Bottle Barn Picks Showing New Trends, with Dan Berger

We have a selection of Bottle Barn picks from Dan Berger on California Wine Country with Dan and Daedalus Howell today, wines that Dan says show a trend in the retail wine business. He has brought selections from Bottle Barn that will illustrate this new direction. Dan Berger is our weekly co-host and has also been featured on the show, such as this episode about Gamay Beaujolais. Many younger consumers are looking for something different. Instead of dwelling on doom and gloom because of low sales, there is an opportunity to reset the industry and to rethink things. As consumers change, the industry needs to adapt to changing tastes and provide more variety. Dan calls it a Return to Reality. So, for example, we have seen a rebirth of Chenin Blanc in the last 10 years. Barry Herbst, wine buyer at Bottle Barn, makes sure that the store has lots of choices for people looking for something new. ++++ CWC is brought to you by Deodora Estate Vineyards. Visit Deodora to discover 72 acres in the Petaluma Gap that are producing exceptional Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling. Sip the difference ! ++++ Esporão, Assyrtyko and Pigato The first taste is Esporão, a Portuguese white wine made in the style of Chardonnay. It is aged in wood, but delicately. It has only 13.5% ABV. The region is near the Atlantic Ocean in a cool area. It’s a 2020 and still fresh. It was $30 at first release, but now it is $12.99. The wine has the aging that it needs, it’s ready to drink. The next tasting is a 2024 Assyrtyko. It is a Greek grape that grows primarily in Greece. But this one is from Jim Barry Wines in Claire Valley in Australia. It sells for about $24 at Bottle Barn. Dan thinks the next wave of interest in wine will not be from collectors. There will have to be more diversity in the choices of wines, varieties and origins. Wine today is better than it has ever been around the world, because of better grape growing and better technology. Then they taste a 2024 Pigato from Liguria from the Durin label. It has some lemon blossom in the aroma. It’s delicious and has a lot of personality. Pigato only grows in Italy in Piedmont and Liguria, both are cool climates. Wine makers need to plant grapes like Pigato here in California. Pithos Rosso and Verduno Pelaverga Next is a red, Pithos Rosso. The bottle is 750 ml but has a squat shape. The grape variety is Nero d’Avola and is native to Sicily. The label says both Italy and Sicily. It is red, but light and delicious and not particularly tannic. Last is a 2024 Verduno Pelaverga from Fratelli Alessandria. It is a light grape from the Piemonte province, where Barolo and Barbera also grow. Pelaverga was planted as a blending grape. After 1945, they sent cuttings to UC Davis. Then, the vineyard was bulldozed and became extinct in Italy. But UC Davis had cuttings and now they have replanted it in Italy. It is as light as a Rosé but it has the taste and flavor of red wine. It’s Dan’s favorite recent discovery. Bottle Barn has it for $29.95, down from $45. It has the flavor profile of a good Barolo. Black pepper, violets, green herb, “complexity without knowing what it is.” Pelaverga is very rare here. The importer is North Berkeley Imports. Dan says they are committed to the wines they import.

What Jessica Is Sipping Casa Martinez Wines Bonitas 2023 Chenin Blanc. Light, crisp, a little grassy, with apple in the back. Jessica's words: "That's really good." High praise, coming from her. Casa Martinez is out of the Napa area, founded by Daniel Martinez, whose Pinot Noir called Camila donates proceeds to care for his daughter. Episode Description Ven siéntate, porque this one is going to stay with you. This week, Jessica sits down with award-winning activist filmmaker, top 100 podcaster, sought-after international speaker, and now author Denise Soler Cox for a conversation that had Jessica reaching for tissues before they even got into the chisme. And honestly? Same. Denise is the creative force behind the documentary Being Enye and the upcoming book What Will They Say? (Simon & Schuster, August 18th), and she joins Wine & Chisme to talk about the secrets we carry, the taboos baked into our cultura, and why so many Latinas feel both seen and shackled by the very values that raised us. This is not just an interview. It's a mirror. In This Episode Jessica and Denise get into the real stuff, including how a night at a bar in Miami in the 90s planted the seed for a documentary that would go on to reach listeners in 32 countries. Denise shares the three-part storytelling framework from Harvard professor Marshall Ganz, the one that helped her understand why Being Enyé resonated so far beyond what she ever expected, and how it laid the foundation for the book she has been building for years. They talk about the moment at age 9 that Denise carried silently for decades, the power of finally putting it on the page, and why she believes telling that story was the only way to truly reclaim it. Denise also opens up about losing over $200,000 in speaking revenue when DEI cuts swept through corporate America, and why that painful chapter made the book more honest than she ever thought she could be. Jessica brings her whole self to this one too. She shares her own experience navigating second-gen identity, the guilt of not carrying the same burdens as her first-gen friends, and the realization, mid-read of Denise's first chapter, that Wine & Chisme itself might be rooted in something far deeper than she had ever let