We kept the mics recording and now present you with the very first “After Hour” in which Tom and Chris continue their conversation with their special guest Chris Coplien (from the Retro Hangover Podcast) and dig deeper into their feelings regarding Sea of Stars. Just the composer's name alone has Tom intrigued. If you want to request a game for our hosts to play, mentioning that it was “inspired by Chrono Trigger” is a strong place to start, but noting that Tom's favorite composer contributed ten tracks to the soundtrack might be an even more powerful strategy. Amazingly, both are true in the case of this retro-inspired indie role-playing game developed by Sabotage Studio, requested by Chris Coplien from the Retro Hangover Podcast. Conveniently, he was also available to be the special guest for this episode, so if the recommendation proves totally terrible, he is on hand to answer for his crimes! That said, if the studio's prior game “The Messenger” is any indication, it seems more likely that this game will have a strong nostalgic foundation and incorporate new mechanics that bring a classic genre into the modern era of gaming. Well, that's enough speculation! All three hosts have played the first hour of the game and they are now ready to make an important decision. Will this game deliver on the promised hype? The final mainline FF title for the SNES, FF6 pushed the boundaries of what a JRPG could be, and set a new tone for the series moving forward; whereas 1 through 5 were somewhat more lighthearted, 6 marks the beginnings of the FF series tackling heavier, more mature topics and themes. In this installment, we cover all of the development history, talk about thematic material, the phenomenal soundtrack, and much more. Sly 2: Band Of Thieves released at a special time in 3D platforming history: the GTA era.  In much the same way that Ubisoft would eventually set the (dismal) standard for open worlds, Grand Theft Auto 3 went on to define how 3d action games should be made.  The three big platforming names of the PS2 - Jax and Daxter, Ratchett and Clank, and of course, Sly Cooper, all radically shifted their macro level design in the wake of GTA's popularity. What does that mean?  It means we've got an open world, instead of the more linear levels of Sly 1.  It means that we've now got 3 playable characters to spice things up instead of just playing as Sly.  And it means that we're moving the focus away from platforming to instead give players a hundred different things to do - minigames galore! But does this wide and splashy approach to a platformer yield a more compelling experience than the more focused and restrained platformers that came before it?  Or did GTA make Sly 2 take a turn for the worse? On this episode, we discuss:In what ways does Sly 2 utilise its open world, both narratively and mechanically?  Is it there just for the sake of it, or does it more than justify its existence?Has the storytelling and atmosphere of Sly 2 improved over Sly 1?  Does the move away from a more abstracted type of platforming actually matter?Does Sly 2 delight with its focus on novel minigames, or does this come at the cost of deeper and more engaging mechanical gameplay? We answer these questions and many more on the 90th episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast!—Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen KOutro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to anotherSly 2 OST: Peter McConnel—Listen to Pat's appearance on the Retro Hangover Podcast for Duke 3D here!—Use Bobtff under interlacing settings in your emulator for the cleanest visuals

Diablo 2 is one of the most influential games ever made.  Evolving on the basic formulae created in Diablo 1, it introduced many concepts that are now considered genre staples: skill trees, socketed items, champion packs and the stash.  Not only have countless games just like it come in its wake - every single element of this game has been spun off into other genres.  MMOs take from Diablo 2.  FPS games take from Diablo 2.  Its tendrils writhe deep into the flesh of the gaming landscape, even today. But for all of its influence, is it still worth playing the original?  If every aspect of what makes this game has been evolved upon, not just in its own genre, but in others, can the humble original still be worth playing over everything that has come out since? We are joined by special guest Shane Koski of the Retro Hangover Podcast to delve deep into exactly what it is that makes Diablo 2 tick - and whether, at the end of it, it is worth playing an ARPG that is over 20 years old.On this episode, we discuss:How well has the action component of Diablo 2 held up?  Is running, evading enemy fire, using abilities and potion chugging still the frantic and fun experience it was back in 2000?Do Diablo 2's skill trees offer a good level of customisation and creativity in its character builds?  To what degree must you rely on external research when forging a character?Does Diablo 2's itemisation hold up in the face of modern takes like Diablo 3 and Path of Exile?  Does a flatter power curve (rune words aside) lead to a more engaging game, or one where power ups are hardly noticeable? We answer these questions and many more on the 84th episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast!—Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen KOutro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to anotherDiablo 2 OST: Matt UelmenWe had yet another excellent guest on the show - Shane Koski of the Retro Hangover Podcast!  They do deep dive critiques of video games that are at least 10 years old, and they have some fantastic stuff - I highly recommend checking out their Tomb Raider and Parasite Eve episodes.  You can also join their discord community here to join the conversation.—Our Diablo 1 EpisodeThe Hidden Cost of OptimisationSwampleticsRhykker's Youtube Channel—What is it exactly about Diablo 2 that makes people enjoy it more than any other ARPG?  Are Rune Words really as bad as we say, or do they overall add to the experience?  Did you have a similar experience to us on Diablo 3 launch day?  Come let us know what you think on our community discord server!

House of the Dead 2 is one of the most famous, and most successful, arcade cabinet games of all time.  Not only that, it's been credited along with Resident Evil for spearheading the resurgence of zombies in media that occurred in the late 90s.  But for all its success, I don't think anyone could have anticipated the spinoff title that would emerge just a year later: The Typing of the Dead. The game stays shockingly close to the original, with the main change being replacing shooting bullets at enemies with typing increasingly difficult words and phrases, with each keystroke representing a bullet.  You're still on rails, still following the same story, but instead of a gun you have a Sega with a giant battery strapped on your back.  It's a bizarre game, and you can't deny the novelty - but is it actually a fun game to play?  Or does it's legacy and value lie in its strangeness alone? On this episode, we discuss:Just how bad is Typing of the Dead's storytelling and voice acting?  Does bad voice acting have any intrinsic value, or are we lucky to have the professional voice acting of the present? Is there any value to dynamic difficulty whatsoever, or is it always going to be worse than having selectable and set difficulty options? How much of the enjoyment of Typing of the Dead can be attributed to the aesthetics and feel of blowing apart zombies with each keystroke?  We answer these questions and many more on the 83rd episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast!—Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen KOutro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to anotherTyping of the Dead OST: Tetsua Kawauchi—Next fortnight we're taking on the giant of the ARPG scene: Diablo 2!  We'll be joined by special guest Shane of the Retro Hangover Podcast to evaluate if it can possibly be worth your time to go back and play one of the most famous Blizzard titles ever made.  Check them out for some great discussion of retro video games!—Is Typing of the Dead the only good typing game in existence?  What do you think of the original Light Gun games that its based off?  Should James feel ashamed for no longer using a mechanical keyboard?  Come let us know what you think on our community discord server!
