summer off in 30 years, farm life, the luck and variance of bull riding, broken ribs and punctured lungs, chasing an adrenaline rush, borrowing his dad's poker books, Daniel Negreanu's styrofoam cup habit, getting backed by Erik Seidel and John Juanda, the unlikely win that kickstarted his career, winning a WPT title, the hole in his resume, waiting a whole day to play $200-$400 in Bobby's Room, losing a $570k pot to Rick Salomon, a timely swap with Ben Lamb, chicken slaughter, the 24-hour swimming pool prop bet, Haralabos battles, duck head antennas, and the missing social aspect of poker.

Seth Davies is a 31-year-old high-stakes pro who originally found poker when he was just in high school. The Bend, Oregon-native was a standout baseball player, and was recruited to play at the College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas. Nagging injuries and surgery kept him off the field, but it also allowed him to focus more on his development as a poker player.  Davies spent a handful of years grinding out a living online, and even moved to Mexico to continue playing after Black Friday. In 2016, however, he started to focus more on live tournament after putting together a series of big cashes. Davies won the WPT Spring Classic, and finished second in the Hard Rock Poker Open main event later that summer. He also took third at the WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic for $877,285, second at the EPT Barcelona high roller for $800,044, and he also made the final table of the Super High Roller Bowl Bahamas for a $1,020,000 score. He now has $8.8 million in career live tournament earnings.  Highlights from this interview include the death of poker's middle class, freeroll origin stories, two grand slams in the same inning, a career cut short by injury, college in Vegas, treading water in Mexico, a nudge into the high rollers by Jason Koon, the Oregon money list, the 'work' of poker, a massive EV loss to Erik Seidel, reluctant sports bets, spending half his bankroll on a car, the unbeatable Ike Haxton, achieving maximum focus, and fainting on a roller coaster.

The Houston Midtown Chapter of The Society for Financial Awareness Presents MONEY MATTERS with Christopher Hensley

It's true that Maria Konnikova had never actually played poker before and didn't even know the rules when she approached Erik Seidel, Poker Hall of Fame inductee and winner of tens of millions of dollars in earnings, and convinced him to be her mentor. But she knew her man: a famously thoughtful and broad-minded player, he was intrigued by her pitch that she wasn't interested in making money so much as learning about life. She had faced a stretch of personal bad luck, and her reflections on the role of chance had led her to a giant of game theory, who pointed her to poker as the ultimate master class in learning to distinguish between what can be controlled and what can't. And she certainly brought something to the table, including a Ph.D. in psychology and an acclaimed and growing body of work on human behavior and how to hack it. So Seidel was in, and soon she was down the rabbit hole with him, into the wild, fiercely competitive, overwhelmingly masculine world of high-stakes Texas Hold'em, their initial end point the following year's World Series of Poker. Maria Konnikova is a writer and student of human behavior, and ultimately the point was to render her incredible journey into a container for its invaluable lessons. The biggest bluff of all, she learned, is that skill is enough. Bad cards will come our way, but keeping our focus on how we play them and not on the outcome will keep us moving through many a dark patch, until the luck once again breaks our way. In this episode of Stuck@Om, I'm talking with an old friend, Maria Konnikova. Maria holds a Ph.D. in Psychology, is the author of multiple best-selling books, and is also a professional poker player. We immediately dive into her book “The Confidence Game” about how con artists convince people of unbelievable things. We dissect how movies and TV glamorize the con artists while placing blame on those who were conned. We even touch on our shared love for Sherlock Holmes.    We enter into a much deeper discussion about Maria's most recent book “The Biggest Bluff”, which was released June 23rd. When Maria wrote the book, she set out to write about luck and the things we can and can't control. After reading John Von Neumann's book on game theory, she realized poker was the perfect medium for her exploration into chance. Erik Seidel — a renowned poker player — agreed to let Maria shadow him to learn more about poker. Maria never thought this opportunity would lead to becoming a professional poker player.    We talk about what poker has taught her about emotional control and how you have to learn to identify your emotions to become an expert poker player. The goal isn't to move away from being emotional — because it's human nature. But you must identify your emotions and learn to remove them from the equation. You must also identify your triggers: What types of people make you mad? What interactions make you upset? What excites you or makes you happy?   We further delve into the psychology of poker and the topics of psychological distancing, physical distancing, and how to prevent emotions before you're triggered. We chat about how emotions can be essential to decision-making. Maria also shares about her experience as a professional poker player and what she learned about herself throughout her journey. Our conversation travels deep into psychology, emotion, self-awareness, and the uncertainty of life. Please listen — Maria's captivating story cannot be missed.    