Jeff Immelt is the former CEO of General Electric and author of the new book: Hot Seat: What I Learned From Leading A Great American Company. Jeff has had a lot of critics over the years and stepping into a role after the legendary Jack Welch was not an easy task. In his 16 years leading GE as the CEO he had to lead the company through 9/11, the financial crisis, and the 2011 meltdown of the Fukushima’s nuclear reactors--which were designed by GE. He definitely knows what it’s like to lead under pressure. Why Jeff wrote his book (he almost didn’t) Jeff admits that his career didn’t end the way he wanted it to. As he shares, “I was just unhappy, I felt like the whole narrative around GE had been lost. And that, you know, truth equals really facts plus context. And I felt like the context had been lost. So one of the reasons why I wrote it is, I wanted to tell a more complete story. I didn't want it to be defensive, I wanted it to be complete.” Jeff, who is also a Lecturer in Management at Stanford University Graduate School of Business, says that his students don’t want to learn from a perfect leader who has everything figured out. These students have lived through financial crisis, Covid, and turbulent times---they want to know how to survive through volatility and what to do when things don’t work out. Because of this he felt like there was also an audience for his book that wouldn’t necessarily care about GE. Those are the two main reasons he wrote his book. If there is one message that Jeff would like his critics to take from the book it would be that there were people in the company that tried their best and did perform well. “If you look at cumulative earnings, market share, you know, if you go back to 2016, this was a top 20 market cap company. It was number seven on Fortune most admired, it was number one on companies to hire leaders. We were leaders in digitization and globalization, you know, but the stock didn't work. succession planning didn't work, there were things that didn't work.” He says it would be one thing if the criticism was just about him, but there are thousands of people that have been hurt through this process, and this book sets out to correct that. What was it like working with Jack Welch Jack Welch, who passed away in 2020, is still considered one of the most famous CEOs of the century. Jeff was actually the CEO that took over after Jack left. So what was it like working for Jack? Jeff says Jack was challenging, giving, and creative. He was someone who liked to portray himself as “tough as nails” but Jeff says that’s not the person he saw. He was one of the best leaders to run something at scale and he was a great communicator. Jeff says this about taking over for Jack, “But by the end of the 90s, it was a company where perception didn't equal reality. We were 50% financial 50%, kind of an old industrial company. We traded like Amazon at a 50 P/E. And so kind of following him, you know, the trick was to drive the appropriate kind of change, while never looking backwards and never casting blame. And that's challenging. Look, it's easier to follow a jerk than it is to follow, you know, the best leader of the previous century. Right. But I never wanted to be him. I never wanted to act like him. And I felt like the company needed change.” While there were elements of his leadership style that were timeless, like his focus on people and metrics, there were also some elements that wouldn’t work well in an organization today. Jeff says that Jack didn’t really respect technology and he had an element of short-termism, that with the pace of change, would be a problem. Jack also believed you shouldn’t do anything as a leader unless you can control it, but as Jeff shares there are a lot of things that as a CEO of a public company you just can’t control. “I think, you know, the trick with every generation of leadership is to pick the things that travel that work, and pick the new things that have to be part of, you know, making a company vibrant and competitive in the next generation. And so I think that's the way I would assess how much would work and how much wouldn't work in this generation.” What was it like leading a company during 9/11 Jeff was on a business trip to Seattle when the attack happened and he saw it on the TV in the gym at the hotel he was staying at. He ended up getting stuck in Seattle until planes started flying again a week later. But immediately after it happened he started crisis call sessions with his team. One thing he says he learned from that experience was that leaders should be shock absorbers of fear, not accelerants of fear. “You learn to hold two truths at the same time--that things can always get worse, but that things can also have a future and you need to focus on that. You have to communicate like, hourly, daily, and we did a lot of that.” And in times of crisis leaders have to be able to take action, some decisions will work well and some won’t, but there are things that have to be confronted right away. During 9/11, the financial crisis, and Covid leaders had to find a way to lead without a playbook. How do you do that? Jeff says it starts with surrounding yourself with people you can trust and talk to. After that it is important to have a sense of timing and an idea of what tasks need to be prioritized and what things can be left for later. And the last thing that leaders in tough times have to be able to do is deal with criticism. “When you don't have a playbook you have to be willing, when people say wrong things about you, you have to be very contemporary with it with the respect of owning the narrative and controlling the communication, and things like that. Because they can set you back so good leader's flexible point of view. Learn every minute of every day, and be willing to push back when people get it wrong.” How Jeff deals with imposter syndrome Over his career Jeff says there have been many times when he has doubted himself or questioned his decisions. When it comes to imposter syndrome Jeff says it is important for leaders to have reservoirs of self confidence, self reflection, and self renewal. You have to be able to look at yourself in the mirror and believe you can do it. You have to keep showing up and always do your best. It is also important to have friends around you who will encourage you, cheer you up, coach you, and pick you up when you’re down. And you can only build these friendships in normal times, you can’t wait until times of crisis to build these friendships--at that point it’s too late. A strategy Jeff has used to be a more effective leader One of the things that has set him apart from other leaders over the years is what Jeff calls his external focus. He traveled a lot for business, and wherever he was he would take time to connect with the people there in their own setting to see what they were working on and things they were thinking about. He made it a point to connect with customers, other leaders, scientists, experts and that really allowed him to stay ahead of the game. Because of this skill GE was an early player in globalization, digitalization, environmental investing and much more. Jeff’s advice for current and future leaders If there is one thing that Jeff has learned over his career that he would like to pass on to others, it’s this--study how people work. You should be able to envision how everyone in your organization does their job. You don’t have to necessarily be able to do the job yourself, but you should know what kind of tools they use, how the teams work together, what metrics move them, etc… “Frequently I go to a CEOs office, and I'm always looking at their wall to see what connects them to the frontline worker. And if I walk in an office, and it's just artwork, and statues and crap like that, then I don't believe what the value statement says. I'm looking for, like, a picture where they were walking the floor with a nurse, or a picture of a jet engine or something like that.” Advice that Jeff received early on in his career was to make sure, no matter how big of a company he worked for, that he connected with the people there and knew how they got their work done.