herself acknowledge. They also dig into why Latinas are leaving corporate America faster than any other group, what the physics concept of thermal equilibrium has to do with the secrets we keep, and how a preemptive offer from Simon & Schuster on Valentine's Day two years ago became the moment Denise finally stopped settling. About Denise Soler Cox After going from stay-at-home mom to award-winning activist filmmaker, Denise Soler Cox has spent over a decade on a mission to transform how we think and speak about culture, identity, and belonging. Her documentary Being Enyé has been screened internationally and led her to 400+ stages, including two TEDx talks. She has partnered with brands like Ralph Lauren, Amazon, Progressive, and Microsoft, and has been featured on NBC Nightly News, CNN, PBS, Forbes, Telemundo, and more. Beer in the Temple? & What the Bible Actually Says About Alcohol w/ John Anthony Dunne

Okay, so most Christians have been handed exactly one question about alcohol — is it okay? — and look, I get it, but what if that question is not just too small, it's actually the wrong one? Because when you sit down with John Anthony Dunne, New Testament scholar, beer nerd, and author of The Mountain Shall Drip Sweet Wine, and you actually let the Bible speak on its own terms, what you find is a text that is soaking in fermented beverages — daily beer libations poured out in the temple, prophets describing God's restoration of all things as mountains literally dripping with sweet wine, and Jesus showing up to a wedding and turning water into not just wine, but the best wine the sommelier had ever tasted — and John's Gospel puts that right next to the temple cleansing, on purpose, because of course it does. John brings this brilliant "varietal" framework to the whole conversation: just like wine comes in Cabernet, Chenin Blanc, Pinot Noir, the Bible's wine symbolism comes in distinct varieties — blessing, judgment, abundance, sacrifice, joy, wrath — and here's the thing, all of them blend together in the Eucharistic cup, which means the Lord's table isn't a symbol of one thing, it's the thematic climax of the entire biblical story. Bible nerds, craft beer lovers, people who've ever wondered if there's more going on at communion than grape juice in a tiny plastic cup — come on. This one's for you. You can WATCH the conversation on YouTube Dr. John Anthony Dunne is Associate Professor of New Testament at Bethel Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he also teaches courses on wine in the Bible. He completed his PhD at the University of St. Andrews under the supervision of N.T. Wright, which means he has the theological pedigree to back up every bold exegetical claim he makes over a pint. John is a co-host of the Two Cities podcast—a collaborative project featuring 15+ scholars and theologians—and volunteers at St. Croix Vineyard in Stillwater, Minnesota, because of course he does. Does Chenin Blanc-Viognier Make a Good White Blend?

Tonight we have two Chenin Blanc-Viognier white blends. We have talked about both of these varieties before. Both of these wines are about 80% Chenin Blanc and 20% is Viognier. This is a typical blend because Chenin Blanc is bright and acidic and Viognier is fuller-bodied with a hint of sweetness (eventhough it is a dry wine).Chenin Blanc is a very versatile grape that can be made into late harvest sweet dessert wines, dry white wines, sparkling wines, and oaked or unoaked wines. While versatility could be a good thing, it may actually be a bad thing because people don't always know what the wine is going to be like when they get a Chenin Blanc. We have also talked about Viognier before. Viognier in France comes mostly from the Rhone Valley. Outside of France it can be found in North and South America, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. It has some similarities to Chardonnay because it can make a full-bodied white wine. It requires a long growing season to develop, and is known for having lower yields. Viognier has flavors of tangerine, mango, honeysuckle, rose, and peach. Serve slightly chilled from 45 to 55 degrees. Pair with white meats or fish, especially if they are nut encrusted. Tonight, we are tasting:2024 Mbali Chenin Blanc-Viognier. I purchased this at Trader Joe's for $5.99. It is made up of 79% Chenin Blanc and 21% Viognier. The Reverse Wine Snob says it has bright fruit guava, melon, lychee, and honeyed tangerine. Mbali is the Zulu word for flower. The Cheap Wine Finder says this is a wine to buy multiple bottles of. I like his line “keep it cheap”. The wine is unoaked and has 13.5% alcohol.2024 Pine Ridge Vineyards Chenin Blanc-Viognier. I purchased this at Trader Joe's for $13.99. It is made up of 80% Chenin Blanc and 20% Viognier. It's vegan friendly, gluten free, no pesticides, lower alcohol, and has less than 1 gram of sugar per glass. They use a lighter bottle which is better for the environment. Pairs with light salads, seafood, and foods with a bit of spiciness. Great pair with appetizers. Aromas of Kiwi, melon, key lime zest, white flowers, honeysuckle, and jasmine. Flavors of Lychee, orange blossom, peach, citrus, crisp acidity. Clean and bright with no oak and no malolactic fermentation. Fruit comes from Clarksburg, CA. Was voted the #27 Best Buy by the Wine Spectator. We loved the Pine Ridge and scored it a 4. The Mbali was also good and we both gave it a 3. Next week, we are having a Mystery Show. Can we tell what we are drinking. Most importantly, we will go through the reasoning for our guess.

