137. Benefits of Running a Podcast

Monetization Nation Podcast

Podcasts are becoming increasingly popular. 37% of the US population (104 million) listen to podcasts at least every month (Source: PodcastHosting.org). That's millions of people we can reach every month. In today's episode, Jeff Mendelson and I will discuss the benefits of running a podcast, along with tips for working with virtual assistants and communicating value in pricing.   Jeff Mendelson is the host of the One Big Tip podcast. He runs a full-service digital marketing agency where he works with developing comprehensive digital marketing campaigns for startups to establish businesses. He focuses on lead generation and ROI-based initiatives.    Jeff is based in Miami, Florida but works worldwide. He helps entrepreneurs conceptualize, develop, and then execute all-encompassing digital marketing strategies, sales funnels, paid campaigns, and getting the right people and disciplines in place. With over 15 years of continuous digital marketing experience in all formats, Jeff has a wealth of information on what works and what doesn't in the digital marketing space.   How Jeff's Podcast Changed His Life   Jeff started his podcast in December 2019, taking the advice of Steve Larson to publish every day for a year and then see the change. “That's what I've been doing, and it's just been taking me in all kinds of great directions, [and I've had] all kinds of new revelations. I guess the biggest thing is that I'm just mad I didn't do this like five or 10 years ago, but I was just like, ‘Why do I need a podcast?' . . . Now I'm all about it, and I'm ready to kill it and really help other people to do it as well.”   Benefits of a Podcast   Jeff explained that having a podcast is a great way to network. “There is no better networking tool, COVID-19 or not COVID-19,” Jeff said. With the many communication tools we have—Zoom, Microsoft teams, WhatsApp—the world is so small, and having a podcast is one way to find and connect with people all over the world using those communication tools.   Jeff said he was interviewed by a British guy located in Doha, Qatar, and they had a great interview. “I never would have met these people without [my podcast],” Jeff said.   A podcast can be a great way for people to thrive in a situation they can control. “I'm an introvert already,” Jeff explained. “I'm a wallflower at conventions. . . . but once I get in front of [the camera] . . . [I] can talk about this all day.”   Jeff also said podcasting is a great way to establish and control the conversation. It becomes a no-pressure invitation to speak with really interesting people we might not have spoken with otherwise. If we see someone at a shopping mall and try to talk to them, they might just ignore us, but most of the time people are a lot more willing to have a conversation with us if it is in a setting like a podcast.   When we invite someone to our show, we provide them with value. They get positive exposure to our audience with good reciprocity.   We can also have fun conversations. Jeff used the example of his video background, which has a lightsaber and some Star Wars figures on a shelf. He doesn't mention it, but people often bring it up and they get to talk about Star Wars for a few minutes. “It's just a great connection tool,” Jeff said. We need to find ways to build connections with our guests and listeners. Personally, I wear shirts for some of my favorite movies and shows, some of my favorite sports teams, and some companies I have worked for in the past to help build connections.    Podcasts can also help you make higher connections. “Being a guest and also hosting people, you have a direct connection to the top. You interview the CEO of the company. You bypass all the gatekeepers, you bypass all the VPs, or directors, or whoever it is. You talk to the source of the information, and now you're connected with that person who knows you on a first-name basis. And that for me is mind-blowing.”   Tips for Effectively Working with a Virtual Assistant   A virtual assistant (VA) is an independent contractor who provides administrative services to clients while operating outside of the client's office. They typically operate from a home office but can access necessary files and documents remotely (Source: Investopedia).   I've been working with a team in India for more than 20 years and I love it. It's nice to be able to leave for the day and they work on it during the night. We usually overlap for an hour or two in the morning, and it's very effective. I love the work ethic, and I find that I can keep people on the team longer. These are just some of the benefits of having those remote teams.   