Theatre, opera and film director Julie Taymor is regarded as one of the most imaginative directors and designers working today. Her stage version of the Lion King is the highest grossing show in Broadway history, having made nearly $2 billion, and it recently marked its 25th year in London. The Lion King Julie two Tony Awards, including for best director of a musical in 1997, making her the first woman to do so. Julie Taymor has told Shakespearean stories on stage and the big screen including Titus, starring Anthony Hopkins and The Tempest with Helen Mirren. Her film credits also include Frida, a biopic of painter Frida Kahlo, and the Beatles jukebox musical movie Across The Universe. She tells John Wilson how seeing Rashomon, Akira Kurosawa's 1950 film, as a teenager, was a formative cultural experience. Kurosawa's ingenious approach to narrative opened her eyes for the first time about the possibilities of innovative storytelling. She also recalls how her travels around Indonesia and Bali after graduation, and in particular, witnessing a ceremony in the isolated Balinese village of Trunyan have had a profound impact on her work as a designer and director. Julie reveals how she came up with the ground-breaking concept and some of the designs for the stage version of Disney's The Lion King. She also gives her opinion on some of the difficulties faced by the ill-fated Broadway musical Spider Man: Turn Off The Dark, on which she was co-writer and director until being replaced during its previews. The production, which featured music and lyrics by Bono and The Edge of U2, was ridden with technical and financial problems, and resulted in several legal disputes.Producer: Edwina Pitman

It's time to turn off the dark! We talk about the musical Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark and all of the issues that it ran into on stage.
In 2002 the first Spiderman film was breaking records at the box office. Studio executives asked themselves how they could squeeze even more money from it and the answer was obvious: a stage musical. But this was no ordinary stage musical. It featured the music of U2, shared the same director as the incredibly successful Lion King stage production and would see Spiderman and the Green Goblin flying through theatres using technology that not only hadn't been invented yet, but hadn't even been tested in a tech rehearsal. What could possibly go wrong? Tens of millions of dollars and several life threatening injuries later, ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark' became the most expensive, and biggest fail, in Broadway history. December 20th, 2010. It's pitch black on-stage at the Foxwoods Theatre in Broadway. Stunt performer Chris Tierney attaches himself to a safety cable, and takes a deep breath. The centre of the stage lifts, creating a ramp. He's done this many times before. Breathing out, he runs up the ramp and leaps from its edge. Immediately, it's clear something is wrong. The cable hasn't gone taut. There's half a second as he floats in the air, realising that the other end of his safety line is unattached. Then, he's in freefall, plummeting thirty feet towards the concrete floor of the orchestra pit. He hits the ground with a sickening crunch. Someone screams. The audience is deathly silent. Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark is a cautionary tale... This episode was written by Michael Chakraverty This is a Broccoli Production Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The brilliant actor, singer, and director, Robert Cuccioli, is renowned for his critically acclaimed, Tony-nominated dual performance as the good Dr. Henry Jekyll and his sinister alter ego, Mr. Edward Hyde, in Jekyll & Hyde, The Musical. Prior to his sensational run in Jekyll & Hyde on Broadway, Robert dazzled audiences across America in the show's pre-Broadway, first national tour. Both the tour and Broadway featured Linda Eder and Christiane Noll. For Broadway, Robert received Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and FANY Awards for Outstanding Actor in a Musical. For the record: April 28, 2022, marks the 25th Anniversary of Jekyll & Hyde, The Musical opening at Broadway's Plymouth Theater (now called the Schoenfeld Theater).Robert's other Broadway appearances include playing Javert in Les Miserables, and his high-flying performance in another dual role, Dr. Norman Osborn aka The Green Goblin in the rock musical Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark. Robert's first big break was playing Lancelot opposite the