In this episode, Allie Kochinsky is joined by Brittany Shepard, founder of The Sentimental Decorator and co-host of The Sentimental Twist, for a conversation on what she calls storykeeping, the practice of weaving memory, meaning, and personal history into the everyday rhythms of home.Together, the two explore the quiet power of ordinary rituals: setting the table without occasion, using heirlooms instead of saving them, and gathering in ways that feel lived-in rather than performed. Brittany shares how her perspective on home was shaped by the women who raised her, and how continuing their traditions through objects and simple acts of hospitality has become a way of carrying their presence forward.Brittany and Allie also talk about the difference between hosting and hospitality, the emotional weight objects can hold, and why repetition rather than reinvention is often what creates a true sense of home. Greetings and Happy Early Summer! We are continuing our Summer Read of the Hidden Lamp again this year. Every week we will explore a different koan story from the collection. If you would like to follow along, check out the calendar page for up to date information on the koan selections. On Monday night during the live online meditation event, I will give a dharma talk themed around the reading for the week and then we will have time for discussion. I will post the talk here too. This past Monday we started the Summer Read with Case 19 from the Hidden Lamp: The Flower Hall on the Buddha's Birthday. The nuns of Tokeiji were famous for their beautiful and elaborate flower decorations on the Buddha's birthday. Master Yodo, the abbess of Tokeiji wrote a verse for this occasion:Decorate the heart of the beholder, for the Buddha of the flower hallis no where else. The Buddha's birthday, also called Hanna Matsuri or the flower festival, usually takes place when the flowers of Spring are in full bloom. In the ceremony we decorate a flower bower with fresh flowers (in Oregon we would do this on Mother's Day and the rhododendron's were often a main feature). The baby buddha is placed in the center of the flower bower, in a bowl of sweet tea. During the ceremony each participant is invited up to the altar to bathe the baby buddha, while we chant a simple mantra together. To me this ceremony feels ancient. I imagine it is an evolution of a much older ceremony celebrating mid-spring, the abundance of new life, flowers and perhaps the Great Mother. For the story of the Buddha's birth starts with Maha Maya, the Buddha's mother. It starts with Maha Maya's great dream, reminding us that this very life, this very moment is sourced from the great mystery and is dream-like in its nature. As many of you know, I could dwell on this theme of dream and the Great Mother for a long time. But today, I want to highlight another aspect of this koan—the quality of care.We meet Yodo and the nuns of Tokeiji decorating the buddha hall. Taking great care to make a beautiful and elaborate offering of flowers. Flowers which will start to whither and die as the ceremony ends. Flowers that speak the language of beauty and innocence, of desire and abundance, of the purity of our buddha-nature.The activity that the nuns are engaged in is the activity of their life.We often wonder how to bring our meditation practice off of the cushion into our daily lives. Here the nuns demonstrate this—with care—they say through their actions.Care is how love is expressed.Care involves attending, meeting the moment. Care awakens appreciation.Through our care, our life becomes an offering, a gift. And we are the recipients as well as the ones making the offering. In monastic life we have ceremonies and activities that give form to the expression of care. From the way we place our shoes on the shoe rack, to choosing the serving dishes for a meal to making flower arrangements for the altars, we have these opportunities to express love through our actions.I was never formally trained in the art of Ikebana, flower arranging. But I did learn some basics over the years, two of which stick with me and can be applied to so many areas of life in exploring care and beauty. The first is that space is just as important as the physical elements of the flower arrangement. So as you choose your vessel, and begin to arrange the flowers you also consider the space between the flowers, leaves and branches. In flower arranging the space is alive. The second principle is that you appreciate how the different elements grow in nature and accentuate them. You recognize that you are also an active participant in creation, so you listen to how the elements are in relationship to each other and respond.I find these two principles invite care, attention, love, appreciation and open me up to seeing the beauty in life itself. What if we moved through our days with an awareness of the space that surrounds us, with an appreciation that we are in relationship with everything we encounter. That it is our life.Listen to the dharma talk for more explorations of this koan in relationship to care, nurturing the heart and seeing our buddha nature. And as always you are invited to take this story and practice into your life. This week notice beauty, practice appreciating your