Debbie talks with Jeff Hamaoui, Modern Elder Academy Co-founder and Chief Education and Innovation Officer, about getting through the "messy middle" of this pandemic transition year as we all wonder what comes next.If you’ve been listening to the podcast for a while you’ve heard her mention MEA and you might have heard her interviews with founder Chip Conley. You'll recall that she's been to this remarkably beautiful and healing place in Baja California, Mexico. MEA is a program, or an academy, where you focus on re-thinking what it means to get older and how to become a wise, or modern, elder. This winter Debbie joined MEA’s online program, Navigating Midlife Transitions. She felt acutely that she needed time and space to reflect on - and make sense of - this pandemic “gap” year. And that she needed to do it with a group of like-minded individuals. Jeff’s guidance through the program was truly provocative. So she called him to dive a little deeper.Aren’t we all, this year, in the middle of a transition that isn’t complete yet? Jeff, and others who have studied transitions (most notably William Bridges), call this the "messy middle." It’s a period that’s not easy, or comfortable, to get through. The old has ended but the new has not yet started or at least it’s not clear what the new will be. And not just for society but for each of us individually.Debbie and Jeff talk about:Why Jeff's interest in transitionsWhat is a modern elderThe anatomy of a transitionThe concept of messy middles and how to get through themWhy a growth mindset is importantPattern interruption - why you need to go to a place to rethink aging and midlifeAt the end of the episode, listen for the sound of birdsong and water trickling from a fountain as Debbie reports back from a recent visit to the MEA campus in Baja with her husband Sam. We put them on our bodies every day. We run in them, and we sleep in them. We have our best and worst moments in them. I’m talking about clothes, and they’ve been a part of human history for thousands of years. But what we may not be aware of is what our clothes are made of can impact our health. Sustainable fashion is something we all should be thinking about, for ourselves and for the future. WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW. On this podcast, you'll hear me, Darin Olien, "the superfood hunter," have honest conversations with the extraordinary people that inspire me. I hope that through their knowledge and unique perspectives, they'll inspire you, too. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time. So, if you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition, and healing the planet, this podcast is for you. Jeff Garner wants to know what your underwear is made of. We don’t think much about the clothes we put on in the morning. But for Jeff, it’s all he thinks about. Growing up in a Civil War town on a horse farm in Tennessee, his friends weren’t much into fashion. But didn’t stop him from designing all their clothes. He appreciated the little things about clothes that most of us take for granted. An old cardigan from his grandfather, a lacy scarf from his grandmother - all these things were timeless inspiration pieces for him. But it wasn’t just about looks for Jeff. As a successful fashion designer, he cares about the fabrics and materials he uses in each design. His childhood was full of organic, natural materials that his family valued. But as he entered California’s fashion world, he realized “natural” wasn’t always what it claimed to be. With his couture line Prophetik, Jeff’s mission is to offer beautiful, unique clothing dyed with plants and made with naturally sustainable fiber. Jeff is an artist at heart, and he showcases that in every piece he creates. But it’s more than just fashion to Jeff. In this episode, he explains the toxic chemicals present in most store bought garments and the horrible effects they have on our health. He tells me why the fabric we choose for our underwear and sheets is the most important. I’m not a fashion guy, so Jeff really opened my eyes to things I was never aware of. Our addiction to cheap clothes is not only harming our health, but it’s also fueling an industry free from regulation and free from accountability. This trickle-down effect is detrimental not only to us, but to the people around the world forced to work under inhumane conditions, and their surrounding environments. Jeff has renewed my focus for sure, and I hope this conversation will do the same for you. Other great info in this episode: Jeff’s origin story into the world of fashion How Prophetik came to be Why we should all buy hemp underwear and sheets The lies we’re fed about polyester Why Jeff makes his own silk board shorts Why we all need to shift our thinking on how much we should pay for a piece of clothing Hemp, hemp and more hemp The beauty of plant-based dyes The perils of yoga pants How profit and greed taints the fashion industry The Bra Lick Test Why we should all sleep nude Victoria Secrets’ secrets Links & Resources: Prophetik Jeff’s Website Shop Sustainable Toxin-Free Undergarments Tips for Finding Less Toxic Clothing Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code “DARIN” The Darin Olien Show is produced by the team at Must Amplify. In today's episode I speak with Jeff Cronkshaw, Founder and Group Managing Director of LanciaConsult. The rapidly growing multinational consulting firm with offices in Singapore, Hong Kong, Germany and here in the UK. I got to know Jeff through one of my previous guests; A former boss, mentor and role model of his who he'd heard on this podcast. Jeff and I had a few conversations, he shared his story and hearing the journey he's been on with LanciaConsult, I knew he'd make a great guest for the show. There are many things in Jeff's story that are unique and firsts for Climb In Consulting. He's had a truly global career and has spent half of his working life in Asia, where he and his wife founded LanciaConsult. Not content with simply starting a consulting business based in Singapore, Jeff and his wife set out to launch a global business and have deliberately focused on growing their geographic footprint over growing within one specific region. Something that no other guest that I've interviewed to date has done. In today's episode we dig into the Lancia story, and talk about what it's like to grow a global business from day one and all of the challenges and complexities that come with it. We cover so much ground in this conversation, including: - Why Jeff and his wife decided to move to Singapore in the first place and his advice for anyone thinking of making a similar move. - The LanciaConsult journey, how Jeff and the team have successfully grown the business across multiple regions so quickly and the lessons he's learnt from the last 8 years of building the firm. - And Jeff's top questions for anyone thinking of going out on their own. What you need to ask yourself, and what you should talk about with your life partner, especially if you're thinking of going into business together. This was a great conversation and one that I really enjoyed. Jeff was kind enough to make the trip to our office in Bath for a real, live, in person, socially distant interview. It made for a great conversation, a great dinner afterwards and so much great advice for you to learn from. With 2021 fast approaching, if you're currently thinking about new years resolutions and have moving abroad or starting your own consulting business on your bucket list, then I know you'll get a ton from this conversation. It's not uncommon these days to hear talk of businesses, large and small, developing a purpose statement that has to do with its societal responsibility. Consumers are coming to expect brands to take such a stance as well. Why is that and how should business leaders think about it? But a more important question is this: How does the issue of organizational purpose magnify and support what is happening in the renewable energy movement? To answer that question, Smart Energy Decisions founder, John Failla invited author and consumer expert Jeff Fromm to discuss the issue, along with David Smart, Sr. Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Biostar, a company that's taking this issue of “purpose” very seriously with Jeff's help. This is an enlightening and helpful conversation that you're sure to enjoy. