Send us a textUncorking exceptional value has never been more satisfying than with Trader Joe's Mbali Chenin Blanc V&A 2024—potentially the $5.99 wine of the year. This South African gem delivers a drinking experience that defies its humble price tag, offering complexity and pleasure normally reserved for bottles costing twice as much.Freshly bottled on August 19, 2024 (yes, they actually tell you the exact date!), this wine showcases why freshness matters in value-priced whites. The blend combines 79% Chenin Blanc—that chameleon-like grape originally from France's Loire Valley but now thriving in South Africa—with 21% Viognier. This thoughtful pairing results in a wine that captivates from first sniff to last sip, with the Viognier lending its characteristic aromatic lift and textural richness to enhance the Chenin Blanc's natural versatility. What truly impresses is the layered flavor profile that unfolds with each taste. There's a delicate touch of nectar-like sweetness that never ventures into cloying territory—think biting into a perfectly ripe summer fruit. Peaches, pears, melon, citrus, and honey notes dance together in harmonious balance, supported by just enough body (13.5% alcohol) to make this both a delightful standalone sipper and a companion to lighter fare like chilled seafood. And for those curious, "Mbali" means "flower" in Zulu, reflecting both the wine's South African heritage and its blossoming flavors. Whether you're hosting neighbors on the porch or simply unwinding after work, this custom-created treasure proves that exceptional wine experiences don't require emptying your wallet. Grab a few bottles while they last—wines this good at this price rarely stay on shelves long!Check us out at www.cheapwinefinder.comor email us at podcast@cheapwinefinder.com

Welcome back Wine friends! In this episode, I'm joined by Liam D'Arcy, better known as The Wine Wally on Instagram, a wine enthusiast who has built a thriving online community of over 104,000 followers. Unlike my usual guests—winemakers, sommeliers, or Masters of Wine—Liam is a passionate self-taught wine lover who has made wine education fun, fresh, and approachable. Now, he's taken on a bold challenge: mastering everything there is to know about Chenin Blanc. To put his knowledge to the test, I quiz Liam on the flavors, styles, and top regions for Chenin Blanc, from its spiritual home in the Loire Valley to the powerhouse vineyards of South Africa. We explore the difference between Vouvray and Savennières, the role of noble rot in sweet wines, and the surprising history of Chenin in California. But the challenge doesn't stop there—I throw him into a rapid-fire round of global wine labeling terms to see if he can decipher everything from “Trocken” to “Feinherb.”  Before diving in, I have some exciting news! Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc are both mutations of Pinot Noir. First, let's look at Pinot Gris, also called Pinot Grigio in Italy. These two wines come from the same grape. Pinot Gris originated from Burgundy in the Pinot Noir fields. It can be hard to tell the difference between the Pinot Gris plants and Pinot Noir and they were sometimes used in the Pinot Noir to soften tannins and add acid to the wine. It is now mostly grown in the Alsace region in France. Pinot Gris is a soft, perfumed, and higher body wine than most whites. Pinot Grigio has a lighter body and is normally crisp with high acid.Pinot Blanc is called Pinot Blanco in Italy. It is a full-body aromatic white wine. Because of its fuller body, it is often confused with Chardonnay. It is more popular in Germany where it is called Weissburgunder.Chenin Blanc is one of the most versatile white grapes in the world. It can be made into a sweet white wine, wide range of dry white wines, and also sparkling wines. South Africa is the capital of Chenin Blanc where it is their number one grape variety. It is an aromatic light-bodied high-acid white wine. Can be barrel aged to add to its richness and complexity. Light styles will have lime and tarragon flavors. Heavier styles have peach, nectarine, and honey flavors. Tonight, we are comparing: 2021 Arendsig Chenin Blanc Inspirational Batch 3 purchased at Wall to Wall Wine for $29.99.Next week we will explore a new hybrid grape variety "Petite Pearl". We will be tasting a 2022 Soldier Creek Winery Petite Pearl.

