Ninja Gaiden 4 is the resurrection we were told would never happen. Developed in a powerhouse partnership between the masters of discipline at Team NINJA and the kings of spectacle at PlatinumGames, and published by Xbox Game Studios, it arrived on October 21, 2025. It didn't just break the silence; it shattered it with 120 frames per second of uncompromising, blood-soaked precision.

Ryu Hayabusa, where are you? With assistance from the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button, our dynamic duo returns to Team Ninja's third person action series, but of course it's the sequel to another sequel they didn't play! Adding to the complexity, though Team Ninja was involved, this entry was primarily developed by PlatinumGames. This actually sets expectations a bit higher, at least for Tom. Will he get the same enjoyment he derived from their Korra, Transformers, and TMNT... or will he be disappointed a decade later? The basic formula should be the same, but with a 4 in the title and the main protagonist of the series absent, there are a lot of questions our hosts hope are answered in this first hour of gameplay. Will Tom and Chris be satisfied with the mix of gameplay and exposition? Join them as they discuss their time and let's learn if this sequel to a sequel to a sequel of a reboot is worth some of yours! What do you think? Have you ever considered who Nintendo should acquire next? Over the years, Nintendo has brought some longtime partners fully in-house, such as Next Level Games, which they officially acquired in 2021, and Monolith Soft, which joined Nintendo in 2007 after being acquired from Bandai Namco. But there are still a few studios that feel like they belong under the Nintendo umbrella. Think HAL Laboratory, the team behind Kirby and a close Nintendo partner since the early days; PlatinumGames, known for titles like Bayonetta 2 and Astral Chain (both Nintendo-published); or even Atlus, the RPG powerhouse behind Persona and Shin Megami Tensei. Some fans even toss around Sega as a wild “what-if” scenario, given their long history of collaboration and friendly rivalry. So let's talk about it — which studios make the most sense for Nintendo to acquire, and which ones would completely shake things up?
Cyber-Soldaten! Apokalypse! Blutfontänen! Achterbahn-Railgrinds! Ninja-Bullet-Time! Boobs! Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we add to our series on Portal by interviewing Erik Wolpaw. We talk about his pre-Portal career, burnout, and success on small teams and large. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Podcast breakdown: 1:05 Interview 1:12:10 Break 1:12:41 Outro Issues covered: Valve credits, early Magic: The Gathering, growing up in the shadow of James Garfield's mausoleum, publishing in magazines, piracy early in the industry, getting in, getting sick, constantly shipping and crunch, breaking down, changing culture, having ownership vs not, the exhilaration and camaraderie at the end, drowning in game dev, starting with little films, getting in with the Portal kids, self-motivation at Valve, being on multiple projects, enhancing/amplifying the design, a cohesive experience, puzzle fatigue, gag bumpers, giving the environment a voice, not having to manage a big art team, a very small team, having the pressure off, not even knowing what you have, entertaining yourselves, the benefits of low expectations, having more pressure on the sequel, loving to leave a job, endings coming late, not getting it, thinking things will be bad before they turn out to be good, a notorious imbecile, the biggest "I told you so" moment, a good day has cake, not returning to the well, a Portal game without portals?, just jumping in and making the thing, writing for yourself and your interests, sensing creative investment, good vs crappy games, wanting to make Portal 3, wanting to join the industry, skipping right past the AI conversation, being open about the hard stuff, art: the optional stuff. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Atari 400, Old Man Murray, Chet Faliszek, Tim Schafer, Double Fine, Psychonauts (series), Valve, Team Fortress, Left 4 Dead, Artifact, Half-Life (series), Aperture Desk Job, Richard Garfield, Magic: The Gathering, James Garfield, Scramble, Defender, Ballblazer, Rescue on Fractalus, Microsoft, Gabe Newell, Platinum Games, Source FilmMaker, The Orange Box, Mark Laidlaw, Jay Pinkerton, Narbacular Drop, Kim Swift, Fallout, Tim Cain, Leonard Boyarsky, Republic Commando, Daron Stinnett, Jonathan Coulton, Ellen McLain, The Crab Cracker, Severance, Office Space, Garrett Rickey, Realm Lovejoy, Josh Weier, Dave Grossman, Another Crab's Treasure, Peak, Cursor, Spelunky, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. In episode 082, MetalFRO and Addicted look at a game that started as an April Fool's joke, but quickly developed into a full-fledged classic shooting game, Sol Cresta!