Jeff has also worked with VAs for most of his career. “It's a little bit of a mindset shift,” Jeff said. “[But] it's really quite simple. I don't care whether you're across the street or halfway around the world, you are remote to me.” He views everyone as remote because, at the end of the day, they are all a four-inch square on a screen, and that's all he has to connect with them.   “When you lose that ability to have coffee with somebody . . . you need to be super clear. Overcommunicate. You just need to make sure that whatever it is going on in your head, whatever your wants and desires [are], . . . you have to be able to communicate it, and that does not matter whether you're working with someone in Argentina, in Ukraine, in India, the Philippines—doesn't matter. You have to be able to communicate.”   Once we figure out how to communicate with our VAs, the next step is to train them and give them work that is interesting to them and they can succeed in.    Jeff said the last thing we need to keep in mind with VAs is the time zone difference and how it affects our work. “These people are not going to be working the same 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern Time that you are. Someone in India, they're 10 hours ahead of me. So I have to make sure that I get in all of my requests before I shut down for the evening, and my requests . . . need to be clear enough that they can work independently because they are going to be doing this when it's two [or] three in the morning my time.”   To help us with our communication, we can use tools like Loom or ScreenFlow. We also need to make sure that we have standard operating procedures and that we train our VAs on them well.   Communicating Value in Pricing   Jeff said the biggest mistake he has made several times throughout his career is with pricing. “When you price something out,” Jeff said, “what you're trying to do is deliver a product that delivers more value to the person you're selling to [than] the amount of money they're going to pay you.”   In other words, what we're giving them is worth more than what they're paying. For example, if we build them one sale funnel that's guaranteed to make them a million dollars, we can't accept $500 for it. That funnel is going to categorically change their life. If we underprice it to that point, they will think that it has no value or it won't work.   “I've made that mistake maybe five or six times where I realized that I undervalued something, and, of course, part of that comes with experience,” Jeff said. “On the flip side of that, when you overcharge someone [it] can have the exact same effect.” If we overcharge someone, they'll just say, “You're too expensive,” and find someone else. In these cases, it really teaches us to hone in on what we are worth and how much we can charge for a particular product. It also teaches us how to sell the value of our products and services well.   Part of pricing does come with experience, but we can also do our research. We can look at what our competitors are charging and see, based on our experience and value, what we should charge in relation to that. One of the most important things, though, is communicating our value. We need to make sure our customers know how much our products or services are worth.   Key Takeaways   Thank you so much Jeff for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode:   We can reach millions of people with podcasts. Podcast guests are a great way to network. Podcasts are also a great way to have conversations with people that we may not have been able to otherwise. We can interview and get to know CEOs instead of VPs or directors. When working with VAs, we need to overcommunicate, especially when there's a big-time, difference. We can use tools to help us communicate effectively, as well as having standard operating procedures in place. Underpricing can make our product or service seem like it has no value. Overpricing can scare away potential customers. We should try to find a happy medium. With our pricing, we need to make sure we are accurately communicating our value.   Connect with Jeff   If you enjoyed this interview and want to learn more about Jeff or connect with him, you can find him on LinkedIn or visit his website jeffmendelson.com or his podcast's website onebigtip.com.   Want to be a Better Digital Monetizer?   Did you like today's episode? The Future of Work With Jacob Morgan
Former CEO of GE Jeff Immelt on Lessons Learned, Working With Jack Welch, & Dealing With Critics