legendary Richard Harris's King Arthur in the U.S. and Canadian tours of Camelot. He's also performed in Kander and Ebb's, And The World Goes ‘Round, Off-Broadway as Nathan in The Rothschilds, and years later as Mayer Rothschild in Rothschild and Sons, which was also staged in London's off-West End.Robert's undertaken challenging roles at numerous theaters all over the U.S., appearing in Maury Yeston's and Arthur Kopit's Phantom of the Opera, leading roles in numerous productions of Shakespeare plays, and in classic plays and musicals like Amadeus, 1776, Guys and Dolls, South Pacific, The Sound Of Music, Funny Girl, Oklahoma!, The Man of La Mancha, Jesus Christ Superstar and many more. He's created roles in new musicals and plays, including, White Guy on The Bus, A Moon To Dance By (with Jane Alexander), and Bikeman: A 9/11 Play, among others.TV credits include: The Sinner, Elementary, White Collar, Baywatch, Sliders, recurring roles on All My Children, One Life To Live, Loving and The Guiding Light. Also, you can see Robert in such movies as: The Stranger, The Rest of Us, Impossible Monsters, Columbus on Trial, and Woody Allen's Celebrity. As a director Robert has staged Jekyll & Hyde at Houston's Theatre Under The Stars, the Westchester Broadway Theatre, North Shore Music Theatre, and here in Pittsburgh at the CLO. He's also directed productions of The Glass Menagerie and The Merchant of Venice at the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey. Robert has sung at a host of venues around the U.S., and his exceptional voice can be heard on the original Broadway cast recording of Jekyll & Hyde, and on the cast recordings of Rothschild and Sons, And The World Goes ‘Round, The Maury Yeston Songbook, and Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living In Paris. And please be sure to check out Robert's debut solo album, The Look Of Love. Please note: our humble apologies for technical audio issues mid-show that were beyond our control. Despite the less than ideal sound quality, Robert gives us the gift of his great experience and deep wisdom

Andrew and Wen welcome the very funny Maureen Monahan (Our Cartoon President, Tooning Out The News) to discuss Wen's favorite things, Broadway musicals and comic books. That's right, we're diving in to Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark! The three dive deep into Spider-Man comics, from his origins as a sickly orphan, to the weird edgy take where his sperm killed his wife, to the Tobey Maguire movies we loved, culminating in the Broadway musical that we absolutely didn't. How did a Spider-Man musical featuring Bono, the lady from The Lion King, and zero comic book fans turn out so badly? The answer is obvious but it's still a fun ride!
There isn’t a theatre choreographer more associated with their own unique style than Bob Fosse. The infamous Oscar-, Emmy- and Tony-winning director and choreographer created his own signature technique that distinguished shows like Chicago, Pippin, and Damn Yankees into dance masterpieces. This April, FX launches a new limited television series Fosse/Verdon, based on the 2013 biography by Sam Wesson with a focus on his marriage and collaboration with Gwen Verdon. The sixth and seventh episodes turn their focus onto the creation of Chicago. We see Fosse in the rehearsal room as begins staging the show before being sidelined with health issues. When he comes back after four months, the show becomes much darker - turning into the piece we know and love today. Among the Broadway performers playing those in the rehearsal room are Robyn Hurder, Michael Williams, Fred Odgaard, Alex Wong and this week’s guest, Heather Lang. Heather Lang has performed on Broadway in An American in Paris and Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark and will be back in Jagged Little Pill this fall. In Fosse/Verdon, she plays Sandy, Fosse’s associate on multiple projects from the film of Cabaret to Chicago on Broadway. Here’s our conversation. Learn more about your ad choices. The creative team of SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK often referred to their musical as a "rock & roll circus drama," but there's no way they knew how accurate a description that would become. THWIP THWIP, we're talking Spidey in this one. We touch on some brief history of the webhead, Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark (12:09), the live action movies (15:52), Miles Morales and Spider-Ham (19:26), Spidey VILLAINS (23:57), and the ol' famous "with great power comes great responsibility"...