Dan Berger will be there this year at a special Riesling table. There will also be Gewürtztraminer, Chardonnay, Grüner Veltliner, Chenin Blanc, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. Dan likes the festival because white wines are easier to identify by their scent. The 17th Annual Festival This is the seventeenth annual festival. It has had a few different names and rebrandings. There are 64 members in the Association and not all of them produce Alsatian varietals. Dan notices a worldwide evolution in white wine tastes. There are grape varieties showing up today that were not produced in great volumes, because we lacked the technology to make the wine. Anderson Valley is eager to do a white wine festival because white wine is at the forefront of the current evolving trends in wine popularity. Kim Stare Wallace and Brian Pruett are our guests on California Wine Country with Dan Berger and Daedalus Howell. Brian is the winemaker at Dry Creek Vineyards and this is his first time on California Wine Country. Kim’s last time on the show was this episode of March 30, 2022. Dan begins by describing Chenin Blanc and how versatile it is in Europe. Dry Creek Valley is making a sparkling Chenin Blanc to celebrate their 50th anniversary. They love Cremant de Loire, and the Stare family have friends in Loire Valley, so it felt right to make one for the celebration. Brian had never made a sparkling wine before but it worked so well they will make it every year. Sparkling Chenin Blanc They only needed to harvest a couple of weeks earlier than the still wine harvest, in order to get lower sugars and higher acidity. It is actually 90% Chenin Blanc and 10% Cabernet Franc. Chenin Blanc of course also makes a great still wine. Dry Creek Vineyards has been bottling Chenin Blanc for many years. They always called it Dry Chenin Blanc. Her father, is the pioneering winemaker David Stare. He always thought it important to point out the difference between their Chenin Blanc and many others, that veer toward the sweet side. CWC is brought to you by Deodora Estate Vineyards. Visit Deodora to discover 72 acres in the Petaluma Gap that are producing exceptional Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling.  Dry Creek Valley has been bottling Bordeaux-style blended wines “since the get go.” They have made some that favor the Cabernet side, and others like this new one that favor Merlot. They know the vineyards they are using, and they are looking for the oak not to overshadow the fruit or the vineyard. They want the wines to be as complex as possible and support combining with food. Daedalus notices a balance between power and elegance. Kim tells about Dry Creek Vineyard’s decision to focus on Dry Creek Valley as a source for their Bordeaux program. They have all kinds of conditions that favor the growth of Bordeaux varieties. Brian also remembers the influence of the Pacific Ocean that cools us off at night.

