The Cognitive Crucible is a forum that presents different perspectives and emerging thought leadership related to the information environment. The opinions expressed by guests are their own, and do not necessarily reflect the views of or endorsement by the Information Professionals Association. During this episode, Dr. Wayne “Mike” Hall discusses his latest capstone book: the Moral Imperative of Our Time-Purposeful Intellectual Growth. According to Mike, America's intellect is sharply declining; he implores national security leaders to address this problem immediately by: 1) improving individual learning, 2) promoting organizational learning, and 3) encouraging intellectual mentoring. Satisfying these callings is the moral imperative. Mike also discusses other important themes such as: will, incorporating information and cognition as warfighting domains, how to think in today's fight, non-linearity and complex systems, anticipation compared to prediction, and the importance of initial conditions, and unity of effort. Research Question: Mike Hall suggests interested students examine: How does this fit into DOTMLPF? How do we get politicians to understand Clausewitz? Join me on the Fast Track to Grant Writer: www.teresahuff.com/vip The Link Between Competition and a Scarcity Mindset Competition is at the heart of every grant application, and a scarcity mindset can come from a position of competition. Many nonprofits work on a very limited budget, so the struggle with a scarcity mindset is common. After all, you wouldn't be applying for grants if you already had the money, right? Nonprofits applying for the same grant are likely providing parallel services to a similar demographic, so the unfortunate reality is that organizations fighting for the same cause are competing with one another for funds and therefore, feeding the sector-wide scarcity mindset. In today's podcast, retired Army Colonel Dr. Vincent Lindenmeyer helps us think creatively to work collaboratively with otherwise competing organizations so both teams can overcome the scarcity mindset and get more done. What Collaboration and Grant Funding Look Like Together During his 26 years in the US Army, Vince specialized in engineering, logistics management, and strategic studies, so he knows what creative collaboration looks like. He now applies his knowledge and experience to the nonprofit sector. As principal of Beacon 4sight Group, Vince helps women, veterans, minorities, persons with disabilities, and the formerly incarcerated start nonprofits and businesses to create economic growth for equality and justice. Many of Vince's clients begin with little more than a dream, but he helps them get their nonprofit started in 90 days. He knows the power of creative collaboration to overcome scarcity. Like-minded organizations need to share resources, time, and talent to create in-kind partnerships based on trading complimentary skills and backgrounds. 7 Empowering Benefits of Working Collaboratively Wonderful things can happen when organizations work together: Extra personnel Everyone gets more done when you have more hands on deck working toward the same goals. Share tips and tricks Share knowledge to solve problems and work more efficiently. Stronger bottom line Struggling nonprofits become stronger by giving and receiving resources and expertise. Larger network Collaboration breeds collaboration, so when you partner with an organization, you will also get to work with their connections. Stay in your lane Collaboration means sharing complementary skills to boost each other's weaknesses so you can focus on your strengths. Increased visibility and community awareness When you get more done together, both organizations get a piece of the spotlight to bring awareness to both your cause and your brand. Celebrate your wins together Collaboration means having more to celebrate and more people to celebrate with! If we truly want to make things better and improve our mission, then we have to cooperate. It's not about us. It's not about the scarcity. It's so much more. We have to work together. We have to ask ourselves how we can give back to the community and improve each other's mission, whether or not it comes back directly to us. To read today's full episode: 7 Reasons Working Collaboratively Helps Your Team Get More Done To watch and share my TEDx Talk, The Real ROI of Grant Writing. It's a wide ranging conversation about leadership and teamwork, and how to do both in incredibly challenging situations. Colonel (Retired) George Reynolds has accumulated over 43-years of combined experience within the Department of Defense (DoD) in uniform – U.S. Army – and as a federal employee, both civil service and contractor. During his Army career spanning thirty-one years – 28 as an officer –his key military areas of expertise included leadership development; force management and development; and tactical, operational, and strategic planning and execution in peacetime and combat. Throughout this entire period, George was a change manager, mentor, and developer of leaders. As a Department of Defense civil servant, George supported the NATO-led military operations in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Resolute Support) as a senior advisor. In this capacity, he provided critical guidance, advice, and mentorship in the areas of good governance and sustainable institutional capacity building to key leaders within the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan security ministries. As with his time in uniform, these missions called on his skills in change management and leadership development, and leveraged his emotional and cultural intelligence. Since 2015, George has served as program and course manager of the Defense Security Cooperation University's (DSCU) Ministry of Defense Advisors (MoDA) and Defense Advisors Program (DAP) training endeavors. During this time, he has planned, managed, and executed the training of over 400 career Department of Defense career employees and United States military service members enabling them to effectively serve globally with strategic partner countries at the ministerial/cabinet level. George Reynolds has a B.A. in Business Management, M.S. in Strategic Studies, and an M.A. in Military Studies. He is also a graduate of both the US Army War College and the US Army Command and General Staff College as well as the US Army Force Management School. Colleen and George are co-founders of Trellis Life Management, LLC., a leadership consultancy that teaches science-based techniques and use highly researched tools to bridge the gap from desiring improvement, increasing self-awareness, setting concrete goals, and, ultimately, to attaining sustained, meaningful change. They split their time helping people through Trellis Life Management and full-time jobs managing an intense 7-week program preparing senior DoD employees to work as advisors to ministers of defense across the globe. For a period of time, Colleen moved to another project