I don't even know where to begin. Zane Carney is a brilliant guitarist, singer/songwriter, actor, tech wiz, gamer... and his mind! Dare I say, genius? I do. A seeker, he's always asking questions, and he actually listens to the answers. Zane puts the knowledge into action, sans ego, bettering himself, and all in his wake, at every turn. I'm blown away. Literally, mind, heart, and spirit, blown! I knew his music, and I've had enough dealings with him to know how personable, enthusiastic, demonstrative, kind, thoughtful, and lovely he is. Put all that together and the time spent in his good company was like a warm, sweet, cleansing bath, which for two hours washed away and healed six months of pandemic virus. We talked Zane's tenure as a seven-year-old to start, co-star on Dave's World with Harry Anderson, his crazy talented family, picking up a guitar at ten to catch his quickly rising, two years older brother, Reeve, getting good enough, fast enough, to be out touring with major artists while still a teen. The GRAMMY® nominated guitarist, co-founded CARNEY, who slew LA with sold-out residencies, was chosen to play Bono and The Edge's music in Broadway's Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, was hand-picked by John Mayer to join his band, which was a game-changer moving forward, giving him the cred and visibility which he continues to parlay in his solo career which soars, in spite of having had a vocal chord defect, and a years-long debilitating fatigue disorder. The youngin is indefatigable, unstoppable, forever learning, growing, and reinventing. Just days before the world as we knew it shut down, Zane reconnected to acting and was scheduled to star in an LA production of Hair. Corona don't scare and won't stop him. Zane's created a thriving and ever-growing pandemic proof platform for his passions: music, gaming... connecting, another of his magnificent gifts. Zane makes whomever he's addressing the most important person in the world at that moment. Having been on the receiving end of that for these two hours, it's pretty heady stuff. And, he played. His ass off! Originals, I Want to Have Faith Again, and I Love You, at my request, had virtual lighters igniting all over the interweb... as did a cover, requested by our friend, Snuffy Walden. I'll leave that as a closing surprise. Zane Carney is in heavy rotation in my kitchen, and now in my head and heart. I'll be keeping him close... you can too. He streams Live, nightly. Lucky us. For all things Zane https://www.zanecarney.com Apologies for my tech woes... working on it. My queendom for a crew, and a blue president. David and I first met last year as he directed the 90-minute version of FOOTLOOSE on Norwegian Cruise Line. But In New York, he spends his time working with some of the best directors on Broadway from SCHOOL OF ROCK and BEAUTIFUL to LOMBARDI and NETWORK (starring Bryan Cranston). As assistant director, I ask what's kept him from being In the top spot as well as what he think of cruise ship productions. But the show I really focus on is the most reviewed and vilified Broadway show so far this century -- SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK. On the heels of the success of Sam Raimi's 2002 Spider-Man movie, Marvel announced a Spider-Man musical. Bono and The Edge from U2 were tapped to do the music. It seemed like everything was falling into place...then...budget problems, delays, firings, injuries, and even a death eventually lead to the most expensive show in Broadway history. This is the story of Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, and it's accompanying album. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bizarrealbums/support
Spideyfreude (noun): enjoyment obtained from the troubles of the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark. According to the musical’s co-writer, Glen Berger, this is what drove audiences to see his show. It’s also what drove us to read his book Song of Spider-Man, and then watch a bootleg recording of the musical. Join us as we (attempt to) turn off the snark with the help of our extra special guest, Lucy Mueller!

Reeve Carney, best known for his portrayal of Dorian Gray in Showtime’s Penny Dreadful, Riff Raff in Fox’s Rocky Horror Picture Show Reimagining, as well as Originating the role of Peter Parker in Broadway’s Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark, he is thrilled to be returning to his hometown of NYC, to make his Green Room 42 debut which he is here to talk about today. It will feature selections from his 5-time Independent Music Award Winning album, Youth Is Wasted, as well a few surprises from the Broadway canon and the Great American Songbook, Reeve delivers a one-man-show cabaret that feels more like an invitation-only after-party than a traditional concert performance.
KATRINA LENK is no stranger to ensnaring audiences, be it as the seductive viola player in Once or as spider goddess Arachne in Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark. Now her performance in Itamar Moses and David Yazbek's The Band's Visit has had audiences and critics buzzing since it premiered off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company in 2016. With awards season ramping up, The Band's Visit (and Lenk herself) is being hailed as a favorite on the Great White Way. Here's what we learned from Lenk about her hilarious dance teacher growing up, why she gets shy at the stage door, her octopus obsession, why awards season doesn't scare her and more on this week's Show People with Paul Wontorek.

