In the latest episode of FWPA's WoodChat podcast, listeners are invited to explore the transformative role of nutrition in enhancing forest productivity across Australia. This insightful episode features researcher John McGrath, who shares insights about three pivotal projects, with the potential to shape the long-term future of forest management for maximum yield and productivity. The discussion kicks off with the hardwood yield gap project aimed at identifying forest management actions to help reduce the hardwood yield gap. This work successfully helped to recalibrate the Agricultural Production System sIMulator (APSIM) model for hardwood productivity. This tool offers a better understanding of environmental limitations to maximising hardwood yield, and invaluable guidance for forestry professionals. Moving on to the softwood nutrition project, McGrath highlights the long-term collection of historical date to enable the extension of the pre-existing South Australian predictive tool ProFert into Western Australia. The recalibrated tool is already helping forest managers in WA to better predict fertiliser response in softwood plantations. Similarly, a project was also conducted with a focus on hardwood, and the complex interactions between climate, temperature, soil, and nutrient responses All projects emphasise how tailored nutrition strategies and an understanding of additional external variables are essential for optimising tree growth, yield and profitability across diverse environments. Additionally, the episode also includes details of how Wespine - the largest sawmill in WA – supported the work that resulted in the recalibrated version of ProFert for WA. During the episode, Resource Manager Brad Barr shares how the initiative will help address long-term challenges such as the ongoing impact of bushfires, while simultaneously improving resource efficiency. For those invested in forestry progression, this episode of the WoodChat podcast is a must-listen.

In this episode, Troy asked Oscar Langoulant, of We Assist Co based in Melbourne, Australia, the final five questions: Oscar emphasizes that the hardest thing about growing a small business is learning to say "no" to opportunities that may seem financially appealing in the short term but do not align with the true value and sustainability of the business. He advises business owners to focus on long-term growth and charge what their goods or services are truly worth, even if it means selling higher-priced packages. Trusting in the value they provide will yield positive results and attract customers who appreciate that value. Oscar recommends "You, Inc." by John McGrath, which provides valuable insights into a new perspective. Additionally, he mentions "Playing to Win" by Roger Martin, the former CEO of Procter and Gamble, which discusses strategy and decision-making, mindset, and personal growth. Oscar suggests the GASB Podcast and the "Neil Patel Podcast," which likely cover marketing and business-related topics. He also enjoys "Living 4D" with Paul Chek, and although he focuses on learning Chinese currently, he encourages others to explore podcasts that align with their interests and professional development goals. Uber and Upwork are valuable tools for outsourcing tasks to cost-effective freelancers. Additionally, Google offers a wealth of resources for website development, SEO, and other aspects of running an online business. Utilizing Google's technical documents and the Facebook ad library can provide valuable insights into competitors' strategies. Finally, Oscar's advice to himself on day one would be to charge more for the goods or services provided. He realized the importance of valuing his offerings appropriately, trusting in their worth, and not undervaluing his business. Charging what the business truly deserves contributes to long-term success and growth. Book a 20-minute Growth Chat with Troy Trewin to see if you qualify for our upcoming course. Allan Little takes us on a journey into Scotland's recent history. Fifty years ago a radical theatrical event captured the nation's state of political and social flux, and helped fuel a growing debate about devolution and independence. As Scotland once more considers its future place in the UK and Europe, what part did 7:84 theatre company's The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil play in shaping attitudes in the decades since? John McGrath's play was first performed in April 1973 at a conference in Edinburgh called ‘What Kind of Scotland?' The audience of academics, activists and writers had gathered to debate Scotland's economic and political future at a time when nationalism was on the rise and concern was growing about the fair distribution of North Sea oil revenues. The play charted the exploitation of Scotland's natural resources, starting with the Highland Clearances of the 18th and 19th centuries, when crofters were forcibly evicted from their homes to make way for more profitable Cheviot sheep. The Stag refers to the later commercialisation of deerstalking and grouse shooting for the benefit of landowners on large Highland