life, see your life as an offering, a gift. What happens when you do?Awakening happens in relationship. Hope to see you in-person or on zoom sometime soon. Starting this coming Monday, we will return to studying the teaching stories of the women ancestors found in The Hidden Lamp.Weekly Online Meditation EventMonday Night Dharma — 6P PT / 9P ET Join weekly for drop-in meditation and dharma talk. Welcome JUNE. In this June Akashic Guidance episode, Ashley opens the Akashic Records and channels guidance for the month ahead, exploring the energetic themes of June and what they are being asked to pay attention to. This month brings messages around refinement, authentic expression, conscious creation, and learning to filter life through what feels true within. Ashley also shares the astrology for the month, important energetic dates and openings ahead, and the Codes of Destiny to watch for in June. She explores why embodied feeling and emotional awareness matter more than ever right now, and why this is a month to look within before looking outside of yourself for signs and answers. As June moves us into fire season energetically, Ashley shares what this means, how to move through the fire in alignment, and how to work with the energy rather than against it. Plus, Ashley shares what she's loving lately, a recommended workshop to complete before the Solstice, and how to prepare for a new experience opening after the Solstice. Before selecting colors, furniture, or décor, the most important step in creating a beautiful space is organizing how the space will function. In this episode of Got Clutter? Get Organized!, Janet M. Taylor is joined by interior designer Felicia Wallace Benton to discuss why organizing before decorating leads to better design decisions, fewer costly mistakes, and spaces that truly support everyday living. Felicia shares how understanding how a room will be used — who will use it, how traffic will flow, and how it connects with other spaces — can transform the entire design process. From avoiding oversized furniture purchases to designing rooms that work for multi-generational households, this conversation highlights how organization and design must work together to create spaces that are both beautiful and functional. Whether you are refreshing a single room, redesigning your home, or planning a renovation, this episode will help you create spaces that reflect your vision while supporting your daily routines. In this episode you will learn: • Why organizing should happen before decorating • How functionality influences design success • Common decorating mistakes that organization can prevent • How to evaluate how a room should function before redesigning • Simple ways to improve layout, flow, and everyday usability Guest: Felicia Wallace Benton Interior Designer, Designing Your Vision Website: https://designing-your-vision.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/designingyourvision4/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@DesigningYourVision Start Here Work with Janet, download guides, shop organizing tools, and access all resources: https://direct.me/janettheorganizer Work With Janet Book a virtual organizing session: https://janetmtaylor.trafft.com/ Organizing tools & recommended products: https://linkly.link/2Zsk2 Listen & Learn Podcast website: https://gotcluttergetorganized.com/ Follow the podcast: https://linkly.link/2ZskN Connect & Community Website: https://janetmtaylor.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/janettheorganizer/ Facebook Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/livinglifetotallyorganized Learn more about your ad choices. First up, did you know? Dean is a secret science nerd, and he’s super excited about the Artemis II moon shot! Is Mars next on the list? This morning’s first caller has a ceiling that’s beginning to crack in his split-level house, so he’s wondering when the right time is to call in the experts — and he’s hoping it wasn’t yesterday. Our next caller is from Thousand Oaks and has had two plumbing leaks in 31 years, so she’s wondering if it’s time to replumb the whole home. Got a paver project like our next listener? He’s using an angle grinder to cut the stone and is wondering about the best way to go about doing this. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ever have one of those homeschool days when your brain feels completely empty? We've been there too. In this episode, we share a long list of practical, creative hacks that can revive your homeschool when energy is low. From painter's tape timelines and DIY history games to geocaching adventures, urban walking tours, and quick art projects, we explore simple ways to bring curiosity back into learning. We also talk about focus tools, seasonal nature activities, and building systems that make everyday homeschooling run smoothly. If you need fresh inspiration or a reminder of the good ideas you already have, this conversation is for you. Tune in and start your own “good ideas” list today. To help you put these ideas into action, here's the full checklist of practical homeschool hacks we discussed:Adhesive whiteboard that sticks to your wall. Lap-sized whiteboards for math & handwriting practice & general