What is a GSM blend and why is it called a Rhone Blend? The G, S and M stand for Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre. The Rhone Valley is the original home of GSM blends and of course the reason why it is sometimes referred to as a Rhone Blend. The Rhone Valley has two parts: the Northern Rhone Valley is known for its steep-sloping vineyards, where Syrah is produced. The Southern Rhone is a much larger region and lacks the steep slopes of the north. This is where the GSM blends are produced. Probably the most famous area in the Southern Rhone is Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Wine Folly says these wines will have more red fruit flavors with notes of herbs. While, GSM blends from California or Australia will have darker fruits with notes of clove.Tonight, we are enjoying two GSM Blended wines including:2019 Delas Freres Cotes du Rhone Saint-Esprit purchased at Costco for $13. It has delicate tannins which is unique for the Côtes-du-Rhône appellation. The nose is classic syrah, with berry fruit, violet and licorice.2018 Skylark Wine Company Red Belly Rhone Blend. This wine was purchased from Wine Styles for $17. It is juicy and creamy black fruits plum, blackberry and crushed cherry fruit coat the entire palate, with intricately woven tannins. We scored both wines a 3 out of 5. Denise would buy both again. I would pass on both. Next week we will explore the differences between Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Chenin Blanc.

BACKGROUND Inspired by Cape Town's radiant energy and creative demeanour, our new premium offering - The Collector's Reserve - is a unique range specially crafted by our winemakers using only the finest grapes from Cape Town's best vineyards. To truly connect the Winelands and City, we have handpicked prominent landmarks in Cape Town and commissioned a vibrant Capetonian artist - Theo Vorster - to impart his vision of these landmarks onto each bottle. This range has been designed as a collector's item for both wine and art lovers alike. WHAT'S IN A NAME The Company's Garden in Cape Town dates back to when fresh produce and supplies were first provided to ships rounding the Cape. Although originally a vegetable garden, it was not long before the first Chenin Blanc vineyards were planted, and today, the Gardens are recognised for their contribution to the Cape's horticultural heritage. The Chenin Blanc is a true tribute to these Gardens and the origins of Chenin Blanc in the Cape of Good Hope. THE VINEYARDS The grapes were selected from two vineyards planted in deep soil with formations of greywacke, rocky area, planted on South-Western and Southern slopes with predominately East-West row-direction to protect the grapes from direct sunlight. Vertical shoot-positioned trellis systems were used with an excellent balance between growth and production. The bunches were exposed to sufficient sunlight for flavour development from an early stage of development. THE WINEMAKING The grapes were hand-harvested in the early morning. The juice was cold-settled with regular lees stirring for three days before being divided into different portions for fermenting. Of these portions 20% was cold fermented in stainless-steel tank, racked after fermentation and left on the fine lees for nine months, while 45% was fermented and matured for nine months in a combination of new and older French oak, 30% was fermented with an indigenous yeast culture in barrels to add complexity, 3% was fermented in Amphoras on the skins for flintiness and 2% was naturally fermented in barrels. All the components were matured on the lees for nine months. Before blending, a barrel selection was done to select only the best barrels for this unique wine. Dan and Mark. Mark McWilliams from Arista Winery is our guest on this edition of California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. Dan's weekly cellar dweller bottle is a 2022 Chenin Blanc from Les Atlètes du Vin in France. $15 a bottle at Bottle Barn. Chenin Blanc is coming back. You can get 7-9 tons an acre of Chenin Blanc and it makes nice wine. Mike says it's refreshing. Mark's parents started as grape growers when he was young. They grew a lot of Cabernet. His mom lived in Burgundy after college and got to know Pinot Noir. They family felt a calling to make wine. In 2002 they started the Arista brand to make wine. They use their own grapes and grapes grown elsewhere. Their Chardonnays have been very highly rated. In December they did a 10-year retrospective tasting of their Chardonnay. In 2013 their new winemaker Matt McCourtney was on the job. Now those wines are aging very well and still have years to go. Arista's style has been to focus on the fruit, not on manipulating the wine to make something that the grapes don't want to do. Acidity is always front and center in their wines. They also have the 2021 Russian River Valley Chardonnay. The appellation wines are the top of their production. Wines like this which are not single-vineyard estate wines, are put together on purpose to combine elements ideally. This wine has so much complexity that it promises to age well. Arista is the shining star of California Chardonnays Steve Jaxon quotes Wine Spectator, which declared, "Arista Wines are the shining star of California Chardonnays." Mark says that's because they use the best fruit and they have the best staff. There is a hazelnut component in the flavors that Dan detects. It resembles Meursault which is a district in Burgundy. The wines have trace flavors of hazelnut. There is also a lemon peel component in the nose. But the wine is only 3 years old. "A great Chardonnay like this really deserves time in bottle," says Dan "Lay It Down" Berger. Mark declares that there is world-class Chardonnay coming from California and Oregon and that Burgundy no longer is the only place that makes the best wine from that varietal.

