Read Riordan reminds us about some minor Greek gods and goddesses we forgot existed. They also did a spotlight on Hypnos, who we'll meet in The Sun and the Star. There's not as much information in here as there was in the Amphithemus article, but Karen's looking out for all those Nyx references. There's apparently going to be a Lightning Thief tie-in edition. Plus another Camp Half-Blood Confidential? It's been one whole year since Walker has been cast, and it feels both like an eternity and no time at all. Did you catch the video of Timothy Omundson talking about being cast as Hephaestus in Percy Jackson and the Olympians? Because it's pretty great. Are you Team Kristen or Team Kristen's Brother? Egyptian mythology in pop culture (00:20:13) Kristen kicks us off with an Easter classic—The 10 Commandments. She explains what it's about and some of its shortcomings. Apparently there are a lot of drapes? It doesn't have mythology, per se, but there are a lot of cultural aspects to the film. Karen's gotta talk about The Mummy (1999), of course. This kicked off her interest in Egyptian mythology. The flashbacks to Ancient Egypt were probably not super accurate, but interesting, nonetheless. We don't talk about The Mummy 3. Or the Mummy reboot. Or The Scorpion King. Next up is Prince of Egypt, Kristen's second pick. This one is animated! It also contains a chariot race explaining why the Sphinx is missing a nose. Moon Knight is a much more recent property dealing in Egyptian mythology. Watching this show really got Karen excited about reading The Kane Chronicles. They also highlighted a lot of lesser known Egyptian deities. You can't talk about Egyptian mythology in pop culture without mentioning Indiana Jones! Specifically, The Lost Ark. They also have to find the last piece to the Staff of Ra! The Map Room at Tanis shows a lot of hieroglyphics and iconography. Have you ever heard of the book series Everworld by K.A. Applegate? Gods and monsters and heroes from different pantheons all exist in the same world! Egyptian mythology definitely existed, but Karen mostly remembers Hel from Realm of the Reaper. Next up is Night at the Museum, which actually did a lot of things right by Egyptian culture and mythology. Karen also learned something knew about SHAZAM and Black Adam. Do you have any other suggestions of books, movies, or TV that talk about Egyptian mythology? The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid (00:56:39) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 6. Kristen totally called that sleeping without the headrest was a mistake. We got our first Prophecy Count of The Kane Chronicles! How many gods were released? How many are on the board right now? Is Bast the one that's weak and easily manipulated? Karen went down a rabbit hole about dreaming in black and white. Karen knows what it's like to wake up to a cat on her chest. What's up with Sadie and Carter's clothes? We really enjoyed the moment where Carter discussed why he dresses the way he does. Khufu's meal choices are interesting… What do we know about lapis lazuli, and will it be important? We are big fans of Philip of Macedonia. Will there be invisible pets in the future? We finally, FINALLY get some answers!! Are Egyptian gods still worshipped? Can you compare the supercharged relics to the Spoils of War from Percy Jackson? It's sad that Carter never knew the stakes when it came to his life on the road with his father. We finally know why Sadie and Carter were separated! The Duat is such an interesting concept, with such incredible imagery. Someone's totally gonna trick them into opening the door. Today on Too Opinionated, we sit down with actress Elana Dunkelman!  Elana Dunkelman is a fast-rising actor and voiceover artist. Elana's first big break came when she was cast as a voice actor for the protagonist role of Fenyx in Ubisoft's Immortals Fenyx Rising. She was recognized her role with a 2021 Canadian Game Award nomination for Best Female Performance. Since then Elana has been featured in several major film and television projects including Being Human (Syfy), Workin' Moms (CBC/Netflix), Reign (The CW), Designated Survivor (ABC/Netflix), Murdoch Mysteries (CBC), Anne with an E (CBC/Netflix), Good Sam (Netflix), My Sallinger Year (Mongrel Media), Transplant (NBC/CTV), The Bold Type (Freeform), and One Delicious Christmas (discovery+). Her voiceover work has been featured in highly acclaimed productions including Assassin's Creed Odyssey (Ubisoft), Hotel Transylvania: The Series (Disney Channel), and the Immortals Fenyx Rising series (Ubisoft). I don't believe in any god. I don't think that's a particularly unusual point of view in 2022, at least in some parts of the world, but if I did there are certainly some moments that stick with me as things I'd have potentially given a deity credit for. I was once sat under a tree watching a game of amateur cricket. From the tree fell the largest pinecone I'd ever seen and to probably ever exist in the history of the world. The kind of pinecone that if it were to land on a head, would crush it like a hammer on a watermelon. This pinecone got so close to my head I heard it woosh past my ear. Death by pinecone avoided, but was it a god that saved me? I walk the same route every weekday as I take my son to school. Not too long ago, on a surprisingly warm morning in September, my brisk walk was brought to a sudden halt as a heavy droplets pummeled the pavement just a few feet in front of me. Bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, they hit. I checked myself. I checked my son. No bird shit had hit us. We were safe. Was this a god? Years ago I was brushing my teeth. This wasn't anything out of the ordinary, but what happened mid-way through was quite unbelievable. Brushing away, like I always do, I got a bit carried away. The brush zooming in and out too fast to be able to fully control, it launched out of my grasp and into the air. Where was it to land? That's right... on my head! It just sat there, perfectly balanced. The work of a god? As I said, I don't believe in a god, but you must agree that these incredible moments really are hard to rationally explain. Anyway. Immortals Fenyx Rising is a great, fun adventure game that mixes elements of the open-world design of Breath of the Wild with God of War/action game-ish combat. It doesn't take itself too seriously, it looks great, has a load of interesting stuff to do, and deserves to be remembered more fondly than it is. It also features lots of gods. Alex – Black & White Right, listen. This is definitely Alex talking (Brummies!). Don't listen to anyone that tells you Black & White isn't a classic. It's a god game where the whole concept is about believing a god into existence. It's not watching some AI wander around a house and use a microwave. This absolutely deserves to win. Up the Birmingham FC! Kelsey - The Sims 4 The Sims 4 is a god game, despite what Tom may think. You, the player, are an omnipotent being who gets to determine whether your Sims live out happily ever after, or merely become a Peeping Tom. Better yet, if someone isn't co-operating, you can also find some creative ways of making your Sims miserable, or worse, in receipt of a visit from the Grim Reaper.
