Send us a textDennis Benigno, the mastermind behind Street Cop Training, takes us on an enlightening journey through his dynamic career in law enforcement. From his humble beginnings as a corrections officer in New Jersey to becoming a US Park Police officer in Washington, DC, Dennis offers a unique window into the often unseen realities of police work. His candid reflections on the highs and lows of his career, the driving force behind his passion for better police training, and the humorous backstory of our podcast's name, "Two Cops, One Donut," provide both depth and levity to our conversation. We explore the diverse experiences of policing in communities from Flint, Michigan, to Houston, Texas, revealing the complexities of economic disparities and cultural diversity in law enforcement. Dennis shares how his military service and upbringing influenced his career trajectory, ultimately inspiring him to revolutionize police training. Our discussion doesn't shy away from the tough topics, tackling the financial challenges faced by officers across different states and the evolving issues surrounding qualified immunity. Through Dennis's insights, we examine the pressing need for modernized police training, advocating for practical skills like jiu-jitsu and continuous skill development. The conversation also highlights the importance of camaraderie, peer recognition, and the emotional bonds formed within the force. As we wrap up, we invite you to join us at an upcoming law enforcement conference in Nashville, promising an event filled with engaging topics and groundbreaking collaborations aimed at transforming police training and supporting officers in their critical roles.#streetcop #streetcoptraining #police #training #education #cops #lawenforcement

According to a recent investigation by the New Jersey Office of the State Comptroller, law enforcement officers being trained by the for-profit training company Street Cop were “taught unconstitutional policing tactics, glorified violence, denigrated women and minorities, and likely violated a myriad of state laws and policies.” Street Cop does business with law enforcement agencies in 46 different states. Shirley LaVarco, an attorney at Civil Rights Corps joins us to unpack the failures of police training, especially in the unregulated environment in which these private companies operate. Her analysis, laid out in The Appeal, argues that more police training will not make people safer, reducing unnecessary police encounters will. LaVarco writes “While banning pretextual traffic stops won't fully transform the culture of racism and misogyny permeating American policing, it is a common-sense first step.” Read LaVarco's piece in The Appeal: https://theappeal.org/police-training-violent-racist-ban-pretextual-traffic-stops/ The RISE Houston campaign seeks to end pretexutal stops, end the city's contract with ineffective surveillance technology like Shotspotter, freeze police spending and invest in evidence-based solutions that actually make communities safer. Joining us is one of the visionaries behind this campaign—Joy Davis, a community organizer with Pure Justice. Ever wondered what it's like to chase down a suspect or decode the silent messages in gang graffiti? Pull up a seat as I, Erik Lavigne, team up with my fellow law enforcement veteran, Eric Tansey from Failure to Stop podcast, for an unfiltered chat on the quirks and conquests of our police days. We're peeling back the curtain LIVE, on the camaraderie that binds the badge, sharing tales that fluctuate between laugh-out-loud and profound, all while sipping on our preferred drinks and pondering the complexities of wine certification.Strap in for a riveting patrol through the landscape of policing, where Hawaiian shirts clash with department policies and body cams capture every calculated move. Our guest, an early bird with a penchant for stand-up comedy, joins the discourse, infusing the conversation with humor and unexpected entrepreneurial insights. From the importance of emotional intelligence to mastering the art of de-escalation, we dissect the skills that define not just a good cop, but a great one, and how these lessons transcend the streets and shape our personal lives. As we bid farewell, we don't just tip our hats to the thrills of the job; we also reflect on the quieter moments of gratitude that round out the life of those who serve and protect. There's no shortage of thanks for our supporters who keep the conversation between the community and law enforcement alive. So, whether you're part of the force, an avid supporter, or simply curious about what goes on behind the badge, this episode is a salute to the unsung heroes and the heartfelt journey of policing.Support the showPlease see our Youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/c/TwoCopsOneDonut
Welcome to this bonus episode of the Cops and Writers Podcast. A little while ago, my good friend Kathleen Donnelley approached me asking if I would give a presentation to the Rocky Mountain Mystery Writers Association regarding Verbal Judo. How can I turn down a good friend and a chance to talk? One minor hitch. I'm not an instructor of Verbal Judo or some kind of Verbal Judo guru. After some self-reflection, I recalled the thousands of times myself or other cops on the street used Verbal Judo (or whatever they are calling it today) and I thought I could talk about that. Here are some of the talking points.-Flashbacks to being in the academy in 1995 and receiving Verbal Judo training. -Props to Dr. George J. Thompson who literally wrote the book, Verbal Judo, Updated Edition: The Gentle Art of Persuasion. -Attending an eight-hour class given by Dr. Thompson.-Sometimes you can say things the right way and say the right things, and the incident can go sideways in the blink of an eye. -People would rather be asked than be told.-People prefer options over threats. -The history of law enforcement and de-escalation. -Some quick and easy ways to avoid fights or confrontations. On today's special episode we present Metal of Honor recipient and American Hero, Kyle Carpenter's key note speech from our 2023 Street Cop Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. It was our honor to have him speak to over 1700 cops to share his story of heroism, perseverance and resiliency. William "Kyle" Carpenter (born October 17, 1989) is a medically retired United States Marine who received the United States' highest military honor, the Medal of Honor, for his actions in Marjah, Helmand Province, Afghanistan in 2010. Kyle Carpenter was the youngest living Medal of Honor recipient at the time. Kyle grew up in a loving household where sports, hard work, and dedication were supported. Chris is a fantastic person. He fought crime in some of Phoenix's meanest and most dangerous streets. They're known to be riddled with drug cartels, and we'll look into that. We'll also talk about him being involved in three cop shootings and losing a close buddy in one of them, as well as the other officers who were killed while he was in the Phoenix police department. This is an awesome narrative about his success, but he is also incredibly committed to giving back. He has become a champion for mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Heather is a phenomenal leader and a very strong woman. Heather will give a remarkable story, but she also teaches for Street Cop. Her former spouse, who was also a law enforcement officer, allegedly assaulted her for four hours in 2008, holding a knife to her throat and a gun to her head, but she managed to survive. She will go into great detail when she explains how it occurred. It's an extremely moving tale, and you'll learn what she has accomplished since then.
