Would you let your kid fail on purpose?John St. Pierre and Rich Hoffmann dig into a book called Raising an Entrepreneur and its 10 rules for parenting future founders, then talk through which ones actually hold up in real life. From a hockey injury that taught a bigger lesson than the scoreboard to an 11 year old selling car washes and protein balls door to door, they get into why letting kids lose, embracing adversity, and supporting even the smallest passion matters more than protecting them from failure. They also question whether straight A's help at all, why a non-parent mentor might matter more than either of them expected, and flip the whole conversation around to ask what these same rules mean for raising intrapreneurs inside a business. What you'll walk away with: why letting your kids lose is one of the most important things you can do for them, why supporting a passion matters more than whether it becomes a real business, why straight A's and traditional schooling might not nurture entrepreneurial thinking, why kids respond better to a mentor who isn't their parent, and how these same parenting principles apply to leading intrapreneurs at work.Hosted by John St. Pierre and Rich Hoffmann, Entrepreneurs United is built for founders and leaders who want straight talk on building businesses that actually work. What value does a farmers market have for a community? Is it just about the transactions, or is there more? A study funded by a USDA grant and involving UW-Madison researchers focused on that question. Kiley Allan finds out about the results from Bret Shaw, UW-Madison Communications Specialist. Shaw says the researchers conducted a national study to provide market operators with actionable data to boost attendance, increase consumer spending, and better communicate the community value of farmers markets to stakeholders. The research identified six consumer categories, highlighting the three groups most likely to visit: the "highly engaged" (who love the social atmosphere and local experience), the "health-focused" (who prioritize organic, local, and non-GMO produce), and the "emerging interest" group. The newly identified "emerging interest" demographic consists of younger shoppers who are less focused on buying raw ingredients to cook at home and more interested in the social environment and ready-to-eat prepared foods. To accommodate changing consumer preferences, markets are increasingly featuring vendors that sell prepared foods and specialized items (such as hot breads, baked goods, and meats) rather than strictly traditional raw fruits and vegetables. With over 8,600 markets operating nationwide, farmers markets are increasingly recognized by community leaders as vital hubs that promote healthier eating habits, foster a sense of local belonging, and build resilient regional food systems. What are the 'dog days' all about? That's the starter conversation with Stu Muck on a Monday morning. The forecast isn't offering much moisture this week to offset all the heat expected. Stu explains the cycle the states caught in. In June the White House announced that John Rich, or Big N Rich country duo fame, became a USDA envoy working with farmers and landowners nationwide. Rich says he was personally caught in a land dispute with the state of Tennessee, so he understands the disadvantage farmers face when someone wants their land. He'll report directly to USDA's Brooke Rollins and the President. He explains what he's heard so far. Last week the WI State Fair Park announced that John Yingling would be retiring after 16 years of service, most recently as board chair. Pam Jahnke visits with the fair veteran who started his relationship with the fair when he was a kid in the neighborhood. Yingling says he never liked going to the fair with his mother. He explains how that didn't stop him from making the WI State Fair, a big part of his life.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Are you managing AI adoption on your team, or is it managing you?In this episode, hosts John St. Pierre and Rich Hoffmann tackle one of the biggest leadership challenges right now: helping employees embrace AI instead of fearing it. They dig into why change resistance almost always comes down to a perceived loss of privacy, trust, individuality, or job security, and why leaders need to name that directly instead of dancing around it.Rich shares eight AI use guidelines he built with a coaching client, covering everything from opt in consent for recordings to being transparent about AI shaped outputs to rewriting things in your own voice. John and Rich also get into piloting small AI use cases for quick wins, capturing institutional knowledge into SOPs and competency models, hiring for AI embracing talent, and mentoring