In light of D'Angelo's passing, we're replaying our episode on Voodoo from June 2025. This Grammy-winning, genre-defying album changed the sound of R&B, soul, and hip-hop forever. And it has seriously influenced the playing of so many musicians, including our own Adam Maness. From Questlove's behind-the-beat drumming to Roy Hargrove's horn arrangements, Voodoo is packed with the kind of deep musicality that jazz musicians truly connect with.Twenty-five years later, Voodoo still hits harder than many albums of its generation. We've heard from so many of you in the comments on Spotify and YouTube about what this album, and D'Angelo's music, means to you. What happens when you pair a great guitar player with a badass bassist? You get mind-bending sounds from gifted producer and multi-instrumentalist Blake Mills — known for his work with Alabama Shakes and Bob Dylan — and Grammy-winner Pino Palladino who has reshaped how we hear the bass. See: Palladino’s collaborations with everyone from Erykah Badu to Nine Inch Nails. “Taka” is hard to pin down, but easy to take in. And you can take it in IRL, because Pino Palladino & Blake Mills are hitting The Ford on Friday, Sept. 26.

From the shapeshifting subleties of his spiritual practices in sound, tonal texture, and electrifying emotion, to the carefully cinematic essence of his eager expressions behind the scenes, there isn't much the West Coast-based, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer Blake Mills can't do. He's come a long ways since his classic 2010 debut "Broken Mirrors," while simultaneously capturing the critical chemistry of some of your favorite artists in between his sonic shifts and radical responsibilities in the studio. On this episode of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast, we sit down with Mills for a long-awaited chat to discuss his most recent effort with legendary bassist and all-around master of melody, Pino Palladino, "That Wasn't A Dream." A breathtaking entry into the fundamentals of fusion, ritualistic rhthms, and lucid language between two incredible artists, Mills take us on a journey through his unique process, atmospheric approach, and tonal theories, while we kick back and marvel at the totality of his techniques, amighty attention to detail, and much more.

Ever wanted to sound just like your bass heroes? We all have those iconic players who shaped the way we hear and play bass. For me, it started with revisiting Voodoo by D'Angelo and getting lost in Pino Palladino's buttery tone. That led me down the rabbit hole of dialing in his sound—and others—using the HX Stomp. The result? A custom collection of 5 HX Stomp presets inspired by five of the greatest to ever do it: Marcus Miller, Pino Palladino, Tim Lefebvre, John Patitucci, and Victor Wooten. These players have shaped entire genres—and my own musical path—with tones that are instantly recognizable yet always evolving. Rather than chase every tone they've ever played, I zeroed in on some of their most iconic recorded moments. These presets are my best attempt to capture those sounds—the ones that made me stop and rewind.Check out all the HX Presets I have in the store, including this new collection of Bass Legends. They're designed as a starting point for your curiosity, and I highly recommend diving deeper into each artist's discography to better understand their origin story. As the years unfold, the fascinating part for me is where they've all ended up on the journey. With John Patitucci you might be a huge fan of the 80's/90's Ken Smith/Yamaha records, but haven't explored the recent albums with the hollow body instruments. Marcus Miller might mean SLAP to you, but perhaps you missed his incredibly melodic finger style playing on fretless on records like Tales and Marcus. Wherever you're at in your listening and discovery, just remember that curiosity is key, and these sounds could open up a whole new world of music. We're finally digging into “Voodoo” - D'Angelo's Grammy-winning album that changed the sound of R&B, soul, and hip-hop forever. And the album a young Adam Maness had on repeat, seriously influencing his playing as well as countless musicians since. With Questlove's “Dilla-drag” drumming, Pino Palladino's funky bass lines, Roy Hargrove's jazzy horn arrangements, and Charlie Hunter's chicken-picking guitar, Voodoo is packed with the kind of cross-genre musicality that makes jazz musicians lose their minds.Twenty-five years later, Voodoo still grooves harder, hits deeper, and sounds more human than many albums of its generation. In this episode, you'll hear:What makes D'Angelo's groove so unique (and hard to imitate)Isolated tracks, rare demos, and interviews with the artistsHow “Spanish Joint” came together in a single takeWhether “Feel Like Makin' Love” tops the Roberta Flack originalAnd whether “Voodoo” is even an R&B album at allABOUT OPEN STUDIO------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------As the premier online jazz education platform, with an ever-expanding course library and 20,000+ members, Open Studio (OS) has everything you need to excel and thrive on your jazz journey.Featuring everything from beginner to advanced lessons, engaging courses from A-list instructors, step-by-step curriculum, real-time classes and a thriving and incredibly supportive community, OS is the perfect platform to level up your jazz playing, whether you're a total beginner, or an advanced pro-level improvisor.
Ever look back and cringe at your early bass choices? Scott and Ian swap stories about the mistakes they made chasing speed and flash — including the time they dismissed players like Pino Palladino, Michael League, and Jonathan Maron as “boring.” They break down how your ear (and your priorities) change over time — and why it matters.

