Britain's Conservative Party is one of the oldest and most successful political parties in history. Local elections in the UK have signalled that they are facing the prospect of being wiped out, imperilled by the rise of the right-wing Reform Party, headed by one of the most pervasive and divisive figures in British politics: Nigel Farage. Reform's success is also coming at the expense of Labour, whose voters are underwhelmed and unconvinced by the performance so far of Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government. Hosts Nina Dos Santos and Owen Bennett Jones explore what makes Reform such a potent political threat that they could upend 100 years of Labour and Conservative rule, charting the party's rise from UKIP to Brexit to now. They speak to Gawain Towler, former Reform spokesperson and close political confidant of Nigel Farage, and Ben Habib, formerly deputy leader of Reform two men who understand the soul of the movement and the man who leads and embodies the party: Nigel Farage. Tom welcomes back Lyn Alden, Founder of Lyn Alden Investment Strategy, to the show to discuss the intricacies of trade deficits, the role of the US dollar as a global reserve currency, and the broader economic implications for the United States. Lyn explains that a trade deficit occurs when a country imports more than it exports, and while some countries experience this cyclically, others, like India, have managed structural deficits by investing in long-term growth rather than overconsumption. The US, however, faces a unique challenge: its trade deficit is deeply tied to its status as the world's reserve currency, which creates an excess demand for dollars and makes it difficult to manufacture competitively. Lyn highlights that the dollar's strength perpetuates this cycle, making imports expensive and exports cheaper, while also forcing the US to rely on foreign investment to fund its deficits. This dynamic has contributed to deindustrialization and a shift in economic power globally. She contrasts this with historical examples like the UK during the Bretton Woods era, where a similar situation led to stagnation before the rise of new powers like the US. The discussion shifts to fiscal dominance, where large government deficits constrain monetary policy, making central banks more reliant on fiscal authorities. Lyn notes that the Fed is increasingly limited in its ability to control inflation due to these fiscal pressures. She also addresses Trump's tariff policies, arguing they harm domestic industries and shift costs onto American consumers while failing to address the root causes of trade imbalances. Inflationary pressures from tariffs are uneven, with specific sectors facing price increases while others experience disinflation. Lyn emphasizes that sustained inflation requires broader money supply growth, which has not been a significant factor in recent years. She concludes by exploring alternatives like gold and Bitcoin as potential reserve assets, suggesting that diversification into neutral reserves could help mitigate risks but remains largely theoretical at this stage. In a high-energy episode, @intheMatrixxx and @shadygrooove tackle the latest assault on Trump's America-First legacy, exposing former FBI Director James Comey's now-deleted Instagram post of seashells forming “8647”—interpreted by many as a call to “get rid” of Trump, the 47th president, during his Middle East tour. With the Secret Service and DHS investigating, and Trump himself calling it a clear “assassination” threat, the show highlights MAGA's demand for accountability, contrasting Comey's actions with Trump's global triumphs—securing $3 trillion in investments across Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE. They then explore what “United States” truly means, tracing its roots to the founders' vision of a sovereign union and showing how Trump's leadership—through tariff truces, ceasefires, and Middle East deals—restores America as a respected global power, no longer a laughingstock but a nation united for strength and prosperity. It's been another turbulent week for Labour after Keir Starmer announced a crackdown on legal migration. The prime minister gave what has since become a controversial speech suggesting the UK is at risk of becoming an “island of strangers” – and home secretary Yvette Cooper announced an end to all social care visas, tighter rules for highly skilled visas, more rigorous English language tests, and more. Host Lucy Fisher is joined by the FT's Robert Shrimsley and Jim Pickard to dissect the policies, as well as the reaction to Starmer's speech and where Labour's position leaves the Tories on immigration. Send us a textSteve Smith of the Vapors stops by to discuss their latest release, Wasp in the Jar, their upcoming tour, and their longevity career. *****Best known for their massive 1980 worldwide hit “Turning Japanese,” The Vapors continue to bring their individually styled brand of music to fans old and new in the form of high-quality live performances and the ongoing development of critically acclaimed new material. The band, formed in 1979, had already gained a substantial live following around their hometown of Guildford, Surrey and in London, when they were brought to large UK audiences with their support slot on The Jam's