In this episode, I sit down with RayJuss — a seasoned digger, DJ, and former pirate radio regular who now calls Cheltenham home. We talk about his journey through London's underground music scenes, his time running the vinyl-only night Off The Record, and how his relationship with music continues to evolve. Ray reflects on the unique rhythms that inspire him — from deep house and broken beat to UKG and beyond — and shares some powerful stories about the search for lost tracks, the thrill of finding long-forgotten gems, and the ongoing drive to keep the culture alive. Topics we cover include: - Growing up with pirate radio and cassette culture - Rebuilding his music memory using old tapes and Shazam - The joys and challenges of promoting your own night - Making the leap from bedroom DJ to community builder - The importance of reaching out, connecting, and sharing Listen to the full conversation now on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud and Mixcloud This episode is part of a series of artist interviews in the lead-up to Ngoma, happening 18 July at Stroud Brewery. Episode 240 is live!
I'm joined by the brilliant Katie Novo ahead of her Ngoma debut at Stroud Brewery on 18 July. Bristol-based DJ and radio host, Katie's sets blend jazz, broken beat, soul, house, Afrobeat, and more — always with a focus on connection, joy, and the dancefloor. As the founder of Counting Blessings, she's created an open and welcoming space where people can let go and truly enjoy the dancefloor. Whether behind the decks at clubs and festivals or hosting shows on 1BTN and Noods Radio, Katie is all about celebrating music's power to bring people together. Katie is a wonderful soul. She speaks openly about her journey and experiences along the way and gives plenty of sage advice for new & experienced DJs. In this episode, she shares her musical journey, the discoveries that shaped her sound, her thoughts on DJ culture — and three incredible tunes she's loving right now. The show is available on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, and Mixcloud, as part of a series of artist profile interviews running over the next month in the lead-up to Ngoma.
Tickets for Ngoma are on sale now! Early-bird tickets are sold out, but general entry tickets are available via Skiddle.com and the Stroud Brewery website. https://www.skiddle.com/whats-on/Gloucester/The-Stroud-Brewery-And-Taproom/Ngoma/40878734/ Cover photography by Claire Waddell Photographer

Back on the decks after a much-needed reset. My wonderful wife (Ros) surprised me with a trip to Porto!
We made it back just in time for the Cheltenham Jazz Festival. We caught some incredible sets from Billy Cobham, Kokoroko, and the absolute highlight for both of us was Daniel Casimir and his big band.
This week's show, Weekend Commuter, is inspired by that whole experience. Travel, the music, the movement. It starts with Cobham's classic Stratus, into Kokoroko, Ashley Henry, and Casimir.

Deep, soulful house selections are included from Yooks, Mr. V, and Miggedy Maestro and more…

By DJ Robbie Duncan This week's ElecSoul 233 flows deep into soulful frequencies and boundary-pushing grooves, merging vintage soul with contemporary electronic finesse. We open with the masterful touch of Reel People featuring Dyanna Fearon, bringing that rich UK soul flavour on Back 2 Base, before drifting into Scrimshire's emotionally stirring Reflection, blessed by the delicate voice of Daudi Matsiko. Digging into crate classics, I've included a vintage Soul gem from The Fascinations, keeping things timeless, before we twist into garage-influenced deep house with a lush Brian Tappert rework of Kano's Can't Hold Back. Fresh soulful house vibes follow with Pau Roca & Laura Elle's Your Energy, lifted by a percussive, Latin-tinged remix from Karmasound & Less J. Timothée Milton, Mona Lee, and Sebb Junior then drop As Soon As – warm, uplifting and straight to the dancefloor. For the heads, Chaos In The CBD serve that hazy late-night groove with Marlboro Sounds, followed by a stand-out soulful stepper from Justnique – Look At Me Now. Things get deeper still with Thin Ice from Foil Somah, taking us into cinematic territory. Closing out the mix is a message in the music: Fuzion & Arnold Jarvis deliver Change (What We Need), with the Temple Movement Club Mix providing the perfect finale – house with heart, soul, and purpose. Welcome to another episode of ElecSoul, where we celebrate the legends of Black electronic dance music. Today, we honour the "Godfather of House Music," Frankie Knuckles, on what would have been his 70th birthday. Through his music, collaborations, and legacy, Frankie transformed the dance music scene and gave birth to house music as we know it. Over the next 60 minutes, we'll take a journey through his life, his artistry, and his enduring influence, playing iconic tracks along the way. Frankie Knuckles was born Francis Nicholls on January 18, 1955, in the Bronx, New York. Growing up in the 1970s, he was inspired by the emerging disco and soul scenes. Frankie began his career as a DJ alongside his lifelong friend, Larry Levan, at the legendary Continental Baths in New York City. The pair's seamless blending of disco, funk, soul, and European electronic records laid the foundation for what would later evolve into house music. The film captures the joy, resilience, and creativity of the gay community in the late 80s, just before the AIDS epidemic reshaped the scene. Welcome back friends! I'm refreshed after a great summer break. I've travelled far and wide and attended some great festivals as a civilian. Very much needed after over 20 years playing out almost everyday! Some good Stroud based DJ friends, Neon Pumps, Rosy Kear, Matt Sefton & Tom Monobrow, invited me to Bristol to set the scene for a curated night of music. Here's my set (I played 7pm to 8.30pm). It was great to lay it down easy. I'm gonna do more of these for sure! I hope you enjoy it. See you next week 4th October for the usual program.