Subscribe to THE OM SHOW   Outline of This Episode We talk about Maria's three books What does TV get right about con artists? It’s true that Maria Konnikova had never actually played poker before and didn’t even know the rules when she approached Erik Seidel, Poker Hall of Fame inductee and winner of tens of millions of dollars in earnings, and convinced him to be her mentor. But she knew her man: a famously thoughtful and broad-minded player, he was intrigued by her pitch that she wasn’t interested in making money so much as learning about life. She had faced a stretch of personal bad luck, and her reflections on the role of chance had led her to a giant of game theory, who pointed her to poker as the ultimate master class in learning to distinguish between what can be controlled and what can’t. And she certainly brought something to the table, including a PhD in psychology and an acclaimed and growing body of work on human behavior and how to hack it. So Seidel was in, and soon she was down the rabbit hole with him, into the wild, fiercely competitive, overwhelmingly masculine world of high-stakes Texas Hold’em, their initial end point the following year’s World Series of Poker. But then something extraordinary happened. Under Seidel’s guidance, Konnikova did have many epiphanies about life that derived from her new pursuit, including how to better read, not just her opponents but far more importantly herself; how to identify what tilted her into an emotional state that got in the way of good decisions; and how to get to a place where she could accept luck for what it was, and what it wasn’t. But she also began to win. And win. In a little over a year, she began making earnest money from tournaments, ultimately totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars. She won a major title, got a sponsor, and got used to being on television, and to headlines like “How one writer’s book deal turned her into a professional poker player.” In this wide-ranging conversation Konnikova and Shermer discuss: the balance of luck, skill, intelligence and emotions in how lives turn out the real meaning of the marshmallow test time discounting and how to improve yours rapid cognition and intuition how to improve your use of emotions in gambling and in life what it was like being a woman in an almost exclusively male game, and the nature of human nature in the context of the BLM movement and protests. Maria Konnikova is the author of Mastermind and The Confidence Game. She is a regular contributing writer for The New Yorker, and has written for The Atlantic, The New York Times, Slate, The New Republic, The Paris Review, The Wall Street Journal, Salon, The Boston Globe, Scientific American, Wired, and Smithsonian, among many other publications. Her writing has won numerous awards, including the 2019 Excellence in Science Journalism Award from the Society of Personality and Social Psychology. While researching The Biggest Bluff, Maria became an international poker champion and the winner of over $300,000 in tournament earnings. Maria also hosts the podcast The Grift from Panoply Media and is currently a visiting fellow at NYU’s School of Journalism. Her podcasting work earned her a National Magazine Award nomination in 2019. Maria graduated from Harvard University and received her PhD in Psychology from Columbia University. In today’s conversation, I’m talking to Maria Konnikova. Maria holds a PhD in psychology, is a writer for The New Yorker, and is a 2x NY Times Bestseller as the author of Mastermind and The Confidence Game. In her newest book, The Biggest Bluff, she tells the story of her deep dive into the world of professional poker with mentor and Poker Hall of Famer, Erik Seidel. Over the course of her studies, she went from the idea of planning a 1 year project, as an observer and student trying to understand the psychology of professional poker (while mentoring under Erik Seidel), to being fully immersed and drawn in as a participant who walked away with over $300,000 in winnings. Today, Maria joins the podcast to share insight into the psychology behind high-stakes poker, and how pressure and big money can impact our decisions. We also get into her previous work from her book, The Confidence Game, where she deconstructs ponzi schemes and common themes for identifying them.   So, whether you’re a fan of Texas Hold’em (like me), or simply interested in an eclectic conversation around psychology and money, this was a fun one, and it applies to financial services on many fronts. Maria Konnikova explores how our mind learns, drawing insight from both psychology and poker. Maria has a B.A. in psychology from Harvard and a PhD in psychology from Columbia University. The author of two New York Times bestsellers, "The Confidence Game" and "Mastermind: How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes," Maria writes about psychology and its application to real-life situations. We discuss Maria's new book, "The Biggest Bluff" and what life lessons we can take and apply from the game of poker.   