If you've listened to Roots Music Rambler much at all you know Frank and Falls are suckers for the new wave of retro-sounding Americana and Country artists. (See our previous episode with Kimmi Bitter.) When we first heard Logan Ledger, the same fascination kicked in.  With sounds reminiscent of Marty Robbins, Jim Croce and The Byrds, it was easy to see why this Bay Area product was reclaiming the title of purveyor of California Country in early album reviews. His debut record in 2020 was produced by T. Bone Burnett. His sophomore effort, “Golden State,” was produced by none other than Shooter Jennings. And it's magnificent.  Ledger joined Roots Music Rambler this week to talk about his albums, his sound and how a long-time Nashville singer-songwriter found his way into the professional musician space by finding and amplifying his own style.  Falls shares his thoughts on a weird Jim Morrison documentary and he and Frank offer up their normal pickin' the grinnin' picks for the week as well. What the Riff?!?
1978 - December: The Doobie Brothers “Minute By Minute”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 1, 2024 36:36

There are two distinct eras of music by The Doobie Brothers.  From their formation in 1970 until 1975, Tom Johnston was the lead vocalist, and the group had a mainstream rock sound, with some folk and “California Country” influences.  Starting in 1975, Michael McDonald joined the group as a keyboardist, as well as providing lead vocal work to help Johnston, who was having health problems at the time.  Over the following years, Johnston would have less influence as he neared retirement from the group in 1977.  Michael McDonald would influence the group into a more soulful sound, often called “blue eyed soul.”  Today we would call this “yacht rock.”Minute By Minute, the eighth studio album from the group, comes from the height of the McDonald era.  It is a high water mark for the Doobie Brothers both commercially and critically.  The album would spend 87 weeks on the Billboard 200 album charts in the U.S., topping the charts in five of those weeks.  It would also produce multiple nominations and wins at the Grammy awards in 1980 including Record and Song of the Year wins for “What a Fool Believes.”The Doobie Brothers would break up in 1982, then reform with Johnston back as front man in 1987.  Michael McDonald would rejoin the band full time in 2019 in time for their 50th anniversary tour. You can still find them on tour today.Rob brings us this soulful album for today's podcast. What A Fool BelievesThe lyrics of this hit narrate the story of a man who meets an old crush and tries to rekindle their relationship, only to find out that there never really was a relationship in the first place.  Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins wrote this single, which became a number 1 hit in the US and Canada.Dependin' On YouMichael McDonald and Patrick Simmons wrote this song, and Simmons takes over lead singer duties.  It went to number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The Latin-infused call-and-response song celebrates a rock solid love that is always there.Don't Stop to Watch the WheelsThis shuffle beat deeper cut is sung by Patrick Simmons, and was the B-side from the single release of “What a Fool Believes.” “Look out, hold on, don't stop to watch the wheels go 'round.  Look out, hold on, I got to cover ground.”Minute By MinuteThe title track finds Michael McDonald handling lead vocals, and was written by McDonald and Lester Abrams.  The single was released in April of 1979, and it went to number 14 on the US charts.  The smooth keyboard-driven sound reflects the  Motown inspiration, and is a hallmark song of the “yacht rock” genre. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Every Which Way But Loose by Eddie Rabbitt (from the motion picture “Every Which Way But Loose”)Clint Eastwood would take a break from his action and western movies for this comedy with an orangutan co-star named Clyde. STAFF PICKS:Don't Stop Me Now by Queen Bruce leads off this week's staff picks with a single from Queen's "Jazz" album.  While this tribute to hedonism did well in the UK, it only hit number 86 on the US charts.  It would grow in popularity over time, and would be featured in multiple commercials including Toyota, L'Oréal, and American Idol.Double Vision by ForeignerLynch features a song from Foreigner's second album of the same name.  It reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Surprisingly, the inspiration for the song title was an event at a hockey game when a goalie had to be removed after a collision on the ice because he was experiencing double vision.Homicide by 999 Wayne brings us a band from London that is named for the number used in the UK to reach emergency services.  This punk-infused song takes a tongue-in-cheek look at serial killers.  