under a different manager, in that case a 2-Star Marine General (Retired). What a lesson that was for Colleen in the impact of vastly different leadership capacities. The retired 2-Star created a hostile, toxic work environment, in sharp contrast with the leadership abilities and style of George. It's a great illustration of how we can all learn to become more effective relational leaders--no matter where we are in our careers. Welcome back to another interview on Unlocking Your World of Creativity. We had the pleasure and honor to sit down and speak with Major General Robert W. Mixon, Jr. In the US Army, General Mixon commanded the 7th Infantry Division and Fort Carson, Colorado. He has served in executive leadership positions in both for-profit and not-for-profit companies prior to starting his own leadership company, Level Five Associates, in 2014. He is also the co-author of a best-selling book on Amazon, “Cows in the Living Room: Developing an Effective Strategic Plan and Sustaining It” and the author of “We're All In: The Journey to a World-Class Culture”, which became a "Best New Release" on Amazon in 2017. In today's episode: Major General Mixon breaks down his 6 key principles of success in leadership The value veterans bring to the workplace General Mixons company, Level Five Associates and how his time in military service developed the insights, discipline, and vision necessary to transform capable people into unsurpassed business leaders.6 Principles of SuccessAzimuth - A term learned in the military. It's your cardinal direction for the organization, for the team. You set the azimuth, which includes your mission intent. Listen - Becoming more effective listeners. Trust and Empower - Empowerment is the embodiment of trust. But if we don't nurture that aspect of our culture, then we'll end up with an environment of distrust, which is toxic. Do the Right Thing When No One is Looking - “As we say, at the Pentagon, that briefs well, but it's very difficult to do because we have to value the process over the outcome and do the right thing.” When in Charge Take Charge - It's not being loud and profane and directive. It's being calm in the chaos.Balance the Personal and Professional - Taking your careers very seriously, your mission very seriously, but not taking ourselves that way. Promoting balance among each other. It's not all about time with work life. It's about having the values that you really believe in guide your actions, and that's where balance lives.“The plan is a basis for change. And if we are not adaptive as leaders, as organizations, and we are rigid in our fixation on the plan, then I think our chances of success are very low.”Value Veterans bring to the Workplace a sense of duty, a sense of doing what needs to be done. They're reliable. They're gonna be used to getting the mission accomplished. Sometimes when it runs beyond five o'clockThey're going to be team players. They understand that there's no eye in team. After General Mixon left military service, he continued to support and work for veterans with disabilities, mental health challenges, and has worked extensively in nonprofit work. Two organizations he is privileged to be a part of are:

I'd like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People.Sometimes leading is about putting your head down and just.getting.it.done.It sucks, it's not easy, but sometimes leaders need to dig deep and get it done. We've all heard the term, grit. And we've all heard how we need grit to help us dig deep. But how can we use grit?In this episode, you'll hear from David Fivecoat, an executive coach, author, entrepreneur, and US Army veteran who will talk about his experiences with grit and how emerging leaders can use grit to get.it.done.Trench Leadership: A Podcast From the Front is humbled to have been listed in the Top 20 for Best Canadian Leadership-themed podcasts in 2021.Reviews are the best way for us to know what we are doing right, what we are doing wrong, and what we should talk about in the future, so please click on the links below and let us know if this episode was helpful. Russia's Invasion of Ukraine disproves many recent predictions about the future of war. This includes the predictions about the death of the law of war. The perception of the legitimacy of war depends in large part on seemingly ancient notions of Jus Ad Bellum and Jus in Bello. The war in Ukraine shows that legitimacy, or loss of legitimacy, has serious consequences. Bridges — after a rewarding 30-year career as a military attorney in the US Army Judge Advocate General's Corps. Mark is a recognized expert in military justice and criminal litigation and his law practice is exclusively focused on legal representation of Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen who are under military investigation, facing adverse action, or pending trial by court-martial. During his military career, Mark served as the US Army's Chief Trial Judge, with a combined ten years of service as a trial judge presiding over court-martial trials. Mark also had the privilege of serving as the Staff Judge Advocate for the 25th Infantry Division & US Army, Hawaii, where he served as principal legal advisor to the Division Commander and supervised one of the Army's largest legal offices. He also had the privilege to teach as an Associate Professor in the Department of Law at the US Military Academy at West Point. One of Mark's more interesting assignments came when he was a Major, assigned to the newly formed Office of Chief Defense Counsel, Office of Military Commissions. This was the office established soon after the 9/11 attacks to defend detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, pursuant to President George W. Bush's military order establishing military commissions for the first time since World War II. Mark and his colleagues successfully challenged the military commissions system established by the President in cases before the US Supreme Court. https://www.militarycriminaldefender.com/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ferah-ozbek/message
In this podcast I had the honor of interviewing Major General (retired) David Rubenstein. Among the many duties of his career, General Rubenstein was the commander of the Army Medical Department Center and School, which was the unit where I was an instructor before I retired from the Army, and he was also the chief of the Medical Service Corps, the Army branch that I served in for 23 years. Although I did not work directly with him on active duty, I can say that General Rubenstein was one of the most respected Medical Department generals I knew of during my career. While I only saw him at a distance while we were on active duty, over the last several years I have had the opportunity to get to know him post-retirement through our mutual interest in health administration education, and we had corresponded regularly about my RWL newsletter, so it was a real pleasure to get to interview him about his remarkable career.
