CFO Thought Leader
1190: Fixing What Growth Tries to Hide | Jaylene Kunze, LegitScript

CFO Thought Leader

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 7, 2026 49:42

When Jaylene Kunze was asked to help rebuild a struggling subsidiary in the United Kingdom, she packed up her family and moved overseas with her nine-month-old daughter. The assignment was one more example of the type of challenge that would come to define her career. Rather than following a traditional finance path, Kunze gravitated toward what she calls “the fixer” role, stepping into situations where businesses needed operational repair, process improvement, or organizational change. That mindset began to take shape through compliance and Sarbanes-Oxley work. While many viewed the documentation requirements as burdensome, Kunze tells us the process forced her to understand “the intersection of people, process, and systems” behind the numbers. It gave her visibility into how businesses actually operated and prepared her for increasingly complex leadership roles. Her appetite for transformation became especially valuable when Tendril transitioned from venture-capital ownership to private-equity ownership. Kunze tells us the company ultimately combined six businesses into what became Uplight. As CFO, she oversaw diligence and integration while helping absorb five acquisitions within seven months. The experience delivered lasting lessons. Culture, she tells us, matters more than many leaders expect. Different organizations often make decisions in entirely different ways, creating friction that financial models cannot predict. She also learned the cost of pushing too hard. Her team successfully completed aggressive integrations, but Kunze tells us she underestimated the human toll and would invest more heavily in staffing and support if given the opportunity again.Today, those lessons continue to shape how she approaches leadership, growth, and change.

What happens when we treat AI not just as a tool, but as a character? In this episode of Off Center, guest host Jill Walker Rettberg sits down with Lukas Wilde to explore the evolution of AI personas. Drawing on transmedia theory and the "Eliza effect," Wilde breaks down three ways we encounter AI: as fictional robots (like Star Trek's Data), as co-authors in creative media, and as interactive agents in our daily lives. From theme park mascots to "multiverses" of chatbot inconsistency, they discuss how our deep-seated habits of fictional role-play shape how we perceive machine intelligence.

Send us a textOne thing I must say about Brian and every guest who has graced me with their time over the years is...I've never once had to ask them to drop any pretense and be their authentic selves and that is what seems to catch my listener's interest and draw them in. When people just "be who they are" and tell the stories that impacted them both personally and professionally. I appreciate Brian for having the courage to join me, even when he told me he wasn't sure he could.Across the span of about 30 years he served both on a national level, in the US Navy, and then at home with the Pima County Sheriff's Department. Heart pounding chases, engulfed family homes, and a mix of all the calls and situations he handled while trying to keep the community safe and the bad guys behind bars.He told me that he wanted to neatly capture his career in three episodes (1.

The conversation spans current applications such as ambient scribe technology, predictive analytics, and AI-driven patient triage, as well as long-term possibilities like agentic AI and robotics. Drs. Kunze and Pareek also examine challenges around trust, explainability, and research integrity, offering insights into how clinicians and data scientists can collaborate to ensure AI tools are both safe and impactful. This episode previews the upcoming special edition of HSS Journal, guest edited by Dr. Kunze, focused on artificial intelligence and digital health in orthopedic practice.

Three decades later and Disney's 33rd animated feature remains one of its most controversial for its historical inaccuracies and racial depictions. Yet Pocahontas also remains a celebrated film for its score and songs, garnering Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz a pair of Academy Awards. On this episode of Notably Disney, host Brett Nachman leads a discussion of Pocahontas. Joining Brett are two guests who have examined Disney work from a scholarly sense: Dr. Peter Kunze, Assistant Professor of Communication at Tulane University, who was on the podcast a couple of years ago to discuss his book Staging a Comeback, as well as Dr. Michelle Anya Anjirbag-Reeve, Affiliated Researcher at the University of Antwerp. Michelle and Pete examine the roles of race, culture, language, and more in this thoughtful dialogue about how Pocahontas fits within the Disney Renaissance period and in the company more broadly. Email Pete at pkunze@tulane.edu and check out his book about Disney musicals - Staging a Comeback  - on the Rugters University Press website. Bleibt Breitenreiter dann Trainer in Hannover? Jessic Ngankam?

In the early 1980s, Walt Disney Productions was struggling, largely bolstered by the success of its theme parks. Within fifteen years, however, it had become one of the most powerful entertainment conglomerates in the world. Staging a Comeback: Broadway, Hollywood, and the Disney Renaissance (Rutgers University Press, 2023) by Dr. Peter Kunze argues that far from an executive feat, this impressive turnaround was accomplished in no small part by the storytellers recruited during this period. Drawing from archival research, interviews, and textual analysis, Dr. Kunze examines how the hiring of theatrically trained talent into managerial and production positions reorganized the lagging animation division and revitalized its output. By Aladdin, it was clear that animation—not live action—was the center of a veritable “renaissance” at Disney, and the animated musicals driving this revival laid the groundwork for the company's growth into Broadway theatrical production. The Disney Renaissance not only reinvigorated the Walt Disney Company but both reflects and influenced changes in Broadway and Hollywood more broadly. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Historically, ACL repair resulted in poor outcomes and this procedure fell out of favor while ACL reconstruction became the gold-standard surgical approach for a torn ACL. Recently, thanks in part to the advent of more modern techniques, ACL repair has regained interest in the Sports Medicine community as a potentially viable option in certain situations that may provide advantages in comparison to ACL reconstruction. To this point, the literature comparing these two surgeries with modern techniques has been heterogenous in terms of quality and design, and results have been mixed. Drs. Kyle Kunze, MD and Benedict Nwachukwu, MD, MBA and their team from Hospital of Special Surgery (HSS) bring us this systematic review and meta-analysis to cull the best literature available. Their findings indicate that, while ACL repair may have an evolving role in our toolbox, its failure rate remains higher than that of ACL reconstruction and thus should be approached with caution.