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... The concept of doing well by doing good [0:56] How Jeff became the leading researcher on younger consumer behavior [5:24] The level of detail necessary to define a company's purpose [12:10] Why it was important for Biostar to establish a relationship with Jeff's work [15:46] Business “wins” that happened because of Biostar's commitment to renewables [24:28] Why Jeff created a “workbook” style resource instead of a typical research-based book [28:40] The first steps at identifying and defining your company's purpose [31:45] Purpose is a rapidly growing part of what consumers want in a brand Jeff Fromm's research into the consumer behavior of generational groups has revealed that a brand's broader purpose and the messaging around it make a HUGE difference to consumers. He says there's a very clear and careful balancing act that organizations must be aware of. If your brand is only focused on purpose and sustainability without also being careful to produce an excellent product or service that consumers appreciate, you are going to fail. But if you are only good at that product or service and do not have a clear and well-communicated purpose and sustainability strategy infused into your brand and business, you're not going to have the most profitable financial outcomes. It's becoming more and more apparent that this two-factor brand identification drives consumer support, but take note: One important aspect of that is the issue of sustainability. Jeff says that consumers today are willing to pay a small premium for brands that win their hearts. But there they must also be careful that they are using purpose metaphorically as a verb. Consumers don't care so much about what you say, they care about what you do. Companies that are taking action appeal to both internal audiences and external stakeholders. High-growth brands have to do both. What is the purpose? The Biostar journey toward projects that match their purpose In developing its purpose strategy the team at Biostar was so impressed with Jeff's approach they adopted it for developing their own purpose strategy. Using the workbook, the “Purpose Advantage,” the team worked through the process of defining their purpose and feels it has helped them in a variety of ways. Here's an example… Biostar works with many organizations around the issue of financing for their project. As a result, relationships the company has with various banks, lenders, and insurance companies open doors to many deals for Biostar. With so many projects coming their way, they have to be selective. The question, “What is the purpose of this project?” helps the company sift through the opportunities and focus on the ones that will best align with its purpose as a company. It's a great asset to know that they are putting their best effort toward their predefined “best” types of projects and saying ”No, thank you” to the rest. How brands can leverage a genuine purpose with consumers There are unique opportunities for brands to use their commitment to renewable energy to expand their offerings and profitability and to be more competitive in their niche. Jeff says that the energy category and related adjacencies have a particularly bright future because consumer expectations around the issue of renewable energy are growing. People are fed up with delays and lack of movement when it comes to the energy transition and are looking to companies to move the needle forward. When consumers have the opportunity to buy from companies that support the causes they care about, they often will. Consider this: When the price difference between products or services is small and the availability is the same, many consumers will choose the brand that aligns with their convictions. It's a trend and is only expected to grow. The renewable energy commitments of brands are one of the areas consumers consider these days when making purchasing decisions. There are many facets of this intriguing conversation that we can't cover in a page this small. Please, take the time to listen. You may discover how your brand can pivot to become more relevant, more top-of-mind, and more desirable to the very audience you're trying to reach. Are you sick and tired of the pandemic yet? It has certainly upended all our lives. The fact is, though, while it's easy to fall into negativity... ...There comes a time when you have to dig deep and take back control. In other words, no matter how bad things get... ...YOU are the one with the power to change them. You cannot afford to give in to the "victim mindset." And NONE of us is immune to that danger! In this week's podcast episode, Modern Combat & Survival's Jeff Anderson explains what we've learned so far from the pandemic, what we can all do to start taking back control of our lives, and why he has a personal confession of his own that relates to the past year. Here's What You'll Discover In This Week's Episode: Steps you can take during the pandemic to regain your sense of control over your life. Why a "good deed" for your neighbors or a total stranger could help YOU get through the pandemic. Why being a survivalist or "prepper" puts you in a unique position to be able to help people. Why Jeff himself has been going through a remarkably difficult time in the last year... and how it affected him until he "got his mind right." How YOU can change your attitude in order to overcome the challenges that we all face now. No emergency lasts forever... but being prepared is a lifestyle. Learn how to approach your own life, and triumph over every challenge, in this week's episode.
Today’s conversation is with Dan Davidowitz and Jeff Mueller of Polen Capital, which is a firm that is dedicated to researching and analyzing the highest-quality companies around the globe and investing for the long haul and with a business owner’s mindset. Dan is the co-head of the Large Company Growth Team and the lead portfolio manager of the firm’s flagship Focus Growth strategy. Jeff is co-portfolio manager of the Global Growth strategy and earned his MBA from Columbia Business School, where he was a graduate with honors and distinction of the Value Investing Program. This episode is our third recording since the coronavirus health crisis, and we have kept doing it remotely. Since Spring Break, Columbia Business School has gone fully online and I am absolutely in awe of how the school has been able to pivot to this new format almost seamlessly and we owe this to the terrific people who have been working tirelessly throughout this challenging period and who deserve all our appreciation. My goal with these episodes is to bring guests on who can help us navigate the investment environment and the enormous uncertainty surrounding the economic impact of the virus, which in my opinion is far from clear. I believe our listeners should be focusing on a rigorous, bottom-up approach or on funds that practice a bottom-up approach that is resilient to a variety of scenarios. Thus far the economic impact is probably a bit under-estimated, but it affects different sectors differently and thus the opportunity to build a resilient portfolio is there. On this episode, Dan, Jeff and I discuss how they developed their investment philosophies, what value means in today’s market environment, what you need to know about investing in compounders, the value of guardrails, and so much more! Key Topics: The impact of the current coronavirus pandemic on life at Columbia University (1:02) How Dan found an interest in business and finance while pursuing studies in Public Health (6:13) What Dan’s first buy-side job taught him about value investing (7:54) Why frustration led Dan to learn more about the modern approach to value investing (9:00) Polen’s compounder approach to value investing (9:42) The importance of being with an organization whose approach aligns with your investment philosophy (11:07) How the events of September 11, 2001 re-routed Jeff’s career (12:15) Why Jeff set himself the goal of attending Columbia University (13:02) Jeff’s philosophy on wealth generation and investment (14:24) The evolution of the US financial markets since Graham’s first writings (15:20) What does value mean today (21:00) The key elements to consider when analyzing compounders (24:32) Why Polen doesn’t seek new investment opportunities based on economic trends (29:53) Polen’s approach to quality analysis of potential investments (34:57) Investing within a small pool of potential companies (40:22) The never-ending quest for knowledge (42:51) What moat attacks reveal about barriers to entry (44:53) Polen’s perspective on building resilient portfolios (50:07) How the Polen Focus Growth portfolio has been adjusted in light of the coronavirus crisis (54:57) The importance of Polen’s guardrails (57:44) The changes to the Polen Global Growth portfolio in the current crisis (59:25) Dan and Jeff’s outlook