Third person cover based shooters were all the rage in the late 2000s. Unveiled in 2003 in Killswitch and later popularised with Gears of War, they became an essential part of most third person action games. Coming in 2010, Vanquish sought to revolutionise this paradigm by giving the player an omnidirectional slide boost to move around the battlefield in an attempt to energise its plodding pacing. And, broadly speaking, it was a resounding success. People loved the faster pace, the bullet time, the enemy design and the more action orientated dodging of enemies. And even though it didn't sell as well as many other similar games, it developed a huge cult following of people who are still wildly holding on for a sequel to this day.But is Vanquish still as refreshing and innovative as it was back in 2010? Are bullet time and moving around quickly really all that impressive. Can this fast and furious take on third person shooters truly break out of the straitjacket that the genre insists upon?On this episode, we discuss:WeaponsVanquish provides you a wide range of weapons to murder robots, from the more conventional shotguns and sniper rifles to grav cannons and lock on lasers. How fun are these to use, and how well does the weapon upgrade system work in balancing your arsenal?Enemy DesignVanquish enemies are mostly robots of different varieties. Do these serve as compelling foes, from the lowliest grunt to the huge mech-like Argus? Or are they boring to fight against, an endless wave of repetitive drones?CoverVanquish is, at its heart, a third person shooter. Does it do enough to incentivise you to play into the throbbing heart of intense action and brinkmanship, or do you end up ducking behind cover and taking potshots at enemies as you slowly whittle them away?We answer these questions and many more on the 130th episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast!—Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen KOutro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to anotherVanquish OST: Erina Niwa, Masafumi Takada —How aggressively did you play Vanquish? What is god hard mode, and does it drastically change the experience? How would you rank Vanquish compared to other Platinum Games titles? This week we talk about more devs leaving Platinum Games, Nintendo combating scalpers and how it plans to end the life of the Switch, and how the Kingdom Come Developers are tired of the Woke and Anti Woke Crowds.
How about that Superman Trailer....people need to chill. Is Bioware doomed? Is Xbox really going to change to publishing? The Oscars controversy continues, and Robert Eggers is heading to the land of Labyrinth, which I miss David Bowie even more. Also Fans need to chill, for real....
Microsoft and Xbox hit heavily in the last week with their annual Xbox Developer Direct showcasing their three known games and also announced the surprises of Ninja Gaiden 4 with Team Ninja, Koei Tecmo, and PlatinumGames, and the shadow drop of Ninja Gaiden II Black as well. Is this the best edition of the Developer Direct? How excited are Sean and Marc after seeing more on these games? Phil Spencer also did a few podcast interviews in which he both cemented and reiterated the direction of Xbox going forward, could this "everything is an Xbox" actually end up working out for the brand? And is there anything left to innovate on a console that could make the next Xbox worth purchasing? Plus, the Horizon MMO game is rumored to be canceled by NCSoft, Ted Price retires after 30 years at Insomniac Games and is replaced by three CEOs, Ubisoft has some big layoffs, Marc has impressions on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on PC, and much more on this big news edition of Video Games 2 the MAX!You can also watch this episode in video form on the W2M Network Youtube Channel, please give us a like, comment on the episode, and give the channel a subscribe and follow as well: https://youtube.com/live/YWMR5K8SkPoListen as a podcast and give us a review on these platforms... After two weeks of R&R, the Duke boys are back! Plenty happened while we were away. Everything from Oblivion Remake leaking (again) to a supposed Xbox console dropping in 2026 circulated, so we have much to pick up at the start of the new year. For starters, a Developer Direct looms and the lineup could be stacked if it's to include The Outer Worlds 2, Fable, DOOM: The Dark Ages, and South Of Midnight as expected. The question on the tip of everyone's tongue is simply this: "What is the mystery fifth game appearance?" In year one, it was Hi Fi Rush. Year two gave it to a rare third party appearance in Square Enix for Visions Of Mana. The Duke debate what could show up! We also dive into Xbox's sudden competition with Valve as they've lept headfirst into challenging Windows with their own OS. How has this accelerated Microsoft's plans without a handheld ready? Plus, grim estimates of Xbox's current console sales and, even worse, Xbox's sales hits to Game Pass titles!
