How To Tickle Yourself

We cannot believe our senses over here at How to Tickle Yourself, because we got to interview a singer/songwriter who literally lights our souls on fire.    His name is Andrew Combs. Andrew released an EP in 2010, and his first album, Worried Man in 2012. It was an auspicious start. Since then, he has graced us with four more: All These Dreams in 2015, Canyons of My Mind in 2017, Ideal Man in 2019, and Sundays in 2022.   Texas born and Nashville-based, Andrew writes about love as beautifully as any songwriter we have ever heard. But also about the nature of existence. He's got “searching” lyrics - it sounds as if he's trying to find something, the secret of it all. He also sings like an angel, with a timeless voice.   In any event, he's been on quite the artistic journey, from straightforward country/folk to orchestral accompaniment to indie singer-songwriter, to rock n roll impressionist to outright songwriting experimentalism with his latest, Sundays, during which he entered the studio with a producer and musician friend every Sunday to record a song he'd written that week, entirely in mono.   He's also quite the painter. Check out his site, AndrewCombsMusic.com, for a sample.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Stargazing: A Big D Puckcast | Defending Big D

Secondary scoring is hard to come by, the power play has dried up, but hey – the Dallas Stars can still lose by one point to any team in the league, no matter how good (or bad, for that matter). We've all seen this team have these problems before, so Wes and Mark catalogued a few of the things they hope to see more (and less) of in the coming weeks. In this episode: Is this a slump, or is this just...hockey? Should the Stars try to shut down 3-on-3 overtime so they can win in the shootout? Or is the answer to sucking less in OT simply to finish the job in regulation more often? And is any change at all too much for a team whose system is, by and large, working? How much do you fix with patience, and how much do you fix with change? Let's talk about all of this, and more...in Stargazing. It's brought to you by our sponsor, Greening Law, P.C. Want to talk about the 2023 NHL trade deadline? Leave a question or comment at Defending Big D, or DM us on the bird app @WesALawrence or @KETibbetts. You could be featured in our next episode. And please don't forget to rate, review and share. We love it. Really we do.

In this episode of the NCS Podcast we did a draft of all of the releases of Jeremy Smith ( Tuning/Dead Hearts/The Contol/Halfmast) . NT native Jeremy Smith has played on a ton of releases so Chris had the idea of doing a release draft for him. Jeremy came on as well and gave us some input on our picks. We had friend of the Pat Rhodes on to help and it was pretty fun. We will probably do this for other artists who have a ton of releases. It was cool going over his career and all the different themes and sounds that hes been a part of. Hope you enjoy this like we did! Interview with Jerry Castle

