Whilst sifting through old drives for B-Roll for another video I found this old overhead shot of me working on a Till Brönner transcription from a few years back. Obviously I don't set up the camera and makes videos like this every time I transcribe something, but I do make a habit of transcribing on a regular basis. As my ear gets stronger, the material I'm transcribing tends to change. It's quite rare these days to be transcribing linear ideas for instance as I've done so much of that over the past three decades. I'm more curious now about harmony and chord voicings, and how those might work for orchestration and arrangement purposes when I'm in writing-mode. As you can hear from this very raw voice note made with my phone, I'm focusing on harmonic development for this new album I'm planning to record in Europe later in the year. I'm working towards recording the trio (possibly Jojo Mayer and Tom Cawley) in the south of Germany, and then hopping over to Sofia to record the New Bulgarian Voices on top of the trio right after. Layering elements of Jazz, European folk music, electronic music, and some of my biggest influences from the classical world like Chopin, Brahms, Messiaen, Mahler, Schubert, Ravel and Rachmaninoff, is something incredibly exciting to me. Knowing I have access to some of the greatest musicians, engineers, and studios out there gives me a lot of hope that no matter what we do in the studio, we will make music we love. And when you add in the possibilities a choir could generate… I start to get a real buzz about the project even when we're so many months away. This is a clip from my daily practice routine that I'm constantly documenting to make sure ideas aren't lost. The one recurring melody throughout this improvised clip could end up being the main theme for a choral arrangement for instance. You just never know. That's why I felt compelled to share these three things today. * The transcription clip represents where I'm coming from and the crazy amount of hours I've put into transcription and ear training over the years. * The audio clip gives you an idea of how I'm constantly making short voice notes of compositional ideas. * And the video clip is looking forward to this year's recording projects as I continue to write as much as possible every day, and get used to a new instrument so I'm in the best place possible when the red light goes on to record. As always, be sure to stream the latest album with Mark Turner, John Ellis, Gretchen Parlato, Jojo Mayer, Elliot Mason, Gregoire Maret, and Tim Miller for free wherever you listen to music. My listening platform of choice happens to be Spotify. If you're a fan of physical media, you can now pre-order vinyl of this latest releaseMore soon, Janek Get full access to Janek's Newsletter at janekgwizdala.substack.com/subscribe

Influenced by jazz and Joni Mitchell, Beacon singer releases debut EP At a certain juncture, songwriter and singer Rose Stoller knew she had to confront what was becoming a looming stumbling block: learning to play the guitar. Though she was crafting songs, she lacked the ability to perform them for others. "Many people took guitar lessons when they were 7 years old, or even 14, while here I was trying to learn guitar, write songs and jump-start performing them," says the Beacon resident. "I wanted to share the songs but I was still learning how to play the instrument and holding the guitar awkwardly. "Ambition made it stressful, but I think you have to go through this learning curve, whether you're an artist, a knitter, anything," she says. "The only way to get past it is to go through it. I do feel I'm on the other side, but that doesn't mean the growth is over." It seems to be working. Stoller recently released her debut EP, Rose Stoller: Live at Guava, a Pawling music studio. It features five acoustic tracks, including those inspired by Brazilian popular music, "Laurel Canyon folk rock," rhythm and blues and contemporary jazz. All showcase Stoller's creative phrasing and inflections - her Instagram handle, chosen a while back, she notes, unsure that it still reflects her music, is @WeirdSoundGirl. The EP is accompanied by videos of live performances of each song. "I don't think I sound very conventional and I was playing on that when I chose that name," she explains. "The sounds I make are super-organic and always changing. I open my mouth and see what happens, and there's something fun about that." Stoller, 26, grew up in New York City, in a household where her father wrote songs as a hobby. "My dad is an undiscovered talent and his songwriting was a big inspiration to me, though I didn't participate in it growing up - I was shy," Stoller recalls. "I went to a competitive arts high school, which I found detrimental to the growing brain. Art is supposed to help you express yourself, but for me it was the opposite because I wasn't expressive in theater spaces. It was in high school that Stoller first heard the music that captivated her. "In junior year, one of my friends played some music on her phone, and I nearly fell on the floor, hearing those notes. It was 'Waters of March,' by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Elis Regina. "That song opened my eyes and put jazz on my radar," she recalls. "It was, 'So, that's Brazilian jazz. What's American jazz?' Soon, burning through things, I knew all the songs and began recognizing voices. I got into a contemporary singer, Gretchen Parlato, along with Shirley Horn and Billie Holiday. That same energy carried me through college at SUNY New Paltz, experiencing music independently - on my own little jazz journey. "As I was transitioning out of jazz, a huge bridge for me was and is Joni Mitchell. I can sing every single part of every single record of hers. It's that kind of coagulation, mixing songwriter and jazz, which has inspired me. My song 'Frankie' comes from getting that repertoire under my belt, then being bitten by a Joni bug." During her last year of college, in 2019, she picked up a guitar with purpose. "I had only used it for photo shoots," she says, with chagrin. "I didn't have a relationship with the instrument. I knew I had to learn how to play if I was to give songwriting a shot. "This EP is the result of that first exploration. I'm self-taught and have approached songwriting experimentally. This is my first little phase of it. It is something I was thinking about and feeling from an early age. Songwriters were my people. I just was discouraged when I didn't write something beautiful. I didn't want to mess up, so I kept the guitar on the wall. "With 'Frankie,' the second full song I wrote, it came so fast. It was you sit down, you have the instrument in your hand and you write the song. That was a beautiful feeling: to be a vessel, the story coming through me. It was amazing...