This week's show is on South Africa, a much more historic region than many realize, it has been making wine for more than 350 years. Although considered a 'New World' wine region, winemaking and ethos are often more oriented towards the Old World. Its style often straddles the line between New and Old World, offering fruit-driven wines with minerality, earthiness, restraint, and higher acidity.     In this show, I talk about the unique conditions of this country, located between latitudes 27° and 34° south. I discuss the lengthy winemaking history,  and how the Mediterranean climate, old soils, and a unique topography create world class wines of mainly Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, and Merlot.   Photo: South African Winelands/Stellenbosch. Pine Ridge's Chenin Blanc Viognier blend shatters expectations at just $11.99, delivering complexity and refinement that punches well above its modest price tag. This delightful anomaly in Pine Ridge's portfolio combines 80% Chenin Blanc from Clarksburg with 20% Viognier from Lodi to create something both accessible and sophisticated. The Chenin Blanc brings versatility and character—a grape capable of everything Chardonnay can do, from crisp freshness to age-worthy complexity. Meanwhile, the Viognier contributes its signature aromatic lift and bright acidity, resulting in a harmonious blend that breaks you out of the usual white wine routine. What makes this wine particularly special is how Pine Ridge applies premium winemaking techniques typically reserved for their high-end offerings. They harvest slightly early to maintain balance and moderate alcohol (11.5%), and incorporate free-run juice—the highly prized first juice that flows naturally before pressing. The result is a beautifully balanced wine showcasing melon, lemon, peach, apple, nectarine, and tropical fruit notes without becoming overwhelming or one-dimensional.When you're tired of predictable grocery store whites but don't want to spend a fortune, reach for this bottle. It demonstrates that sometimes the most interesting wines come from established producers stepping outside their comfort zones. While prices may vary slightly by market, it frequently goes on sale and consistently delivers remarkable value. The Delicious Monster White 2024 from South Africa's historic McGregor Winery might just change everything you thought you knew about budget wines. This remarkable blend brings together 60% Chenin Blanc, 20% Chardonnay, and 20% Muscat to create something truly special. South Africa has quietly become one of the world's premier regions for Chenin Blanc outside of France, while the inclusion of Muscat—possibly the oldest grape variety known to humanity—adds fascinating depth and character. At just 12.6% alcohol, this dry white delivers wonderful acidity and approachable flavors that make it versatile for countless occasions. What makes this wine particularly fascinating is its provenance. McGregor Winery has been crafting wines since 1948, and despite the significant challenges of shipping wine from the southern tip of Africa while maintaining such an accessible price point, they've created a consistently excellent product. While many South African producers moved upmarket years ago due to shipping economics, McGregor continues to deliver extraordinary value. The 2024 vintage marks the second consecutive year of excellence for this label, proving their commitment to quality regardless of price. The true test of any value wine is how it performs alongside more expensive options, and the Delicious Monster White passes with flying colors. As one taster noted, when served alongside bottles costing three times as much, this wine disappears just as quickly with no complaints. In this episode, we are talking with Julia Moore, Communications Specialist at Bosman Family Vineyards, a South African winery at the forefront of ethical wine production and regenerative farming. With a 26% worker-ownership model, award-winning viticulture, and deep investment in education and inclusion, Bosman is redefining what sustainability in wine truly means. We explore the impact of shared ownership, the challenges and beauty of farming as a community, and the power of giving future generations opportunities beyond the vineyard. From vine nurseries to old vine Chenin Blanc, this conversation is rich in knowledge and purpose. Two wines are tasted during the episode: the affordable Generation 8 Chardonnay, supporting early childhood education projects, and the prestigious Optenhorst Chenin Blanc, sourced from the third-oldest Chenin vines in South Africa. The Dutch set up a supply colony for the sailors of the Dutch East India Company. This was in the mid-1600's, and they soon started producing wine. Some of the areas have very warm climates, similar to Sydney or Perth Australia, but can also cool significantly due to elevation or ocean breezes. South Africa also has a unique feature known as the “Cape Doctor”, which is a gale-force summer south-easter wind that reduces humidity, mildew, and other fungal diseases. However, it can also damage the vines. The wine areas are divided into Regions, then split into Districts, and further into Wards. Specific site location has been less important in labeling, and the emphasis has been on variety (called cultivar). Chenin Blanc is the most planted wine grape accounting for about 18% of all plantings. Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah (called Shiraz in South Africa) are both around 10%. South Africa has a unique red wine called Pinotage (cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut). It has remained around 7% of plantings.“The Oxford Companion to Wine” calls Chenin Blanc one of the most versatile wine grape varieties. It can produce wines that are sweet, dry, crisp, heavier oaked wines, and fortified wines. It is a half-sibling to both Verdelho and Sauvignon Blanc. Like these grapes, it has good acidity. It is known for its capability to produce high vineyard yields, which can result in a less desirable wine. Tonight, we are enjoying two white wines including:2023 Lubanzi Wines Chenin Blanc. This wine was purchased at Wall to Wall Wines for $16.00. The bottle says it is a certified climate neutral wine and “1% for the planet”, and “Fair For Life Fair Trade Certified” means workers have good and fair working conditions. Vintage Wine Shop says Aromas of wild honey and apple pie. Can sip by itself or enjoy with spicy foods. Comes from the Swartland region. It has 12.5% alcohol. 2021 Domaine Lafage Centenaire. I purchased online for around $16.00. Blend of 60% White Grenache (Grenache Blanc), 20% Grey Grenache (Grenache Gris), and 20% Roussanne. Cuvee Centenaire Cotes Catalanes, Indication Geographique Protegee. Takes its name from 100-year-old vines of Grenache Blanc on the Lafage farms only a few kilometers from the Mediterranean on gravelly clay soils. The grapes are harvested in two passes through the vineyard. The first time through, grapes are picked as they first reach ripeness with high acidity. The second pass harvests grapes that are fully ripe and have more rich fruit flavors. The wine is then aged in a combination of tank and new French oak barrels. It has 13.0% alcohol.Next week we will stay in South Africa and taste a Shiraz and a red blend.