Read on for a short snippet of what we are covering, but tune in for all the fun!So, what exactly are Noble Grapes? Well, it depends on who you ask! One camp uses the 5 traditional Bordeaux varieties as their list. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot to be exact. We're taking a different view to cover a set of noble vines across red and white wines.Regardless of the information you search on the topic, one thing remains true. No formal definition and no regulatory guidance is defining either.  So, we're exploring Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Merlot for red wine.  And the grape varieties of Chardonnay, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc for white wine. These varieties are revered in the wine world from Alsace, France, to Napa Valley, California. From New York State, to South Africa.  Many somms and wine educators agree, this is THE list of noble grapes! What if my favorite isn't a Noble Grape? If you don't see your favorite in this list of noble grapes wine is made from, never fear! We're hitting the highlights the diversity of each grape variety for you to decide which is your favorite, or which you'd love to explore. Other international varieties can also be considered Noble in their own right. Pinot Gris / Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc, Chenin Blanc, or Viognier for white wine varieties in addition to the 5 Bordeaux varieties we covered. We love the Noble Grapes and we love Noble Wines. They come in many styles, across any price, and have a vast array of required guidelines for winemaking, vineyard management, and labeling depending on where they come from. Williams Selyem winemaker Jeff Mangahas is back on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. Jeff has been on CWC as recently as last February on this episode, and previously here in 2021 and before that, on this episode from 2018. Wine Country Radio GM Melissa Galliani has brought a bottle of Dry Creek Chenin Blanc. Dry Creek is a sponsor of the KRSH Backyard Concert Series and their Chenin Blanc is a popular favorite. “Really refreshing,” says Jeff. Williams Selyem has a rich history as one of the original Russian River Valley producers. Their first commercial release was in 1981. They have been making interesting, small-production wines in Russian River Valley and other nearby regions. Williams Selyem: Russian River Valley Pioneers Williams Selyem worked with the growers in Russian River Valley, such as the Rocchioli and Martinelli vineyards. They produce 52 different wines, in small lots. The are not easy to get so the way to buy them is through the website. Click the logo to visit Davis Bynum Wines. Jeff Mangahas joined Williams Selyem in 2011 and took over winemaking and viticulture in 2014. This year is his 24th vintage. They taste the 2022 Estate Chardonnay. They are also well-known for Pinot Noir and Zin. This Chardonnay is unique because it has 20 different Chardonnay clones all planted together in the field. It presents all the different flavors that are present in the different clones and it makes for a complex wine. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Rodney Strong for info on the 2024 Summer Concert series. Jeff's history as a winemaker started with his interest in science and biology. He majored in molecular and cellular biology at University of Washington. He was interested in research science and worked in cancer research. Wine was a hobby. He moved back east to Princeton University to work in the molecular biology department there. The change to wine as a profession was a romantic idea that he made happen by going to UC Davis for a Masters in Enology. Dan Berger would keep this wine for no more than 2 or 3 years to get it in the glass before the fruit flavors fade. Jeff tells about how they still use foot treading to press some grapes because there is no better method to get the results that he wants.