estates. As for the oil – North Sea reserves had only recently been discovered when the play was written 50 years ago. 7:84 believed the windfall profits from oil and gas would fall into the hands of American corporations. The show went on the road, playing at schools and community halls across the Highlands, sometimes to as few as a dozen people. Many audience members had never been to see a play before. They were farmers and fisherfolk, and often the direct descendants of families who had suffered in the Clearances. In the north-east, the show resonated with communities whose lives were rapidly changing because of the burgeoning North Sea oil boom. While many were excited by the prosperity and opportunity oil would bring, others feared that Scotland's resources would once more be plundered, this time by American multinationals and the Westminster exchequer. Through archive sources and fresh new interviews with cast members, historians, campaigners and writers, Allan explores the ways in which The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black Black Oil influenced not just the politics of the time but cultural perceptions of Scotland and Scottishness. Borderlands is an experimental attempt to create space for people with different labels. Many who come and organise the event come from within the Christian faith tradition, Catholic and Protestant. But it also is for those who are from the borderlands of faith. It's a space that seeks to welcome and include the presence and voices of those outside the belief tradition of Christianity. It is trying to be a safe place at a time when many people are looking for spaces of gathering, belonging and a faith that speaks of doubt as well as hope, of values as well as belief. The event typically includes reflections, stories, music and discussion on the public issues facing our society. In November we included 3 people sharing and 2 musicians. The musicians were Maria Nickolay and John McGrath. In addition Jenn Clark, Azadeh Sobout and Fr Martin Magill spoke.

That's enough about how great you all are - onto my question. For the 8+ years I've been wood working I've constantly  heard that you should lightly spray your project with water to raise the grain and sand back before applying finish.  So my question is what's the advantage of using water to raise the grain?  Why not apply a light coat of Shellac or poly to raise the grain and then sand back and you're a coat of finish further on?  Is there any advantage to using water? Thanks again for everything you do. Regards, John McGrath, Houston, TX 3) Hey Guys, love listening to your podcast while in the shop. As an Asian American who does woodworking, really appreciate seeing, and hearing, from other Asian Americans like Huy who share the same interest in this space. My question for you guys: I am making a round dining table. The top will be glued up walnut planks with a 51 inch diameter. The base will be pedestal style base with a diameter of around 22 inches. It will be constructed out of bent plywood (using kerf relief cuts and veneering the outside with walnut) and hollow inside except for some cross braces for rigidity. I plan on sealing the bottom with either (1) a 22 inch diameter plywood( or solid wood) base to cover the bottom and add weights inside the base to make sure the top doesn't tip over or (2) a larger than 22" diameter base. My questions is if I do the first option, is there a calculation as to minimum weight is needed to make sure the solid walnut top of 51" won't tip over? Or if I do option 2, how large of a bottom base to do I need to prevent tip over? Is there a calculation for that? I think option 1 is a cleaner and preferred look, but I don't want to risk tipping over and crushing a child or a toe. Thanks in advance and look forward to listening to the next podcast. Dennis   Huy 1) Almost done with the nightstands I have been working on and asking questions about the past month. Made from two hand sawn walnut logs I salvaged etc. Out of logs. Drawer front is 1/2" too narrow side to side. Solution is to put a 1/4" edge band on the drawers. Problem solved. But I decided to make it complicated. Want to do 1/2" edge band on the top as well. Should I just glue this on or attempt to make the smallest breadboard ends ever? By my math I would have 1/2" strips- 1/8" shoulder 1/8" peg 1/8" tenon past that and 1/8" on the strip covering it up. Is this necessary, feel like I am making dollhouse furniture here after the shed and 10' long bookshelves I just finished. Edge banding would run across the grain, 14" x 12.5" x .625" (5/8) top, ripped and glued as per my question a month ago, picture below for reference. Tom 2) Thanks for the amazing podcast.    You fellas have answered my questions and were very helpful!  I”m having trouble centering my hollow chisel mortiser.  I used the “X” method.  Mark a horizontal line and then two opposing 45's to get center.  I have used a marking gauge, and kept adjusting till it lands on the same mark.  I then adjust my x and y axis table to hit center, then it's not center.   Any thoughts would be great!  Thanks so much!