employees into higher level work. What you'll walk away with: a clear framework for setting AI ground rules on your team, practical ways to pilot AI without overwhelming your people, how to turn tribal knowledge into documented systems before it walks out the door, what to look for when hiring for an AI forward culture, and why focus groups and open communication matter more than a top down mandate.Hosted by John St. Pierre and Rich Hoffmann, Entrepreneurs United is built for founders and leaders who want straight talk on building businesses that actually work. What would it look like if every leader in your business actually had clarity? In this episode, John St. Pierre and Rich Hoffmann do something different: they build a clarity checklist live on air, with no script and no prep. What comes out of it is a set of principles any entrepreneur or leadership team can use immediately to pressure-test where clarity actually exists in their business and where it doesn't.They cover the six principles of clarity: concise communication using a minimum number of words, consideration of both facts and feelings, written clarity that's accessible to everyone who needs it, a one-page or less standard, the right people in the room when clarity is being defined, and confirmation that everyone understands. They also get into why most quarterly goals fail before the quarter ends, why personal clarity through a 30-year life plan has to come before business clarity, and how AI can function as a real-time clarity coach. You'll walk away knowing the difference between thinking you have clarity and actually having it, and with a framework to start testing that in your business today.Listen here: https://entrepreneursunited.us/links/Hosted by John St. Pierre and Rich Hoffmann, Entrepreneurs United is built for founders and leaders who want straight talk on building businesses that actually work. Iran remains a chaotic blur of strikes, broken communications, and shifting demands, with the IRGC now insisting any deal must include leaving Hezbollah alone in Lebanon, and Aaron says it's starting to look less like 3D chess and more like the U.S. being pressured. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin confirms some of the Delaney Hall protesters were bussed in from Portland, Oregon, as a curfew holds in Newark. Ron DeSantis pushes his case for eliminating Florida homestead property taxes, arguing tourist revenue can absorb the cost in a way no other state can replicate. Graham Platner loses The View and Cory Booker in the same news cycle as his Maine Senate campaign crumbles under the weight of sexting allegations, Nazi tattoo history, and a suspicious app account. Aaron closes with Rep. Alina Voss from NX Atomics stops by the Energy News Beat PodcastThe title “The Math Ain't Mathing: Why America Needs Nuclear Now” was derived from a comment Alina made on the podcast. I was very impressed, and as we talked, she made some great points. I am going to follow up with her company and introduce them to some folks. We need to have more nuclear reactors online tomorrow, and we need real solutions.1. Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and NX AtomicsThe core focus of the conversation centers on NX Atomics' development of small modular nuclear reactors. Key points include:NX Atomics aims to produce the cheapest SMRs on the market (targeting $20 per megawatt hour vs. $90 for traditional Gen 3 reactors)They're targeting a prototype by 2030 and first-of-a-kind deployment in the early 2030sThe company employs German nuclear engineers with 10-15 years of research backgroundThey're using innovative 3D metal printing technology to manufacture reactor components more efficiently and affordably2. Data Centers and Energy DemandA significant discussion about the explosive growth of data centers and their energy requirements:Data centers are increasingly competing with farmland for space in the MidwestTexas ERCOT has 220 gigawatts of applications for new data center power, but only 54 gigawatts of peak capacityData centers are using eminent domain to acquire land, displacing long-time residentsSMRs and data centers are positioned as complementary solutions (”go together like PB&J”)3. Nuclear Energy's Public Perception and MarketingAlina discusses the challenge of rebranding nuclear energy:Older generations associate nuclear with bombs and warGen X often thinks of disasters (Three Mile Island, Fukushima, Chernobyl)Younger generations, especially men, are more pro-nuclearLiving near a nuclear plant exposes you to less radiation than eating a banana annuallyNuclear plants have high approval ratings among nearby residents4. Energy Policy and SubsidiesCritical examination of current U.S. energy policies:Wind and solar have been