In this episode, I give a review of the Zane Carney concert I saw in San Francisco, CA on January 30th. Then, I give a review of the Foster the People concert in Oakland, CA on January 31st. I also give tips on how to cope with loneliness.

A Hammond Organ spotlight opens the show, courtesy of the WRD Trio, the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio and the James Taylor Quartet. Its groove then gives way to the contemporary sounds of Mark Lettieri and Taylor Eigsti's latest collaboration with Gretchen Parlato and Becca Stevens, the spledid new albums of Israeli pianist Maya Dunietz and bassist Almog Sharvit; the jazz forays of the Stooges' Iggy Pop (with Dr. Lonnie Smith) and Mike Watt (with Three Layer Cake; the return of trumpet maverick Jaimie Branch with a live album, and two adventurous Italian projects, Circles 44 and Koine Sound Collective; and a second taste from the impressive debut album by guitarist Zane Carney. See how the jazz-minded guitarist and ace sideman twisted his bastardized Tele with a flush board of analog gems and freaky filth for his latest album, Alter Ego.
We take off with another upcoming gem from Georgia Anne Muldrow and land with John Zorn and the first (of what will certainly be many) box set dedicated to his delightful Bagatelles. In the middle a mini-section on the Palladino bass-dinasty which acts as a bridge between two of the hot scenes of today, London's and LA's. From there we dive in the latter with a special focus on the fascinating new releases by Sam Gendel, Carlos Niño, Zane Carney, Henry Solomon and Logan Kane. The playlist features Georgia Anne Muldrow; H ZETTRIO; Dzhian & Kamien; Tom Misch, Yussef Dayes, Rocco Palladino; Pino Palladino, Blake Mills; Sam Gendel; Carlos Niño; Zane Carney; Henry Solomon, Logan Kane; JOMORO; R+R=NOW; Sana Nagano; John Zorn, Mary Halvorson, Erik Friedlander, Michael Nicolas, Trigger, and Ikue Mori. Zane has worked with artists such as John Mayer, Avril LaVigne, Broadway’s Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark and many others.I first discovered him when he was touring with John Mayer a while back and he is a fantastic guitarist and musician.Zane has a new record coming out called Alter Ego in April, so be on the lookout for that.In this interview, we spoke about:• How they recorded his new record, Alter Ego, and improvising parts on the spot• Being self-sustained as a solo artist• Rejecting traditional structures of what a hit song should be• Running his own business vs being signed• Always staying curious and how that leads to success• How Zane set and achieves goals• Music theory• Zane’s Twitch StreamAnd much, much moreConnect With Zane Carney On:Website:https://www.zanecarney.comInstagram:https://www.instagram.com/zanecarney/Twitch:https://www.twitch.tv/zanecarneyFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/zanecarneyofficial

I don't even know where to begin. Zane Carney is a brilliant guitarist, singer/songwriter, actor, tech wiz, gamer... and his mind! Dare I say, genius? I do. A seeker, he's always asking questions, and he actually listens to the answers. Zane puts the knowledge into action, sans ego, bettering himself, and all in his wake, at every turn. I'm blown away. Literally, mind, heart, and spirit, blown! I knew his music, and I've had enough dealings with him to know how personable, enthusiastic, demonstrative, kind, thoughtful, and lovely he is. Put all that together and the time spent in his good company was like a warm, sweet, cleansing bath, which for two hours washed away and healed six months of pandemic virus. We talked Zane's tenure as a seven-year-old to start, co-star on Dave's World with Harry Anderson, his crazy talented family, picking up a guitar at ten to catch his quickly rising, two years older brother, Reeve, getting good enough, fast enough, to be out touring with major artists while still a teen. The GRAMMY® nominated guitarist, co-founded CARNEY, who slew LA with sold-out residencies, was chosen to play Bono and The Edge's music in Broadway's Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, was hand-picked by John Mayer to join his band, which was a game-changer moving forward, giving him the cred and visibility which he continues to parlay in his solo career which soars, in spite of having had a vocal chord defect, and a years-long debilitating fatigue disorder. The youngin is indefatigable, unstoppable, forever learning, growing, and reinventing. Just days before the world as we knew it shut down, Zane reconnected to acting and was scheduled to star in an LA production of Hair. Corona don't scare and won't stop him. Zane's created a thriving and ever-growing pandemic proof platform for his passions: music, gaming... connecting, another of his magnificent gifts. Zane makes whomever he's addressing the most important person in the world at that moment. Having been on the receiving end of that for these two hours, it's pretty heady stuff. And, he played. His ass off! Originals, I Want to Have Faith Again, and I Love You, at my request, had virtual lighters igniting all over the interweb... as did a cover, requested by our friend, Snuffy Walden. I'll leave that as a closing surprise. Zane Carney is in heavy rotation in my kitchen, and now in my head and heart. I'll be keeping him close... you can too. He streams Live, nightly. Lucky us. For all things Zane https://www.zanecarney.com Apologies for my tech woes... working on it. My queendom for a crew, and a blue president. Tune in to hear a fun impromptu performance at the end of this episode!
Josh caught up with Zane a few months back while at the LA Amp Show. Zane is a "guitarist, singer, and songwriter, most known for his work with John Mayer, CARNEY, and Broadway's "Spider Man -Turn Off The Dark."' He spills the beans about how he got into the industry and how he continues pursuing music through sickness.
Zane talks about performing with John Mayer, performing on 'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" on Broadway, and we sing 'Here Comes the Sun' together at the end!
Encore presentation of installment 10/21/2014 Zane Carney currently plays lead guitar for Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark on Broadway with Los Angeles based Interscope Recording act CARNEY. Born and half-raised in NYC, Zane moved to Los Angeles as a child and developed an affinity for the guitar in Junior High when he started performing at local blues clubs. After attending Hamilton High School Academy of Music and touring Japan with the Monterey National All-Star Big Band, he began his collegiate studies at University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music majoring in Studio/Jazz Guitar. As a Guitarist and former Oboist, many of his schooling years included performances with Symphony Orchestras and Chamber Groups which lead to an educational background that is equally classical and jazz. This diversity of musical styles and methods helped to form a unique sound that draws just as much from Jazz as it does Delta Blues, Rock and Roll and Impressionism. Zane has been fortunate to tour the world (Jesse McCartney, Renee Olstead, Armand Sabal-Lecco, etc.), perform regularly on national television (Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel, Good Morning America, etc.), and play lead guitar as an onstage musician at Last Call with Carson Daly and CW's Oh Sit. On top of this, he has performed with a diverse group of jazz artists including John Daversa whose Big Band album "Junk Wagon" and Small Group record "Artful Joy" feature Zane's jazz playing. Outside of session and touring work, Zane is fortunate to have two strong outlets as an artist. One is though his band CARNEY which he shares with brother/lead singer Reeve Carney who is currently playing the title role of Peter Parker in Broadway's Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark. CARNEY has toured the US, Canada and Australia opening for U2, Fergie, The Veronicas, The Black Crowes and Gov't Mule while also playing guitar for John Mayer on the road. The other is as a singer/songwriter creating, recording and performing his own material. In his spare time, Zane teaches music theory and guitar masterclasses at universities in LA and NY. zanecarney.com facebook.com/zanecarneyofficial @zanecarney (Twitter & Instagram)
