A Missouri police lieutenant faces charges of misdemeanor animal abuse after the death of his K-9 partner, Horus, a nearly 2-year-old German Shepherd, who died of heat exposure after being left in a patrol vehicle for hours in June 2024. The Savannah Police Department's K-9 unit, equipped with an advanced safety system designed to protect the dog, had its safeguards deactivated at the time of the incident, according to a probable cause statement reviewed by PEOPLE. The incident unfolded on June 20, when Lieutenant Daniel R. Zeigler contacted his police chief shortly before 6 p.m. to report that Horus, who had worked an overnight shift with him, had died. However, further investigation revealed that K-9 Horus had been left inside the police vehicle since the end of their shift at 4:49 a.m., leading to his death from heat exposure, as outlined in charging documents. The vehicle was equipped with the AceK9 system, a precautionary feature designed to prevent heat-related deaths by activating the vehicle's horn, rolling down windows, and turning on fans when temperatures exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit. However, the system had been manually turned off, investigators determined. “The deactivation of the AceK9 system directly contributed to the death of K-9 Horus by removing a safeguard to prevent such an incident,” Highway Patrol Officer Justin S. Johnson wrote in the probable cause statement. The probable cause statement recounts that a neighbor saw Horus's body near the vehicle that evening and described Zeigler as being visibly upset, “flipping out” and “yelling in disbelief,” claiming that he thought he had brought Horus inside after their shift. Later that night, during Horus's burial, Zeigler reportedly told Police Chief Dave Vincent, "It's my fault." This admission was later corroborated by a witness present at the burial, according to the documents. A key part of the investigation included a test conducted six days after Horus's death to assess whether the AceK9 system had been functioning properly. Investigators parked the K-9 vehicle in direct sunlight with the ignition off, allowing the interior temperature to rise. As expected, once the temperature hit 90 degrees Fahrenheit, the system activated—rolling down windows, sounding the horn, and turning on a fan. This confirmed that the system was fully operational on the day of the incident but had been manually disabled. Temperatures in the area on June 20 reached a high of 88 degrees, making it a dangerous situation for any animal left in a hot vehicle for an extended period. Zeigler had been with K-9 Horus since the dog's arrival at the Savannah Police Department in February 2021, following an eight-week training program funded by community donations. Horus had quickly become a valuable asset to the department, working alongside Zeigler to patrol the streets. The tragedy has raised questions about negligence and responsibility, especially considering the vehicle's advanced safety features. Zeigler's decision to turn off the AceK9 system directly resulted in Horus's death, and he now faces a misdemeanor animal abuse charge. Zeigler's future with the Savannah Police Department remains uncertain, and his case will proceed in court as the community mourns the loss of a dedicated K-9 officer. #K9Horus #AnimalAbuse #PoliceDogDeath #DanielZeigler #MissouriPolice #HeatExposure #K9SafetySystems Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Kelli Crigler is a Police Lieutenant working within the Southern California area. Kelli has been a police officer for 18-years; two of those years as an unsworn police officer aide. For almost the last four years of her career, she's been the Police Lieutenant of her current department. This episode is a big one. We dive into everything from Kelli's early years growing up, childhood trauma and removing her mom from her life, to how and why she became a police officer, and the struggles of women in law enforcement (especially one in command). We also dive deep into the poor light shined on law enforcement because of excessive use of force, the defunding of police departments, how officers can change their public perception, over populated prisons, community policing, budget cuts, and so much more.Regardless of your viewpoints on police officers and policing within the United States, I hope all will give this entire episode an unbiased listen to hear directly from an individual that has been on the front lines as a police officer for nearly 20-years. I wanted this episode to be as unbiased as possible and, hopefully, the questions and conversations had here can shed some perspective on policing and how both sides (civilians and officers) can improve the relationship and close the divide. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on July 30th 2023 ANDY TATE who we're welcoming today is a fan of the show, and got in touch with me with a whole list of exciting suggestions of subjects for shows we might want to do on VISION ON SOUND, so it only seemed fair to invite him along and talk to him about some of them. And what a fun guest he turned out to be, as I think you'll discover over the next hour, in which, after a bit of a preamble in which we talk about some of his earliest TV memories, we tackle one of the subjects taken from his list of suggestions, a TV topic which is very close to his heart, and talk about one of his favourite TV series, COLUMBO, a series with its roots forged in the very furnace of American television. Created by RICHARD LEVINSON and WILLIAM LINK, who would also go on to create MURDER SHE WROTE, COLUMBO was apparently inspired in part by both PORFIRY PETROVICH in DOSTOEVSKYs CRIME AND PUNISHMENT, and G K CHESTERTON'S FATHER BROWN, and evolved out an episode from the early 1960s anthology series THE CHEVY MYSTERY SHOW called ENOUGH ROPE, which featured BERT FREED in the role of the Detective, and then transformed into a stage play called PRESCRIPTION: MURDER, which was then adapted into a TELEVISION MOVIE in 1968 starring PETER FALK which acted as an unofficial Pilot episode for the television series which later became so iconic. A second pilot RANSOM FOR A DEAD MAN followed in March 1971, before the series proper began in September 1971 as part of the NBC WEDNESDAY MYSTERY MOVIE strand in which three detective series would be broadcast in the slot on different weeks. Initially COLUMBO alternated with DENNIS WEAVER as the urban cowboy detective McCLOUD, and ROCK HUDSON and SUSAN SAINT JAMES as the crime fighting duo of McMILLAN AND WIFE, with RICHARD BOONE adding to the mix in the second year as HEC RAMSEY, mixing the western formula with forensic investigations. COLUMBO was a POLICE LIEUTENANT attached to the HOMICIDE DEPARTMENT of the LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT, and as such, the homicides he dealt with were often – but not exclusively - committed amongst the glitz and glamour of a Hollywood lifestyle, and, more often than not involved people living at the richer and more privileged end of the American dream. The show was unusual in that the WHODUNNIT aspect was discarded in favour of a HOWDUNNIT, with the murderer often being identified from the outset, and the mystery itself being more about how COLUMBO would trap the criminal into giving themselves away, often after believing that they had committed the perfect crime. COLUMBO himself was famously charming and courteous to everyone he met, and this, alongside his shabby outfit of a battered raincoat worn over a rumpled suit and tie, his choice of a battered old Peugeot to park alongside the high value sports cars owned by the suspects, and his seemingly easily distracted demeanour, all caused the criminals to underestimate him, often right up until the moment when they would fall into the trap he set them, usually accompanied with that phrase that rather became his catchphrase: various variations on “Just one more thing…” Forty-three more episodes of COLUMBO aired across seven seasons in the 1970s, featuring a whole host of celebrity killers who pitted their wits against what they considered to be this shambles of a man. After a break of 12 years, the series was revived in 1989 for a further six editions, and another fourteen films followed across the next fourteen years, with the final – sixty ninth - COLUMBO first airing in 2003. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

This week's guest is a gentleman I had the pleasure of working with at Tucson PD. I first mentioned him in Episode 14 with Stacey Goodman. Richie and I were in Ops South on the morning of 9/11. It was my honor to host him and I learned a few things I hadn't known prior to our interview, like, the fact he started out as a cop in the New York Transit Police. Or the fact that prior to this he had been a craps dealer and DJ in Las Vegas, where he met his beautiful bride!!!Richie was instrumental in bringing a new Police Officers Association (Union) to the agency and he helped move working conditions and pay forward for the agency. Future generations of local cops owe him a debt of gratitude for his tireless work. Please join me in welcoming him to The Squad, I know you're going to enjoy his episode.
Police Lieutenant (ret.) Eric Rosoff, founded the Career Survival Group and has been helping save careers since 2006. His team has coined the term, "You can lose your life on the fire ground, but you can lose your career in the fire house." Eric emphasizes the importance of understanding your department's code of conduct, administrative and the in-the-station expectations just as you would the operational ones. Administrative safety violations are the root of most firefighter personnel actions, terminations, and workplace lawsuits. These are all stressful and costly events that impact morale and public trust. Additionally, administrative safety violations frequently derail the agency's efforts at recruitment and inclusion. "Do your administrative pushups!"