The Future of Work With Jacob Morgan

Play Episode Listen Later May 24, 2021 65:33

Jeff Immelt is the former CEO of General Electric and author of the new book: Hot Seat: What I Learned From Leading A Great American Company. Jeff has had a lot of critics over the years and stepping into a role after the legendary Jack Welch was not an easy task. In his 16 years leading GE as the CEO he had to lead the company through 9/11, the financial crisis, and the 2011 meltdown of the Fukushima’s nuclear reactors--which were designed by GE. He definitely knows what it’s like to lead under pressure. Why Jeff wrote his book (he almost didn’t) Jeff admits that his career didn’t end the way he wanted it to. As he shares, “I was just unhappy, I felt like the whole narrative around GE had been lost. And that, you know, truth equals really facts plus context. And I felt like the context had been lost. So one of the reasons why I wrote it is, I wanted to tell a more complete story. I didn't want it to be defensive, I wanted it to be complete.” Jeff, who is also a Lecturer in Management at Stanford University Graduate School of Business, says that his students don’t want to learn from a perfect leader who has everything figured out. These students have lived through financial crisis, Covid, and turbulent times---they want to know how to survive through volatility and what to do when things don’t work out. Because of this he felt like there was also an audience for his book that wouldn’t necessarily care about GE. Those are the two main reasons he wrote his book. If there is one message that Jeff would like his critics to take from the book it would be that there were people in the company that tried their best and did perform well. “If you look at cumulative earnings, market share, you know, if you go back to 2016, this was a top 20 market cap company. It was number seven on Fortune most admired, it was number one on companies to hire leaders. We were leaders in digitization and globalization, you know, but the stock didn't work. succession planning didn't work, there were things that didn't work.” He says it would be one thing if the criticism was just about him, but there are thousands of people that have been hurt through this process, and this book sets out to correct that. What was it like working with Jack Welch Jack Welch, who passed away in 2020, is still considered one of the most famous CEOs of the century. Jeff was actually the CEO that took over after Jack left. So what was it like working for Jack? Jeff says Jack was challenging, giving, and creative. He was someone who liked to portray himself as “tough as nails” but Jeff says that’s not the person he saw. He was one of the best leaders to run something at scale and he was a great communicator. Jeff says this about taking over for Jack, “But by the end of the 90s, it was a company where perception didn't equal reality. We were 50% financial 50%, kind of an old industrial company. We traded like Amazon at a 50 P/E. And so kind of following him, you know, the trick was to drive the appropriate kind of change, while never looking backwards and never casting blame. And that's challenging. Look, it's easier to follow a jerk than it is to follow, you know, the best leader of the previous century. Right. But I never wanted to be him. I never wanted to act like him. And I felt like the company needed change.” While there were elements of his leadership style that were timeless, like his focus on people and metrics, there were also some elements that wouldn’t work well in an organization today. Jeff says that Jack didn’t really respect technology and he had an element of short-termism, that with the pace of change, would be a problem. Jack also believed you shouldn’t do anything as a leader unless you can control it, but as Jeff shares there are a lot of things that as a CEO of a public company you just can’t control. “I think, you know, the trick with every generation of leadership is to pick the things that travel that work, and pick the new things that have to be part of, you know, making a company vibrant and competitive in the next generation. And so I think that's the way I would assess how much would work and how much wouldn't work in this generation.” What was it like leading a company during 9/11 Jeff was on a business trip to Seattle when the attack happened and he saw it on the TV in the gym at the hotel he was staying at. He ended up getting stuck in Seattle until planes started flying again a week later. But immediately after it happened he started crisis call sessions with his team. One thing he says he learned from that experience was that leaders should be shock absorbers of fear, not accelerants of fear. “You learn to hold two truths at the same time--that things can always get worse, but that things can also have a future and you need to focus on that. You have to communicate like, hourly, daily, and we did a lot of that.” And in times of crisis leaders have to be able to take action, some decisions will work well and some won’t, but there are things that have to be confronted right away. During 9/11, the financial crisis, and Covid leaders had to find a way to lead without a playbook. How do you do that? Jeff says it starts with surrounding yourself with people you can trust and talk to. After that it is important to have a sense of timing and an idea of what tasks need to be prioritized and what things can be left for later. And the last thing that leaders in tough times have to be able to do is deal with criticism. “When you don't have a playbook you have to be willing, when people say wrong things about you, you have to be very contemporary with it with the respect of owning the narrative and controlling the communication, and things like that. Because they can set you back so good leader's flexible point of view. Learn every minute of every day, and be willing to push back when people get it wrong.” How Jeff deals with imposter syndrome Over his career Jeff says there have been many times when he has doubted himself or questioned his decisions. When it comes to imposter syndrome Jeff says it is important for leaders to have reservoirs of self confidence, self reflection, and self renewal. You have to be able to look at yourself in the mirror and believe you can do it. You have to keep showing up and always do your best. It is also important to have friends around you who will encourage you, cheer you up, coach you, and pick you up when you’re down. And you can only build these friendships in normal times, you can’t wait until times of crisis to build these friendships--at that point it’s too late. A strategy Jeff has used to be a more effective leader One of the things that has set him apart from other leaders over the years is what Jeff calls his external focus. He traveled a lot for business, and wherever he was he would take time to connect with the people there in their own setting to see what they were working on and things they were thinking about. He made it a point to connect with customers, other leaders, scientists, experts and that really allowed him to stay ahead of the game. Because of this skill GE was an early player in globalization, digitalization, environmental investing and much more. Jeff’s advice for current and future leaders If there is one thing that Jeff has learned over his career that he would like to pass on to others, it’s this--study how people work. You should be able to envision how everyone in your organization does their job. You don’t have to necessarily be able to do the job yourself, but you should know what kind of tools they use, how the teams work together, what metrics move them, etc… “Frequently I go to a CEOs office, and I'm always looking at their wall to see what connects them to the frontline worker. And if I walk in an office, and it's just artwork, and statues and crap like that, then I don't believe what the value statement says. I'm looking for, like, a picture where they were walking the floor with a nurse, or a picture of a jet engine or something like that.” Advice that Jeff received early on in his career was to make sure, no matter how big of a company he worked for, that he connected with the people there and knew how they got their work done.

