When magazines first emerged, they were the preserve of an elite who could afford to pay for them. But as time went on, the cost of paper fell, printing technology became more streamlined, literacy improved and would-be publishers spotted an opportunity to connect with audiences hungry for information and entertainment.Magazines found a place to appeal to all types of interest, in the same way that the internet does today. In their heyday they attracted some of the best writers such as Charles Dickens and Ernest Hemingway, sometimes acting as a vehicle to establish literary careers. Later magazines were to become the go-to place for quality photography and design.Falling advertising revenues have largely contributed to the decline of printed magazines, as well as editions moving online. However some titles have found a way of reinventing themselves in the 21st century.Iszi Lawrence is joined by a panel of guests to discuss the rise and evolution of magazines. How long does light last?

When listener Rob from Devon, UK, heard of a newly detected planet light years away, he was struck by the sheer scale the light must travel to reach us here on Earth. It got him wondering: How long does light last? What's the oldest light we've ever observed? And does light ever die? To find out, presenter Anand Jagatia calls on some of the brightest minds in astronomy and physics. Astronomer Matthew Middleton from the University of Southampton describes himself as “a kid in a sweet shop” when it comes to physics, and that enthusiasm comes in handy, because scientists still struggle to define exactly what light is. What we do know is that light comes in many forms, and choosing the right kind can peel back the cosmic curtain, revealing the universe's deepest and darkest secrets. That knowledge will prove vital in Anand's search for the oldest light ever observed. At the European Southern Observatory in Chile, staff astronomer Pascale Hibon gives Anand a behind-the-scenes look at the Very Large Telescope, one of the most advanced optical instruments on Earth, perfectly placed under some of the clearest skies on the planet. Light from the objects Pascale studies has often travelled for billions of years, making her images snapshots of the distant past. In a sense, she's pretty much a time traveller. If light has crossed the vastness of the universe to reach us, it must be unimaginably ancient. But what will become of it in the far future? Could we trap it and preserve it forever? “If we knew what light is, that might be an easier question to answer,” says Miles Padgett at the University of Glasgow, who has spent his career trying to pin it down. As Anand discovers, physics can be more philosophical than you might expect. From redshifted galaxies at the edge of the observable universe to exotic materials that can slow light to walking pace, CrowdScience explores whether we can catch light, how it changes over time, and why truly understanding it remains one of physics' most stubborn challenges. Since the early 2000s, one type of shop has quietly become a regular feature on British high streets: the Polski sklep – or Polish shop.Known for their smoked sausages, sour pickles, and wide selection of herbal teas, these shops offer more than just food. With Polish people now the largest non-British nationality in the UK, and Polish the next most spoken language after English and Welsh, they also reflect a broader story of migration and community. Jaega Wise explores what makes these stores worth visiting for everyone, not just Poles, and how they're adapting to the challenges facing the high street. To find out more, Jaega visits Peterborough – a city she once lived in and remembers for its vibrant Polish community. There, she explores the busy Europol supermarket and a popular home-style restaurant, Pierogarnia. In Walthamstow, she meets cultural historian and second-generation Pole Dr Kasia Tomasiewicz, who explains the background behind the herbal teas and how they connect her to her ancestors. And back in Hackney, Jaega makes pierogi at home with food writer Zuza Zak, using a mix of Polish and British ingredients. She also hears from Dr Kathy Burrell, Professor of Migration Geographies at the University of Liverpool. Producer: Eliza Lomas

It's a high-energy Friday on Right on Radio as the host welcomes listeners to the “grand illusion” and sets the table for a sweeping tour through faith, media, and geopolitics. The episode opens with the interactive Word on Word segment, comparing Luke 1:49 with Romans 14:8—listeners overwhelmingly choose Romans 14:8—and a teased clue about the next New Testament book for the returning Sunday Bible study. A dance-inducing outro track is promised to cap the show, complete with another hint for eager Bible-readers. Challenging mainstream and alternative media alike, the host argues that coordinated talking points, sentiment-tracking, and AI-driven feedback loops are used to steer public opinion and prevent unity. The conversation frames current narratives as flexible storylines that are constantly adjusted based on measured dissent, with control—rather than outcomes—presented as the primary objective of the so-called elites. From there, the