On today's special show, after giving initial thoughts on Trump's indictment, we'll be joined by Tarik “T.K.” Johnson, a 23-year veteran of the Capitol Hill police. He was the officer who evacuated the Senate and House chambers and has now become a whistleblower against Assistant Chief Yogananda Pittman, accusing her of sitting on intel and setting up the officers for failure. Tarik believes that J6 was not an insurrection, but a coup led by corrupt leadership inside the Capitol. He believes that House Republicans need to focus on what she knew, when she knew it, why she refused to respond to Johnson's requests for help evacuating the chambers, and her behavior since the day itself. He connects the dots on how she knew exactly what would happen that day but not only failed to prepare for it, she or others in leadership ordered the confiscation of riot helmets right before J6. She came back!!! Proof that the work I'm doing on this podcast is good and the interviews aren't too much torture! In this episode, we pick back up where we left off. Jen was a Home Invasion Detective who promoted to Sergeant. She describes her experiences as a Sergeant: Patrol, Detectives, Internal Affairs until she is promoted to Lieutenant! She was a Patrol Commander, SWAT, and PIO!I love that she pointed out that the job is not easy, but so many invest their lives to being good at this, even to their own detriment. We've known so many whose personal lives fell apart for the sake of showing up at work in an extraordinary way. That's why I have so much respect for the men and women who prioritize themselves and their families! It's not an easy choice, but it's the correct one, every time! This is one of those things that we always suspected was happening but never quite had the proof. DC Police Lt. Shane Lamont was feeding the Proud Boys all manner of information for months leading up to January 6th… and somehow still has his job. Why has he not been fired? Or charged? Are his previous cases going to be reopened? How did he get introduced to the Proud Boys? Was he a member himself? I've got questions. Let's talk about it! on international news after my Onlyfans page was leaked to my police agency by a former friend of mine who is also a female police officer. Since then, I have taken FMLA leave for mental health reasons and since come to a settlement to retire from the force after 28 years in Law Enforcement. There has been a lot of media coverage around recent spikes in violent crime. A LOT. Even though overall crime rates are at historic lows, many people are feeling unsafe and want solutions. Most people also want to tackle our country's incarceration crisis while addressing public safety concerns. As it turns out, these things go hand in hand. Join us for this special live event between Lemonada Media and The Just Trust to hear from executive directors of three leading criminal justice reform advocacy organizations – a former Police Lieutenant, a former federal prosecutor, and a social worker focused on drug law reform – about the intersection of safety and criminal justice reform in this moment. We'll ask questions like “what really makes communities safer?” (hint - it's not more prisons), and “what myths do we need to bust about justice reform?” The bottom line is that the criminal justice system impacts all of us, and we all have a role to play in making it better – in every city, in every state, regardless of who is in the White House or the Governors' mansions. Join us as we break down some of the most urgent strategies for change, and how unlikely allies across sectors are leading the way. This is a sponsored episode by The Just Trust, a philanthropic venture that is 100% dedicated to powering criminal justice reform, state by state and across the country. On this episode I have a chat with Scott Tillema. As a relatively junior Police Constable I remember watching Scotts Ted Talk based around Crisis Negotiation and the four principles: Understanding. Timing. Delivery. Respect. Scott is an active duty police officer who operates in one of the largest municipal SWAT teams in the US. He is also an FBI trained Negotiator, keynote speaker and a senior member of the Negotiations Collective. I think this position of being an active duty police officer and also engaging in the private sector puts Scott in an incredible position of having direct up to date real world experiences to draw upon. I have utilized Scott's principles in times of crisis and critical situations during my time as a Police Officer and Close Protection Operative. However, I really believe that the art of negotiations is a critical skillset in order to have the useful/productive/meaningful dialogue. Scott, thank you for your service and taking the time to share your experiences with me and my listeners! Thanks everyone for tuning in! This is Episode 11 of @lets_grab_a_cup podcast. Naval Officer, Police Lieutenant, and President of the Police Officers Association. This is an interview with James Foster (who goes by Jimmy) who spent a lifetime of service to his community and to those he worked around. Jimmy Foster grew up in Long Beach, CA in a family of Law Enforcement Officers. His father and brothers all joined the Long Beach Police Department and Jimmy ultimately followed in those footsteps and joined the Long Beach Police Department after an 8 year career