What happens when the very skills that keep an officer alive on the street start quietly dismantling the rest of their life? In this episode, Conrad Weaver sits down with Dr. Kevin Gilmartin—one of the pioneering voices in police psychology—to unpack the hidden physiology of the job: hypervigilance, distrust, adrenaline, cortisol, and the “biological roller coaster” that first responders ride every day. Gilmartin traces the evolution of wellness in public safety—from the early days of operational psychology to the modern shift toward peer support as the true trust-bridge into a resistant culture. But the conversation doesn't stay theoretical. It gets painfully practical: why officers gain weight even without “donuts,” how chronic stress pushes insulin resistance and heart disease, why many departments still treat wellness as optional, and what changes when leadership stops asking for permission and starts building wellness into the job itself. Gilmartin argues that the goal isn't just surviving the career—it's earning a retirement you can actually live. If you lead, serve, or love someone in public safety, this episode will reframe wellness as leadership responsibility—and as a life-or-death commitment to what happens after the shift ends. ABOUT KEVIN GILMARTIN Dr. Kevin Gilmartin is a veteran police psychologist whose career spans the evolution of modern public safety wellness. Mentored early by one of the field's pioneers, he went on to serve agencies across all 50 states and internationally, bringing a rare combination of operational credibility and deep clinical insight. Over decades, he has consulted with departments of every size—from major metropolitan agencies with robust wellness infrastructure to smaller organizations still battling stigma and outdated beliefs. Gilmartin's signature contribution is translating the lived reality of the job into understandable biology: hypervigilance, distrust as officer-safety training, cortisol and glucose cycling, and why off-duty disengagement becomes a slow-moving threat to families, health, and identity. He is also a vocal advocate for peer-driven wellness models and leadership practices that make health unavoidable—because the goal is not simply making it to retirement, but actually being well enough to enjoy it. +++++ ABOUT FIRST RESPONDER WELLNESS SOLUTIONS First Responder Wellness Solutions (FRWS) is on a mission to transform the health and culture of leadership within first responder agencies. We're joined again today by Eoghan Gilmartin to continue our discussion about the government of Pedro Sanchez in Spain. Eoghan is an Irish journalist based in Madrid, a regular contributor to Jacobin, and co-host of the Sobremesa podcast about Spanish politics. In contrast with Greece and Portugal, Spain still has a government today headed by the center left. The Spanish Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez has attracted a lot of interest from the international media for appearing to buck the trend as many European countries shift to the right. He's been unusually outspoken on the subject of Gaza. And Sanchez was the only European leader to directly challenge Donald Trump over his demand for a big increase in military spending. Sanchez feels confident that he will lead the Socialist Party in the next general election, but his government is facing a number of challenges, including a corruption scandal that implicated some of his political allies. Today, we're going back to the early stages of the Sanchez government, before asking whether it has a future in the years to come. Long Reads continues our recent focus on the politics of southern European countries over the last decade. This week and in our next episode, we're looking in detail at what's been happening in Spain. Sanchez may be gaining admirers as well as enemies on the international stage. But his position at home is quite precarious. His governing coalition with the left-wing party Sumar doesn't have a majority in parliament. And some of his political allies have been accused of corruption. Over the next two episodes, Long Reads will concentrate on how Sanchez came to power, what his record in office has been, and whether his government is likely to endure. We discuss the news that Wood's chief executive, Ken Gilmartin, is set to leave and the recent delays announced by both the UK government and the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA). Worley's Fabricio Sousa also swings in past to discuss all things artificial intelligence (AI). This week's episode features Energy Voice's Ryan Duff and Michael Behr, with editor Mark Selby making an appearance in a prerecorded interview. First up, Michael gets us caught up on all things Wood as the beleaguered services giant looks to close its takeover saga with one last twist in the tale, Ken Gilmartin's exit. Admittedly, this might not be the biggest surprise, but what may shock some is his permanent replacement, Iain Torrens, who was initially brought in as interim CFO earlier this year. Next up, we hear from Mark and Fabricio as they discuss what served to be a major theme of the Gastech Exhibition & Conference this year, AI. The pair discuss the role of AI in driving the imminent boom in global power demand – and what that actually means for both energy and related industry. Finally, Ryan and Michael discuss a series of delays that were reported this week. Up first, Deltic's takeover at the hands of Viaro hit a stumbling block as the NSTA overshot its deadline to approve licences changing hands. Also, the Outer Dowsing and Morecambe offshore wind farms were told that the date of their development consent order decisions had been delayed until after next month's budget. There are a lot of moving parts in the energy sector right now, so what does this mean for future mergers and acquisitions in oil and gas and the likelihood of the UK hitting its clean power 2030 targets?