While a top 40 hit in the UK, it didn't chart in the States.  You might recognize this song from the soundtrack to the John Wick series, “The Continental.”Follow You Follow Me by Genesis Rob closes out the staff picks with a softer song from the progressive group Genesis, the closer from their album “...And Then There Were Three...”  The group had condensed to the three members of Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks, after former member Steve Hackett chose to leave.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Steamer Lane Breakdown by The Doobie BrothersWe get a little double dip of the Doobies as we exit today's podcast on this instrumental number.  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. The album's first single,  a cover of Johnny Horton's "Honky Tonk Man," was a clear message that this was a roots-influenced album, yet the energy and production made it also contemporary. Producer/Guitarist Pete Anderson took Dwight's tunes and added a modern take on the Bakersfield sound, that was the perfect nod to the past, but without becoming a pastiche of California Country styles of the 1960s.  Although Yoakam had 21 great original tunes in the bag, he and Pete agreed to mix 7 of the backlog of original tunes, along with 3 revved-up covers to fill out the album. In this week's episode we're featuring the music of one of The West Coast's most popular club draws in Missouri's Gene Davis. Davis tripped over to The Golden State in '53 and his go-getter attitude, tasty guitar licks and solid country vocal saw him hired almost immediately. Establishing himself and The Gene Davis Band (later The Star Routers) as one of the most in-demand acts on the booming LA & SoCal club scene, Davis appeared alongside the area's big names on TV shows, radio and of course on stage: in no uncertain terms helping to lay the groundwork for what is now known as The Bakersfield Sound. Somewhat of a trendsetter in more ways than one, Davis' time at the legendary Palomino Club and the dazzling list of names who passed through his employ over years is testament enough to the man's musical talent and his output (though not a national hitmaker) is worthy of this week's airtime.

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Jerry Castle over Zoom video! Americana songwriter. Rock & roll guitarist. Dedicated cosmic country road warrior. Producer. After a slew of critically acclaimed independent albums and thousands of cross-country shows, Jerry Castle has carved out a career that's just as diverse and immediate as his musical influences, earning everything from chart-topping radio hits to critical acclaim from publications like Rolling Stone along the way. With his newest release, Midnight Testaments, Castle revisits and revitalizes his sound that helped launch his solo career. Raised in a rural Virginia town in the Appalachian Mountains, Jerry has always sung with a distinguishable southern twang, even when previous albums made room for pop hooks and synthesizers, too. Midnight Testaments maintains a unique approach, but it also finds Jerry leaning into the southern sounds of his homeland once again, matching the sharpest songwriting of his career with the swoon of pedal steel guitar, the stomp of country-rock, the steady strum of California Country, and plenty of roadhouse-worthy grooves. This is Castle's Americana homecoming — an album that finds him adding a new perspective to his brand of “Appalachian Soul” while also pushing ahead into new, unexplored territory.Jump-started by the boozy, bar-band bombast of "Tequila & Tears," Midnight Testaments showcases Jerry Castle at his best, matching his guitar skills with a deep, driving voice that's equally electric. Recorded at Trace Horse Studio in Nashville, these ten songs were all written during an inspiring period that found Castle falling in love, getting married, grappling with the loss of close friends, and making time during an otherwise busy life for some serious self-reflection. “The first song written for this album was “Pick Up Your Guitar.”  I had just received the news that a long time band-mate had passed away.  I was overwhelmed with emotion and trying to figure out how to process it.  I heard a voice that said “You know what to do, pick up your guitar,” so I did and I wrote the song in twenty minutes.  Obviously it was a cathartic process.”  