Nicky Schrire is a multitalented and inventive British-South African vocalist and composer based in Toronto, Canada. Her work has seen her likened to vocalists Joni Mitchell, Norma Winstone, and Esperanza Spalding with The BostonGlobe's Jon Garelick noting that “though her approach has earned her comparisons to Gretchen Parlato and Becca Stevens, the similarities are superficial…she's got her own thing, and it's very much worth listening to.”A graduate of the South African College of Music and New York's Manhattan School of Music, she studied with Anthea Haupt, Peter Eldridge, Theo Bleckmann, and Dave Liebman. Schrire has performed in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, London, Dublin and South Africa, with musicians including Ben Wendel, Gerald Clayton, Fabian Almazan, Nir Felder, and Taylor Eigsti. She released three critically acclaimed jazz albums-2012's "Freedom Flight", 2013's "Space and Time", and the 2014 EP "To The Spring"-which earned her comparisons to songwriters like Joan Baez and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Renowned composer and drummer Kendrick Scott is putting anecdotes of his learnings from mentor and distinguished trumpeter, Terence Blanchard, into action by leveraging his musical gifts into a visceral artform of healing and redemption. Through original music mixed with poetry and striking visuals, the multimedia event entitled, “UNEARTHED,” featured Scott collaborating with former Houston poet laureate, Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton, the acclaimed Harlem String Quartet along with a trio of talented jazz musicians. Hosted by the arts organization, DACAMERA, the production served as a tribute to the tragic history behind “Sugar Land 95,” the collective name given to the 94 Black men and one woman who were part of a state-run convict leasing program of the late 1800s following the abolition of slavery. Their bodies, buried in unmarked graves, were discovered five years ago during an excavation project in the now trendy suburb of Sugar Land, Texas. I SEE U ventured offsite to tour an exhibit of the Sugar Land 95 Memorial Project in Episode #46. Efforts to expand the memorial are currently underway with the construction of an outdoor learning area and a revitalized cemetery slated to be completed by 2025. In this week's episode, host Eddie Robinson chats in-studio with Houston-native, Kendrick Scott about his decision to shed light on an untold, dark history. We'll hear exclusive audio excerpts from the one-night-only event which premiered in May at Houston's Wortham Theater. Scott also shares inspiration behind the creation of his band, Oracle and reveals how the pandemic, the quarantining, as well as the isolation all played a significant role in the recording of his latest Blue Note release, Corridors. Ep.121 How to Sing and Teach Jazz with Michele Weir

BAST Training podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 26, 2023 49:28

Alexa is joined by Michele Weir, a renowned figure in vocal jazz education and arranging. Michele is the founder of the online school Music Habit and the creator of the app ScatAbility. Additionally, she has written several books on jazz, so who better to talk you through the topic of how to sing and teach this genre? KEY TAKEAWAYS Jazz is a diverse genre with various styles and sub-genres. New Orleans jazz originated in the early 20th century and features collective improvisation. Bebop, which emerged in the 1940s, is known for its complex harmonies, fast tempos and intricate improvisations. Cool Jazz developed in the late 1940s and 1950s, and has a more relaxed and laid-back style, emphasising controlled emotions and intricate arrangements. Contemporary jazz, a diverse category that encompasses various modern jazz styles and fusions with other genres, represents the evolving nature of jazz music. In identifying jazz music, several key elements stand out. The rhythmic style, particularly the swing feel, is a defining characteristic. Singers need to develop their rhythmic sense and feel the groove to deliver jazz convincingly. Additionally, jazz singers must master the art of putting lyrics in rhythm to sound conversational, especially in swing. Another indication of jazz interpretation is when the performer adds improvisation to the melody, showcasing their creativity and spontaneity. In jazz, singers alter notes and melodies to match the lyrics' subtext, using vocal phrasing and melodic variations to convey storytelling and emotions. This improvisational approach allows for unique expressions and deeper connections with the song's meaning. In jazz, ghost notes and articulation add depth and complexity to the music. Ghost notes are subtle, muted tones that enhance the groove, while articulation techniques bring out emotion, expressiveness and individuality in performances. Learning jazz piano benefits jazz singers by deepening their musicianship, improving improvisation, and enhancing timing and phrasing. This knowledge enables more expressive performances and better collaboration with accompanists. Overall, it makes jazz singers more versatile and engaging performers. Scatting is a more organic vocal improvisation technique using nonsensical syllables. A teacher helps by introducing scat patterns, practising rhythm and pitch and helping the singer make up their own rhythms. This week we have hero Gretchen Parlato! Gretchen is my sister Dena's childhood best friend, and I think quite possibly my very first hero! Gretchen has one of the most epic voices in the world, like Aretha, or Ella Fitzgerald epic. She is the reason why I sing, I have admired her since I was a baby, and it was so fun to talk to her and tell her all about how much I respect her and ask her all the questions I've been wondering about since I was a kid! She has new music coming out later this year, so go check it out at her website. https://gretchenparlato.coSupport us at https://www.patreon.com/Deathvalleygirlsand please join the DVG Podcast page on Instagram (@DVGpodcast) Facebook (Death Valley Girls Podcast) Hosted on Acast. Gretchen Parlato burst onto the scene in 2004, when she won the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Voice Competition. Since then, she's been nominated for a Grammy, released five albums, performed with Wayne Shorter, Kamasi Washington, Becca Stevens and more, and massively influenced several generations of jazz vocalists. After 8 years spent exploring and enjoying motherhood, she made something of return to jazz with her album "Flor”, released on Edition Records in 2021. The album celebrates both her re-emergence, a blossoming if you will, and her love for the Brazilian sounds that shaped her.
