EPISODE 143 -  “GUESS WHO'S NUMBER ONE?: STEVE & NAN RANK TRACY/HEPBURN FILMS” - 6/08/2026  One of the most dynamic duos in film history is undoubtedly the teaming of SPENCER TRACY and KATHARINE HEPBURN. This chemistry was electric. Over the course of their careers, they appeared in nine films together — covering a wide range of genres. They were in everything from Westerns (“The Sea of Grass”) to film noirs (“Keeper of the Flame”) to what would become their specialty, romantic comedies (“Pat and Mike”). They also appeared in the seminal 1960s social comedy/drama “Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.” This week, Steve & Nan will do the impossible  — they will attempt to rank the nine films this duo made together. Form worst to best! How will your favorite stack up? This week on The Follow Up, we're going deeper on the two gifts Brian called “gifts that perceive” — discernment of spirits and the gift of faith. We talk through what it actually looks like when someone discerns something about a person or situation, and why the real question isn't what did you see but what do you do with it. We unpack the difference between genuine discernment and a critical spirit — why one serves the body and the other tears it down — and how love is the only thing that keeps these gifts from becoming weapons. Then we turn to faith: not saving faith, not the fruit of faithfulness, but the Spirit-given ability to look directly at impossibility and still hold to the promise. We wrestle with Hebrews 11:39 — the faith hall of fame for people who never received what was promised — and what that means for anyone staring down their own unanswered prayer.

Send us Fan MailIn this episode of Reasoning Through the Bible, Job 8 is examined verse by verse as Bildad enters the conversation with Job and speaks even more harshly than Eliphaz. This study explores Bildad's rigid theology, his appeal to tradition, his cruel assumptions about Job's children, and his belief that earthly prosperity always proves a person is right with God. The passage exposes the dangers of reducing God's ways to simplistic formulas and shows how true statements can still be used in deeply unloving ways. This Bible study is especially helpful for listeners searching for teaching on Job 8, Bildad and Job, prosperity theology, tradition vs Scripture, suffering and sin, misusing theology, and biblical wisdom in suffering. Job 8 provides a powerful warning against harsh religious certainty and points believers back to Scripture as the true standard of truth.Support the showThank you for listening!!  Please give us a five-star rating to help your podcast provider's algorithm spread RTTB among their listeners. You can find free study and leader resources at the following link - Resource Page - Reasoning Through the BiblePlease prayerfully consider supporting RTTB to help us to continue providing content and free resources. Chapter 7 sees Lucille Ball arrive at MGM, 31 years old, acutely aware this is her last shot at stardom.  She'll become the redhead we all think of including shining in Technicolor.  There's ‘Du Barry Was a Lady' which reintroduces her to Red Skelton and introduces her to Gene Kelly.  Then there's ‘Best Foot Forward,' a more-than-anything-else fun picture which begins her run of cameos (with the likes of Arthur Freed and Abbott & Costello).  There's also ‘Meet the People' with Dick Powell (right before his turn to Noir) and ‘Without Love' with Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy.  All of this peppered with war bond tours and, a true tragedy outside the scope of World War II, Lucille losing a family member.  And Desi?  He's in the Army now, stationed at Birmingham Hospital which is close enough to Desilu the ranch he should be coming home nights.  But, well, Desi's Desi.  To wit, we can't help but notice his and Lucille's seemingly unending cycle of passionate fights and makeups.  Until that cycle looks like the end.  Please chime in here and/or on Instagram @fromoutofthepastpodcast with your questions & comments, or just sharing your love of Lucille Ball and her road to ‘I Love Lucy!'  Thanks for listening ...