Meanwhile, he continued earning kudos from publications like Rolling Stone, who praised his songs as "one of the most instantly catchy-and danceable-songs of the year," and American Songwriter, who described Midnight Testaments' predecessor, Brand New Hello, as "extraordinary — a beautiful record in ugly times."Castle doesn't look back very often. If he did, he might revisit the highlights that arrived before Midnight Testaments, like the five-week Number One radio hit "She Kills," which topped the Roots Music Folk Rock Chart in 2016, or the shows he's shared with fellow southern-fried genre-benders like Sturgill Simpson, Old Dominion, and Amanda Shires (who also makes a guest appearance on the album's final track, "Charades"). He might also think about his time living in Los Angeles, or the time he logged as a Music Row songwriter back in Nashville, or the long string of shows that have sharpened him into a charismatic, guitar-slinging front man. On his newest release, though, Castle has penned a collection of songs that takes stock of the present, such as the laid back anthemic ballad "Take the Lead", while the electrified twang and saloon-style piano chords of "Worried Man" pay tribute to the Bakersfield Sound, and the peppy pace of "Stars Align" owes more to Texas country than its Nashville cousin. Throughout the album, Castle looks far beyond his Tennessee home for inspiration, creating a signature sound that plants one foot in his native Appalachia while pointing the other foot toward broader influences.Midnight Testaments is music for the highway, the heartland, the happy, and the heartbroken. Midnight Testaments is music for all hours. We want to hear from you! “It’s a song about taking the risk to do what you love,” Alice Wallace says of the soaring track, “The Blue,” which yields a lyric entitling her spellbinding new album. With Into the Blue, the California-country singer-songwriter conjures the atmospheric sound of the Golden State’s canyons and deserts, mountains and crashing waves, its crowning beauty and its tragic losses. At the same time, the supple-voiced Wallace tells her own and others’ stories, weaving tales that resonate as we grapple with so many disturbing national issues. Into the Blue is Wallace’s fourth album but marks her debut on the brand-new Rebelle Road label, an imprint founded by a trio of women dedicated to strengthening the California Country music community and expanding visibility for female artists in the Americana/roots genre. “They care so deeply about giving women a stronger voice in the music industry,” Wallace attests. Having spent the past six years writing songs and touring the nation – from AMERICANAFEST® to county fairs, barrooms to coffeehouses – Alice Wallace is ready to break out. “It takes bravery to ‘sail away into the blue’ and grab it,” she says. “It took me until about six years ago to finally take the plunge, quit my job and go for it. I haven’t looked back since.” It was after Wallace’s return to her birth state of California that she fully embraced her calling as a singer-songwriter. Her musical family had relocated to rural St. Cloud, Florida when she was a child. She grew up around the sounds of her parents playing guitars and singing, with “Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris, their favorite,” she recalls. She also absorbed the country-rock of ‘70s-era Linda Ronstadt on the turntable. “I really taught myself to sing by mimicking their styles,” she says. “The powerful belt that Linda has. The emotive lilt to Emmylou’s voice. Trying to navigate those different elements helped me find my own voice nestled in between all that.” She first picked up a guitar at age 10, with her dad teaching her to finger-pick at 15, and by senior year in high school, Wallace was performing original compositions at the local Borders bookstore. It was in college that she discovered yet another calling: yodeling, that haunting vocal style that blends blues, country, and western. Wallace’s own “A Little Yodel” added her to the ranks of legends Patsy Montana and Carolina Cotton. In 2008, when the Wallace family relocated back to Southern California, she joined them. There, she began focusing on writing, performing, and touring, both solo and with a band. Since 2013, she performs some 200 dates a year. One of those with whom she’s shared stages is singer-songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard, who says she and her “stunning” songcraft have that “Steve McQueen ‘Cincinnati Kid’ cool.” Pundits agree: she won the 2017 Female Vocalist of the Year at the California Country Awards and the previous year’s Best Country/Americana Artist at the L.A. Music Critic Awards. She was recently singled out by the Los Angeles Daily News and Pollstar for her “dead-on lovely version” of Ronstadt’s “throbbing” “Long Long Time” at the “Palomino Rides Again” event celebrating the legendary California honky-tonk. Into the Blue represents Wallace’s evolution as a recording artist, showcasing her growth as a songwriter as she embraces a fuller sound, backed by some of Americana’s most distinctive players. Co-produced by Steve Berns and Rebelle Road’s studio veteran, songwriter and musician KP Hawthorn (who’ve made a name for themselves working with artists in the West coast Americana scene), the album is brimming with soul. The formidable rhythm section, including drummer Jay Bellerose (Bonnie Raitt, Elton John, Aimee Mann) and