doodling. Painter's tape for timelines + write events on index cards and tape to wall.Make-your-own Chronology game (this is an actual card game, but we made our own with index cards)Combine geocaching with local geography & history.Watch urban planning videos — you learn so much about how neighborhoods are constructed!A spin on this — put your own area into the Youtube search bar with “buildings” or “urban planning” or other terms. We've been learning about specific Portland buildings & landmarks this way. Also: look up the origin of place names in your area. Great local history!Cookie sheet with magnets for car trips with littles (and other uses)Make a FOCUS-FIRE-FAST-FUN grid for triaging tasksA little thing that makes a big difference: assign pencil sharpening to a weekly time slot. Get a good sharpener! Also — scissors and tape in every room.Have the kids do wet-on-wet watercolors and then cut into bookmarks. Leave a stash on every bookcaseTake an afternoon to create playlists for yourselves: one for afternoon tidy-up chores, one for instrumental music while reading, one for songs you play to transition between daily activities, etc.Check out Joshua MacNeill's book: 101 Brain Breaks & Educational ActivitiesHave a day for choosing the best squishy stuff for playing with during readalouds - what does each kid like best? Beeswax, Sculpey, modeling clay, silly putty, playdough, wiki stix. Make the texture exploration an activity by itself. With spring coming — plant some peas & sweet peas! An old custom in some regions was to plant your peas on St Patrick's Day. They like cold soil. Cheap, easy activity for rapid payoff.Decorate by cutting out frames from black card stock, stick to clear contact paper, make designs out of pieces of tissue paper. Easy holiday window decor.Look up local foraging groups. Might be able to join a walk & learn about edible plants.Learn about wildlife corridors. Can your yard become one? Some easy ways to assist. Pick one species you'd like to help. Look up its needs: for example, if a butterfly: what host plant is native to your area? What nectar plants attract it? What else might it need – a dish of water with stones for perching on? Or - mason bees. Various birds. Start with a single species and learn how to spot it. Notice who else shows up. A literary tie-in for older kids: Read The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer. A nice tie in – a poetry anthology like The Wonder of Small Things (edited by James Crews) or Sing a Song of Seasons: A Nature Poem for Each Day of the Year (Fiona Waters & Frann Preston-Gannon). Consider propping on a bookstand turned to each day's page.In that vein – any kind of seasonal nature book is great to prop open. Like a field guide turned to a bird your kids might encounter. Make a list of short stories you'd like to discuss with your kids. Keep this on hand for times when you want a short-term literary activity — say, between longer books, or whenever life is filling up with appts/distractions/new baby/etc and you want something self-contained. A good short story immersion can span a single afternoon (but will likely stick with your kids forever).Melissa's daughter keeps a visual reading journal: she chooses a sticker to represent each book. Dear Reader,It's with great pleasure that I can announce the launch of my new course Let's Decorate! - bright ideas for painting everyday objectsIt's been something I have been working on in the background before I gave birth and over the last few months have been slowly chippping away a bit at a time to bring it to completion. I must admit I didn't think I'd ever finish it working in such short bursts, but I'm so glad I peservered and can now tell you all about it. Read on for more details…This course arose from a desire to be surrounded by beautiful, everyday objects in my home, featuring favourite subjects like wild flowers, fruit and elements from the natural world. I was particularly inspired by a visit to a sunflower field last year and this got me wanting to paint them on everything.I've always loved to paint murals, back in my twenties I was a mural artist in a school and it was actually how I started dating Tony when he commissioned me to paint a mural on his flat walls. A job that should have taken a week took 3 months as we would find all sorts of things to chat about!I digress…back to the courseWhat you'll doIn this course we'll look at 3 types of acrylic paint- heavy body, soft body and acrylic gouache, noting their qualities and discuss what kind of project they would suit best. I'll then guide you through four projects to paint and give you detailed steps for sourcing materials, preparing surfaces and painting your objects. Working in acrylic paint to transform a space is a great way to brighten your home on a smaller scale and through painting everyday objects there's also a special sense of accomplishment that comes with customising your space. On the course you'll gain inspiration and practical know-how to bring your decorative ideas to life and work on similar pieces for your home.If this sounds just up your street or you're curious to find out more then please hop over to the purchase page here. Any questions just ping them over to me or go to the