This episode is about growing Vitis vinifera wine grapes without sprays. Yes, it is possible. My guest is Paul Vandenberg of Paradisos del Sol Winery in Washington state in the US's Pacific Northwest, and he has been growing about 5 acres of vinifera with zero sprays since 2012. Beyond this pretty amazing achievement, Paul has a remarkable wine career. He started by making wine with blackberries, and has been making a living in wine since 1983. He was at Badger Mountain Vineyard when it became Washington's first certified organic vineyard, and he was at Worden's Winery to produce the first organic wine in the state. He was an organic gardener before he could walk, and so maybe it's a fitting climax to his life's work to figure out how eliminate pesticides, fungicides, and anyothericides, whether organic or not, from his vinifera vineyard completely. And he isn't growing some obscure, special vinifera with super powers… they're Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, Sangiovese, Riesling, Tempranillo, Zinfandel, and more. And teaching us how to grow vinifera without sprays is only one of a handful of incredibly valuable insights that Paul shares.  https://paradisosdelsol.com/ Support this episode by subscribing via patreon. California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger celebrates World Chardonnay Day with a selection of Chards and Rosés. Dan has brought two Chardonnays, three Rosés and a mystery wine from Dan's cellar. The first tasting is called Samur, and it's a 2022 Chenin Blanc from the Loire Valley. The producer is Arnaud Lambert. It is on the sweet side, a “patio wine” says Dan. The region is south-east of Paris. It starts on the Atlantic coast and follows the river east over 100 miles. Next, they taste a 2022 Knuttel Family Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley. Bill Knuttel was the winemaker at Dry Creek Vineyards for a long time. This wine won a gold medal at the recent Press Democrat wine competition. It has a bit of both rich and tart flavors. “Sonoma County makes better Chardonnay than just about any American wine region.” -Dan Berger. There are so many sub-regions of Sonoma County that produce different styles of Chardonnay. The Wine Market Right Now Wine sales are down. Why, everyone asks? Is it because millennials have more options for beverages than ever before? Within the last 6 months, the craft brewing industry has collapsed, and sales of wine are flat but not off. It is more seasonal than beer. Beer sells year-round, but wine has summertime specialties like Rosés. When the weather turns hot, everybody wants Rosé. Red wine is not a summertime wine, although Pinot Noir is “going nuts” while zinfandel sales are flat. Maybe that's because people are backing off the high alcohol wines. Other varietals are getting more attention, relatively speaking, such as Syrah, Grenache and many more. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Rodney Strong for info on the 2024 Summer Concert series. Dan describes Chardonnay as kind of neutral flavored, as a grape, it really doesn't have a lot of flavor. It is sort of citrussy and fresh, but not always. If harvested late, it can be rich and bold. But it is a clean canvas for a winemaker. Since Chardonnay doesn't have very much by itself, if it is properly treated in the vineyard and in the winery, then in the barrel, everything you do can change the wine. From year to year, what style does mother nature allow a winemaker to make that year?  Dan notes three types, from three Sonoma County regions, Petaluma Gap, Russian River Valley and Bennet Valley. Petaluma Gap has wind and Russian River Valley has fog. Both conditions slow the ripening so the grape stay on the vines a bit longer. This is also true of Bennet Valley, in Sonoma County. Dry Creek Valley can also produce some great Chardonnay, although it is better known for other varietals. Click the logo to visit Davis Bynum Wines. A German Chardonnay Next is a 2021 Chardonnay from Germany. Chardonnay has appeared in Germany only in the last ten years, as climate change has made Germany warmer. In the future some vineyards that produce Riesling will probably be converted to Chardonnay. They are even making Chapagne-style wines in England now, which was impossible before the warming of the climate. Rosés too, today Rosés became popular after stainless steel tanks were developed that allowed winemakers to keep the temperature down during winemaking. The first tasting is Campuget, a Rosé from France, very dry with a trace of sugar. Another is a 2022 Mas de Gourgonnier. (Mas is an old French word for a farm. -ed. note)

George Walker III, a recipient of the Roots Fund scholarship, shares his incredible journey and the impact it has had on his education and career in the wine industry. The Roots Fund, founded in 2020 by Carlton McCoy, Aikimi Dubeau, and Tahir Habibi, aims to provide opportunities for black individuals in the wine industry. George expresses his gratitude for the support he has received from mentors like Matt Nauman and Carlton McCoy, who have helped shape his education and career. George recounts how Matt Nauman, the previous president of Wade Sellers, suggested that he would benefit from working harvest in Burgundy. Taking this advice to heart, George reached out to Carlton McCoy, a master sommelier and the founder of Lawrence Wine Group. To his surprise, Carlton responded and invited George to his home, where they had dinner and discussed the wine industry in Napa. This connection eventually led to George becoming one of the first recipients of the Roots Fund scholarship, allowing him to participate in educational programs and gain valuable experience in the wine industry. George emphasizes the importance of being