The Kickstarter for Escape from Wonderland is LIVE! Support the game here! How do you know when a game is ready for Kickstarter? How far along should it be before bringing it to the world? In this episode, we talk about the delicate balance of presentation—slick, but not *too* slick; done, but not *too* done. We explored how crowdfunding has changed for small creators now that big, well-resourced companies are bringing their games to Kickstarter too. When faced with a rising standard of "doneness," should we try to match them, or pave our own scrappy way? Mentioned in this episode: Yes, L'Oreal did do a Kickstarter (we're not linking to it). Double Fine's adventure game Kickstarter (for the game that would eventually be called Broken Age). Czech Dream documentary. The results for Microsoft Gaming's FY24 Q4 is in and it's mighty telling of where the company is at. On one hand, Xbox is making more money than ever before, but it's come at the loss of hardware sales which are down a staggering 42% YOY. Can Xbox afford to keep this trend up in a world not yet ready for digital only? According to Microsoft CFO Amy Hood, this is all well and fine as the company marches toward content and services. The Dukes dive into all the numbers, including Activision's ability to make the entirety of Xbox a boatload of money in spite of the remaining parts of Xbox plateauing. We also dig into the newest Starborn trademark, Bungie's daunting task ahead of them after massive layoffs once more, and plenty of other subjects in yet another busy week! Pixar Creative Director (Theme Parks), Tasha Sounart, discusses her career journey, from animating at Pixar on A Bug's Life through Cars to directing Double Fine's Costume Quest, to her return to Pixar and overseeing the implementation of Pixar properties in Disney Parks. She shares how video games influence physical attractions, gaming as a family, and her fondness for RPGs and MMOs.[DISCLAIMER: Kyle here. My Host audio quality is subpar in this episode. For our third and final roundtable from GDC 2024, we gathered together a special group of developers who each have more than 30 years of experience making PC games. Our guests:Jordan Mechner - Karateka, Prince of Persia, The Last ExpressWarren Spector - Ultima Underworld, System Shock, Deus ExCharles Cecil - Broken Sword, Beneath a Steel SkyKhris Brown - Voice director & editor for LucasArts, Double Fine, UbisoftOur veteran panel discuss how they got into games (and how unlikely their paths could be replicated today), the challenges of making games with the technology of the '80s and '90s, run-ins with celebrity voice actors like Mark Hamill, and—of course—the history of the Knights Templar.
This week on the Eurogamer Newscast, we discuss the future of Xbox after the announcement Microsoft is shutting a swathe of Bethesda game studios. Hi-Fi Rush and Redfall once seemed primed to benefit from being available via Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft's much-touted subscription service often seen as the best reason to own the company's console. Now, the studios behind both are gone forever. Last year, Microsoft's marketing mouthpiece Aaron Greenberg declared Hi-Fi Rush "a break out hit for us and our players in all key measurements and expectations". Redfall, meanwhile, despite being less-favourably received, had a multiplayer roadmap and a promise of single-player, with hope the Game Pass audience would still prop it up. But Microsoft's reasoning for closing Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin - to focus on bigger bets - suggests Game Pass is no longer a place where creativity can reign without fear of being too niche, and where fun-if-a-bit-mid multiplayer games can't be supported long enough to receive updates just days from completion. So where does this leave Xbox, and Game Pass, and studios like DoubleFine or Ninja Theory still making smaller-sized games? How secure does the team behind Hellblade 2 feel today, even if its game launches and is also dubbed a "break out hit"? I'm joined by Eurogamer's Ed Nightingale and Victoria Kennedy to discuss. The Adventure Puzzler category continues with the cult classic, Grim Fandango, released originally by LucasArts in 1998 for the PC, with remastered versions being released by Double Fine for various consoles throughout the 2010s. Things get heated in this episode as the brothers have vastly different opinions about the gameplay in this hardcore puzzler. Pete is offended by the unnecessarily loud sounds and nitpicks the details of seemingly every puzzle the game has to offer. Ant explains to the world what sound indicates “I'm about to fall.” The characters, storytelling, and music were all high points, but the controls were not so much. Pete and Tom award a specific part of this game as the worst controls in any video game ever made. This week the brothers ask which colorful character from the game would you rather be friends with? Glottis, the fun loving, rambunctious friend who is a bit of a simpleton but always has your back. Salvador Limones, dutiful and faithful to the cause; serious and focused. Chepito, hardworking and gruff, but will tell you interesting war stories. Follow us on X @BrosBossBattles Instagram @BrosBossBattles https://brothersandbossbattles.com/

