1968 film directed by Mario Bava

Black Sunday (1960), Blood and Black Lace (1964), and A Bay of Blood (1971) There are films by certain directors that are truly iconic—classics of the genre we sometimes assume everyone has already seen. But it's easy to forget that, right now, there are fans just beginning their journey into horror. Whether due to age or a newfound curiosity, they're taking their first steps into the genre. For those unfamiliar with him, we'd like to introduce one of horror's true maestros: Mario Bava. And for those already acquainted with his work, maybe it's time for a revisit—to once again be stunned by what he brings to the screen. If it's been a few years, you may find yourself seeing things in a whole new way. That's one of the beautiful things about cinema. The three films we've chosen highlight important parts of Bava's career and show how his work helped shape entire subgenres—from gothic horror to giallo to the slasher film. Whether you're discovering him for the first time or coming back for a fresh look, these films are a perfect place to begin. One quick correction: Edgar Wallace was a British writer, not American. Films mentioned in this episode: Baron Blood (1972), A Bay of Blood (1971), Black Sabbath (1963), Black Sunday (1960), Blood and Black Lace (1964), Caltiki the Immortal Monster (1959), The Church (1989), Creature with the Blue Hand (1967), Curse of the Crying Woman (1963), Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Danger: Diabolik (1968), The Day the Sky Exploded (1958), Death Walks at Midnight (1972), Death Walks in High Heels (1971), Deep Red (1975), The Demon (1982), Demons (1985), Django Kill…If You Live, Shoot! (1967), Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs (1966), Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1932), Erik the Conqueror (1961), Eyeball (1975), The Four of the Apocalypse (1975), Frankenstein '80 (1972), Frankenstein Island (1981), Friday the 13th (1980), Friday the 13th (1981), The Giant of Marathon (1959), The Girl Who Knew Too Much (1963), The Great Silence (1968), Hatchet for a Honeymoon (1970), Hercules in the Haunted World (1961), Horror of Dracula (1958), Inferno (1980), I Vampiri (1957), Knives of the Avenger (1966), Long Hair of Death (1964), Night Child (1975), Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), Planet of the Vampires (1965), Psycho (1960), She (1965), Shock (1977), Suspiria (1977), Thunderball (1965), The Toolbox Murders (1978), Torso (1973), The Whip and the Body (1963), Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (1972)

Holy live pod episode, Batman! Kurtis from Skating Polly emerges from the Batcave to defend the loathed 1997 Joel Schumacher superhero blockbuster Batman & Robin. In this condensed episode recorded in front of an actual audience at Treefort Fest, we dive into the film's pricey production design, Batsuits with nipples, how many ice puns a human can tolerate, sexy gorilla suit stripping, Arnold Schwarzenegger being extremely over-the-top, Danger: Diabolik, Uma Thurman being a sweet little eco-terrorist, X Games influence, Robin's general unlikability, the glut of fundraisers in Gotham, and an attempt to bribe the crowd with donuts. (Bonus: Count how many times I say "umm" and "uhh" because I'm nervous in front of a crowd and know I can't edit out my flubs!)
In which we discover that crime actually does pay, and pay quite well. Starring a Gentleman Thief with Dreamy Grey Eyes, a Buxom Blonde Assistant, and a Disheveled Always One Step Behind Police Inspector, we travel to Italy for a very good Mario Bava Comic Book Movie, in the Diabolik Cinematic Universe. Bonus points for multiple Jaguars (car, not the cat), multiple make-out sessions, and literally rolling around in money while totally, totally doing it. Read This Episode's Notes! It feels like a million years since this podcast was about “Mystery Science Theater 3000” but it once was. I know, it's hard to believe, because it's so goddamn memorable now. Anyway, for the discussion of “Danger: Diabolik”, the original series finale, we cut an extensive Detour into Austin Powers, the international man of mystery. But the excised stuff didn't hit the cutting room floor because it was too melancholy or profound. It was too shagadelic! It was too switched on. It made us too horny, baby!Thrill as we gush about the inaugural 1997 installment then quickly lose patience with recycled gags and halfhearted performances, eventually erupting in outright hostility over the superfluous 6-minute (!!) cold open to "Goldmember".It's time for some rage podcasting again (and some love too), so join your wonky yet affable host! For every single episode at least a week early and great WEEKLY bonus episodes, become a Patreon subscriber. Adapted from the French comics series by Jean-Claude Forest and produced by Italian film kingpin Dino De Laurentiis, Barbarella shared cast and crew with Danger: Diabolik and went through a slew of writers (including Terry Southern) before reaching its final form. It's odd to remember that Jane Fonda was far from the first choice for the starring role when one considers how strongly the part looms over her public persona, but even a cursory glance at her vivid, dizzying, salacious, and humorous performance will provide ample evidence as to how Barbarella became an enduring camp classic. Ryan is joined by Sylvan and Cheryl for a thorough examination of this cheesy, sexy, loopy, and unique time capsule of a very specific era in pop culture history. Discussion topics for Barbarella include the nature of consent, Jane Fonda's complex relationship with socio-political issues, how Barbarella reflects attitudes apparent in second wave feminism, Barbarella's thorny interpretation through the lens of sex positivity, and how a modern version of Barbarella might play out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ryan-valentine3/support