open and accessible to others who are seeking opportunities in the wine industry, particularly for black individuals. He believes in paying it forward and being a vessel for others, just as he has been supported and mentored by many people throughout his journey. The conversation then shifts to the topic of racism in the wine industry, specifically in Burgundy. George asks Carlton about his experience as a black person in Burgundy, to which Carlton responds that France has never been a place for racism. In fact, France has embraced American talent, including jazz musicians, who found success and acceptance in the country. The discussion then turns to winemaking and the different approaches that winemakers can take. George highlights the diversity and versatility of wine, comparing it to an art form where the same grapes can produce completely different wines in the hands of different winemakers. He appreciates the beauty of wine and the ability to express both the land and oneself through the winemaking process. They then delve into the details of the wines George is currently making. He introduces the 2022 Chenin Blanc, a wine made from 100% organic fruit sourced from the Wilson Family Vineyard in Clarksburg. George explains that his goal with this wine is to pay homage to the history of wine growing in California and bring Chenin Blanc to the forefront. He praises the versatility of Chenin Blanc and its ability to appeal to a wide range of wine drinkers. The conversation continues with a discussion about the 2020 California Cabernet Sauvignon that George is producing. He explains that in a normal year, they would have produced a Napa Cab, but due to the circumstances in Napa, they decided to make a California Appalachian Cab instead. The majority of the grapes for this wine come from the Bedrock Vineyard, with some additional grapes sourced from Mendocino and Paso Robles. George describes the wine as true to type, with a touch of acidity to bring freshness and liveliness to the wine. The conversation then shifts to consumer preferences and the influence of well-known brands in the wine industry. George shares an anecdote about how during the COVID-19 pandemic, customers who typically purchased wines in the $12 to $18 range started buying $100 wines like Austin Hope and Caymus. He acknowledges that there is something for everyone in the wine world and encourages wine drinkers to explore and discover other producers who are doing incredible work. They discuss the importance of educating consumers and introducing them to new wines and styles. George believes that there are amazing producers out there who deserve recognition and appreciation beyond the well-known brands. He emphasizes the need to have fun and explore different wines, stepping outside of one's comfort zone. The conversation concludes with a reflection on the impact of storytelling in the wine industry. George expresses his belief that it's not just about the celebrity status or the marketing, but about what's inside the bottle. He believes that when people taste a wine that expresses something unique and tells a story, they will be compelled to try it again and share their experience with others. Overall, the conversation between George Walker III and Carlton McCoy highlights the importance of mentorship, diversity, and exploration in the wine industry. They discuss the beauty of winemaking as an art form and the ability to express both the land and oneself through the process. They also touch on consumer preferences and the need to educate and introduce wine drinkers to new and exciting wines. It is clear that George is passionate about spreading the gospel of "dope juice" and making a positive impact in the wine world.

Plus, we end with the story of why Stompie is called Stompie. We'll pick up our conversation where we left off, talking about how Chenin Blanc allows him a little bit more creativity than Chardonnay, and why this desire to make something outside the box led him to become South Africa's first producer to receive the special invite to the ‘Brutal!' club of winemakers, a label that is very much a part of the global natural wine movement today.    Hosted by Charlotte Alsaadi. Steve Doerner is Winemaker Emeritus at Cristom Vineyards in Oregon.Steve discusses his shift from being a Biochemistry Major at UC Davis in the mid-1970s to his first Job working for Josh Jensen at Calera Wine Company. Steve arrived at Calera for the 1978 harvest, the first vintage for Pinot Noir at Calera. Josh had begun making wine at Calera in 1975, first planting a Pinot Noir vineyard in 1974. Josh hired Steve after a blind tasting test that included tasting a La Tâche. Steve worked at Calera for a total of 14 years. During that period of time, Steve met some of Josh's peer/friend group in Burgundy, a circle of people that included Jacques Seysses of Domaine Dujac.Steve recalls his early years working at Calera in its limited facilities, working highly physical harvests that left him questioning if this was really the career path for him. He talks about his early days tasting wine, mostly Zinfandel from California. He also talks about utilizing different fermenting techniques in response to certain winemaking tools, and his growing knowledge of the techniques being implemented in Burgundy by the likes of Jacques Seysses and others. Steve comes to the conclusion that in California in the 1980s, Pinot Noir was often treated like Cabernet in the wineries. He also concluded that this was problematic, and began teasing out the nuances of practical meaning from adages he heard in Burgundy.A serious accident left Steve questioning his relationship to his job, but his perception of his worked changed after his first trip to Burgundy. Steve