Erich Fromm, the prominent twentieth-century public intellectual and psychoanalyst, was recognized for his courageous stand against fascism, racism, and human destructiveness. Until now, however, little has been known about the extent to which Fromm's personal experience of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust shaped his outlook and work.In Edge of Catastrophe: Erich Fromm, Fascism and the Holocaust (Oxford 2024), Roger Frie introduces for the first time the unpublished Holocaust correspondence in Fromm's family. The letters provide insight into Fromm's life as a German-Jewish refugee and help us to understand the effect of Nazi Germany's racial terror on Fromm and his German-Jewish family. In the aftermath of the genocide, Fromm returned again and again to the themes of responsibility, social justice, and human solidarity, yet without revealing his own experience. As this book powerfully shows, Fromm's social, political, and psychological writings take on new meaning in light of the traumas and tragedies that he and his family experienced. The image of Fromm that emerges from this book enriches our understanding of what it means to be both a social critic and practicing psychologist. In light of the racial hatred and antisemitism we see today, Frie demonstrates that a politics of engagement and a psychology of well-being go hand in hand. Frie suggests that there is much to be learned from the urgency in Fromm's writings as we seek to respond to the social crises and the renewed threat of fascism in our present age. Roger Frie is Professor of Psychoanalysis and Education at the University of Vienna in Austria, Affiliate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia, and Professor Emeritus at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. He is also Faculty and Supervisor at the William Alanson White Institute of Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis and Psychology, and the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, and associate member of the Columbia University Seminar on Cultural Memory in New York. He is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst in private practice as well as a trained historian and social philosopher and brings both of these perspectives to bear in his publications. He is author most recently Wounds of Silence: Legacies of Genocide and Racial Violence (Oxford 2026), Edge of Catastrophe: Erich Fromm, Fascism and the Holocaust (Oxford 2024) and Not in My Family: German Memory and Responsibility after the Holocaust (Oxford 2017). His most recent edited book is Culture, Politics and Race in the Making of Interpersonal Psychoanalysis (Routledge, 2022, with Pascal Sauvayre). He is additionally co-editor of Contemporary Psychoanalysis. Your host for this episode, Ben Greenberg, PsyD is a psychoanalytic psychologist and founding director of both the Center for Dynamic Practice (CFDP) in Santa Fe, NM and Southwestern Alliance for Psychoanalytic Psychology (SWAPP). Jakob Valdemar Olsen prædikede over temaet frihed.

Solmaz Khorsand in conversation with Friederike Frieß, Amb. Alexander Kmentt and Nikolai SokovARE WE READY FOR THE NEW NUCLEAR AGE? The world has entered a dangerous new phase in dealing with nuclear risks, “the third nuclear age” driven by an often referenced and poorly defined “great power competition” as Alexandra Bell, President and CEO of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists put it. There are persistent nuclear threats from Putin's regime and by North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un's alarming missile tests. Furthermore, US President Donald Trump is calling for renewed testing of America's nuclear infrastructure. What will the world look like when, as IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi predicts, there are 20 to 25 nuclear-armed states instead of the current nine, and they flex their muscles more and more? What cards do the proponents of a rule-based world order still have to convince nuclear-hungry leaders of the threat posed by these weapons, which they brandish like toys? What is the future of non-proliferation treaties and diplomacy?Friederike Frieß, physicist and senior researcher at BOKU's Institute for Safety and Risk Sciences and member of the UN Scientific Panel on the Effects of Nuclear WarAmb. „Man kriegt je ni mol mehr'n Platz bi'n Tähnarzt“, hett Frie'ch Merz in September 2023 noch seggt, weil dor to veel Asylbewerbers rümsitten doht, de op Stootskosten 'n niedet Gebiss kriegt. Na jo, so as dat utsüht, entspannt sick dat bald weller mit de Tähnarzt-Termine. Overs dat hett ook Vördeele: Wenn man Piep schmöökt, kann man de Piep scheun in so'n Tähnlücke klemm‘. Wenn man to'n Bispeel 'n frische Niere bruukt, denn mutt man de Oparatschoon tokünfti sülms betohn. De niede Niere mutt man natüüli ook sülms mit no't Krankenhuus bringen. Dor sünd sick all vun blau bet swatt denn mitmol weller greun. Kiek, Eenigkeit is doch so eenfach, wenn man blots över't richtige Thema snackt… In düssen Sinn

Today's guest and I bonded on social media back in 2020 after he listened to my first few podcast episodes. Tim Frie is an educator, mental health & health equity activist, and doctoral student exploring trauma-informed care and undoing toxic wellness. He is also the founder of Clove Health, a medical communications company that designs inclusive, culturally sensitive and trauma-informed clinical resources and patient education. On this episode, we dive into topics like what the wellness industry really is, what really contributes to your overall well-being, and how men are sometimes left out of the conversations when it comes to mental health. It's a great episode. Enjoy! Episode Description and Show Notes: In this episode of the HUMAN First podcast, Dr. Courtney discusses: Tim describes his small town upbringing and how that shaped who he is today He realized recently that his obsession with fitness and health was actually an ED Grieving the time you lost over not knowing what's going on within you How to balance needing more from your parents and knowing they did what they could It's not REQUIRED to forgive people in order to love yourself What exactly is the wellness industry? Healthcare and Wellness industries have differences but BOTH are for profit Disordered Eating can be a big part of the fitness industry The most common misconceptions about eating disorders The educational standards for learning about ED in a masters degree is very limited It's not your fault if you don't succeed in a diet or program There are HUNDREDS of factors that contribute to our health, diet and fitness are less than 10% You don't need to stop everything you're doing, but think critically about WHY you are doing it How do we solve a problem we didn't cause? What would the wellness industry look like if it was focused on community and society? The new representation in marketing isn't translating to actual policy or change Men can and do also have mental health issues and ED Online communities can be an very helpful tool for recovery and discovery You can find Tim Frie online at: IG: https://www.instagram.com/thetimfrie/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/timfrie/ Learn more about Tim Frie's offerings at: https://timfrie.carrd.co/ Dr. Courtney Tracy's additional offerings: Instagram: @the.truth.doctor TikTok: @the.truth.doctor Twitter: @_thetruthdoctor Exclusive YouTube Show: The Truth Doctor Show Healing texts: USA & Canada (424) 228-9525 Website: www.thetruthdoctor.com This podcast is not therapy and does not provide personalized clinical advice.
