There really isn't any company out there like Blizzard Entertainment. In a world devoid of third places, World of Warcraft, Starcraft II, and Diablo 4 have become that for very, very many people-- including Buddy and Mango. So, in a world where Jeff Kaplan gives his five and a half hour interview to Lex Friedman charting the course of those early days, and Jason Shrier published a book called Play Nice all about those backroom politics, the question becomes: What do two people living and breathing in these worlds think of all that? It's probably one of the most important video game companies in the world and to us. Today, Stef Sanjati is a creator on YouTube with over half a million subscribers. Her content mostly focuses on her two greatest loves — makeup and gaming — often combining the two with her otherworldly video game-inspired beauty tutorials. Growing up in small-town Ontario, though, Stef was a quiet, introverted kid who was bullied a lot. For one thing, she looked different from her peers. Having been born with a rare genetic condition called Waardenburg Syndrome, Stef has several distinct physical features, including wide-set blue eyes and a natural streak of white hair. But there was something else that she didn't quite have the words for back then – something she felt closest to while playing as her favorite avatar in World of Warcraft, the massively multiplayer online role-playing game by Blizzard Entertainment. That something else was that Stef is trans. Choosing your player is a near-ubiquitous experience in gaming. Whether it's picking from a stock of ready-made options in Mario Kart or carefully calibrating a custom avatar in World of Warcraft, a gamer's choice of character has a huge impact on the gaming experience. But when a gamer is given the chance to choose, or even build, a brand new identity outside of the one they experience every day, the potential impact goes far beyond simple gameplay. Released in June 2023, Diablo IV brings players back to the dark, demon-infested world of Sanctuary with a new open-world structure, seasonal play, and a whole lot of skeleton-clicking chaos. At the time of this recording, Diablo IV holds a Metacritic score of 86. According to HowLongToBeat, the main story clocks in around 26 hours—though depending on your build, your class, or how easily distracted you get by side dungeons, it can stretch much longer.Alex played on both PC and Steam Deck and completed the main questline. The video game industry is raking in more money than ever, but it's also in complete crisis. In the past couple of years, we've seen countless development studios shuttered and tens of thousands of workers laid off, all while the cost of making and buying games keeps skyrocketing. How did one of the world's most successful industries end up in such a state of instability? This week, Adam sits down with Jason Schreier, a Bloomberg reporter covering the video game industry and author of Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, to break it all down. Jason Schreier, Bloomberg journalist and author of the new book Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, joins Roth to talk about what's been going on with the company that makes Warcraft and Overwatch. Along with Defector comrade Luis Paez-Pumar, they discuss what the story of Blizzard means for the story of gaming as a whole and the similarities between media companies and games companies, especially when comparing Blizzard and G/O Media. Don't worry, they balance it out by naming so many guys who were on the Jets and Nets in the 2000s and diving into the Funbag.Do you want to hear your question answered on the pod? Today, I'm talking to Jason Schreier, a Bloomberg journalist and author of the new book Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment. If you don't know Blizzard, you do know its games — the studio behind Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch has achieved legendary status over three decades. At the same time, the company has become emblematic of many of gaming's biggest failings. Jason's book is out on October 8th, and it's an incredible, detailed accounting of how Blizzard started, grew into a hitmaker and, eventually, became a victim of its own mismanagement. Oh, and there are a series of chaotic acquisitions along the way, culminating in Microsoft's purchase of Activision Blizzard last year. In this episode, Jason and I get into all of this and more.  Links:  Play Nice: The Rise, Fall and Future of Blizzard Entertainment | Hachette  How Blizzard's canceled MMO Titan fell apart | Polygon Blizzard was built on crunch, co-founder says, but it's ‘not sustainable' | Polygon Inside Activision and Blizzard's corporate warcraft | Bloomberg Blizzard cofounder's new company Dreamhaven aims to recreate old magic | Bloomberg Activision Blizzard's rot goes all the way to the CEO, alleges report | The Verge Activision Blizzard's workplace problems spurred $75 billion microsoft Deal | WSJ California settles Activision Blizzard gender discrimination lawsuit | The Verge Microsoft completes Activision Blizzard acquisition | The Verge Microsoft lays off 1,900 Activision Blizzard and Xbox employees | The Verge Credits:  Decoder is a production of The Verge, and part of the Vox Media Podcast Network.