in the Navy. As a young man, Jimmy was accepted into the Naval Academy and graduated as an Officer, ultimately placed in command of his own crew. Jimmy had one idea on how to influence the people he worked with, and that was to show them how much he cared about them. This mindset continued throughout his career and on into Law Enforcement. Jimmy is known as one of the best leaders in the Long Beach organization because he always put others' first and provided mentorship through respect. I had the pleasure of sharing with Jimmy just how much so many of the people he worked with were influenced by him and the way he treated each and every one of them. It's not every day that you get to hear the impact you have made, and I am proud to call Jimmy a mentor and a friend. This podcast is brought to you by Sturgeon Wellness (Intentionality, Authenticity, Resiliency). I am fully invested in the idea of a transparent, authentic, and intentional type of leader. I believe that we can do better for those we serve and those who serve along-side us. Let's step up by being vulnerable. Vulnerability is the true super-power. "Holiday Affair" 1949 is an enjoyable film for the holiday season. There is excellent writing by Isobel Lennart, believable characters, solid production values and first-rate direction by Don Hartman. Actually these elements combine to make this a movie worth watching any time of the year.Among the believable characters is Robert Mitchum as Steve Mason the future builder of boats, Janet Leigh as Connie Ennis the loving mother of Timmy Ennis her 6 1/2 year old son played by Gordon Gebert, Wendell Corey as Carl Davis the well known Lawyer and possibly Connie's future husband, Henry O'Neill as department store owner Mr. Crowley, Harry Morgan as the patient but perplexed Police Lieutenant and a myriad of other cast members that do a superb job adding to the film's story. When released in 1949 the movie was not well regarded nor a financial success; however, in recent years it has become a holiday classic. Our best wishes for the season! Here’s the IMDB page for “Holiday Affair”Up next, “Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House”
QUOTES 02:55 "Law enforcement is a lot like any high-level sports activity. You're going to make critical decisions under great stress, often under physical duress." 06:27 "Deadly force is defined as that amount of force that cause serious bodily injury or death. Serious bodily injury. Multiple assailants attacking you is deadly force. Someone striking your head with any object, including fists, can be deadly force." 09:32 "Criminality comes from a lot of things, a lot of motivations, partly because of the nature of mankind and that's one of things we're not allowed to talk about is the nature of evil. People can be evil. People can be misguided." 15:38 "Our primary job is dealing with victims and people who are in crisis, not dealing with criminals. And that's what people don't understand." 17:02 "We're seeing part of chaos in these communities is that we're going to see people allowed to break laws to aggravated assaults, to do vandalisms, and they just turn their backs to them. They call it a protest. A riot's not a protest." ----------------------------- SUMMARY In this episode of the National Police Association Podcast, Sgt. Betsy Smith interviews Dave Smith aka JD Buck Savage, former police lieutenant and trainer for “Winning Mind Seminars.” Dave discusses how athletic training conditions police in the face of deadly force, criminality's roots in culture and human nature, and the primary duty of police in healing communities. Dave also comments on weak links with officials of the executive branch aggregating laws and prosecutors who refuse to prosecute criminals. ------------------------------ HIGHLIGHTS 02:22 Using athletic training to hone police decision-making 07:48 Criminality: A taboo subject rooted in nature and nurture 11:14 Defunding and re-imagining policing negatively affect citizens 16:23 Weak links in law enforcement are in the executive branch 18:32 Eliminating "warrior training" is a mistake ------------------------------ RESOURCES National Police Association

In March 2019, the Narada Radio Company was invited to perform at the Rockport Little Theatre, Rockport, Texas. The choice of show was mine, and I had to hold auditions from local actors, rather than choose my own regular Narada players. As a result of this, two old theatre friends appeared at auditions, and my show was blessed, because I had my "Norma Desmond". We performed only three shows, and got only two recordings, from which I offer what you see here. It's interesting to note that we created more than 90 live sound effects in this production, many of which I invented myself. Our audiences enjoyed watching our two SFX ladies creating the sounds. The script came originally from the "Lux Radio Theatre" adaptation, but I added dialog from the screenplay here and there; and I wrote new commercials to replace the Lux spots, but for some reason the commercials didn't record very well, so I cut them out of the final recording. The show overall doesn't suffer from this loss, however, and in fact cuts down your total listening time. Please enjoy this presentation of BIG STAGE AUDIO THEATRE! Today on The Neil Haley Network's Thinking Through The Trees Show, The Total Tutor Neil Haley