B. Cox returns with a look back at Common's landmark fourth album, Like Water For Chocolate as it turns 25.After his breakthrough sophomore album 1994's Resurrection and his acclaimed third album 1997's One Day It'll All Make Sense, the Chicago emcee picked up his roots and moved to New York City and linked up with Questlove, The Roots and other creatives who were working within the Electric Lady Studios. There he collaborated with the aforementioned, D'Angelo, super producer DJ Premier, musicians such as keyboardist James Poyser, famed bass player Pino Palladino and horn legend Roy Hargrove among others. The catalyst for this collaboration, however, came from producer Jay Dee (bka J Dilla) who produced the lion's share of the album's tracks. The album was widely acclaimed up on release. This celebrated British jazz pianist, songwriter and record producer was labelled a veteran by critics at age 19 and over the following decade won most of the major jazz music awards. Born in Surrey and raised in Wandsworth London, he was classically trained and attended the Guildhall School of Music . Emerging in the late 80s as a jazz pianist and influenced by Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner, he recorded three solo albums in his early 20s and his debut album A Clearer View in 1990 was produced by his dream choice of Wayne Shorter. This led to him appearing on the cover of The Wire magazine. He additionally worked with Jean Toussaint, Tommy Smith, and Branford Marsalis In the late 90's Sting invited him to join his band following the death of Kenny Kirkland which saw him tour with Sting for the next six years and recording three albums. He then became a member of Jeff Beck's band, touring for six years and recording a further three albums. During these years he also worked with Chaka Khan, Des'ree, Mica Paris, Carleen Anderson, Manu Katché, Phil Collins, and Peter Gabriel In 2013 after twelve years of touring as a session musician he reestablished himself as a solo artist and soon after, released the album Anything But Look on Lyte Records featuring Will Downing, Omar, Joy Rose, Jacob Collier, Tim Garland and Pino Palladino. He teaches music at Guildhall School of Music and Bath Spa University and additionally composes music for the London-based production music library, Audio Network.
Bassist Neil Stubenhaus was a key member of that pool of exceptional talent in LA in the 70s and 80s that were first calls to play on the great albums made during the era. Neil stood shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Nathan East, Lee Sklar and Pino Palladino (among many) to make good music even better. Included on his resume are people like Billy Joel, Lionel Richie, Al Jarreau, Anita Baker, Rod Stewart, Barbra Steisand, the Temptations and tons of others. In fact, we both had nothing else going on so we talked for 3 hours about these and dozens of others. For the last couple decades he's mainly lent his talents to movie soundtracks which is an entirely separate conversation. Strap in and enjoy a masterclass in being good at your instrument. After Pink Floyd delivered The Final Cut, the 1983 album which would be Roger Waters last with the band, David Gilmour found himself at an impasse. While he had some music ready for a new album as Roger had domineered the writing in Pink Floyd for the last 5+ years, he was unsure of the band's future. And since Roger was working on a solo concept album (The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking) David decided it was time he find out if he could make it outside of Pink Floyd. So he enlisted some heavy hitters like Bob Ezrin (producer), Jeff Pocaro (drums), Pino Palladino (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards), Steve Winwood (keyboards), and Pete Townshend (lyrics) to help him create a solo album for 1984. The result was About Face with some statements on the death of John Lennon (Murder), the US putting missiles in the UK (Cruise) and his relationship with Roger (You Know I'm Right) which would continue to be a source of lyrics for the next two Roger-less Pink Floyd albums - A Momentary Lapse of Reason (reviewed on UAWIL #69) and The Division Bell (UAWIL #168). We're not sure if David was truly looking to break away from the band and become a big solo act or just had pent up anger and music that had to get out. The tour to support the album was more successful than the album itself and it may not be our favorite but there are some bright spots and some riffs that would foreshadow things to come in Pink Floyd. Dave Swift, Bass Man with the Jools Holland Big Band In 1991 Dave Swift heard that Jools Holland, ex-Squeeze keyboardist and TV presenter, was searching for a bassist who played both double bass and bass guitar. With the renowned bassist Pino Palladino then holding the “bass chair” in Holland's band, this was a bold move on the young bassist's part. The advantage from Swift's position was that he also played double bass and was already skilled in sight-reading. Swift auditioned, was hired on the spot, and has been Holland's bassist ever since. Thanks to his talent and growing popularity, Swift is often invited at shows and camps. Recently, Swift was invited to appear at the annual Warwick Bass Camp in Germany in 2016 as a VIP guest, along with numerous popular bass luminaries from all over the world. The 2016 Warwick Bass Camp was held in Markeneukirchen, Germany, and had a roster of outstanding bassists. Attending professors included Alphonso Johnson, Felix Pastorius, Anthony Wellington and Steve Bailey. Swift was also a guest lecturer at the March 2016 Bass Guitar Show at Earls Court Olympia that filled the room to capacity. Dave Swift is still an in-demand session musician outside of Holland's band and has also played double bass for American soul singer Gary U.S. Bonds, Ben E. King and on ex-Kinks frontman Ray Davies's album, Other People's Lives. One of my favorite new indie albums of 2021 is An Overview on Phenomenal Nature by Cassandra Jenkins. It's a mostly fairly quiet, folky album. Except for the last cut which is instrumental with a kind of jazzy/ambient vibe. I knew immediately that I wanted to use it in a Sunday morning mix. Then I realized that it had been more than a year since I'd done a Sunday mix. So here it is - Sunday Morning Music Vol. 21 - Dreamland. It sounds just like the Cassandra Jenkins I described above - jazzy/ambient with a sunny feel. There are two vocal tunes - one by Sam Gendel and the wonderful Dreamland by Joni Mitchell. There's not much else to say other than grab the Sunday paper, a cup of coffee and hang out with this mix. Cheers!