artificially inflated by subsidies and can't compete on their own meritsWind turbines last only 8 years; solar panels last ~15 years and 95% end up in landfillsThe farm bill subsidizes ethanol, which is counterproductive (takes more energy to produce than it yields)Ethanol damages vehicles and reduces fuel efficiency by ~4 miles per gallonThe need to reform subsidies to support more sustainable, long-term energy solutions5. Global Energy Competition and ChinaDiscussion of geopolitical energy dynamics:China is rapidly expanding nuclear capacity (50+ reactors with 20+ more planned)The U.S. has 94 reactors and is falling behindIP theft and supply chain vulnerabilities are critical concernsEnergy independence and dominance are central to future global competitivenessSecretary Chris Wright's pro-nuclear stance is seen as crucial for U.S. energy policy6. Transmission Infrastructure and Grid ChallengesThe underlying infrastructure problem:Aging transmission infrastructure is a bottleneck for moving power from generation to demandThis is a bigger issue than just generation capacitySMRs offer distributed generation that can bypass some transmission challenges7. Regenerative Agriculture and Land UseBrief but important discussion about sustainable farming:Current agricultural policies favor monoculture corn production with heavy chemical inputsRegenerative agriculture and sustainable land management are better for both economics and healthThe tension between subsidizing farmland for food vs. for energy productionWe are seeing that Data Centers, AI, Wind, Solar, and Agriculture are more closely aligned than you can imagine. Land and water grabs are ongoing in the U.S., and they are second only to the political corruption we are seeing in our systems. We covered the Levelized Cost of Energy and the importance of its design. I loved the fact that they are 3D printing and getting the system designed faster rather than laterCheck out their website: https://www.nxatomics.com/Connect with Alina on her LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alinavoss/It would be fun to get Alina and Grace Vanderhei (Stankie), who was on the podcast as a former Miss America and a nuclear engineer, together to discuss the future of nuclear. This week, I reached out to John Rich to get him on the podcast. While it is a long shot, we need all of the air cover we can get to protect our farmers, farmland, and people's homes from the Wild West of Data centers being overrun by eminent domain on people's homes and farms. We need more future leaders and companies like Alina and NX Atomics.Check out the Energy News Beat SubStack https://theenergynewsbeat.substack.com/A shout-out to Steve Reese and the Reese Energy Consulting group for sponsoring the Podcast https://reeseenergyconsulting.com/.Data2 if you have any business systems, can you trust A? A fresh calendar won't change your life—your habits will. We kick things off with a light jab at New Year superstitions and quickly get into the real drivers of progress: discipline, honest self-audits, and the courage to adapt when your industry shifts under your feet. If you've felt the pull of comfort or the lure of blaming “the system,” you'll hear why we're doubling down on ownership this year and stacking more “lottery tickets” by writing, showing up, and doing the work even when it isn't glamorous. We also share what it takes to perform live when the weather fights back, why we refuse to lean on tracks, and how authenticity reads from the stage—especially on a freezing New Year's Eve. From there, we rewind our most-watched conversations of the year and unpack why those episodes hit so hard. Names like John Rich, Jason Aldean, Kirk Herbstreit, Hulk Hogan, and Rob O'Neill brought stories that stuck with us, and we lay out a bold wish list for the next run—think Peyton Manning, Jeff Foxworthy, Dennis Quaid, and Dale Jr. If you've got a guest in mind, we want to hear it.The heart of this one is about people and priorities. We talk circles of trust, boundaries, and how to spot relationships that drain more than they give. When is it worth trying to reconcile, and when is a “hard cut” the healthiest move? The answers aren't soft, but they are simple: loyalty matters, reciprocity matters, and your time is precious. Traditions can be fun—black-eyed peas, cornbread, cabbage—but they're not engines for change. Systems are. If you're stepping into a new year, consider this your nudge to set goals you act on today, not after midnight. If this hit home, tap follow, share it with a friend who needs a reset, and drop a comment with the guest you want to hear next. And if you're feeling generous, leave a quick review—it helps more folks find the show. The Try That in a Small Town Podcast is powered by e|spaces!