and Michael Chappie will interview Celebrity Armen Garo. We will discuss his career and The Sopranos 20th Anniversary Live. In 2006 Garo was cast in Showtimes's Peabody Award winning original drama series “Brotherhood” as the Police Lieutenant. This was the first time he worked with creator/writer Blake Masters, Executive Producer Henry Bromell, and director Edward Bianchi. He was brought back in the second season as Det. Lt. Gillardino working with Anabeth Gish, Jason Isaacs, Billy Smith, and Brian Scannell. That same year he had the good fortune of being cast as one of the two Providence Gangsters in Warner Brothers' “The Departed” directed by Martin Scorsese. The picture won 4 out of the 5 nominations for an Academy Award (Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Achievement in Directing, Best Achievement in Editing, and Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay). He worked with, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and fellow Providence Gangster John Cenatiempo. After being seen in “The Departed” Mr. Garo was invited to read for the role of Salvatore “Coco” Cogliano for what was to be the Final Season of the Emmy Awarding winning “The Sopranos”. He was hired as the menacing “Coco”, whose actions with Meadow Soprano (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) earned him a non-consensual dental appointment at no charge with her father, Tony (James Gandolfini). Later that year he appeared as one of two police officers on a stake-out trying to catch the cat burglar in Walt Disney's “Underdog” only to have his doughnut taken and coffee spilled. He also made a brief appearance in “The Game Plan” as a Cabbie with Madison Bettis and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Across the country, law enforcement officers are under attack. Politics plays a major role in the disrespect for the work police officers do. As a consequence, we see thousands of them walking away from their jobs. Yet, we know we need them to be safe. Without police officers, we would live in a state of nature where the bad guys would always have the upper-hand. Joining me today to discuss these issues is Lt. Randy Sutton. Randy Sutton is a retired Police Lieutenant with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, a nationally known commentator on Law Enforcement issues, a speaker, an actor on the big and small screen and the bestselling author of four books on policing and The Power of Legacy. He is also the founder of the Wounded Blue Foundation and has a daily radio show, BLUE LIVES RADIO on the America Out Loud Network. There are so many crimes in today's headlines, they can make your head spin. We all want to know 'whodunit' and why. But, before we can solve one crime, another one catches our attention. And after consuming countless hours of shows like Criminal Minds and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, we think we're all super-sleuths. Today's guest, Randy Sutton, is a real super-sleuth - he doesn't just play one on TV. He's a retired Police Lieutenant, Host of Blue Lives Radio, Founder of The Wounded Blue and author of 4 books. Today, he and Forensic Psychiatrist, host, Dr. Carole, try to solve 3 of the crimes that currently puzzle us most: Why did Chris Watts murder his wife and, allegedly, his children? Who murdered Mollie Tibbetts and why? What's up with Asia Argento: from alleged victim of Harvey Weinstein to alleged child abuser, herself? We take you inside these criminal minds and the investigations that are unfolding, to illuminate some clues you may have missed.
Takeaways – A podcast about learning from the wisdom of others
I am blessed to be around remarkable people. There are always Takeaways to learn. That is what I am sharing on this podcast. Takeaways – Life. Lessons. Learned. explores learning from the wisdom of others. Dori Koren is a Police Lieutenant with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Dori joined the force while still in college. He promoted to Detective at the youngest possible age. He was the youngest Sargent on the force and is now the youngest Lieutenant. His section is called Technical Operations, which is responsible for deploying advanced technologies to combat crime and terrorism. They get to play with stuff like gunshot detection and facial recognition technology. In every category that he engages, Dori sets out to break the mold, and to defy the odds. What gives someone that type of drive and ambition? What does it mean to be “forward leaning”? Why is commitment to family so important? We talk about all of those Takeaways in this episode. On a personal note, have you ever met someone that made you realize that you can dig deeper than you currently are? Someone that made you feel like the best effort that you give is not all that you are capable of giving. That someone for me is Dori. From the first time he taught me a step routine, to the many speeches and essays we wrote together, Dori inspired me to hold myself to a higher standard. And it’s not just me. Anyone who holds company with Dori pursues and achieves more than what they did before. But Dori doesn’t get the credit for this. Not all of it anyway. Listen in to hear a remarkable story of defying the odds, breaking the mold and establishing a foundation for everyone to follow… and I’m not just talking about Dori doing those things.
