“As a Black Muslim woman, it gets very exhausting to exist in a world that projects onto you.” In this episode, Vanessa Taylor, a Philadelphia-based writer and the founder and editor-in-chief of the Drinking Gourd, a Black Muslim literary magazine, discusses the paradox of Black Muslim womanhood - being simultaneously hypervisible and invisible. Within that nuance, Black Muslim women carve out spaces where they embrace their multiple identities as Black, Muslim, and women while resisting the impulse of others to reduce their multi-dimensionality. Vanessa chats about this spirit of resistance: how Black Muslims challenge anti-Blackness within the Muslim community and Islamophobia within the Black community, and how she, as a Black Muslim woman, navigates her multiple identities to take up space and create spaces where she and other Black Muslim women can thrive.    Find links and show notes at https://breakconcrete.com/bc039. Vanessa Peck has worked as a nurse for more than 12 years. One day during a regular ED shift, a mom and her 17 year old son came in. The son had behavioral issues and was quite agitated. The ED attending ordered medications to calm him down, but the mother asked to give her son his cannabis treatment. Vanessa didn't think much of it till she came back and the boy who has severely agitated 20 minutes prior was watching TV in bed and laughing with his mother. This incredible transformation led Vanessa on a search for what cannabis and CBD could do. Vanessa got trained as a cannabis consultant and began exploring how cannabis can help kids with autism, behavior issues, fears, PANDAS, treatment resistant epilepsy, ADHD, anxieties and depression. Her research has uncovered astounding findings that she now uses to help parents make informed decisions about incorporating cannabis into a child's treatment regimen. Vanessa launched her business Elevated Healing to help parents to explore alternative options and to really understand what is available to help their children. Vanessa Velez is the founder of Clarity is Crucial, where she helps brilliant women elevate into the person their purpose needs them to be. She's a 4th generation healer and intuitive, with a Fortune 500 background and indigenous roots. Before taking the entrepreneurial leap, she led a corporate career in a male-dominated industry as a leader, trainer and professional problem solver – a path that would be forever altered the day she resigned and dove all in to her purpose. Since then, she's worked with women from San Diego to Sweden – in person and online, hosted group workshops and events, taught live online and on stage, created her own products, programs and the Clarity is Crucial podcast – all with one clear aim… To help brilliant women lead and be the person their purpose needs. Here's what we covered on the episode: How Vanessa has been on the podcast before and how we are both in a mentorship program with Erika Lyremark The reason why Vanessa is here to have a conversation about how to show up as a conscious leader when it comes to design  How people are craving more authentic leaders in 2020 which means making sure things are ethical, inclusive and making sure you're standing up for social justice in your business  Being a conscious leader to Vanessa is someone who does the inner work, has mastered their mindset and is able to manage their emotions, so they don't lead from that, but lead from a more conscious place Vanessa shares that it takes courage to talk about these topics that others don't want to discuss   How you need to lead yourself internally and then be true to who you are and bring that out into the world   One tip Vanessa shares to make that transition in your business is to take small steps each day  Vanessa explains why you need to get clear on what you value and what causes you think are important  Why Vanessa believes you should trust what lights you up because leaders are needed in all spaces  Vanessa talks about how leadership is a skillset that we were not taught so we must be intentional about doing the work ourselves so we can model that in all spaces Vanessa shares that you should always lead with what's true and make sure you are true to who you are when applying conscious leadership within your marketing materials  The reason why some people are hesitant on how to move forward is because they haven't acknowledged that they are in a transitions themselves  When you're transitioning, Vanessa shares that you have to reflect and re-evaluate what you stand for and what's important to you now because it might have changed  Vanessa explains that you should take what's important to you and brainstorm ways that feel good to you in embodying that, whether that's writing content about it or sharing someone else's content about it  One important thing you should think about is how you would want the message or information delivered to you and deliver it that way to your audience  Vanessa shares that one way to make sure you're taking baby steps everyday is to ask yourself daily if you did something that helped you align with what you value today  Why we need to learn to have difficult conversations, especially now that the whole world is having them  One step Vanessa took was sharing an important PSA on her podcast that was strong and had been on her heart  How that vulnerable podcast Vanessa shared is the most played episode of the season and it inspired other people to start showing up and speaking out about these issues  Vanessa believes that there is someone out there waiting