lens widens to Canada, where the host describes economic decline, internal trade barriers, resource constraints, and growing separatist talk in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Quebec. The discussion then shifts to the UK and Commonwealth, highlighting October timelines for central bank digital currencies, rising public resistance, and the broader struggle between central banking power and the BRICS push toward gold-backed systems. Gold signals, shifting Arctic trade routes (with Canada and Russia as key stakeholders), and an alternative to the Suez chokepoint (the proposed Ben Gurion Canal) are presented as pieces of a fast-changing global chessboard. Turning to Ukraine, the episode outlines the host's view of Russia's red lines—retaining eastern regions, rolling back NATO encroachment, and “de‑nazification”—and the claim that public messaging obscures the real stakes. The much-discussed Trump–Putin meeting is portrayed as pre-scripted, with the true agenda said to involve trade corridors, currency realignment, and dismantling the old power triad of the City of London, the Vatican, and Washington, D.C. A reported threat of a false-flag attack in Kyiv is also mentioned as part of the day's tense backdrop. The episode detours into the UFO debate as it ricochets through Congress and media: “greys,” “Nordics,” “insectoids,” and “reptilians” are reinterpreted through a spiritual lens, with the host framing them as angelic or demonic manifestations rather than extraterrestrials. This leads into a prophetic thread on the rise of “ten kings,” a brief transfer of power, and the emergence of the Antichrist—tying scriptural expectations to contemporary events and symbols, including the meeting location dubbed “Q1” on 17th Street. Throughout, the host emphasizes keeping faith centered: do not look to politicians for salvation, trust God's sovereignty, and weigh unfolding events against Scripture. Community notes include a Saturday night prayer call on Telegram and a lighthearted household saga featuring a soot-covered dog, a stubborn squirrel, and a reluctant fireplace. The show closes with a Joe Bonamassa track—“Love Ain't a Love Song”—and a final nudge for listeners to guess the next Bible study book. No guest joins this episode; instead, it's a spirited solo deep-dive with real-time audience participation, weaving together media critique, geopolitics, spiritual warfare, and practical faith. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Editor David Horovitz joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Hamas negotiators arrived in Egypt this week for talks aimed at getting moribund ceasefire and hostage release negotiations back on track, with Israel having reportedly sent a team to Doha. Horovitz updates us on the status of negotiations. IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir yesterday approved the general outline for the military’s upcoming major offensive to conquer Gaza City. This comes after a highly charged conflict with Defense Minister Israel Katz earlier this week. Horovitz takes us through this unusual public spat and what we know so far about the plan to take Gaza City. Yesterday, Spain signaled support for French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal of an international coalition under a United Nations mandate to stabilize Gaza -- including deploying the controversial UNRWA agency -- calling it “one of the tools” that could bring peace to the region. Horovitz briefly comments. Even as much of the western world is pushing for a two-state solution, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed in a rare Hebrew-language interview that he felt a connection to the vision of “Greater Israel.” We learn more about the bizarre interaction during an i24 interview, which has spurred international condemnation. Horovitz sat down with US Ambassador Mike Huckabee this week for an in-depth interview. Horovitz brings highlights, including Huckabee's stalwart support and the Baptist minister's impressions of how Gazans see the US and the IDF. The CEO of the Toronto International Film Festival said overnight that he is working to get "The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue," a documentary about the October 7 massacre, back on the big screen, apologizing after the movie was pulled from the festival schedule, which sparked a large outcry. Horovitz describes the surreal request by the festival's organizers to obtain permission for use of the Hamas October 7 footage. Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing liveblog for more updates. For further reading: IDF chief greenlights general outline of planned conquest of Gaza City Israel may dispatch negotiators to Doha for talks on freeing all hostages, ending war Arab nations fume after Netanyahu says he feels connection to vision of Greater Israel Huckabee: With Palestine state move, UK and France have joined forces with Israel’s enemies After outcry, Toronto film fest says it wants to reinstate pulled October 7 documentary Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts. Since then, the volume of digital asset payments has grown more than fivefold to nearly $300 million in the first half of 2025.