Takeaways The MSI Claw offers impressive gameplay and unique controls, but its price and design may not be appealing compared to other handheld gaming devices. Andrew joins Ben to discuss a word that is the sliver of overlap in the Venn diagram of the previous two episodes: animate and robot. Ben brings up a (very) minor controversy for Geoff Keighley's “The Game Awards” independent game nominees this year involving Mint Rocket's “Dave the Diver.” Andrew goes on an exotic adventure with a Pringles flavor all the way from Japan! After a very quick definition segment, Andrew shares a traumatic event from his youth involving an animatronic alien at Universal Studios, and then more 70s and 80s movies are discussed. Ben drops a quick Hall of Presidents conspiracy theory and some sad Chuck E. Cheese news before he talks about the interesting origin story of Scott Cawthorn's incredibly popular “Five Nights at Freddy's” franchise. Finally, they come up with an amazing new restaurant idea to close out the show. 00:00:21 - Vacuuming robot revolution crisis possibly averted, pictures with Santa, and work 00:03:35 - Fight Club villain discovery, mental health, and more happy controversial things 00:05:27 - “Dave the Diver” Independent GOTY nomination, and the inventor of the seed drill 00:08:34 - No GOTY love for “RoboCop: Rogue City,” and Ben is just a little disappointed 00:10:15 - How to classify games a independently developed, and a Double Fine edge case 00:12:10 - Andrew's sensory adventure… Addictive Garlic Butter flavored Japanese Pringles! 00:16:45 - The official verdict, the definition, Disney's contributions, Billy Bass, and clockwork 00:22:32 - Scary animatronics, the Neil Diamond antidote, and Andrew's E.T. ride trauma 00:27:00 - Eliot the insurance policy, Stranger Things, and extraterrestrials for the woke agenda 00:29:36 - Blue Thunder, the underrated acting prowess of Roy Scheider, and a JAFO hat 00:31:42 - Bruce the pneumatic shark, cool to creepy, and wanting to take Teddy Ruxpin apart 00:34:29 - At an appropriate distance, David S. Malgré des résultats commerciaux décevants à l'époque, Psychonauts fait partie de ces jeux devenus cultes avec le temps.

It's not often that we focus our attention on the specifics of game development. With that in mind, our latest bonus episode is inspired by Brad's recent love affair with "PsychOdyssey" the exceptional Docuseries that chronicled the development of Psychonauts 2 at Double Fine! That's right, we run through our personal Top 3 lists of the games that we wish would inspire a similar DEEP dive. Answers range from bizarre (Blaseball) to fascinating (Fable) and everything in between.
2 Player Productions is a documentary crew that's been embedded with Double Fine Productions for more than a decade now, having first come onboard in order to follow the development of Broken Age and create the Double Fine Adventure series. However, it's their latest work that's absolutely knocked my socks off. Double Fine PsychOdyssey is, quite simply, the best video games documentary work I've ever seen. It follows the much longer development of Psychonauts 2 and is just the most vulnerable, revealing look into what it really means to create a video game. I cannot recommend it enough. Gosh. It's so good."There's a lot of concern about that meeting, rightfully so. It was the most intense thing we've had on camera and everybody was upset, we were upset. I thought that if we cut it out, it would do a disservice to the evolution of the studio and the way that mindsets at the studio were shaped, the way that the culture was shaped... I'd like to think it shaped the way everybody thought about crunch and what that meant, what that word even means."Support the show
A few weeks ago, game developer Double Fine surprise-dropped a 22-hour documentary about the seven-year creation of Psychnoauts 2. At least that's the premise on paper. In reality, the stunning TV-length doc is a fearless look inside the day-to-day life of a video game studio -- warts and all. The documentarians, employed by Double Fine, have unprecedented access to practically every person and room . Frush and Plante talk about the series, called Double Fine PsychOdyssey, along with The Last of Us TV adaptation. Plus, a delightful new retro gaming book is a perfect gift for video game newcomers.