encountered Jacques Seysses as an outsider to Burgundy who was actively experimenting with different ways of doing things with his winemaking. Steve developed a friendship with Christophe Morin, who eventually worked for many years at Domaine Dujac, and who later died in a motorcycle accident Although Calera was in an isolated location, Steve tasted fairly regularly with other top American vintners, including Dick Graff of Chalone, Jeffrey Patterson of Mount Eden Vineyards, and Ken Wright. Eventually Josh and Steve began to make white wine at Chalone, including from Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, and Viognier. Josh brought back Viognier from France to the United States. And Steve recalls going to France to speak with vigneron in the Rhône Valley about Viognier. For the red wine from Pinot Noir, they contended with very low yields from the Chalone vineyards, with limited access to water. Steve leaves Calera and transitions to working at Cristom Vineyards in Oregon from 1992, encountering a supportive winemaking community in Oregon. He recalls his early days at Cristom, and his first harvests there. He talks about planting vineyards at Cristom, and how they went about it. He also shares his realization that over the years the ripeness levels in the vineyards have changed, and that he has been rethinking vineyard planting decisions that were made in the 1990s. He also believes it is now possible to achieve ripeness at higher elevations in their vineyards. He further asserts that keeping the vineyard yields low, with a lot of thinning, is less necessary than it once was.Steve discusses where Cristom is located in the Willamette Valley, inside what is now the Eola-Amity Hills AVA. He talks about the influence of wind from the Van Duzer Corridor, and also the Columbia Gorge. He asserts that lower humidity in the area implies lower disease pressure, and points out that due to the wind, fruit typically gets dry on the vine after rainfall in the vineyards. Steve notes that the soils at Cristom are primarily volcanic, and that they retain water due to their clay content. He contrasts this situation with the sedimentary soils that are found elsewhere in the Willamette Valley. Steve goes into detail about the ripeness levels in the vineyards, and how they have changed since the 1990s. He notes that more extreme vintages have occurred more recently. He talks about the differences between vineyard designate Pinot Noir wines from Cristom: Louise, Jessie, Eileen, and Marjorie. He talks about using less whole cluster for Pinot Noir at Cristom than he did at Calera, and how this affects the taste of the resulting wines. Steve speaks at length about different aspects of whole cluster use, including specifics of stems in the vineyard, in the fermenter, and in the taste of the final wines. He also considers the fashion for whole cluster winemaking more recently. He also addresses approaches to slowing down a Pinot Noir fermentation, and why that is important. He touches on cold soaks, and what they do to microbial activity. He notes that he is opposed to cold soaks, and also opposed to inoculating with yeasts. He explains his winemaking philosophy in approaching phenomenon like reduction. He talks about his approach to racking Pinot Noir, and how he tries to leave Pinot Noir alone during maturation in the winery.Steve talks about making Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and Viognier in Oregon. He addresses how the climate during the vintage year affects the Viognier grape. He talks about flavor and ripeness vs. alcohol level in finished wines, and about alcohol levels of the wines at Calera and at Cristom. He generalizes about the climate conditions of Oregon and California, and draws a contrast between Burgundy and the growing conditions in both of those states. He also advises keeping in mind that “Burgundian” encompasses a wide array of winemaking techniques, as wine is made in so many different ways in Burgundy. He notes that there was a global fashion for wines of power and bigger fruit, but points out that elegance has become more embraced by wine drinkers, while at the same time Pinot Noir has become more and more popular over the course of his winemaking career. This episode contains a segment recalling the relationship of Josh Jensen with Jacques Seysses of Domaine Dujac, as well as also recounting the work of Christophe Morin in the vineyards of Domaine Dujac and elsewhere. This episode features commentary from:Jacques Seysses, Domaine DujacJeremy Seysses, Domaine DujacJean-Pierre de Smet, co-founder of Domaine de l'ArlotThe interview with Steve Doerner was originally recorded in June of 2018.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This week we welcome Richard Bruno from Vinum Cellars. Richard pursued his interest in wine by going into the restaurant business in 1985. Working with Master Sommelier Larry Stone at Rubicon Restaurant in San Francisco as a waiter and bartender gave him the opportunity to taste rare and exciting wines from around the world; he also learned a lot about making the right decisions. It almost seems that Richard and Brian lived parallel lives for a while and most likely at least drank in the same places. But with plans to become a winemaker, Richard then UC Davis to learn Viticulture & Enology in 1994. While at Davis Richard met Chris Condos, where they bonded over their love of Chenin Blanc and other obscure grape varietals. They wanted to do things differently so in 1997 they started Vinum Cellars on credit cards and the help of friends & family. Richard also worked for various wineries from Bonny Doon Vineyard in Santa Cruz to Rosenblum in Alameda, Alexander Valley  Vineyards in Sonoma and Folie a Deux in the Napa Valley.