This week I sit down with actor, teacher and overall performance creator @ryangilmartin5876 as we talk about a challenge. Ryan like myself is from a background in small towns and villages but also like me has been and seen plenty of the world. Creating shows and experiences Ryan mixes history, folklore and insight to try and bring more creative opportunities to the world. So this week we talk about the challenge of doing that in smaller and more rural places. Embracing the native homesteads and looking at how places like the East Midlands, Lincolnshire, North Lincolnshire and Humberside (I could keep going) face a challenge with not only finding creative and conceptually forward spaces but how generating those places can be a challenge too. To bring something not purely functional to an area where frivolity is met with suspicion is a challenge and a topic close to my core!I do suggest you check out Ryan and what he's up to. When Courtney Gilmartin walks into a room, her strength and resilience are palpable. Yet her journey to becoming the founder of New Jersey Protective Moms is one woven with the dark threads of domestic violence and the battle scars of a high-conflict divorce. Courtney's story, shared in this episode, is full of raw emotion and legal complexities, yet shines a light on the unsettling truth of emotional abuse and the desperate need for a family court system that understands trauma and puts child safety at the forefront.Courtney's experience with intimate partner violence is a harrowing reminder of how stalking, manipulation, and coercive control can maintain an abuser's grip without leaving a visible mark. What's more, even after the divorce, the specter of her ex-husband loomed large, twisting the family court system to his advantage and dragging their children into the fray. Courtney's story doesn't just expose the emotional and financial desolation faced by survivors; it's a call to action for recognizing the signs of abuse and the imperative of legal reform to protect victims from being re-traumatized by the very system that should defend them.Beyond sharing her personal narrative, Courtney's advocacy work offers a beacon of hope for legislative change. The recent triumph of having coercive control recognized in New Jersey law is just the beginning. Her leadership in the Divorce Coalition's legislative team and her hand in pushing Caden's Law forward demonstrate a path to uniform protection for abuse survivors. Through the empowering resources of New Jersey Protective Moms and her own relentless spirit of support, Courtney Gilmartin isn't just a survivor—she's a warrior for change, providing an arsenal of knowledge and support for those navigating the aftermath of domestic violence.
This episode with Courtney we talk all things, post settlement, intuition, finding therapists, daddy Guise guided as caring father, concept of "you don't have to leave", Erosion and effects of abusive dynamics on children

Join us to explore the challenges of serving diverse audiences and keeping employees focused on the customer through initiatives like a brand manifesto.
Courtney Gilmartin is at the forefront of advocating change within family courts through her organization New Jersey Protective Moms. On this episode, Courtney brings invaluable insights in navigating the Family Court System that resonate not just in New Jersey but across all states. The term "protective mom" might be unfamiliar to some; it refers to mothers who fight tooth and nail within a legal system that often fails to safeguard them or their children against abusers adept at manipulating proceedings.Courtney shed light on how domestic abuse isn't always recognized by those entrusted with justice due to gaps in training regarding coercive control—a subtler form of abuse than physical violence yet equally damaging. In this episode, Alan and Jessica talk about the evolution of Calendly from serving solopreneurs to enterprise organizations, the success factors that have made that shift possible, how she thinks about the RIO and effectiveness of marketing spend, and balancing the need to drive results and be creative through “creative destruction.”. Jessica Gilmartin is an amateur baker, an ex-yogurt mogul, and the new Chief Revenue Officer at the scheduling automation platform Calendly. She took her first marketing job at Dell, which prompted a move to the Bay Area, where she also started and sold a chain of yogurt stores. Before joining Calendly in 2023, Jessica was Head of Revenue Marketing at Asana and had also served as CMO of three high-growth, venture-backed startups, building their global enterprise marketing engines during rapid growth periods. Calendly started with a basic scheduling link for individuals, but business users needed more team features, and enterprise users needed more admin and security features, so the product grew to meet those needs. Jessica tells us they are building for scale but are sure to never lose sight of the individual user's success. Her team is focused on how to tell a complete story with comprehensive features while maintaining simplicity in the product and the messaging. To do that, Jessica and her team have to experiment. Marketing changes all the time, and what worked then will not work now, so marketers have to be creative to drive results. She refers to this as “creative destruction” and encourages her team to make 70–80% of what they are doing every quarter new. However, to make this work, her team must trust that failing is not career-ending as long as they learn from it. Jessica also outlines how her approach to segmenting and communicating expectations around marketing spend facilitates experimentation. AI is a place where many companies are experimenting. However, within their product, the Calendly team sees a huge amount of opportunities they are pursuing, but they are taking a measured approach to keep their users' interests top of mind. Alan and Jessica wrap up by talking about accepting and embracing hard feedback, the importance of listening to her gut feelings, why markets have to learn sales, and the shifts coming from the consumerization of B2B tech. In this episode, you'll learn about:How Calendly developed through user feedbackWhat “creative destruction” is and the culture needed to make it work How Jessica segments out her budget to maximize RIO and the effectiveness Key Highlights:[01:55] A love of baking born out of necessity [03:10] From investment banker to CMO[04:40] Wait… a yogurt shop?[06:20] Where Calendly started and where they are now[08:00] Comprehensive solutions rooted in simplicity[09:20] Success factors for shifting from serving one to many[11:00] ROI and effectiveness of marketing[14:00] Fulfill your commitments and build trust to get more wiggle room. In today's episode of the Marketer's Journey, I interview Jessica Gilmartin, CMO of Calendly. You've probably used Calendly to book meetings, appointments and organize your busy schedule- but how does Jessica juggle their astounding 20 million users? We dive into that today while tracing Jessica's nontraditional route to CMO from investment banking, and explore her two decades' worth of B2B and B2C experience. We also discuss how Jessica is redefining what Calendly can be for an organization, how she segments users, and why marketers need to understand the people, the story, and the data. Check out this and other episodes of The Marketer's Journey on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and Spotify Key takeaways from this episode:Effective CMOs are well-rounded. Jessica stresses that effective CMOs need to understand every aspect of marketing, because every decision they make will impact the brand's image and messaging. She also says that having a well-rounded understanding of marketing allows her to be a more empathic and effective leader. Team communication is key. Jessica says she spends a lot of time focusing on how she can create an effective communication process with her team. Marketing teams work best when everyone understands what they are doing, why they are doing it, and how it ladders back into company goals. Find the right level of engagement. When deciding what path to send leads down, Calendly focuses on key personas when sending leads to a salesperson. Most leads don't need to speak with a customer service person, so sales shouldn't be flooded with leads who don't need them. Jessica and Calendly are constantly tweaking their lead scoring to make sure the level of engagement each lead receives is right for them.