for you to take that step and believes we all have a responsibility to be on the conscious side of all this  Vanessa explains that fear will not go away because fear is what causes people to take action sometimes, the important thing is that we don't get stuck there and allow fear to dictate our actions  You have to get to a state of courage so you build that confidence to take baby steps into bigger steps  Vanessa teaches the mindset of having goals that help you grow is very important  Vanessa shares a story from her childhood that explains why having goals that help you grow is important and is something she had to learn along the way  How if you don't allow yourself to make mistakes and grow, you're actually limiting yourself Vanessa explains that anticipating how you will handle mistakes takes away the anxiety because now you have a plan for them  Why you should differentiate between criticism that is valid and criticism that is not so you can see if there's something that is can help you move forward, better, smarter and stronger  Connect with Vanessa through her website, Instagram or her podcast  Links mentioned Clarity is Crucial Website    Connect with Vanessa on Instagram    Clarity is Crucial Podcast   Important PSA Podcast Like what you heard?  Click here to subscribe + leave a review on iTunes. https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/captivate When I was attending University of Idaho, my roommate was one of the top vacuum cleaner salesman in the world. Believe it or not I've actually had him on the podcast in a separate episode which you can I remember being fascinated with this guy's personal library. It was chock-full of books about reading body language, how to tell if people were lying to you, how to tell if people were attracted to you, how to negotiate, how to argue, and how to successfully enchant people and engage in social situations. So I read just about every book in his library and became incredibly interested in the science of human body language and human emotions. However, for the past several years I really haven't delved into much of the science behind understanding human connections and human interactions until my interest was recently re-sparked when reading a fascinating new book called  As I usually do when I find a book incredibly intriguing, I folded over an enormous number of pages and hunted down the author to interview her for today's podcast. If you ever feel awkward at networking events, wonder what your date really thinks of you, wish you could decode people, or want to learn more about the science of people, this episode is for you. As a human behavior hacker, my guest on today's podcast - Vanessa Van Edwards - created a research lab to study the hidden forces that drive us. And she’s definitely cracked the code. In her new book , she shares shortcuts, systems, and secrets for taking charge of your interactions at work, at home, and in any social situation. These aren’t the people skills you learned in school. This is the first comprehensive, science backed, real life manual on how to captivate anyone - and a completely new approach to building connections.   Just like knowing the formulas to use in a chemistry lab, or the right programming language to build an app, Captivate provides simple ways to solve people problems. You learn, for example… -How to work a room: Every party, networking event, and social situation has a predictable map. Discover the sweet spot for making the most connections. -How to read faces: It’s easier than you think to speed-read facial expressions and use them to predict people’s emotions. -How to talk to anyone: Every conversation can be memorable—once you learn how certain words generate the pleasure hormone dopamine in listeners. When you understand the laws of human behavior, your influence, impact, and income will increase significantly. What’s more, you will improve your interpersonal intelligence, make a killer first impression, and build rapport quickly and authentically in any situation - negotiations, interviews, parties, and pitches. You’ll never interact the same way again. Vanessa Van Edwards is the lead investigator at , a human behavior research lab. She is a Huffington Post columnist and published author. Her innovative work has been featured on NPR, Business Week and USA Today. She regularly gives keynotes and appears in the media to talk about her research. She has written for CNN, Fast Company and Forbes. Her latest book, Captivate, was chosen as one of Apple’s Most Anticipated Books of 2017. During my discussion with Vanessa, you'll discover: -How we can "smell" fear in people, why women on birth control pills may choose the wrong mate, and how our level of hormones can actually change our facial structure and compatibility with other people...[9:35] -What a "PQ score" is and why it is so relevant to success...[14:27] -The biggest mistake most people make at social events, and where successful "hyper-networkers" stand...[17:50] -What you can learn from the most successful TED Talks based on the same three things that every TED presenter does...[23:20] -The "trust hormone" that Ben injected for several weeks that can also be released via eye contacts and handshakes...[26:35] -Why Vanessa took a 7 day vow of silence, and the shocking lessons she learned by "not talking"...[37:15] -One of the best hacks you can use to sync your brain to someone else you are talking to...[43:50] -What is the process Vanessa describes in her book called "the nut job"? [49:30] -And much more!
