On November 9th, 1975, the ore freighter, Edmund Fitzgerald, once known as the "Queen of the Great Lakes" left the Burlington Railroad Loading Dock No 1, in Superior, WI. Loaded with over 26,000 tons of iron ore, "Big Fitz" was to arrive at Zug Island, MI 46 hours later, as it had done many times over. As recalled in Gordon Lighfoot's famous song, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," the ship never completed the journey, ending up on the bottom of Lake Superior, taking her crew of 29 men with her. Scott and Mickey discuss the Fitzgerald, the ship's beginnings all the way to her tragic end, as well as Wisconsin's many connections to the most famous shipwreck in Great Lake's history. A defiant chorus of sonic art bears witness to a border town tormented by a mysterious presence in their local soundscape.Hosts Peter Boisseau and Gabrial Hutchcraft explore the entanglement of life and art in this poetry and music-infused journey that includes Protomartyr, Windsor Hum Band, Brian Garbet, Christine Hume, Eric Welton, Adam Makarenko and Jamaal May. For the people of Windsor and nearby Detroit on the US Canada border, the stakes surrounding a mysterious intruder in their local soundscape has become a contest of wills spanning more than a decade. It's a contest that's pitted neighbor against neighbor, city against city and nation against nation. The struggle has become the stuff of legend, a David vs Goliath tale of citizen action, environmental studies and viral media coverage, that over time has inspired music, lyric essays and other forms of sonic art.The latter is the Ode to the Hum, the clenched fists and raised voices of resistance to a sonic plague, a defiant human chorus confronting sound with sound.Looming over this intersection of life, art and torment: The cinematic specter of Zug Island and the notoriously secretive U.S. Steel works factory, the alleged source of the Hum.But something else inhabits this soundscape. In the space of uncertainty between knowledge and opinion, perception and reality, the question remains: Is the Windsor Hum gone or is it still lurking?Sound Design: Brian GarbetSocial Media: Bernadette RillorazaTheme music: PlaydateEpisode guest presenter: Bernadette RillorazaTwitter: @Sound_Pod (soundsinterestingpodcast) IG: @Sound_Pod (soundsinterestingpodcast) FB: Sounds Interesting Podcast

Eric Mannix is a competitor. Lots of senior leaders at big companies are. The CFO of Blue Water Systems is dedicated to growing the success of the manufacturing plants that he now runs. But there's something a little different about Eric's story. What a lot of guys like Eric don't share when walking the halls of facilities are why they do what they do. This episode sets that old-school mentality aside. Eric operates his life on a really cool philosophy: try something hard every day. When he found himself in a misaligned internship just after college, he deployed that Detroit-bred idealism to start building bridges between factory floors and offices. Mannix shares with Mike and McD that he sees humility as a birthright after growing up a kid of Zug Island worker who spent his nights and weekends playing defense for the legendary Little Caesar's youth hockey club. When he got cut from the team at age 16, he didn't give up his lifelong sport… he adapted it. Now, nearly twenty some years later, Eric instills that do something hard everyday mentality in his kids and shares how he competes in ultra endurance sports today. You read that right, this guy doesn't just get up hours before dawn for a workday, he trains and competes at the highest level in events like the Leadville endurance series and can teach you how to drive a Zamboni machine. Zug Island is an industrial island located at the southern city limits of Detroit. Zug Izland is a rock band who joined Psychopathic Records in 2001. Is there any correlation to the 2? Not really. But forget that. ROCK. We dive into the first rock album released by Psychopathic Records. How does it sound? Does Syn have the pipes to stand toe-to-toe with the greats in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame? No. No, I'm not even gonna entertain that thought. But