bassist Jennifer Condos (Jackson Browne, Graham Nash), underpins instrumentation ranging from Tom Bremer’s crunchy electric guitar to Kaitlin Wolfberg’s lush string arrangements to keys and pedal steel from Jeremy Long (Sam Outlaw). Wallace uses an intoxicating array of vocal styles to bring her songs to life: a dusky alto on “The Lonely Talking” (co-written with KP Hawthorn); gospel-tinged belting on “When She Cries” (inspired by the end of a six-year drought in California), and a soaring soprano on “Santa Ana Winds.” The latter, a country-rock chronicle of California’s devastating wildfires, is a co-write with Dallas artist Andrew Delaney, a frequent collaborator whom she calls “the most brilliant lyricist I’ve ever met.” Wallace inhabits his stirring “Elephants,” giving voice to women who refuse to be “quiet as a mouse in a room full of elephants.” The Wallace-Delaney-penned “Echo Canyon” is, she says, “a southwestern cowboy ballad that’s a modern take on a yodel song.” Wallace’s heart-wrenching “Desert Rose” tells of a young mother’s struggle to give her baby a better life across the border. Lyrically, the heart of the album is the luminous anthem, “The Blue,” says Wallace. It describes her own journey to “get over my fears and go for the thing I love the most.” She knew that being a traveling troubadour and committing herself fully to music could be a dangerous choice. “In some ways, I wish I had done it sooner,” she says. “But I’m also glad I have the life experience to help fuel my songwriting and survive life on the road.” The highly charged emotional feel of “The Blue” derives in part from its exquisite layered harmonies – Wallace’s vocals joined by those of her father, mother, and brother. Known as “blood harmony,” when kinfolk sing together, it conveys a rapturous kind of purity and strength. That buoyancy radiates throughout Alice Wallace’s Into the Blue, lifting her listeners up, transporting them into the world of a seasoned troubadour looking back from a dream realized and dues paid without regret.

BRANDON STANSELL is a fresh face onto the Country Music scene, but has always been nearby; honing his craft and finding his voice. SLOW DOWN, co-written with Mylen and the title track off his new EP, is the epicenter of his “California Country” sound with the raw emotion of those first moments in a budding relationship. SLOW DOWN was produced by Nashville-based producer, writer, and guitarist Erik Halbig. Stansell met Erik a few years ago through friend, Ty Herndon, who is featured on the track. While his casual country sound is appealing, there is more that meets the eye with this crooner of Nashville roots. He is navigating the path of an openly-gay Country Artist. Brandon, while not the first to chart these waters, is one of few people in the industry willing to lay everything out for the listener and the result is an honest, beautiful musical experience. Director Trent Atkinson, once again, joined his team directing the SLOW DOWN music video and building on the cinematic scope their first collaborative work, DEAR JOHN, which was released in early 2016.   Visit his website:  www.brandonstansell.com Follow Brandon: https://www.instagram.com/brandonstansell/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNu-vvN73iWMhgLW7CE-anQ https://www.facebook.com/brandonstansellofficial/ https://twitter.com/brandonstansell  --------------   Sabel Samone-Loreca has engaged in HIV prevention and care work for much of her adult life.  Ms. Samone-Loreca is currently a Commissioner on the Los Angeles County Commission on HIV, holding the SPA 4 Consumer seat.   University of Florida Keynote Speaker TDOR 2016 Sabel Samone-Loreca was in the Profile of Cover Story for OUT Magazine October 2016 Sabel Samone-Loreca was on the Cover of the 2016 Lesbian,Gay,Bisexual, and Transgender Hertigage Month Sabel Samone-Loreca was Awarded 2015 Queen USA Most Popular Award Samone-Loreca  was on the Cover of The Fight Magazine Sponsor Los Angeles Pride 2015 ( Prep and Prejudice) Samone-Loreca is the cover of Friends Community research ( Alexia’s Project ) Healthy Living Positive Living Samone-Loreca started her career in social services in 2002, when she moved to Los Angeles. I arrived in Spokane Valley in 1975, at six weeks old. My large, loving, mixed-race family experienced its share of ups and downs and taught me the value of character, compassion, and community. My parents always worked for social justice, as youth leaders, social workers, public defenders, and activists, teaching their six children that we must use our gifts to help others. My first foray into politics came as a child, after my father was fired from his job simply because he was gay and my mother struggled to support the family as a single mother of six. My family experienced poverty, as well as discrimination based on race, gender, and sexual orientation. I helped my dad fight