for the future of value investing (1:02:08) And much more! Today’s conversation is with Tom Russo, the master of consumer brand investing, and two of our best students, Jeffrey Johnson and Michael Allison. We’re talking about the 5x5x5 Student Investment Fund and having a deep discussion about some of the specific stocks in the portfolio. The concept for the 5x5x5 fund came out of Tom’s concern that conventional investment funds for students offered limited learning potential due to their short-term nature and was made possible by a generous gift given by him and his wife, Georgina. The 5x5x5 fund is run by the students of the Value Investing course at Columbia Business School, with ideas being submitted by the students each year. Students then have the opportunity to connect value-oriented investment theories to real-world practice as they participate in the management of the fund. Importantly, they are also connected with alumni and are afforded valuable networking opportunities. At the end of five years, the inflation-adjusted original amount is invested back into the fund and any other gains will be used to support scholarships for traditionally under-represented members of the class. On this episode, Tom, Jeff, Mike, and I discuss how the 5x5x5 Student Investment Fund got started, how this fund differs from student funds at other schools, what goes into the investment decisions, how participation in the fund benefits students, why some of this year’s investments were selected, and so much more! Key Topics: The 5x5x5 nature of the student value investing fund (2:24) The multiple benefits to be derived from the fund (3:29) How 5x5x5 will become self-funding (4:01) The investment selection process (4:34) Why Tom is proud of the tough questions raised by students (5:28) Why it’s so important to monitor how your original thesis is playing out (5:46) Some of the notable investments in the history of the portfolio (6:07) How student participation in the fund can lead to important networking opportunities (6:50) A deep dive into some of the companies in the fund (8:30) Why Tom is excited about the poor performance of the international stocks in the portfolio (11:01) The five stocks that made it into the portfolio this year (13:15) Jeff’s pitch for adding Booking Holdings to the 5x5x5 portfolio (14:09) The business model and competitive advantages of Booking Holdings (15:19) How Booking Holdings differentiates itself from Expedia (19:24) What Booking Holdings is investing its free cash flow into (21:45) Why Jeff chose to pitch Booking Holdings (22:57) Jeff’s analysis of Booking Holdings’ valuation (24:53) What you can learn by comparing where an industry is in relation to GDP (26:08) The growth potential of Booking Holdings’ Airbnb-type listings (30:24) Mike’s pitch for adding Becle, S.A.B. de C.V. (“Cuervo”) to the 5x5x5 portfolio (31:56) How the limited supply of blue agave is impacting Cuervo’s valuation (33:16) The governance, ownership structure and long-term growth potential of Cuervo (37:53) Why the tequila industry is experiencing such consistent growth (39:33) Mike’s analysis of Cuervo’s valuation (44:39) The story behind the acquisition of Bushmills whiskey (48:02) Winter Li’s pitch for adding Rollins to the 5x5x5 portfolio (51:41) Rollins’ competitive advantages (52:56) Winter’s analysis of Rollins’ valuation (53:58) And much more! Medicinal mushrooms are fungal organisms sold as health foods, nutritional supplements, so-called nutraceuticals, and, on occasion, cosmetics ingredients. They are part of an extensive natural health products category in Asia, where traditional Chinese medicine has utilized mushroom preparations for thousands of years. With the popularity of superfoods and ways you can optimize your health, this episode is packed with new and useful information you won’t want to miss! In this fascinating episode we talk about… The nutritional benefits of mushrooms as “food as medicine” What are medicinal mushrooms and their primary uses The main active ingredients and nutritional profile of both edible and medicinal mushrooms How to easily consume and prepare edible mushrooms to gain the most nutritional benefit How many consumers and even health practitioners are being misled when it comes to mushroom products Why Jeff traveled to China to learn about mushrooms and how he started the first organic mushroom farm in China If we should be concerned about the pollution in China and mushrooms grown outside the U.S. If it’s important is it to buy organic mushrooms How you can know if you’re purchasing a quality mushroom supplement Why you might want to use a mushroom supplement, or simply incorporate more edible mushrooms into your diet Mentioned in this episode... Jeff Dube is a 20-year real estate investor from Jacksonville, Florida who has found success in diverse areas of real estate investing, specializing in rental properties but having extensive experience in many different aspects of real estate. Jeff has recently begun bidding at tax auctions in both Florida and Georgia, and his experiences as a relative newcomer can give you valuable insight into what to expect at your first few auctions. What You Will Learn: In the first half of the episode, Ted speaks with Bill Williams about a recent tax auction he attended in Florida. Bill discusses how there were around 10,000 tax lien certificates available at the auction. Bill shares how Florida holds almost all of its auctions entirely online, and he shares how Florida requires a 10% deposit based upon your maximum bid. Bill discusses how auctions in Florida work and explains why it isn't necessary to visit the property in person in that state. Bill shares how he used tools provided by the company that conducts tax auctions in Florida to filter out interesting properties from the list of 10,000 available. Bill discusses how the auction was conducted in two-hour blocks. He provides details of a specific example from the previous year's auction and how he received a 5% return in just 2 1/2 months on the property. Bill explains how a computer randomly selects a winner from all of the matching winning bids. Bill shares some of the key takeaways he learned at the auction. He shares the story of one of Ted's students named Josie, who had a massive win at a tax auction in Texas that resulted in around a $30,000 profit in about nine months. In the second half of the episode, Ted speaks with his special guest, Jeff Dube. Jeff is a skilled real estate investor with more than 20 years of experience primarily in rentals, though he has recently begun attending tax auctions. In this section of the episode, you will learn: Why rental properties aren't a get-rich-quick scheme but require hard work, dedication, and knowledge Why tax auctions can be highly competitive and unpredictable, and why Jeff chose to attend a tax auction in the neighboring state of Georgia Why Jeff's bidding criteria changes based upon specific details of the property he's considering bidding on Why tax deed auctions in Georgia offer passive, low-effort investments with a minimum return of 20% of your investment How Jeff evaluates a property, and why he makes a point of viewing the exterior of the home to determine what the interior is likely to look like What kinds of returns Jeff is anticipating from the thirteen properties he won at auction in his first year of investing What valuable experience Jeff has gained during his first year of investing, and why he feels he will only get better at investing in tax auctions with time Why tax auctions have offered Jeff a great rate of return compared to the other types of investments he is involved in Why Jeff feels that new investors should take their time and have a routine that can be tweaked and improved Why having a coach to lean on significantly helped Jeff learn and feel confident in his investing strategies

