Send us a textWhat happens when a teacher trusts students to create theatrical magic? In this captivating conversation from Ayala High School's drama department, we discover how one unexpected career twist transformed English teacher Madeline Sherritt into a theater director who puts students firmly in the driver's seat.Technical Director Aiden Kitavis and Assistant Director Karly Welsh share their journeys from theater newcomers to program leaders, revealing how the department's unique approach fosters both artistic growth and personal development. Rather than micromanaging, Ms. Sherritt creates an environment where students design sets, manage tech, direct scenes, and solve problems as they arise—from figuring out how to transform a multipurpose room into a medieval rock concert venue to determining how to spend their limited, self-funded budget. The conversation centers around their upcoming production of "Six: The Musical," the Broadway hit that reimagines the wives of Henry VIII as a pop group. Securing rights to this coveted show—one of the first high schools to perform it—represents a meaningful milestone for the program. Through candid stories and lighthearted moments (including impromptu appearances by Ms. Sherritt's young children), we see how Ayala's theater program builds not just productions but a genuine community where students become "the calm in the storm" and develop practical skills they'll carry forward.Whether you're a theater enthusiast, educator, or simply appreciate stories of young people exceeding expectations when given genuine responsibility, this behind-the-scenes look at student-led theater will inspire you to reconsider what's possible when we trust the next generation with creative control. Don't miss Six: The Musical at Ayala High School, running May 15-17!Ayala Theatre CompanyInstagramFacebookSixFind STTS:Steps To The Stage (@stepstothestage) | InstagramFacebookSteps To The Stage (buzzsprout.com)Steps To The Stage - YouTubePlease follow on your favorite podcast platform and we appreciate 5 Star ratings and positive reviews!

In this episode of ArtThrob, host Kate Savage engages in a riveting conversation with Ave Lawyer, the visionary co-founder of the site-specific theatre company "On the Verge." Celebrating 16 years of transforming unconventional locations into immersive stages, Ave discusses their upcoming production of the historical drama "The Lion in Winter," set to premiere in late January at the storied Luigart Studios. Kate and Ave explore the unique appeal of site-specific theatre, from performing in eclectic venues like historic homes and vibrant gardens to the tactile challenges of lack of changing rooms and maneuvering audiences through intricate settings.Ave provides a captivating glimpse into the complexity and intimacy of producing such immersive experiences, sharing an amusing anecdote of an audience member's spontaneous involvement in a previous production. They delve into the rich history of Luigart Studios, a venue that transitions seamlessly from its past as a hemp factory and jazz nightclub to its current role as an artistic hub, ready to host the dynamic narrative of "The Lion in Winter."The discussion brings forth the modern relevance of the play, likening its power dynamics and family intrigue to contemporary figures such as Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk. Ave also emphasizes the flexibility of the script's anachronisms, allowing for a contemporary interpretation that resonates with today's audiences. Adding layers of depth, the episode touches on the seasoned cast, including Missy Johnston as Eleanor of Aquitaine and Kevin Hardesty as Henry II, who bring a familial atmosphere both on and offstage.Ticket urgency is a recurring theme, with production popularity leading to quick sell-outs, and the consideration of providing refreshments at their current venue adds to the full immersive experience for the audience. Kate and Ave conclude with a broader discussion on the state of local theater in Lexington, mutual gratitude for each other's contributions, and a hint at a future episode dedicated to this topic. Tim Bray's theatre company is set to close after one more season of its famed Santa Claus Show. The Tim Bray Theatre Company has risen over its 33 years to become the second largest in Auckland. The decision to close comes after founder and artistic director, Tim Bray, was diagnosed with a rare, incurable soft tissue cancer. The company has delivered more than 100 productions and has reached hundreds of thousands of children spanning three generations. They've even performed for the Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall back in 2012. Tim's company has also welcomed young people wanting to learn theatre - they've had workshops for 10 years - typically with about 200 students each term. Another major aspect of the theatre company is its championing of inclusivity - they've had tailored classes for deaf and blind or low-vision children and teens. It was the first company to offer New Zealand sign language interpreted shows and that was back in 2004.