When people ask Maria what she does, how does she like to reply? Her first introduction to the character of Sherlock Holmes by her father Maria got into poker to better understand the line between skill and chance. Where is that line? There's an idea in psychology called the locus of control. How does it work? Poker showed Maria's confidence issues. How did she fix them with poker? How have Maria's ideologies of psychology changed after her journey into poker? Maria explains speech play, playing with words. What is it? How does it work? Erik Seidel listened quietly and then told Maria one phrase: "Less certainty. More inquiry." The lesson from Sherlock Holmes "I both see and observe." How does Maria view failure today? 'Bird by bird' has become an inner mantra for Maria whenever she is feeling overwhelmed. The Gambler's Fallacy is the faulty idea that probability has a memory: you are "due" for a win. Was there a con artist Maria admired for their craft? We con ourselves. What did Maria learn? Intuition and how this is playing out in Maria's mind? What did poker show Maria that she had to unlearn?   LINKS   Maria Konnikova's Website https://www.mariakonnikova.com   Support Act delivering crisis relief services to artists, crew and music workers  https://supportact.org.au/about-support-act/   The Mojo Radio Show Patreon page https://www.patreon.com/themojoradioshowpodcast   Top 10 Cowbell songs of all time https://ultimateclassicrock.com/cowbell-songs/   The Mojo Radio Show website themojoradioshow.com   The Mojo Radio Show on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/TheMojoRadioShowPodcast/   The Mojo Radio Show on Twitter https://twitter.com/tmrspod   The Mojo Radio Show copyright Gary Bertwistle & Darren Robertson   Products or companies we discuss are not paid endorsements. Balles Prize in Critical Thinking, and Mastermind: How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes, an Anthony and Agatha Award finalist. Her new book, The Biggest Bluff, will be out from Penguin Press on June 23, 2020. She is a regularly contributing writer for The New Yorker whose writing has won numerous awards, including the 2019 Excellence in Science Journalism Award from the Society of Personality and Social Psychology. While researching The Biggest Bluff, Maria became an international poker champion and the winner of over $300,000 in tournament earnings—and inadvertently turned into a professional poker player. Maria’s writing has been featured in Best American Science and Nature Writing and has been translated into over twenty languages. Notes: Sustaining excellence = Genuine interest in what they do for a living They follow their curiosity - "It's not about wanting to make a shit load of money." Passionate "They work their asses off" - They work a lot. It doesn't just happen. "Follow your curiosity and obsessions with great rigor." - Brian Koppelman Why write a book about poker when you've never played before? "I wanted to write about chance and the role luck plays in our life." Game theory stemmed from poker Poker is about strategic decision making Why poker? “Poker is a powerful tool to metabolize the luck that surrounds us, and a way to become comfortable with something that is not only all too applicable to our current situation, but extremely difficult for the human mind to process: uncertainty.” Erik Seidel became Maria's personal coach/mentor "There's no one like him." He's stood the test of time. He's been successful at poker for decades... He's evolved with the changes of the game, made adjustments and has won. He's kind and humble. Tips on asking for someone to mentor you: Do your homework - Read everything there is to know about the person before contacting them Be specific with your ask  Make sure you know why this person should be your mentor Figure out what's in it for them Find someone who can help amplify your strengths Don't write a novel in the first email or DM - Get to the point quickly If you can get an in person meeting, do it NEVER say: "Can I pick your brain?" Why playing poker is comparable to writing: Both are deceptively simple on the surface. Anyone can do either, but to do either well in the long term, a certain mastery is needed. Both are subject to the Dunning-Kruger effect, which means that the more someone knows, the more they realize how much they don’t know on a topic, while someone with little knowledge tends to be falsely confident about their understanding of a topic Meta-cognitive process - "I great more aware of my thinking."  You must reflect before reacting. Poker helps you to practice this valuable skill. Make decisions after going through a process of reflection List the things you need to be attentive to What are the relevant factors? What should I be paying attention to? Write it down In order to make better decisions, you must be able to identify your process The ultimate goal of poker and life is to make the optimal decision in that moment The best poker players work incredibly hard: They study hands, they talk hands over with other bros, they watch video, they dissect hands. They build up their self control and their emotional regulation What Maria learned from playing a lot of tournament poker? "It is an extreme sport. You can't take breaks. You're put in a pressure cooker for hours and must make the right decision." "I had internalized gender stereotypes. I was letting myself be bullied. I'd take less active lines because I was scared. I had to overcome that and still need to work on it." Advice: "Work hard. Life gives you nothing. Everything is earned. Life isn't fair. You must work for it. Saying life isn't fair isn't good for you. Think: 'What can I do about it? What can I control?'" Follow your curiosity Read, Read, Read. Read poetry and read fiction