In this latest episode of The Only Business Networking Podcast on iTunes, we have Part 7 of the Who or What Series where Jordan Harbinger from the Jordan Harbinger Show, Amy Porterfield from the Online Marketing Made Easy Podcast, and Jeff Hoffman, serial entrepreneur from Priceline.com and Ubid.com talk to your host Travis Chappell, to continue the debate of whether who you know or what you know is more important, and why. Episode Highlights: Jordan Harbinger: It’s all about who you know - not just connecting up but up, down, and laterally. Your network is the most important resource you have. Short term - your network is great, long term - your network is crucial. How Jordan defines networking - helping people without the expectation of return and in a scalable way. When people help you and keep score they’ll write you off when you don’t reciprocate. Never think about networking transactionally. If you think everyone is taking advantage of you, it’s probably you. If someone won’t help you, even with small things, they’re probably taking advantage of you. Amy Porterfield: Who you know is important to a certain extent, but what you know is also important. People always need things done, so figure out what those things are. How Travis developed a relationship with John Lee Dumas and then got Amy Porterfield on the show. How Amy became friends with Marie Forleo and why she didn’t pay for that friendship. How to get started adding value to others. If you’re an evangelist for what someone is doing you can’t help but notice them. A person of influence is not going to tell you how they want you to support them. Jeff Hoffman: Who you know is more important because you don’t know everything. You’re not as smart as you think you are, and you’re not good at 12 things, you’re good at one thing. If you’re a founder/CEO/Manager you should schedule days to be out of the office to build your network. Why Jeff engages strangers all the time. How Jeff got a Universal Studios executive to come to be a partner in his independent studio. Most people neglect networking because they’re too busy being inefficient to stop and take time to be more efficient. 3 Key Points: Networking is not all about schmoozing people ahead of you, you should be well-connected with everyone - up, down, and laterally. There is not a difference between networking and real relationship building. Don’t build your network when you need it, build it way before you need it. Tweetable Quotes: “The only things people can’t take away from you are your skills and relationships.” -Jordan “You don’t have to be Richard Branson to offer value to people.” -Travis “Your heart has to be in the right place, it’s never about making something happen for you, and then magic happens.” -Amy “The only way to build anything of significance in life is to build a team.” -Jeff Resources Mentioned: Visit Travis’ website at Buildyournetwork.co (http://www.buildyournetwork.co/) Learn more about mentorships and masterminds for FREE at freemmcourse.com/enroll (http://www.freemmcourse.com/join) Download Meet Your Hero at travischappell.com/hero (http://travischappell.com/hero) Explode Your Network at travischappell.com/explode (http://travischappell.com/explode) For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy (https://www.acast.com/privacy)
From a Harvard University Bedroom to a $511.44 Billion dollar business with 2.32 Billion monthly active users, Facebook has reached unprecedented heights in only 15 years. Why is this relevant? Today’s guest is Jeff Turner, International L&D Director with responsibility for all learning & people development outside of North America. Jeff tells us of the lessons he’s learned in developing people at one of the most iconic brands on earth and (exclusive) what he’s about to do next…. can you guess? Ask for referral The perceived kudos of being a supplier to Mark Zuckerberg’s company means, that there is no shortage of vendors trying to get a foot in the door. As a training business owner, how easy is it for you (or your team) to get time with someone like Jeff? What Jeff recommends (when seeking the attention of people like him) is to leverage the power of referral. That means using your network strategically to get an introduction through a mutual contact. TIP – listen to Andy Lopata (Eps 3) explaining why referral is so powerful and why he wrote a best-selling book on the subject. So, when seeking an opportunity to present your training business credentials to prospects, it sometimes makes sense to take the indirect path and let someone else point out why you are worth meeting. Dr. Robert Cialdini refers to this as the principle of Pre-Suasion. Have you given any thought to how you can ‘pre-suade’ your target decision-maker through referral? Get out there I’m a big fan of Billions, the US cable tv series from Showtime starring Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti. In a recent episode of series 4, Bobby Axelrod’s (played by Lewis) hedge fund sustained a massive cyber attack which took the company’s network and entire phone system offline. Absolutely no one could trade and the business was about to lose hundreds of millions of dollars in a single day… [But that wasn’t the worse thing...]: None of the young, but brilliant traders had any connection to the people they bought and sold from…. They didn’t know their phone numbers and couldn’t call them because they had never met them. They didn’t even know what they looked like! They had no relationship to fall back on when they needed help. In this day and age of Facebook, Jeff knows that his network (not his ‘likes’) will make or break his new training business as he leaves the corporate world to go out on his own. So, he gets out there and meets people, builds connections and puts a face to his name. Jeff’s launch won’t be a landing page or a video. It will be a real live event with real live people who can meet him, listen to him and get to know the person they’re buying before they ever buy his brand. Question: What’s your strategy to get out there and meet your buyer face-to-face? Biggest takeaways you don’t want to miss: How Jeff got from sales trainer to directing facebook L&D worldwide How to get the attention of corporate L&D managers when selling your training Why Jeff feels that L&D deserves a place at the strategic level Why workshops alone are not the way to fix impactful leadership problems How Jeff feels about leaving a salary and security to venture out on his own How Jeff plans to market his business to his ideal customers Some helpful resources for you mytformation– Jeff’s new training business website [IRL] eventbrite– Jeff’s launch event ‘Challenging Team Dynamics’ in Dublin [IRL] linkedIn– Jeff’s professional profile on LinkedIn newsroom – Facebook’s newsroom page with up-to-date business statistics

On this LAB Radio, episode Chris Groshong talks shop with Jeff Zhou, founder of TrustNote, a mineable public DAG ledger with a two-tier consensus mechanism. (Cryptographic Algorithms: BLAKE2, BIP32-Ed25519) The architecture is designed for high concurrent transactions and confirmation times. Jeff Zhou, Founder of TrustNote Jeff's background began with chip making and eventually led him to realizing the lack of scalability with Bitcoin: "A few years back Jeff Zhou started working on blockchain and at that time he developed BTC+LTC dual mining chips and hardware, the technology was sold to a world-wide market.Jeff then tried to develop an IoT software platform based on blockchain technology, and after several months of trial and development, he encountered serious issues with scalability and the transaction fees were very high. Issues like these prevent mass adoption of the blockchain technology and ultimately drove the foundation of the TrustNote open source project and its development of a fast, scalable, and light platform to provide high-performance for everyone on every device at a lower cost." Now with TrustNote Jeff aims to create a new alternative architecture to the traditional Blockchain construct. The TrustNote whitepaper elaborates on the details of the project and core architecture: "Today’s blockchain technologies face many challenges such as network congestion, high transaction fees, and long delays in transaction confirmation. TrustNote seeks to address these problems by building the world-leading public Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) ledger which is minable, capable of handling high concurrent transactions yet still maintain quick transaction confirmation." Above is a breakdown of how the TrustNote DAG compares with two other DAG focused projects, IOTA and Byteball. After listening to this episode you will learn: About how Jeff worked on secret projects for the Chinese Government before moving into the chip-making industry How they combined multiple algorithms into one chip (allowing multiple mining algorithms under one unit) Why Mining is big and concentrated in China Jeffs thoughts on China and how the worlds borders are opening up thanks to technology like Bitcoin What a DAG is and how they are using this technology as a Blockchain alternative Why Consensus is one of the biggest challenges to Blockchains Why they are aiming to solve this through a hybrid approach of architecture options What TrustNote is and how it works and when it's mainnet will be ready Why Jeff began with learning C languages (like C++) but also like other languages like Rust For show notes and more please visit: LAB Radio

