Election officials and poll workers are our friends, family, and neighbors. They are dedicated workers who manage a vital part of our democratic infrastructure. But because of a massive election disinformation campaign led by former President Trump and his allies, they have become the target of threats, intimidation, and harassment — adding to their already challenging job.“Swamp Stories” host Weston Wamp sat down with a few of the election workers — local election officials and a poll worker from both parties — participating in our Faces of Democracy campaign to discuss building trust in our election processes, protecting elections workers from threats and harassment, and much more.Issue One launched Faces of Democracy to amplify the voices of election workers. The campaign aims to educate the public about how our elections work, as well as advocate for the necessary improvements to our elections — like regular and sufficient funding from Congress for state and local election administration, and increased protections for election workers and their families from violent threats.Learn more about our Faces of Democracy campaign.
Weston Wamp is a father of four, a public school parent, and an entrepreneur with the right experience in business, education, and government to serve as Hamilton County's next Mayor. Weston currently leads a national nonprofit, the Millennial Debt Foundation, which he founded along with other business leaders and a cohort of members of Congress to fight wasteful government spending. After years as a Founding Director of Lamp Post Group, which invested in dozens of local small businesses, Weston co-founded the $18 million Dynamo Fund, one of the best known investment funds of its kind in the South. Gov. Bill Lee trusted Weston as one of his first two appointees to the Tennessee Board of Regents, which governs the state's 40 community and technical colleges. Weston serves on the Board's finance committee, stewarding an annual budget of nearly $1.5 billion. Weston and his wife, Shelby, live in Lookout Valley with their four children: River, 7, Griffin, 5, Aldridge, 3, and newborn Smith. Election audit results are about what we'd thought, but who cares? The topic of this episode is “How do legislators raise money to run for Congress?” My guest is Weston Wamp, who is the Founder at https://www.millennialdebt.org/ (Millennial Debt Foundation) and a Senior Political Strategist at https://www.issueone.org/ (Issue One). He hails from Tennessee, and ran for Congress in 2014. If his last name is familiar to you, that is because he is the son of former member of the House Zach Wamp, a Republican who represented Tennessee's 3rd congressional district from 1995 to 2011. Weston, like his father, knows a thing or two about how fundraising has come to be a major part of getting to Congress and staying there. And I should add that he is the host of the program, https://www.swampstories.org/ (“Swamp Stories,”) which has examined the effects of fundraising on Congress.
In episode 28 of Swamp Stories, Weston chats with former Rep. Donna Edwards (D-MD) about what it was like being a member of Congress, how she would fix our broken political system, and the RV trip that she took across America alone after the 2016 election to better understand the rise of Donald Trump.