bottom of the sales page for FAQ.Thanks for reading and I look forward to speaking again soon,PS Seasalt & Serpentine Paid community-I'm offering a 25% discount for you- watch out for the next email with the coupon code. The idea of traditions can feel heavy and like once you do it you're stuck doing them forever… I wanted to do a fullll podcast episode that would give you lots of ideas that feel light and fun and can be so special to your family. Things that make you all feel more connected… and that feel so unique and important to your family. It's easy for parenting to feel like a constant sprint sometimes… school, sports, meals, naps… it's a refreshing change to lean into special things that your family does. I realized how precious this is when one of my kids wrote a little paper about one of our traditions in 1st grade. You realize… this is the stuff they remember and the resinates deep. This whole thing is about pausing these busy life days we are all living and thinking about emotional anchors we can create throughout the year. Traditions don't have to be rigid. They don't have to be expensive. And they definitely don't have to be perfect. Today we're talking about a fresh way to think about family traditions: Some traditions you repeat every year Some you rotate Some you try once and just remember Some you write down so your family builds its own memory playbook Because what kids remember most isn't perfection… it's connection. HOLIDAY TRADITIONS The goal here isn't more pressure. It's creating emotional anchors in the year. VALENTINE'S DAY TRADITIONS Love notes on door After dinner game Decorate Valentine boxes & make notes for each other Secret Santa but Valentine style Blow up heart with balls and prizes to find inside Kids serve you dinner on Valentine's Kids go out to dinner with you on Valentine's HALLOWEEN TRADITIONS Say Trick Or Treat at the front door on Halloween in Costume Do family costumes and everyone plans them together Decorate the inside and/or outside of the house in a certain theme or go all out together Give out something specific like full size candy bars Set-up a game for trick or treaters to play to win an extra candy Pumpkin carving or pumpkin painting - invite everyone over THANKSGIVING TRADITIONS Gratitude time capsules, write notes and open them the next year Family volunteer Saturday Everyone puts what they are most thankful for in a hat and everyone guesses who said what Wear "thankful" shirts Family interview night, record what everyone is most thankful for - especially grandparents Coloring page to color all day on kids table CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Put lights around your neighborhood on Christmas Eve Ornament tradition, collecting special ones when you travel or making them Cutting down or picking out tree together right after thanksgiving Advent calendars Reindeer food Drive to see Christmas lights Decorate Christmas cookies Matching PJs FOURTH OF JULY TRADITIONS Do something nice for a veteran or someone that helps our country or community Stop by fire station with breakfast or something nice USA pride anything - decorate car windows, we do our golf cart Find neighborhood event at a park or create one NEW YEAR'S EVE TRADITIONS Family Vision Board Night Bang pots and pans Highlights of the year jar in kitchen- add to it throughout the year and read at end of year NY planning and goal setting Write a letter to yourself of what would make you consider next year a big success, if what happened, if you felt like what Watch the ball drop together with blowers Plan vacations for the year BIRTHDAY TRADITIONS (FOR KIDS AND PARENTS) Birthday breakfast interview... ask the same five questions every year Go around the table and do full toasts about why you love the bday person Everyone decorates their room before they wake up Presents first thing in the morning Smash cake in the face One present from each person in the family One nice thoughtful card from each person in the family MONTHLY TRADITIONS One long Sunday dinner with games New experience day - try one new thing you have never done before One service project day, or just a few hours Hike, outdoor long walk together FAMILY DINNER TRADITIONS Rose, Thorn, Bud — best part, challenge, what you're excited about Theme Dinner Nights with music and food from different countries THE TRADITION NOTEBOOK IDEA Instead of forcing traditions to be permanent, create a small family notebook where you write down ideas you tried… funny moments… things you want to repeat someday. This removes pressure and keeps the magic. Keep it somewhere easy like kitchen or nightstand. Traditions evolve as your family grows. Traditions are not about doing more. They're about choosing moments that slow life down… even just a little. You don't need to create ten new traditions this year. You don't need Pinterest-perfect ideas. Start with one small thing that feels natural to your family. Maybe it lasts one year… maybe it becomes something your kids talk about forever. The real goal isn't perfection. It's creating a feeling… a rhythm… a sense that no matter how busy life gets, your family has small anchors that bring you back to each other. And over time, those moments become the story of your family.