I’m so excited to have my friend and fellow masterminder, Jeff Ragan, on the show today. As the founder of KiZE Concepts, his story really showcases what it truly means to be generous. Seeing food as something that links us all together, he took a risk with his peanut butter “fudge-like” bar and founded KiZE Concepts in an effort to change lives through food, service and charity. Jeff admits that the process has always had its challenges – especially since he knew nothing about running a business – but it’s been an enjoyable fight nonetheless because he knows he’s helping others (KiZE helps feed 1,000 kids a day in Haiti) and inspiring others to do the same. Get ready for a knowledge- and inspiration-packed episode that will have you motivated to give more in all areas of life. Jeff’s energy is contagious and I can’t wait to hear what kind of an impact our conversation has on you! In This Episode We Talk About: Where the idea of KiZE originated Jeff’s 3E Principle (Easy, Enjoyable and Energizing) What gives Jeff energy The many KiZE packaging struggles and iterations Why Jeff doesn’t want people to think his company’s generosity is for marketing Being unified by food KiZE’s love-based business model Generosity and giving Being authentic and realizing it’s not about you KiZE’s mission work in Haiti Resources: Receive 20% off any order by using the code CHRIS HARDER at https://kizeconcepts.com/shop Instagram: @kizeconcepts, @thekizeguys Email Jeff at Jeff@kizeconcepts.com See How Your KiZE Support Helps Feed Those Around the World: https://youtu.be/JhM3BcQUw-Q Question Highlights: What is one of your superpowers? What is one thing you’re challenged by? What is one of your favorite accomplishments? Where did the idea of KiZE come from? Were you a budding entrepreneur your entire life or did it begin in college? Where did your generous and loving heart come from? When did you decide to put your “fudge” into a wrapper to sell to people? What was the toughest thing you had to overcome with your business? Can you apply the 3E Principle to business? Where did you get the skill set to build your company? When did feeding 1,000 kids a day become a part of the KiZE mission? Is it better to give out loud or give in the dark? What’s next for KiZE? Quotes “Life happens when you give it away.” “Be great, love people and spread joy.” “The only risk for me was not taking one.” “Between experience and referencing others’ experiences is how you learn.” “The desire to reach your destination keeps you going.” “Resources + Relationships = Real Life Change for the Those Being Given to and the Giver” “See and feed the need.” “You’re either a grower or a slower.” “The pursuit of your dream is your dream.” Jeff Ragan is the joy-filled Founder/CEO of KiZE Concepts Inc., an Oklahoma City-based healthy lifestyle company with a mission, passion, and purpose to change lives through food, service, and charity. KiZE’s flagship product is the KiZE Bars – clean & simple, gluten free, non-GMO, energy bars with a life changing give-back component. Each KiZE Bar helps create local and global impact. KiZE’s global initiative is a community building and transformational relationship in Haiti where 1,000 kids are fed daily in Haiti. Other efforts include providing resources and relationships to create the family-centered orphan home, school, and community to help not only survive but thrive! Jeff’s goal is to change the world for the better by “feeding” people in mind, body, heart, and soul so they live the best life possible and help others do the same. Are you #OnShrooms? If not, why not?! Mushrooms are one of the most popular current wellness trends globally, being spearheaded by health experts and herbalists everywhere. Over the past few years, many outstanding mushroom products have been brought to market, and the industry doesn't seem to be losing steam anytime soon. Jeff Chilton is one of the foremost experts on all things mushrooms and is an absolute veteran of the shroom scene going back decades. He and his colleagues at Nammex introduced medicinal mushrooms to the U.S. nutritional supplement industry back in 1989. And as we stand on the verge of 2019, it's pretty remarkable that medicinal mushrooms are just now starting to hit the mainstream – because the vast history of fungi being used by humans for longevity and consciousness expansion goes back eons. Mushrooms have played an enormous role in Jeff’s life since he was young when a friend came back from Mexico telling tales of Magic Mushrooms. So while in university, Jeff ended up exploring the anthropological history of mushrooms worldwide, including their role in Shamanistic practices. Jeff didn't find much use for an anthropology degree, as it turns out, so Jeff found himself heading 60 miles down the road to work at Ostrom Mushroom Farms in Olympia, Washington in 1973. After ten years growing 10s of millions of pounds of commercial mushrooms – the edible kind that you find in grocery stores – Jeff found himself exploring the medicinal side of mushrooms, particularly the ancient knowledge of Chinese herbalists. But when he tried to bring that knowledge back with him in the 1990s, medicinal mushrooms were a hard sell in the Western world. Even the wellness world wasn’t interested in fungi – luckily for all of us, times have since changed. With decades of research and insight, Jeff answers pretty much every question one might have about mushrooms: What’s the difference between culinary and medicinal mushrooms? Are medicinal mushrooms able to heal everything the internet tells me (spoiler: they’re helpful, not magic) Why is micro-dosing becoming so popular amongst young entrepreneurs and creatives? Were psychedelic mushrooms different 40 years ago, and what place to they have alongside a healthy lifestyle today? Answers to these questions and more are revealed in great detail in this comprehensive study of all things mushrooms. Put your headphones on one, and get ready to take a trip. Topics Discussed In This Episode: Overseeing the growth of 2,000 mushroom crops over the course of a decade – that’s approximately 40,000,000 pounds of mushrooms all together! Starting the United States’ first mushroom conferences The world’s governments that have made PLANTS illegal. The secrets of how and why How our education system shuts down the human mind and creativity The importance of set & setting with psychedelic experiences Surreal microdosing experiences & how microdosing relates to McKenna’s “Stoned Ape” theory of human evolution China actually began cultivating mushrooms as far back as the 12th century The economics of commercial mushroom cultivation VS medicinal supplement production What can go wrong while growing organic mushrooms What makes each species of mushroom unique There’s thousands of species of mushroom in the world... but we can only cultivate about 25 of them! How some of the most popular medicinal mushrooms – cordyceps, reishi, chaga, and lion’s mane – are used to heal the body Why reishi is the mack daddy of adaptogenic mushrooms (and if you’re only going to take just one, make it reishi) Fun fact: chaga isn’t actually a mushroom Don’t listen to everything the internet says – medicinal mushrooms are incredibly helpful, but they’re not magic or a panacea (and shout out to Jeff for having the balls to make this distinction) Why Jeff bought a professional geiger counter after Fukushima The extraction methods for different medicinal mushrooms More about this episode. He began working in the tax industry in 1990 in his father’s two room $50,000 per year tax preparation office. Chauncey sold his ownership stake in the family business in 2007 to concentrate full-time on coaching and consulting business owners and entrepreneurs to greater levels of success. Chauncey has worked directly with over 3,700 tax business owner clients, helping create Million Dollar breakthroughs along the way. Over the past several years, he has seen such an amazing opportunity in the tax industry that he is now getting back into owning tax businesses. This episode is for anyone who believes he is called to found a Catholic apostolate, or anyone who is overseeing one already. In this second part of a two-part interview, CatholicCulture.org founder Jeff Mirus shares more lessons from his decades of experience founding several Catholic organizations. In the mid-80s he left Christendom College to start a publishing company. Then circumstances forced him to transition away from full-time apostolic work which, though painful at the time, providentially set the stage for him to return on