iconic 1979 “Setting Sons” tour, by then managed by The Jam's Bruce Foxton and Paul Weller's father John. The release of debut single “Prisoners” in 1979 was followed by 1980's “Turning Japanese “alongside the classic first album New Clear Days. The single reached Number 3 in the UK, Number 1 in Australia, and hit the top 10 in both New Zealand and Canada whilst becoming a mainstream Billboard Top 40 hit in the US. The debut album spawned further hits “News At Ten” and” Waiting for the Weekend” before the very different, but equally well received second album “Magnets” arriving in 1981, providing the singles “Spiders” and further hit “Jimmie Jones”, with the band touring extensively in the UK, US and Australia throughout this period. The band parted company late in 1981, with all members going on to have varied and successful careers across the entertainment industry. In 2016, after a decade of Internet clamour for a revival, they announced their reformation for a short series of gigs, including a sell-out show at London's Dingwalls. Over 170 gigs and 2020's comeback album third album Together and several singles later, they're stronger and more relevant than ever. The band continue to write and perform and have completed two headline tours in the UK since the pandemic, as well as appearing at the Pasadena Rose Bowl's “Cruel World” festival in May 2023, touring the US in 2024 and recording their exciting statement fourth album Wasp In A Jar (to be released on 28th February 2025). They continue to deliver polished shows featuring songs spanning their entire 45-year history. In 2022, Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian actress to win the Academy Award for Best Actress. But she wasn't the first actress of Asian origin to be nominated. In 1935, Merle Oberon was nominated for Best Actress for the role of Kitty Vane in The Dark Angel, only her second film in the U.S. film industry. But no one knew Oberon was Asian. Her public biography said she was born to white parents in Tasmania, eventually moving to India and, from there, to the UK. But Merle Oberon, in truth, was of Anglo-Indian origin, born in Bombay. She'd hidden her heritage to get around U.S. censorship and immigration laws—a secret she took to her grave, even if many in the industry suspected the truth. Mayukh Sen tackles Oberon's life in Love, Queenie: Merle Oberon, Hollywood's First South Asian Star (W.W. Norton: 2025). The property market in Ghana presents a golden opportunity for both local and diaspora investors, with prime locations seeing values double within 5-6 years compared to 10 years in markets like the UK. This eye-opening conversation with Leslie Brobey, CEO of Ocean B Properties and a 13-year veteran in Ghana's real estate industry, reveals insider knowledge crucial for anyone looking to invest in Ghanaian property.Leslie shares why East Legon Hills stands as his top investment recommendation, having seen land prices skyrocket from $6,000 to $60,000+ in just a decade. He breaks down the rental economics - how a $190,000 apartment in Cantonments can generate $4,000 monthly with good occupancy, potentially recouping your investment in half the time of other markets. For diaspora investors especially, he explains why apartments offer advantages over large houses: better security, lower maintenance, amenities like backup power, and strong rental potential when owners are abroad. The conversation tackles critical aspects often overlooked by buyers: which documents are non-negotiable when purchasing land (land title, site plan, and full search reports), how to verify legitimate ownership, understanding the implications of Ghana's leasing system (50 years for foreigners versus 99 years for locals), and why ensuring your lease explicitly states it's renewable could save your investment. Leslie shares cautionary tales of common scams, from multiple sales of the same property to divorced couples selling jointly-owned land without proper authorization.Whether you're considering a $50,000 investment or planning to relocate to Ghana, this conversation provides invaluable guidance on navigating one of Africa's most promising real estate markets. Trigger warning: includes frank discussion of eating disorders, body image, and mental health. How do you find laughter in something that nearly kills you? In this episode, comedian and mental health advocate Dave Chawner takes us on a bold, brutally honest - and often hilarious - journey through his experience of living with anorexia. But this isn't your typical “overcoming adversity” tale. Dave doesn't sugarcoat the reality of his eating disorder. He talks openly about how it began not with food, but with control… how it was rewarded before it was recognised… and how, for a long time, he loved it. Through vivid, sometimes shocking, and darkly funny anecdotes, Dave shows how anorexia became both his obsession and his comfort - until it became unbearable. And yet, laughter is what pulled him through. From bingeing under the duvet to bingeing on comedy, Dave found healing not in silence, but in stand-up. His hit Edinburgh show Normally Abnormal turned personal pain into public catharsis, proving that humour can be both a scalpel and a salve. If you've ever struggled with food, control, body image, or just the pressure of being “fine,” this is an episode you need to hear. It's about anorexia, yes - but also about masculinity, identity, recovery, and how comedy can reach where words often fail. If you can relate to Dave's experience and would like more information, he references two websites: Hub of Hope [https://hubofhope.co.uk/] - the UK's largest mental health support directory, and Beat Eating Discorder [https://www.beateatingdisorders.org.uk/]. You can find equivalent resources available in other countries via simple web searches. We always recommend you speak to a GP or health professional if you are personally affected by any of the topics covered in the podcast.