does Syn entertain the Juggalos? Do we get any guest features from their rap-centric label-mates? We'll find out today. So watch where you walk. Be sure that you don't step on any... Cracked Tiles. Zug Island is a man-made island in the river Rouge in the southern part of Detroit. It’s home to a large ironmaking industry with massive blast furnaces. Ore and coal is brought to the island via train and pig iron and coke shipped out. At its peak thousands of people worked there, today only a few hundred, mainly due to automatization and the decline in manufacturing throughout the rust belt. The ”Zug Island hum” are mysterious cyclical rumblings and vibrations that can be felt as far away eighty kilometers away. It is believed they are emanating from the iron-making facilities, but studies are inconclusive and the city has cancelled further investigations due to the general lack of funds. Captain Cooper on the Anderson radios a freighter (the Edmund Fitzgerald) that he spots. 4:15 PM The Fitzgerald spots the Arthur M. Anderson some 15 miles behind it. NOVEMBER 10 1:00 AM Weather report from the Fitzgerald. The report from the Fitzgerald shows her to be 20 miles south of Isle Royale. Winds are at 52 knots, with waves ten feet in height. 7:00 AM Weather report from the Fitzgerald. Winds are at 35 knots, waves of ten feet. This is the last weather report that the Edmund Fitzgerald will ever make. 3:15 PM Captain Jesse Cooper, (J.C.) of the S.S. Arthur M. Anderson watches the Fitzgerald round Caribou Island and comments that the Fitzgerald is much closer to Six Fathom Shoal than he would want to be. 3:20 PM Anderson reports winds coming from the Northwest at 43 knots. 3:30 PM Radio transmission between the Fitzgerald and the Anderson Captain McSorley (C.M.) to Captain Cooper (C.C.): C.M.: “Anderson, this is the Fitzgerald. I have sustained some topside damage. I have a fence rail laid down, two vents lost or damaged, and a list. I'm checking down. Will you stay by me til I get to Whitefish?” C.C.: “Charlie on that Fitzgerald. Do you have your pumps going?” C.M.: “Yes, both of them 4:10 PM The Fitzgerald radios the Arthur M. Anderson requesting radar assistance for the remainder of the voyage. Fitzgerald: “Anderson, this is the Fitzgerald. I have lost both radars. We'll keep you advised of position.” About 4:39 PM The Fitzgerald cannot pick up the Whitefish Point radio beacon. The Fitzgerald radios the Coast Guard station at Grand Marais on Channel 16, the emergency channel. Between 4:30 and 5:00 PM The Edmund Fitzgerald calls for any vessel in the Whitefish Point area regarding information about the beacon and light at Whitefish Point. They receive an answer by the saltwater vessel Avafors that the beacon and the light are not operating. Estimated between 5:30 and 6:00 PM Radio transmission between the Avafors and the Fitzgerald. Avafors: “Fitzgerald, this is the Avafors. I have the Whitefish light now but still am receiving no beacon. Over.” Fitzgerald: “I'm very glad to hear it.” Avafors: “The wind is really howling down here. What are the conditions where you are?” Fitzgerald: (Undiscernable shouts heard by the Avafors.) “DON'T LET NOBODY ON DECK!” Avafors: “What's that, Fitzgerald? Unclear. Over.” Fitzgerald: “I have a bad list, lost both radars. And am taking heavy seas over the deck. One of the worst seas I've ever been in.” Avafors: “If I'm correct, you have two radars.” Fitzgerald: “They're both gone.” Sometime around 7:00 PM The Anderson is struck by two huge waves that put water on the ship, 35 feet above the water line. The waves hit with enough force to push the starboard lifeboat down, damaging the bottom. 7:10 PM Radio transmission between the Anderson and the Fitzgerald. The Fitzgerald is still being followed by the Arthur M. Anderson. They are about 10 miles behind the Fitzgerald. Anderson: “Fitzgerald, this is the Anderson. Have you checked down?” Fitzgerald: “Yes we have.” Anderson: “Fitzgerald, we are about 10 miles behind you, and gaining about 1 1/2 miles per hour. Fitzgerald, there is a target 19 miles ahead of us. So the target would be 9 miles on ahead of you.” Fitzgerald: “Well, am I going to clear?” Anderson: “Yes.