Maria Konnikova is a Harvard and Columbia educated psychologist, author and, in recent years, professional poker player. Over the last year Maria stepped away from her job and entered into the world of poker to write her new book about poker and the balance of skill and luck in life called  The Biggest Bluff.  The Biggest Bluff follows Maria’s immersion in the world of poker, from novice to professional, under the tutelage of one of the greatest players in the game, Erik Seidel. But this is not a book about poker. It, rather, is an exploration of the role chance plays in our lives, and how we can learn to play our best game even in the face of mounting odds. How do the skills learned at the poker table translate to the skills required to live a better, more thoughtful and, ultimately, successful life?  The Biggest Bluff isn’t about how to play poker. For two decades, Annie Duke was one of the top poker players in the world. In 2004, she bested a field of 234 players to win her first World Series of Poker bracelet. The same year, she triumphed in the $2 million winner-take-all, invitation-only World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions. In 2010, she won the prestigious NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship against her mentor Erik Seidel. Her newest book “Thinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decisions When You Don't Have All the Facts" reveals to readers the lessons she regularly shares with her corporate audiences, which have been cultivated by combining her academic studies in cognitive psychology with real-life decision making experiences at the poker table. If you want to learn how to make better decisions in your life this is the episode for you! *Questions for the solo podcast email info@whatgotyouthere.com* Subscribe to the Newsletter- https://bit.ly/2RH3eaD http://whatgotyouthere.com/ NEW SPONSOR TEN THOUSAND- www.tenthousand.cc/wgyt 20% off with discount code "WGYT"  GlobeKick 10% off with discount code “WGYT” https://globekick.com/ MCTco Collagen Protein Bars! www.mctco.com    https://www.annieduke.com/ https://twitter.com/AnnieDuke https://www.facebook.com/AnnieDuke/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/annie-duke-30ab2b5/   https://twitter.com/SeanDeLaney23 https://www.instagram.com/whatgotyoutherepodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/whatgotyouthere/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/sean-delaney-00909190/   Intro/Outro music by Justin Great- http://justingreat.com/ Audio Engineer- Brian Lapres

Here is the first of a series of interviews I did with poker players during the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) in the Bahamas in the mid-January. The content has a poker flavour to it, but I try to keep my interview questions more related to life, and each one that I post contains some element of wisdom that we can learn from, and apply to our journey in becoming someone that doesn’t drink alcohol.Maria Konnikova is a writer, psychologist, and poker player from New York. Maria's two books: The Confidence Game and Mastermind: How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes are New York Times bestsellers. I met her last year in the Bahamas after she’d convinced the poker legend, Erik Seidel, to teach her to be a poker player for her new book The Biggest Bluff, and went on to win a quarter of a million dollars under Erik’s tutelage. In this discussion, we talk about inauthenticity, status, and feeling awkward in social situations, before finishing with a little game I like to call Projection. Steve Zolotow has been gambling for the better part of six decades, and that's only a small part of what has been an extraordinarily eclectic life. Born into a famous family of writers that hobnobbed with the Hollywood elite, Zolotow dropped out of the Ivy Leagues to pursue a life of gambling, drugs, women, and even an acting career. It was gambling that led Zolotow to the Mayfair Club, which started as a bridge and backgammon space before becoming a secret poker club that produced legendary gamblers such as Erik Seidel, Jay Heimowitz, Mickey Appleman, Howard Lederer, Stu Ungar, Paul Magriel, and Dan Harrington. When he wasn't wagering up to $1 million a week with his sports betting operation, Zolotow was playing high-stakes poker with VIPs like Larry Flynt. Zolotow also has two World Series of Poker bracelets, having taken down a Chinese poker event in 1995 and a pot-limit hold'em event in 2001. Highlights from this interview include a family of famous writers, ignoring Marilyn Monroe to play with horses, sharing a bed with Elizabeth Taylor, getting acting compliments from Lee Strasberg, dropping acid and dropping out, getting beaten out of the army, a three-some proposal leads to a marriage proposal, Stu Ungar cleans up in bridge, poker comes to the Mayfair Club, how to Moss-proof your loose change, how X-22 almost lost his Cox, up to $1 million a week in sports bets, avoiding jail time in Las Vegas, a Chinese poker bracelet, avoiding going broke, $2k-$4k stud with Larry Flynt, real estate sticker shock in NYC and SF, losing a $300k pot to Lyle Berman, and why you can't drown a fly.