more sustainable terms, leading to the present online apostolate. Jeff Walker the #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of Launch: An Internet Millionaire's Secret Formula To Sell Almost Anything Online, Build A Business You Love, And Live The Life Of Your Dreams. Jeff’s launch strategies have transformed the way products are sold online. Before he started talking about his product launch formula, there was almost nobody else talking about product launches. The idea of a million dollar launch even seemed ludicrous, but now no one even bats an eye at a million dollar launch. His techniques aren't just for gurus or people with established platforms. He has helped thousands of students in hundreds of different niches, and they have generated over 500 million dollars in sales using the product launch formula. His book launch was a huge success and we are going to dive into that and the impact it had on his business and The Product Launch Formula itself. We also learn how Jeff was involved in online business since 1996 and created The Product Launch Formula in 2005, and how he hopes the book will cement his legacy. You can find Jeff here: Jeff Walker Website Product Launch Formula The Launch Book Show Notes [01:46] Why Jeff wrote and published Launch. He began online business in 1996 and became really good at launches. [02:04] In 2005, he began teaching launches through the Product Launch Formula. [03:05] Jeff wrote the book to get credit for his Product Launch Formula that he created. He also did it for legacy. [04:43] He also wanted to help people and generate leads for his course. [05:29] Writing the book was a challenge because he was obsessed with making it a good book. [07:03] How writing and editing at the same time wastes time. [08:02] Jeff used early morning writing time on his writing days to get his writing done. [09:06] He used relaxed melodies and binaural beats for 50 minutes at a time. Then a 10-minute break and then back on for another 50 minutes. [10:53] Having a big following and a large list helped make the marketing easier. He also used JV partners and affiliates. [11:55] During a launch you shine every asset you have on your book or product. [12:22] If you don't have a list, start one now. [13:40] He used a 99designs contest for an awesome book cover. Then he let his community vote on the best cover which was great publicity for the book. [15:36] He also created an unboxing video of his first box of books being opened. [16:14] The pre launch gets people engaged and excited. Then he had a pre-sale launch with bonuses. [17:44] He also tested upsells to use with the book like his list-building course. [21:35] Then he ran a special on The Product Launch Formula. [23:38] How the book has impacted future launches of The Product Launch Formula. [24:19] There is one PLF launch a year, the year after the book launch PLF increased by a million dollars. [25:12] Then it increased, even more, the following year up to 5.1 million. [26:10] PLF is a process that romances people into the sale with content. [29:02] The launch ends when you pull the product or when the price goes up or when the bonuses go away. [29:56] For books or lower priced items deliver value ahead of time and get people excited. [32:30] Sustaining sales and gaining momentum. [35:53] How Jeff doubled up marketing efforts to try and make the New York Times Bestseller list. [37:28] To get a bestseller make a great book. [39:02] The book has case studies that drive readers to Jeff's website. This generates leads and they ask for recommendations through word of mouth. [41:05] The book has impacted his business with high-quality leads and opt-ins. [43:02] Podcasts and interviews are also a result of the book. [44:09] Jeff ended up playing tennis with Richard Branson. [44:39] Writing a book is hard and rewarding. Have discipline and write. Get an editor. Launch with a plan and build anticipation. The translation and localization industry has seen some impressive innovations over the past decade, but in many ways, it has remained stubbornly resistant to change. Today we sit down and talk with Jeff Sandford co-founder of Wovn.io. The Wovn team has developed a way to take the pain out of web localization and translation. They promise to do it all with a single line of code. We talk a bit about the mechanics of web-site localization and state of the industry as a whole, and we also discuss some important but surprising differences between with makes compelling UI/UX design for Japanese and for Western users, and what kinds of tasks machine translation can really be trusted with. Jeff also explains why he decided to start a company with someone he had never meet. It’s a great discussion, and I think you’ll really enjoy it. Show Notes for Startups Why website translation is important but often overlooked Why Jeff chose to start a company with someone he had never met How to combat Japan's "Design by Committee" problem Why you should not trust machine translation for e-commerce When you need to change from a bottom-up to top-down sales strategy The challenges of working with Japanese enterprise customers as a startup Advice for foreign engineers and founders who want to come to Japan Why Japan needs to get uncomfortable Links from the Founder Wovn.io homepage Wovn.io on Twitter Wovn.io on Facebook [shareaholic app="share_buttons" id="7994466"] Leave a comment Transcript from Japan Disrupting Japan, episode 86. Welcome to Disrupting Japan, straight talk from Japan’s most successful entrepreneurs. I'm Tim Romero and thanks for joining me. Today we’re going to talk about something that you and I, and probably everyone else listening right now has struggled with. Translation and localization. It’s been an industry that has both seen some impressive innovations over the past decade, but is also somehow quite resistant to change. Localization is a part of business that almost every firm has to deal with, but almost no one looks forward to. It’s a lot like dealing with lawyers in that way, I suppose. Well, today we sit down with Jeff Sandford, cofounder of Wovn.io who say they’ve developed a one line of code method for taking the pain out of localization and translation. We talk a bit about the mechanics of website localization and the state of the industry as a whole, of course. We also talk about the important and surprising differences between what makes great UI/UX with Japanese and western users. And what kind of tasks machine translation can really be trusted with. And Jeff shares a story of what made him decide to start a company with a cofounder who he’d never even met before. But you know, Jeff tells that story much better than I can. So let’s hear from our sponsor, and get right to the interview. [pro_ad_display_adzone id="1411" info_text="Sponsored by" font_color="grey" ] [Interview] Tim: Cheers. Jeff: Cheers. Tim: So I’m sitting with Jeff, cofounder of Minimal Technologies and the creator of Wovn.io. And thanks for sitting down with me today. Jeff: Thank you very much. Good to be here. Tim: Wovn.io at a high level is simply localization for a website. But it’s more than that. It’s more interesting than that so why don’t you tell us a bit about what it is. Jeff: So often people when you tell them you do website localization, they think translation, which it actually isn’t. Translation is a very integral part of it, but what we focus on is the system of localizing a website. So let’s say you have an English website, and you’ll like to create a Chinese version or Spanish version of that website, we handle all of the details of actually creating those versions, and also managing them and serving them to users. Tim: Now there’s a lot of companies that are doing that,

