She's an Oboist, Author, Coach, and Podcaster, which might lead you to believe that I only ever interview people who are exactly like me. You'd be wrong, though. Meredith is uniquely herself - and so wise and interesting! You'll hear me speechless over and over at the ideas and frameworks that come out of her mouth. I've long been listening to her podcast, Artists for Joy, admiringly, but with full awareness of how differently we approach our work. And this is what makes humanity so wonderful! An active freelancer and sought-after recitalist, oboist Dr. Merideth Hite Estevez has performed and taught throughout North and South America, Asia, and Europe. She has performed with top orchestras in the US and abroad, including the Met Opera Orchestra and PhillyPops, and is currently the English hornist/Second Oboe of the Chamber Orchestra of NY. She has degrees from The Juilliard School, Yale School of Music, and Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. After more than two decades as one of New York City's busiest freelance oboists, James Roe decided to pivot his career. He packed up his oboe case, reed knife, and metronome to take on leadership positions at two of the ensembles he had regularly performed with. First he spent two years as president and CEO of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, before moving into his current role as president and executive director of the Orchestra of St. Luke's, where he's been since 2015. How did 25 years of performing in symphony orchestras prepare him to lead one himself? For Roe, his seat in the oboe section gave him a strategic vantage point — one that allowed him to see thousands of concerts play out on the faces of audience members in real time. "You could see when something was hitting, that look in someone's eye that meant the music was meaningful to them," Roe says on the latest episode of the Classical Post podcast. "I've taken that into my leadership role because it shows that, as musicians and musical organizations, our mission is not fulfilled on stage — that's only the beginning. The mission is fulfilled in the hearts, minds, ears, and spirits of people in the audience." At the helm of the Orchestra of St. Luke's, Roe oversees more than 70 concerts per season in 20 venues across New York City, as well as a host of education and community programs that help make classical music more accessible for every New Yorker. And through it all, Roe's guiding principle is to ensure "the audience is the focus of everything we do." In this episode, we talk more about the Orchestra of St. Luke's current season — including the Carnegie Hall premiere of Florence Price's Piano Quintet with Marc-André Hamelin and the third year of the ensemble's DeGaetano Composition Institute, where three emerging composers work with composer-mentor Anna Clyne on new pieces to be premiered by OSL. Plus, Roe shares how reading during his daily commute supports his well-being, the inspiration he gets from the "wonderful crackle of anticipation" before a concert begins, and his favorite Manhattan restaurant when he's craving Basque cuisine. — Classical Post® is a leading podcast based in New York. Our content uncovers the creativity behind exceptional music through dynamic deep-dive interviews with prominent artists in the world today.

A former professional oboe and cor anglais player based in London, Sadah Webster now works as an investigator and intelligence analyst. Investigating whistleblower complaints and misuses of public office.QUOTES“I was halfway through a Bachelor of Music degree when I took a year off to study linguistics and live in Thailand.”“I didn't know what I was doing, I was petrified all the time and I was burned out.”“Looking back, emotionally, I think the fact that I was advanced as a player quite early on and I got thrown into a lot of stuff which was great for my playing but emotionally I wasn't ready.”“Because I had solely focussed on being an Oboist, I didn't know anything else.”“I had various attempts at retraining, but a sense of purpose came much later in my emotional journey.”“As a freelancer, you never know why you don't get booked.”“The context in which we learn perpetuates “there's something wrong with me” and the same toxic productivity runs through the law school as in music school.” “Assumptions are being made about your work ethic, motivation and ability to use your time. I had been told by various teachers that I was lazy when I couldn't practice more because instead I had to work to earn a living.”“The only tool the teachers have is “well just practice more”.“The work was more stressful than enjoyable, the balance had totally shifted and I was just exhausted.”“The cost benefit analysis of being an oboist doesn't make sense, but I didn't know how to make that assessment when I was studying.”LINKSFind Sadan on LinkedINPODCAST TEAMProduction Support from Molly Jenkins Audio Engineering from Frazer RuddickTheme Music Composed by Danna YunTheme Music Performed by Jasper LyRECORDEDRecorded on 24 October 2021
Alecia is the Founder, Artistic Director, and Oboist for ROCO, a professional chamber orchestra. Alecia also shares her experience as a parent with her two college age sons. For more information about ROCO, visit www.roco.org.
My guest today is the self-proclaimed “Unfussy Oboist” Jennet Ingle. I love that title…can't wait to hear the explanation. Jennet, who in addition to being the Principal Oboist of the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, is also the creator of tons of online resources for musicians, including her signature group program, Invincible Oboist, that helps oboists get past the struggle to find ease in their playing. Sounds pretty good! She also created the Reed Club, that meets every Monday online for social connection and actual making of fantastic oboe reeds, and a group for beginning reed makers called, “Zero to Reedmaker” which has group classes and elements of accountability. She even has a big announcement about a book that she just wrote and that's coming out soon! Wow…that's a lot of reed talk, and since I am the opposite of an expert on making or playing oboe reeds, let's get right to my conversation with Jennet Ingle. Today I'm having a fascinating conversation with Jennet Ingle, oboist, entrepreneur, teacher, coach, and author. Jennet has put together what she calls a portfolio career. She has managed to create a career that she loves from multiple sources, from orchestral and solo performances to her reedmaking business all the way to her popular online reedmaking courses and even an upcoming book! Jennet's story is an inspiring example of how we as artists are more than capable of forging our own path that can be rewarding both artistically and financially. Full Show Notes

Matt Dine comes from a family of artists. Matt and Kai talk about what made him fall in love with the oboe (11), the episode that changed his life (26:40), and how he found his second career (31). They also discuss what allowing people to take photos during concerts might do for the classical music industry (46:40) and what he's learned about musicians by becoming a photographer (53).

Encore presentation of installment 10/21/2014 Zane Carney currently plays lead guitar for Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark on Broadway with Los Angeles based Interscope Recording act CARNEY. Born and half-raised in NYC, Zane moved to Los Angeles as a child and developed an affinity for the guitar in Junior High when he started performing at local blues clubs. After attending Hamilton High School Academy of Music and touring Japan with the Monterey National All-Star Big Band, he began his collegiate studies at University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music majoring in Studio/Jazz Guitar. As a Guitarist and former Oboist, many of his schooling years included performances with Symphony Orchestras and Chamber Groups which lead to an educational background that is equally classical and jazz. This diversity of musical styles and methods helped to form a unique sound that draws just as much from Jazz as it does Delta Blues, Rock and Roll and Impressionism. Zane has been fortunate to tour the world (Jesse McCartney, Renee Olstead, Armand Sabal-Lecco, etc.), perform regularly on national television (Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel, Good Morning America, etc.), and play lead guitar as an onstage musician at Last Call with Carson Daly and CW's Oh Sit. On top of this, he has performed with a diverse group of jazz artists including John Daversa whose Big Band album "Junk Wagon" and Small Group record "Artful Joy" feature Zane's jazz playing. Outside of session and touring work, Zane is fortunate to have two strong outlets as an artist. One is though his band CARNEY which he shares with brother/lead singer Reeve Carney who is currently playing the title role of Peter Parker in Broadway's Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark. CARNEY has toured the US, Canada and Australia opening for U2, Fergie, The Veronicas, The Black Crowes and Gov't Mule while also playing guitar for John Mayer on the road. The other is as a singer/songwriter creating, recording and performing his own material. In his spare time, Zane teaches music theory and guitar masterclasses at universities in LA and NY. zanecarney.com facebook.com/zanecarneyofficial @zanecarney (Twitter & Instagram)