The multiple New York Times bestselling non-fiction author and New Yorker columnist, Maria Konnikova, dropped by the show back in early 2016 to chat with me about what it’s like to be a contributing journalist for a storied institution, productivity hacks, and her own creative process. Rainmaker.FM is Brought to You By Discover why more than 80,000 companies in 135 countries choose WP Engine for managed WordPress hosting. Start getting more from your site today! This is a fan favorite from the archives that I’m updating because it’s an insightful interview and Maria has also been in the news recently for winning her first premier professional poker title. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction, and as the story goes — reported by Poker News — over “… a year ago … Konnikova decided to learn the game of poker and asked the infamous, Erik Seidel [winner of eight World Series of Poker and a World Poker Tour title] to help mentor/coach her. Her goal … was to play poker for a year, to learn the game, and then write a book about it.” The book was pitched as a chronicle of her “… yearlong journey from poker neophyte to the World Series … an exploration of the balance of luck and skill in our daily lives and how we can become the best decision makers we possibly can.” Lo and behold, an intensive one-year poker crash-course helped her win her first prestige pro tournament and a cool $85K in early 2018. It’s a crazy story, and a fantastic reason to revisit our talk here, and to find her book, The Biggest Bluff, when it’s published in Summer 2019. Her last bestseller — The Confidence Game: Why We Fall for It . . . Every Time — examined the psychology of the con, and as Forbes described the book, “One of the best science writers of our time examines the minds, motives, and methods of con artists — and the people who fall for their cons.” Ms. Konnikova has a PhD in Psychology from Columbia University and has contributed countless articles and essays for The Atlantic, The New York Times, Slate, The Paris Review, The Wall Street Journal, WIRED, and Scientific American, to name only a few. In This Week's Episode:  Maria Konnikova is a contributing writer to The New Yorker, and author of the best selling books The Confidence Game and Mastermind: How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes. Maria gained notoriety in the poker community when she won the 2018 PCA National Championship for $84,000, plus a $30,000 PSPC Platinum Pass. What makes Maria's story so fascinating is that a year before her victory, she had no clue how to play poker, and admittedly didn't even know how many cards were in the deck. Maria's books focus on psychology, and it's application in the real world. She chose poker as the subject of her next book, The Biggest Bluff, to try to understand the nature of luck vs. skill and figure out if we can learn how to tell the difference. To research the book she chose to fully immerse herself in the game and attempt to make it on the live tournament circuit. With the help of Erik Seidel, her story has been one of outstanding success, and she's going to continue with the journey at least until next year when she'll play the $25,000 PSPC at the 2010 PokerStars PCA. In This Episode You'll Learn: 10:52 - How Maria landed Erik Seidel as a coach before she ever read a poker book (and why she targeted him as her ideal coach). 26:36 - The high leverage skill that Maria learned through poker which she now applies to her most important decisions. 28:11 - The 3 reasons why Maria achieved rapid success even though Erik Seidel labeled her as "not naturally suited to poker."