for a law to make discrimination against gay people illegal in the 1980’s. While that effort failed, neither I, nor my dad, would stop fighting for what’s right, because we knew it would happen one day. But I also experienced the incredible power of community support, and people looking out for me. I had the privilege of receiving scholarships to attend wonderful schools, such as Saint George’s School in Spokane. I recognized what an extraordinary opportunity this was and worked as hard as I could. I graduated in 1993 as valedictorian and was accepted into Yale University, where I earned a degree in clinical child psychology. Most importantly, I met my wife Amy on our second day on campus. We fell in love instantly, married just after graduation, and will soon celebrate our nineteenth anniversary. We have two amazing teenage sons, Alex and Aidan, both students at West Valley High School. My professional life has been devoted to public service. I began as a case manager, treatment provider, and mentor for juvenile offenders and kids in special education classrooms, and as a Court Appointed Special Advocate. I served adults with serious mental illness while working at Frontier Behavioral Health. I then went to Gonzaga Law School, as a Thomas More Scholar, so that I could learn the skills necessary to make a systemic difference. After graduating from GU law at the top of my class in 2006, I worked as an Assistant United States Attorney in Spokane and had the honor of representing the United States in a wide array of civil and criminal cases. I learned more about what government can do and found solutions to large challenges. I moved to private practice in 2012, and have zealously and successfully advocated for consumers victimized by corrupt businesses, people trapped in jails and mental hospitals, and workers who have faced discrimination. I have helped hundreds of people recover millions of dollars, and have stopped numerous illegal practices. Through it all, I remain a determined optimist. Looking at how much progress we have already made, there is no reason that we can’t overcome today’s challenges. I thank you for caring about this community, and would be honored to work for you as your county commissioner. LAUNCHES NEW #CHANGETHEGAME CAMPAIGN, CHALLENGING PRECONCEIVED NOTIONS OF WHAT IT MEANS TO BE GAY September 13, 2016 – NEW YORK: Jack’d, a leading gay social app, is continuing its #ChangeTheGame initiative with an eight-week campaign aimed at challenging preconceived notions of what it means to be gay. Each week, the campaign focuses on a new topic of special relevance to the community of gay men that use Jack’d. Topics include the dangers of labels among gay men, measuring self esteem, and the importance of activism. The hope is by encouraging its members to openly discuss these issues and how they impact their daily lives, Jack’d will empower them to make more meaningful connections with others who share their views. The first week’s topic focuses on kindness. “Gay men often have this stigma that we are bitchy and unkind to one another other, especially on the apps,” says Russell Horsey, a Marketing and Social Media Specialist at Jack’d. “We’re asking Jack’d members to share the encounters they’ve had with people on apps, or explain why they were driven to be act a certain way to someone else. We’d also like them to discuss the value that they believe our community places on kindness.” Kindness is something most parents try to instill in their children at an early age. The Dalai Lama even says kindness is his religion. We all know – or, at least, have been told – that when we focus on kindness, our world becomes kinder and we become kinder. Kindness broadens our perspective. It breeds tolerance and understanding. It softens our heart, brightens our lives, and makes people want to be around us. So why does it seem to be lacking in the gay community – especially on the hook-up apps? Jack’d’s eight-week #ChangeTheGame campaign launched, September 14. Her favorite type of music growing up surprisingly was Spice Girls, and Boy Bands. Nothing too different. She began listening to different types of music by the time she hit her teenage years experiencing, indie, experimental, and, garage. She later on started dabbling with instruments like her electric guitar, and electric piano, she still has her guitar to this very day. She was in several different amateur bands but never performed for anyone before, until she performed once in a volunteer after school program. She soon fell in love with music. Later on as time progressed, and music progressed she began to test the limits of electronic keyboard computer music, and Electro dubstep beats, where she was then to take on the name as the Electronic Pop Queen. – IMDb Mini Biography By: Dia Decayo Dia First Started Her YouTube Channel In June 24, 2015 under the screen name GloomyMoonChild.