Hey Clutterbugs! Today, Sabrina Soto and I are chatting decluttering, interior design tips, and intentional living hacks to create a home you're proud of, without perfectionism, overwhelm, or a massive budget.Let's make your home feel like a sanctuary, boost your self-esteem, and design a life that actually supports your nervous system. Sabrina's origin story is WILD (yes, it starts with a burrito and ends with her finding an HGTV job on Craigslist at 4am), and it turns into the best reminder: you don't have to be ready or perfect—you just have to start. We get into the real connection between your home and your life: how clutter drags your energy down, why “a clean home” isn't vanity (it's self-worth), and how small changes, like creating simple “vignettes,” setting up visual cue zones (smoothie bar, coffee bar, cleaning caddy, workout corner), and refreshing a space with a pillow or lamp—can change how you feel every single day. If you've ever felt embarrassed to have people over, overwhelmed by your kitchen, or like your bedroom is anything but a sanctuary, this one is for you. We are wrapping up our special three-part holiday series! For the finale, Liz takes the mic to share her absolute favorite holiday episode from the How to Decorate archive. Liz chose Episode 386 with the delightful Carson Kressley (Queer Eye, RuPaul's Drag Race). Liz loves this episode because Carson embodies the spirit of "lavish yet achievable" holiday cheer. In this hilarious and tip-filled conversation, Carson breaks down how he turns the day after Thanksgiving into a tree-trimming party, his secret for serving fast food on silver platters, and why he color-codes his guest towels. Quick Decorating & Hosting Takeaways: Match the Decor to the Room: Don't force a red and green color scheme if your room is blue. Carson suggests tailoring your holiday decor to the existing room palette (e.g., aqua ribbons and silver ornaments in a blue room) so you don't have to overhaul your daily decor. The "High-Low" Party Menu: You don't need to cook for days to be a great host. Carson's signature move is serving Kentucky Fried Chicken tenders stacked beautifully on an antique silver platter with a homemade dipping sauce. Color-Code Your Guest Rooms: To keep laundry organized when hosting a crowd, assign a specific towel color to each guest room (e.g., the blue room gets blue towels, the lavender room gets lavender towels) so you always know where clean linens belong. America is divided on when to decorate for Christmas. Krisitn Bentz talks about when she decorates for the holiday.
This episode of The JB and Sandy Show dives headfirst into the quirky, beloved Austin tradition of decorating trees along 360, where creativity, nostalgia, and a dash of “bah humbug” collide. JB and Sandy reminisce about their own neighborhood decorating adventures, the rise of entrepreneurial teens offering post-holiday cleanup, and the fine line between festive fun and shameless self-promotion (“Don't do it to promote your company. Decorate it with the company's name on the tree. I've seen that. That's tacky. That's a little douchey.”). The conversation shifts as Tricia brings a heartfelt story about the Texas Lottery's annual holiday message—reminding parents that scratch-off tickets, while tempting as stocking stuffers, are still gambling. The crew's banter is as sharp as ever: “If I give one as a dollar gift to somebody else and they win a million bucks, I'm going to scratch their eyes out and take that ticket right back!” The stakes get higher with tonight's $775 million Powerball, and the playful promise: “JB, if I win, I'll be sure. I'll give you a million.” The laughter is real, but so is the reflection on what makes a gift truly meaningful. Sports fans will love the deep dive into Longhorn highlights—how technology lets you relive the best moments in minutes, and why some plays are worth watching fifty times. The hosts marvel at the magic of instant replays and the thrill of seeing Arch Manning's touchdown run from a whole new angle. “He has good, good technique and fundamentals, both hands on the football. That's some good coaching right there, probably from his dad or his uncles.” The episode wraps with a pop culture tease—no spoilers!—and a reminder that sometimes, the best moments are the ones you share with friends, family, and a little bit of Austin weirdness. Don't miss this episode packed with laughter, local flavor, and genuine insight. Subscribe now, leave a review, and share The JB and Sandy Show with someone who loves a good story and a great tradition. The next big moment is just a play—or a scratcher—away!

What would it mean if your home could feel like Christmas — without being buried in stuff? This episode is a reminder that peace and beauty don't come from more décor, but from the heart and atmosphere you create within your walls. Let's talk about decorating with intention — adding warmth, joy, and Christ-centered calm to your home this holiday season. Because when your home feels peaceful, everyone in it does too.
Flat surfaces have a funny way of becoming clutter magnets — until the holidays hit, and suddenly we want them to look styled, intentional, and Instagram-worthy. The problem? It's easy to go from “simple and festive” to “every inch covered.” In this episode, I'll teach you my signature LDHTR method (Layers + Depth + Height + Texture + Repetition) — the simple formula that works on mantles, shelves, tables, even pianos. You'll learn how to: Define the purpose of your surface (function + beauty!) Start fresh with a blank slate Curate your items by category or story before styling Layer intentionally for balance and flow Take a photo to see what your eye might miss in real life By the end, you'll know exactly how to create surfaces that look polished, personal, and ready for the holidays.