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Jerry Castle over Zoom video! Americana songwriter. Rock & roll guitarist. Dedicated cosmic country road warrior. Producer. After a slew of critically acclaimed independent albums and thousands of cross-country shows, Jerry Castle has carved out a career that's just as diverse and immediate as his musical influences, earning everything from chart-topping radio hits to critical acclaim from publications like Rolling Stone along the way. With his newest release, Midnight Testaments, Castle revisits and revitalizes his sound that helped launch his solo career. Raised in a rural Virginia town in the Appalachian Mountains, Jerry has always sung with a distinguishable southern twang, even when previous albums made room for pop hooks and synthesizers, too. Midnight Testaments maintains a unique approach, but it also finds Jerry leaning into the southern sounds of his homeland once again, matching the sharpest songwriting of his career with the swoon of pedal steel guitar, the stomp of country-rock, the steady strum of California Country, and plenty of roadhouse-worthy grooves. This is Castle's Americana homecoming — an album that finds him adding a new perspective to his brand of “Appalachian Soul” while also pushing ahead into new, unexplored territory.Jump-started by the boozy, bar-band bombast of "Tequila & Tears," Midnight Testaments showcases Jerry Castle at his best, matching his guitar skills with a deep, driving voice that's equally electric. Recorded at Trace Horse Studio in Nashville, these ten songs were all written during an inspiring period that found Castle falling in love, getting married, grappling with the loss of close friends, and making time during an otherwise busy life for some serious self-reflection. “The first song written for this album was “Pick Up Your Guitar.”  I had just received the news that a long time band-mate had passed away.  I was overwhelmed with emotion and trying to figure out how to process it.  I heard a voice that said “You know what to do, pick up your guitar,” so I did and I wrote the song in twenty minutes.  Obviously it was a cathartic process.”  Meanwhile, he continued earning kudos from publications like Rolling Stone, who praised his songs as "one of the most instantly catchy-and danceable-songs of the year," and American Songwriter, who described Midnight Testaments' predecessor, Brand New Hello, as "extraordinary — a beautiful record in ugly times."Castle doesn't look back very often. If he did, he might revisit the highlights that arrived before Midnight Testaments, like the five-week Number One radio hit "She Kills," which topped the Roots Music Folk Rock Chart in 2016, or the shows he's shared with fellow southern-fried genre-benders like Sturgill Simpson, Old Dominion, and Amanda Shires (who also makes a guest appearance on the album's final track, "Charades"). He might also think about his time living in Los Angeles, or the time he logged as a Music Row songwriter back in Nashville, or the long string of shows that have sharpened him into a charismatic, guitar-slinging front man. On his newest release, though, Castle has penned a collection of songs that takes stock of the present, such as the laid back anthemic ballad "Take the Lead", while the electrified twang and saloon-style piano chords of "Worried Man" pay tribute to the Bakersfield Sound, and the peppy pace of "Stars Align" owes more to Texas country than its Nashville cousin. Throughout the album, Castle looks far beyond his Tennessee home for inspiration, creating a signature sound that plants one foot in his native Appalachia while pointing the other foot toward broader influences.Midnight Testaments is music for the highway, the heartland, the happy, and the heartbroken. Midnight Testaments is music for all hours. We want to hear from you! Episode 110: Ideal Man, the fourth full-length album from Nashville songwriter Andrew Combs has been praised by major outlets including Rolling Stone Country. Is it a country album? Is Combs a country artist? Well he undoubtedly was when his first records emerged. His debut album Worried Man had steel guitar and a snapping rhythm section and songs that got right to the point about loss and love. With 2017's Canyons of My MInd, a swooning lush atmosphere wafts in, and Combs voice - always full of emotion and carefully wrought - stepped up a few levels. It's one of the more seductive and involving male voices in Americana, in the same zone as John Paul White and Combs friend Dylan LeBlanc. It marked real growth and refinement, and Ideal Man does too. Also in the hour, Music Row songwriting success Erin Enderlin leans harder than ever into her artist career with the moving and deeply country Faulkner County.

Punksploitation! Is it a thing? Lee says it is, because he'll be damned if he's going to manage to re-record a new show from scratch before the month is over. Lee spins some of his favourite cuts from film soundtracks that (mostly) in some way use punk rockers, punk music, or some sort of other punk aesthetic in the film. Who will arise victorious? You’ll never guess! MATTTuesday 12th June Up at 9am, yoghurt for breakfast. Set off around 10.30am:Wangmouth! Very fine beach, terrible looking pubs, and shops. Horse House Hotel turned out only served food to its patrons. Boo. Found a bakery, who produced a couple of crab sandwiches, grabbed local cider and Bad co. cans and headed to find a spot. Very few people around, mostly dog walkers and a few munty families with toddlers. After a tasty lunch, headed to the park. Swings at the business end. There was a small boy, must have been 4 or 5 with no-one to push him. Duly obliged, gently, provoking a fit of giggles. In between bursts of gravity’s lyric, I was being nagged by a slight uneasiness. Where was the parent and/or guardian, and is what I’m doing OK, as an adult man? My mind struggled to escape the hysterical labyrinth, which it wouldn’t have had the opportunity to get lost in had the boy and I been of a similar age.The uneasy feeling magnified, when a man made mostly of scalp jogged over and asked me, ‘WHAT ARE YOU DOING’ and pulled (what I hoped was) his son away.Despite my annoyance at the loud exclamation of something suspicious, I refrained from offering an antagonising quip. Such as ‘paedophiling’. That certainly wouldn’t have helped. Would it have been better for everyone if I’d not pushed the boy at all?Came back and made a light supper of squid rings, chilli bread, salad and Bombay mix. Stayed up listening to Takes a Worried Man and singing it loudly until the sky said to stop, around 11.30pm.CHARLIEI knew I would love this job.I remember the Moscow lecture halls and books.