In this week's Despatch, Karl Williams of the Centre for Policy Studies unpacks Labour's long-awaited immigration white paper — and asks whether anything's really changed. From sky-high net migration targets to fudged visa reforms and a rebrand of the widely abused ‘shortage occupation' list, Labour's plans are long on rhetoric but risk being short on action. Worse still, the numbers show that even now, the UK's immigration model remains historically unprecedented, economically unsustainable, and politically combustible. Will Labour's technocratic tinkering bring about genuine reform — or is it just more of the same? This is a clear-eyed look at the promises, the policy and the political price of failure.Stay informed with CapX's unmissable daily briefings from the heart of Westminster. Meet my friends, Clay Travis and Buck Sexton! If you love Verdict, the Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show might also be in your audio wheelhouse. Politics, news analysis, and some pop culture and comedy thrown in too. Here’s a sample episode recapping four Thursday takeaways. Give the guys a listen and then follow and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts: HERE The Big Coverup The hour opens with analysis of former President Donald Trump's trip to the Middle East, including his visit with U.S. troops in Qatar and ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent a nuclear Iran without engaging in war. The hosts highlight the potential for Trump to achieve peace in the region, even speculating on his worthiness for a Nobel Peace Prize—despite media resistance. A major focus of this hour is the explosive revelations surrounding President Joe Biden’s cognitive decline. Clay and Buck dissect new reports suggesting Biden frequently forgot the names of his top advisors, including long-time aides like Jake Sullivan and Kate Bedingfield. They argue that this is not a recent development, but a long-standing issue that was deliberately concealed by the media and Democratic leadership. The hosts call it a “vast left-wing conspiracy” to hide Biden’s mental and physical health from the American public, comparing it to the media’s treatment of January 6 and demanding congressional hearings to investigate the cover-up. The discussion also touches on the implications of the 25th Amendment, questioning why it was never invoked despite clear signs of presidential incapacity. Clay and Buck criticize the mainstream media, particularly CNN and MSNBC, for their complicity and dishonesty, asserting that many journalists knowingly misled the public. They also question the role of Vice President Kamala Harris and First Lady Jill Biden in perpetuating the alleged deception. Did you buy the dip? The Stock Market’s recovery and falling gas prices — developments they claim are being ignored by left-leaning media outlets. They also tease breaking news about Rep. Jim Jordan’s investigation into Pfizer allegedly delaying COVID-19 vaccine trial results to influence the 2020 election, further fueling claims of widespread institutional manipulation. Trump is working on no war in the Middle East and no nuclear Iran Supreme Court Rulings Hour 2 of The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show delivers a high-energy, in-depth analysis of the latest political and legal developments shaping the 2024 election cycle and beyond. The hour opens with a discussion of explosive claims from OH Rep. Jim Jordan, who alleges that Pfizer executives may have deliberately withheld COVID-19 vaccine trial results before the 2020 election—potentially influencing the outcome. Clay and Buck connect this to broader concerns about election integrity, media manipulation, and the growing list of revelations surrounding the so-called “rig job” of 2020. A major focus of this hour is the Supreme Court’s oral arguments on two critical issues: the legality of President Trump’s executive order on birthright citizenship and the constitutionality of nationwide injunctions issued by federal district court judges. The hosts break down the legal complexities, emphasizing how a single lower court judge currently holds outsized power to block presidential actions nationwide—an imbalance that undermines the separation of powers. Justice Clarence Thomas’s remarks are highlighted to show how this practice only emerged in the 1960s and has since exploded, particularly in left-leaning circuits like the Ninth. Status vs. Wealth Trump’s speech to U.S. troops stationed in Qatar, where he emphasized military strength, patriotism, and announced substantial pay raises for service members. Clay and Buck highlight the Trump administration’s