Margaret River is only one of the nine regions in Western Australia but is the most popular and most famous of the regions. Margaret River is also somewhat unique in that it is a peninsula bordered on three sides by the ocean. The area has a temperate maritime climate because of the ocean's proximity. Western Australia accounts for only 5% of Australia's wine production, but accounts for 30% of its award-winning wine. Western Australia is the second-oldest wine region in Australia. However, most of the wine was coming from Swan Valley which is located just north of Perth, and is one of the warmest wine regions in the world (warmest region in Australia). Swan Valley was responsible for 90% of Western Australia's wine in 1970, 59% by 1980, and 15%. The percentage of wine production from Swan Valley is still declining.Margaret River is known mostly for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chenin Blanc. Other wines from Western Australia include Shiraz and Riesling from the Great Southern and Frankland River GI's. Tonight, we are enjoying two white wines including:2021 Howard Park Margaret River Miamup Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine was purchased from Wine Styles for $23.75, but I saw it online for upper teens. It received a 92 rating from the Wine Enthusiast. It has aromas of dark cherries, dried mint and tobacco; with textured tannins and nice acidity. At the tasting the flavor got slightly lost in its power but should improve in next couple of years. Decanter gave the wine a 91 and says. Smells of cassis and dried herbs, supple tannins and ripe fruit. Aged 18 months in oak. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Drinking window 2023-2026. Fermented in stainless steel tanks then stored in Barriques and Barrels 20% new and 80% used French for 18 months. 5.7 g/L acidity - 3.54 pH - 0.5 g/L RS - 14.5% alcohol. 2019 Joel Gott 815 Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine was purchased from Costco for $12.49, but I saw that it typically sells closer to $16.00. James Suckling gave this wine a 90 rating, and says aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries, dark cherries, olives, licorice and dried thyme. Medium body with fine tannins. Juicy and savory. Wine Folley - Nose of black cherries and blackberries with notes of clove and brown sugar. Tastes of dark fruit, velvety tannins, vanilla on the long finish. The wine was aged in oak for 18 months in 25% new american oak. Fermented and aged by lots. Lots are blended after aging. This drinks through 2025 so should look for newer vintages. 5.8 g/L TA - 3.74 pH - 1.5 g/L RS - 13.9% alcohol. These wines were similar, but with subtle differences that expressed the two regions. The Napa wine being more fruit forward and having a great deal of vanilla from the American Oak. The Margaret River was brighter, a little toward the red fruit, with more earthiness. Denise loved both wines and gave them both a 4. I also liked both wines, but felt the Joel Gott 815 was a little too much fruit and vanilla. I found the Margaret River wine to be a little more balanced. I gave the Napa a 3 and the Margaret River a 4. It really depends on the type of wine you prefer. Enjoy!Next week we will have a hybrid spotlight, and feature the white wine Vignoles.

Outward Wines is one of the most thrilling, "new wave" wineries to emerge from California's Central Coast, with a style that's focused on energetic, fun-to-drink wines, while still delivering the unique expressions of site specificity. The simultaneous ease and seriousness that define Ryan and Natalie are also reflected in their wines. Maybe it's more like a sense of confidence derived from competence; for example, their Chenin Blanc doesn't scream Chenin Blanc, but then at once, it is precisely Chenin. There is reward in paying attention to Outward wines beyond that first, pleasureful sip, and spending a few minutes listening here to Natalie and Ryan is similarly rewarding. Enjoy, and thank you for listening!