Welcome to the continuing adventures of the At The Flicks team as they talk Star Trek movies. After the modest success of Star Trek III : The Search For Spock (At The Flicks episode 152), there was to be one more medium budget movie to complete a trilogy. This was a Star Trek film which went in a very different direction than the movies that proceeded it. It went backwards. In time that is. Yes, the crew of the Enterprise return to the San Francisco of the mid 1980’s. Guiding us through this production is our captain – Darren (after all it was his idea), backed up by his science officer Graham who will be looking at some of the more technical aspects. The good news is Jeff got the transporter working and Neil has been returned to us. He doesn’t look quite the same, due to a Fly like malfunction with the transporter equipment, so we can class him as a Star Trek alien for this episode. It was our fault for letting someone as technically inept as Jeff loose with computers! With the full crew, sort of restored, we have an in depth discussion on one of the most fun Star Trek movies. We will be talking about such things as: - How Eddie Murphy was almost cast in a key role - Why a very funny improvised line of dialogue was said to pay a parking ticket - Why there is no humour in the future - How Jeff gets confused between Whales and Wales And many other fascinating production facts you didn’t realise you needed to know. As always in these shows, the At The Flicks team can be divided into two camps. Darren and Graham are devoted Star Trek fans while Neil and Jeff are casual viewers who assumes live long and prosper is a Jeff Bezos mantra. So, prepare to boldly go, enjoy and remember in these difficult days, stay safe and listen to At The Flicks.

In this episode of the Millionaire Mindcast, we have an incredible guest Jeff Lerner who shares his inspiring entrepreneurial journey, insights, and knowledge on how to achieve a digital real estate asset, digital economy, and how to build an online empire from no money! Jeff is an entrepreneur, speaker, investor, influencer, creative trainer to over 150,000 awesome life seekers, and CEO / Founder at ENTRE Institute, where he sold courses and training to help over 50,000 students that are developing their entrepreneurial skills. Also, he is digital hosting the popular "Millionaire Secrets" podcast and YouTube show, and working on his first full-length book "Millionaire Secrets: Things Rich People Know But Don't Tell You." Despite growing up being bullied and being called retarded, Jeff is still grown up as an amazing and strong person. Pain made him learn how to be emotionally bulletproof. In 2018, Jeff was really broke, out of work, depressed, evicted from his apartment, and almost got divorced from his wife. This was the time when he failed his 10th consecutive business, and was full of debts. But instead of getting a job, he found ways to start his online business. Jeff became an affiliate marketer where he discovered the whole new world of the digital and modern economy. Fortunately, he paid off half-million dollars of debts in just 18 months. Later on, he decided to engage in the disruption of mainstream education because Jeff believes that 100 million people are underserved by traditional education. Many graduated from colleges because it is a traditional way to achieve security, and to earn money. There were a lot of things that must be learned in order to succeed but never teach in school. His ambition is to create a standardized, formalized, high-quality, entrepreneurial curriculum that teaches like a university type of standard. Currently, Jeff is earning millions of dollars from his training and course masterpieces, and delighted in pursuing his passion for helping a lot of people to develop an entrepreneurial skill! Some Questions I Ask: What would you say your entrepreneurial journey has consisted of time frame wise? (00:18) What’s your most important or proud moment and maybe the lowest moment of your entrepreneurial journey, which two experiences have come to like you? (00:32) What would you say Jeff Lerner is up to right now here in 2021? (03:44) What are the categories of your courses? (35:43) When you think of your favorite digital real estate asset, what comes to mind? He's pretty much your friendly, typical Princeton educated lawyer turned award-winning comedian, best-selling author, and champion for behavioral economics . WHAT YOU'LL LEARN What money is, why we won't make good money decisions, the common cognitive biases we have related to money, how to not let the retailers dupe you during this holiday shopping season, and more! QUOTES [11:31] "Traditional economics says everything's cost benefit analysis. Reality is that that's not how it works. We are busy people. We have a lot of stress and we don't always make the rational choice." [16:47] "The there's no clear right or wrong choice with money that we all always know. There's always some uncertainty. And when uncertainty is in any decision, that gap gets filled by the emotional needs that we have. The need to feel like we're making the right choice. The need to feel like we've done the right thing. The need to feel good. And that's when we can be prone to make irrational decisions, because we go by our feelings and emotions. " [18:08] "I feel like marrying the data science with the people science is going to be like an incredible combination. To not just know where they're going and what buttons to push, but why why are people doing this?" [20:30] "When we pay for something, it stimulates the same region of our brain as physical pain. And that pain should serve a purpose. It should make us stop and think about what we're doing." [34:01] "You can't pay your rent with the money you save shopping."