All good things… The History and Legacy of “Mystery Science Theater 3000”, Chapter 13: Sunset on the Satellite. It's hard saying goodbye. But today, we must do just that and bid farewell to MST3K and this era of the podcast. We discuss the bittersweet series finale and why conclusions are as necessary as they are tearful. The Satellite of Love comes crashing back to Earth, our Mads are scattered to the four corners of the Earth, Gypsy becomes a corporate tycoon, and, most importantly, the central trio of Mike, Crow, and Servo live happily ever after.Oh, apparently there was a movie riffed, the splendid and colorful fumetti adaptation “Danger Diabolik”, which may be the best thing ever lampooned on the show. It has an Ennio Morricone (RIP) score and everything!Let's join hands, toast 11 years of amazing television and look toward a bright future, no tears streaming down our faces. Okay, maybe a few tears. A lot. I'm already crying.(And don't worry. Just because this phase of the podcast is over, your wonky yet affable host has MUCH more to share with you.) The new scenes complete the electrifying depiction of an oppressive Union officer who leads a squad of Rebel prisoners, ex-slaves, and criminals into Mexico to hunt down a band of murdering Apaches which raises the question: who represents a greater threat? *Danger Diabolik (1968)* The suave, psychedelic-era thief called Diabolik (Law) can't get enough of life's good – or glittery – things. Not when there are currency shipments to steal from under the noses of snooty government officials and priceless jewels to lift from the boudoirs of the superrich. The elusive scoundrel finds plenty of ways to live up to his name in this tongue-in-cheek, live-action caper inspired by Europe's popular Diabolic comics. He clambers up walls, zaps a press conference with Exhilaration Gas, smacks a confession out of a crime lord while freefalling with him from an airplane, and pulls off the heist of a twenty-ton gold ingot. Danger Diabolik is a 60's psychedelic snapshot from horror maestro Mario Bava. *The Day of the Locust (1975)* One of the grimmest assessments of Hollywood life during the '30s, this 1975 drama is adapted from a novel by Nathanael West and tells the tale of a talentless beauty's desperate struggle to become a star. A deeply insightful work that is powerful in its presentation, staggering in its vision. Director John Schlesinger is masterful in creating a world of platinum blondes, cockfights, glamour and broken dreams. And throughout, he plays on the edge of sexual and physical danger which finally erupts in the shocking climax. Oscar nominations went to Burgess Meredith and cinematographer Conrad Hall. *Hard Eight (1997)* Before his commercial breakthrough with Boogie Nights (1997), writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson made this low-key drama. John (John C. Reilly), a half-bright loser stranded in Reno, is down to his last few bucks when Sydney (Phillip Baker Hall), taking pity on him, buys him breakfast and offers him a few tips on making money in the casinos. Two years later, John has become Sydney's partner. Still, his lack of common sense goes from problematic to dangerous when he falls in love with Clementine (Gwyneth Paltrow), a cocktail waitress who isn't above turning a few tricks when she needs to make money — and isn't any brighter than John. *The Winslow Boy (1999)* David Mamet's brilliant adaptation of THE WINSLOW BOY is a rich and complex telling of the British classic brought to life by a superior ensemble of talent. The story follows the lives of the Winslows, a banker's family living in turn-of-the-century London, as they fight to prove the innocence of their youngest son accused of theft. *The Bob Hope Collection (1939 – 1940)* The legendary Bob Hope is at his very best in these two hilarious comedy thrillers, The Cat and the Canary & the Ghost Breakers. An equal mix of both frights and fun, these two unforgettable classic films showcase one of the most popular entertainers of all time and have become blueprints for the horror-comedy genre! *Essential Film Noir Collection 1 (1947 – 1957)* This collection includes four acclaimed film noir classics including Framed (1947), Alias Nick Beal (1949), Detective Story (1951) and The Garment Jungle (1957). Join Hollywood's legendary tough guys and femme fatale film noir icons such as Glen Ford, William Bendix, Audrey Totter, Ray Milland & Eleanor Parker. This set also includes bonus material including feature audio commentaries from Hollywood's top film noir historians including Eddie Muller & Alan Rode. *Jonathan Livingston Seagull (1973)* Jonathan Livingston Seagull is a visionary cinematic achievement of stunning beauty. Based on Richard Bach's bestselling novel, this timeless tale will open your heart to wonder and dare you to dream. Jonathan shows an intense and extraordinary passion for flight, learning everything he possibly can about flying. But his lofty goal–and an unwillingness to conform – results in his expulsion from his flock. Undeterred, he continues to soar onward in his quest–one that heads him to envision another world–one of love, understanding, achievement, hope and individuality. This film features music by the legendary Neil Diamond. The October Bundle Pack contains pre-order titles and will be dispatched in the week leading up to its October 28h release date.