success in revitalizing military recruitment and shifting the Pentagon’s focus back to national defense rather than progressive social agendas. The hosts then pivot to Trump’s diplomatic breakthroughs in the Middle East, including potential normalization with Syria and ongoing negotiations with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and even Iran. They underscore how Trump’s foreign policy is isolating Iran while strengthening U.S. alliances—moves that even some Democrats are quietly praising. On the economic front, Clay and Buck analyze new data showing falling gas prices, stable inflation, and strong retail sales, debunking fears that Trump’s tariffs would trigger a recession. They argue that the mainstream media’s silence on positive economic indicators—especially the dramatic drop in gas prices—reveals a clear bias. The hosts emphasize how lower energy costs are weakening adversaries like Russia and Iran while benefiting everyday Americans. The conversation then shifts to a broader discussion of American prosperity, with Buck explaining how the U.S. economy remains the most powerful wealth-generation engine in history. They contrast Trump’s pro-growth, pro-business policies with the Democrats’ obsession with regulation, wealth redistribution, and status-driven politics. Clay adds that even the poorest Americans enjoy a higher standard of living than most people globally, citing data that Mississippi is wealthier per capita than the UK. Welcome back to Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu. In this episode, I sit down with my co-host Drew to rip into one of the most turbulent weeks in global politics and economics we've seen in a long time. We break down not just the moves, but the motives and the possible massive consequences behind Trump's high-octane foreign policy—from slashing tariffs with China and locking in a colossal Saudi investment deal, to taking the unprecedented step of targeting Big Pharma with an executive order to lower drug prices. We get into whether all this fast action is actually helping America or just stirring up more chaos. Are we leveraging our moment, or just getting played by the likes of Xi and Putin? Does tough talk and bold negotiating end with real results for America, or are we setting ourselves up for long-term headaches, especially with midterms on the horizon? Then we peel back the layers on some of the rawest culture war issues, from immigration crackdowns in the UK, the controversy about a Muslim-majority city in Texas, to the viral video of world leaders acting out-of-pocket on a train to Kiev. Jacque Waller was a 39-year-old, mother of triplets, who tragically disappeared on June 1, 2011, in Jackson, Missouri. She had been in the process of divorcing her estranged husband, Clay Waller, when she vanished after meeting him to finalize paperwork. Her abandoned Honda Pilot was found along Interstate 55, but Jacque was missing. Investigators suspected Clay from the beginning, but it took months before they could charge him. In April 2012, he was officially charged with first-degree murder, and later, as part of a plea deal, he led authorities to Jacque's remains and admitted to killing her. Jacque's case has been featured in multiple true-crime documentaries, highlighting the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of seeking help. Coco's back! She's both sleep and politics deprived, but Nish is ready to fill her in. The government's shake-up of legal migration laws landed this week - but the news has been dominated by one question. Is Keir Starmer Enoch Powell incarnate? His speech warned that we ‘risk becoming an island of strangers, not a nation that walks together' - a careless comment or a reaction to Reform gains? Nish and Coco dissect and take a deep dive into the government's plans with Minnie Rahman, CEO of migrants' rights charity Praxis. Next up, the Government are jumping for joy about the US-UK trade deal, but Nish struggles to find anything to say… is this just a downgrade portrayed as an upgrade? The race for the next leader of the Greens is on, and will Youngblud make a foray into politics? Nish and Coco discuss how to capture the youth vote. And grassroots football teams are fighting back against the FA's ban on trans women playing football. The Prime Minister is in Albania today to focus on immigration: the government has announced that the UK is in talks to set up 'return hubs' with other countries to send failed asylum seekers abroad. Unfortunately for the government though, also going abroad are Britain's millionaires. In the cover article for this week's Spectator, our economics editor Michael Simmons writes that London lost 11,300 dollar millionaires last year alone. These figures run in stark contrast to today's news that GDP increased by 0.7% in the first quarter of 2025. This continues a trend of mixed signals for Britain's economy. Also on the podcast Spectator editor Michael Gove discusses his interview with justice secretary Shabana Mahmood, who announced today that some reoffenders will be recalled to parliament for a reduced, fixed amount of time to relieve the pressure on prisons. Both Michaels join Lucy Dunn to discuss further, and for the full interview with Shabana Mahmood click through to Spectator TV. Produced by Patrick Gibbons.