There’s nothing wrong with having fun but when it keeps us in a state of constant distraction from the deeper meaning of life and the purposes behind the work we do, we’re missing a valuable part of life. Anthony chats with his guest on this episode, Jeff Shore about the significance of reading deeply, why it is vital for shaping our thoughts and understanding of the world around us, and the benefits that come from living from a place of intention. The way you grow impacts how much you grow, in life and in business. Much of the reason both Anthony and his guest, Jeff Shore love to read philosophical books is because they’ve come to see that an understanding of the way we grow as human beings deeply impact the rate and quality of our growth. Each of them thinks deeply about who they are, why they are here, and the effect they are having on the world. It’s a great conversation on this episode of In The Arena - one you’ll benefit from greatly. The way you grow impacts how much you grow, in life and in businessClick To Tweet It doesn’t matter how smart you are, it’s "HOW are you smart?" that matters. There is only so much an I.Q. test can tell you. Yes, it may show you that a person is smart. But that’s not the most important thing. What matters is HOW they are smart. In other words, what is their approach to situations, people, and life in general? That is the kind of thing that determines how flexible, adaptable, and able to pivot an individual is - which can dramatically impact his/her ability to succeed. Find out more about this concept of “HOW” you are smart - on this episode of In The Arena. Learning to know what you don’t know is what helps you move beyond your limitations. Everyone tends to gather people around them who confirm their own biases. It’s part of the natural insecurity each of us has. We seek validation of our ideas and beliefs instead of challenging them intentionally for the sake of growth. But once you realize that you don’t know what you don’t know, everything changes. You become curious, eager to learn, open to ideas that may have once been off limits due to previously held beliefs that you discover were not true. This episode is a brief journey through the thoughts of a couple of thinkers. It’s an adventure, so be sure you join them for the trip. Learning to know what you don’t know is what helps you move beyond your limitationsClick To Tweet Outline of this great episode [2:25] Anthony’s introduction of his friend Jeff Shore. The power of reading is something you shouldn’t underestimate. Even if you don’t enjoy reading. That’s because there’s no other resource in the world where you can spend $20 and get a potential return of thousands of dollars, increased happiness, greater success, and a whole lot more. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately because I’m discovering that the older I get the more I appreciate books. On this episode, I’m going to let you listen in on a conversation I had with Jeff Brown, the guy behind the Read to Lead podcast. He’s got some great insights into the power of reading, what it can do for you, and even gives us some tips on how to get more out of our reading. I hope you take the time to listen. 42% of college graduates will never read a book after graduation. Can you believe that? It’s really a shocking statistic but apparently, it’s how the world is going these days. I think it’s a tragic sign of the passive way people are going about life in the modern era. People appear to be losing their motivation to make something of their lives - and it may seem strange that I’m making that conclusion based on stats about the decline of reading, but it’s really common sense. Reading is one of the primary ways anyone can increase their knowledge and improve their life without having to depend on anyone else. But it requires initiative, doesn’t it? On this episode I hope to challenge you to pick up a book and get busy learning, growing, and making more of yourself. It doesn’t matter if you’re retired or not, you can always learn something and make your life happier by reading a book. You’ve heard it said that leaders are readers, right? It turns out it’s true. Every successful person you can think of is a purposeful reader. Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Cuban, and many other highly successful people have openly shared that they read significant amounts every day. In fact, when Elon Musk was asked how he learned to build rockets his answer was, “I read books.” On this episode my guest, Jeff Brown is going to share what he’s discovered about the importance of reading on his path to entrepreneurship after years in the corporate work world. He says it's imperative that you be a reader if you are going to develop the new mindsets you need in order to make a change for the better in your life. And we all want to see “better” happen in our lives, right? Would you like to know how you can better tap into the power of reading? On this episode of The Retirement Answer Man, my goal is to challenge you to increase your happiness and quality of life both before and after your retirement by becoming a more effective reader. Toward that end, I’ve invited Jeff Brown on the show to share some insights from his experience in reading great books and interviewing the people who have written them. You’re going to find yourself not only challenged but also inspired by what Jeff has to share. He’s got some great tips for how you can get even more out of your reading. I hope you’ll take up his challenge to be more intentional about the way you read. My listener recommended book list is ready for you! Here’s how you can get it. Run with Serena Marie, RD, and me at therunninglifestyle.com/my262. Jeff Galloway comes on to discuss my recent 26-mile run and the lessons learned during it. Jeff reveals the times I should use when running in Chicago and specifically, how to run the Galloway Method at the marathon (this may surprise you). We talk about all the tricks the mind plays on a runner when taking on the marathon, for example. Let's just say I share many of the jitters that are common for marathoners. Why Jeff had me run 26 miles before running a marathon What is a magic mile and why it's a good predictor of race pace My stats and why Jeff is recommending a 13:00-14:00 minute pace Why I'm feeling empowered going into Chicago Why Jeff is recommending 20/30 for me Why it's never going to be easy the whole way when you run over 20 miles How to do an Acceleration Glider Why Jeff recommended I stick to 30-minute ElliptiGo rides As you increase the amount in long runs, why your body needs to rest Why recover by using ElliptiGo instead of a short run Why avoid anything that could put extra fatigue on any weak links Join Serena Marie, RD, and me when we “run” Chicago and eat our way through the neighborhoods. You can even join me for a Ride on the ElliptiGo, one of my favorite tools to live the running lifestyle, and a sponsor of the show. Here's what's going "down." Have dinner at Sweetwater Tavern & Grill at 4:30 PM on Friday, October 9th (steps from where the boat drops us off) Meet up for lunch on Saturday, October 10th at 1:30 PM at Weather Mark Tavern (just seven blocks from the expo) Go for a ride with @ElliptiGo on the Lakefront in the morning on Monday, October 12th OR from Fleet Feet, South Loop at 12:30 PM and after. Fleet Feet will have recovery services and tools. They're also going to offer FREE engraving (starting at 12:00 PM) on your Bank of America Chicago Marathon medal. Please contact me, Kari Gormley, to let me know you'll be there so I can give the restaurants an accurate count and to look out for you and/or at Fleet Feet. :-) Returning to Jeff, we cover: How the “Monkey Brain” takes over before a marathon Why I am especially fatigued right now and how it's understandable What is a gremlin and what is the name of my gremlin How far in advance to take the weather “seriously” How to alert fellow runners that you are running Galloway Style (good thing I asked!), and where to put yourself in a corral if you are running Galloway Style It's been a pleasure to work with Jeff and get ready for three marathons. Eeek - three marathons!!!! What is going on????!!!!! All I know is that I have done the work, and the only thing I can control now is my mind, and how I decide to dress for the weather. When you think about it, how much can you really control in life??? Do your clothes have a lingering odor? Or perhaps you are allergic to perfumes. Today’s guest is the award-winning comedian, Jeff Kreisler. He is a triple threat! A writer, performer and producer with impressive Ivy League credentials… who believes that the world can be saved with more thinking, passion, and aggressive naps! I actually had the opportunity to cross paths with him at TheStreet.com. His work, including his bestselling satire “Get Rich Cheating," has been praised by mainstream media including The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, CNBC, and San Francisco Chronicle, among others. Jeff is a sought-after corporate speaker and was the featured comedian at The 2011 Economist's World Conference, alongside former President Bill Clinton. He is a graduate of Princeton and Virginia Law School, a former attorney and private investigator. Several takeaways from our interview: -- Why Jeff turned down 6-figure job opportunities that could have put him on a partner track at leading law firms -- Why he doesn’t like to use automatic bill pay -- The best thing that his parents gave him (hint: it’s not his allowance or first car!)