Josh caught up with Zane a few months back while at the LA Amp Show. Zane is a "guitarist, singer, and songwriter, most known for his work with John Mayer, CARNEY, and Broadway's "Spider Man -Turn Off The Dark."' He spills the beans about how he got into the industry and how he continues pursuing music through sickness.
Encore presentation of installment 10/21/2014 Zane Carney currently plays lead guitar for Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark on Broadway with Los Angeles based Interscope Recording act CARNEY. Born and half-raised in NYC, Zane moved to Los Angeles as a child and developed an affinity for the guitar in Junior High when he started performing at local blues clubs. After attending Hamilton High School Academy of Music and touring Japan with the Monterey National All-Star Big Band, he began his collegiate studies at University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music majoring in Studio/Jazz Guitar. As a Guitarist and former Oboist, many of his schooling years included performances with Symphony Orchestras and Chamber Groups which lead to an educational background that is equally classical and jazz. This diversity of musical styles and methods helped to form a unique sound that draws just as much from Jazz as it does Delta Blues, Rock and Roll and Impressionism. Zane has been fortunate to tour the world (Jesse McCartney, Renee Olstead, Armand Sabal-Lecco, etc.), perform regularly on national television (Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel, Good Morning America, etc.), and play lead guitar as an onstage musician at Last Call with Carson Daly and CW's Oh Sit. On top of this, he has performed with a diverse group of jazz artists including John Daversa whose Big Band album "Junk Wagon" and Small Group record "Artful Joy" feature Zane's jazz playing. Outside of session and touring work, Zane is fortunate to have two strong outlets as an artist. One is though his band CARNEY which he shares with brother/lead singer Reeve Carney who is currently playing the title role of Peter Parker in Broadway's Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark. CARNEY has toured the US, Canada and Australia opening for U2, Fergie, The Veronicas, The Black Crowes and Gov't Mule while also playing guitar for John Mayer on the road. The other is as a singer/songwriter creating, recording and performing his own material. In his spare time, Zane teaches music theory and guitar masterclasses at universities in LA and NY. zanecarney.com facebook.com/zanecarneyofficial @zanecarney (Twitter & Instagram)

It seemed that Spider-Man:Turn Off The Dark, the Broadway musical was doomed from the start with the production suffering budgetary issues, actors getting injured attempting aerial stunts, not to mention personality clashes with the show's directing diva Julie Taymor. Now the story behind the web of chaos and collaboration is told from co-book writer Glen Berger who has penned Song of Spider-Man about what it was like to stand side by side with Taymor helping to create her vision, only to be spun out of control. Glen tells host Robin Milling how a need to seek vengeance on then President Bush inspired the scene that would get him the gig. He describes, “the Green Goblin is tickling the ivories on top of the Chrysler Building, ending with him pushing the piano off in order to murder the little ants down below, and winding up caught in Spider-man's web.” Ironically he says that scene may have gotten him the job, but ultimately led to Taymor's dismissal. Glen writes joyously about working with Taymor who he describes as a true artist with a capital 'A' and his devotion to doing whatever it took to realize that artistry. He admits it was a heady experience visiting the Edge and Bono in their Irish homes, watching them orchestrate the musical. Glen observes that problems actually began three months after he joined the project in 2005, six years before opening, when the lead producer Tony Adams dropped dead right as Edge was signing the contract! Veteran Broadway press agent Adrian Bryan-Brown ranges over his 30 year career as one of theatre's most successful "drumbeaters," from his first Broadway show, the 1979 "A Taste of Honey" through the 1985 "Big River" and 1992 "Guys and Dolls" to this season's most-discussed new musical "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark". He also discusses how the role of the press agent has changed as the media has evolved, how social networking has reestablished word of mouth as a key promotional tool, and why when Twittering he can be neither Perez Hilton nor Pollyanna; whether he invests emotionally in the shows he represents; what he has to say to critics after they've beaten up on one of his shows; if he's even been tempted to produce a show himself; how he works with actors facing the press and who he considers the real pros at that game; why he got a degree in zoology when he was planning to embark on a career in film -- and he reveals his special talent for making an iconic NYC-area ice cream cake character. Original air date - September 28, 2009.