This show is a personal one. My mum passed away at Easter in 2016 after a long battle with vascular dementia following a stroke. Alongside my sister, I became one of her principal caregivers for nearly 10 years from those early days of recovery through to her later diagnosis. Throughout it all, Mum held onto something powerful: a willingness to try new things, and a focus on what she could still do, rather than what had been taken away. That mindset shaped so much of our time together. One of her favourite places in the world was the River Severn. We must have travelled along it, over it, and even on it more times than I can count honestly, I've lost track. A few days after she passed, I went down to the riverbank. I stood there, looking out across the water, and said thank you to Mum, to the river, and to all the memories we made in that place. The music in this week's episode reflects those feelings and more. The Big Idea: Marriage isn't dying - It's Misunderstood Emerson explains the dynamic that has helped millions of couples: "Without Love, She reacts without Respect. Without Respect, He reacts without Love." - The Crazy Cycle Many husbangs aren't bad men, They're tired. They feel nothing they do is good enough. So they withdraw. And when they withdraw, their wives feel unloved. And the cycle spins. Why "Happy Wife, Happy Life" is Dangerous When a man bases his worth on his wife's happiness: -He makes her his emotional god. -He becomes insecure. -He becomes reactive. -He slowly loses hope. Emerson reframes this powerfully, "Is your value God-given... or spouse driven?" God may use your wife to refine you, but she does not get to define you. Why Men Stonewall (And Why It's Misunderstood) University of Washington research (2,000 couples over 20 years) revealed: -85% of those who withdraw in conflict are men. -Men's heart rate spike into fight-or-flight mode during heated arguments. -Withdrawal is an attempt to de-escalate, not to reject. But wives interpret it as: "I don't love you." That's where mutual understanding matters more than communication. The Sexual Disconnect: What Most Couples Miss Men often think, "If she loved me, she'd meet my sexual needs." Women often think, "If he loved me, he'd emotionally connect first." The truth? Both want emotional and sexual connection. They just start from different ends. "You have to love her emotionally apart from sexual agenda." When she feels safe, secure and pursued, her desire increases. When he feels respected and wanted, his heart opens. This isn't manipulation. It's understanding design. Different Shades of Right One of the most practical lightbuld moments: Most marriage conflict is not moral, it's preference. It's not black and white, but different shades of right. Instead of: "I'm right, you're wrong." Try: "We're teammates. Same team. Same goal. Different plays."  That language changes everything. Emerson's Challenge: Picture Jeses standing beyond your wife's shoulder. When she annoys you... Ask yourself, "Would I respond this way if I knew I was doing this unto Christ?" You would die for her. The real question is, "Can you live with her... patiently, consistently and sacrificially?"

Christmas really is the most wonderful time of the year. It's wonderful because Christmas brings us all kinds of things. Gifts, goodies, time with friends and family, great lights and decorations, the list goes on. But most of all, I think, Christmas brings us love. This story really is all about love. God isn't always what we might expect - power, awesomeness, majesty - but love - love born among us as an infant. Whatever else Christmas brings us this year, none of it is really worth all that much unless we stop and consider that Christmas brings us love - and calls us to love. In today's homily, Fr. David reminds us that the pro-life mission begins not only with defending the unborn, but with defending the truth about the human person. As the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith taught in Donum Vitae (1987), “Human life must be absolutely respected and protected from the moment of conception.” This foundational truth reveals why the Church insists that no one may claim the right to directly destroy an innocent human being—for life begins with the creative action of God and belongs entirely to Him.Yet Fr. David takes us deeper: physical life and death matter, but our spiritual life or death is even more decisive. St. John tells us, “Whoever does not love remains in death” (1 Jn 3:14). Spiritual death is the absence of charity; spiritual life is union with God, who is love (Jn 14:23). St. Faustina writes in Diary 1148 that “we resemble God most when we forgive our neighbors.” Without forgiveness, the heart withers. Without truth, charity collapses.Through the story of Anna Maria Schmidt, Fr. David shows the terrible cost of hatred and the supernatural power of forgiveness. Her journey—from rage to grace—reveals that only God can heal the heart so deeply that it can forgive even in the face of grave injustice. This is the same grace our nation desperately needs. More than 65 million children have been lost to abortion since 1973. This staggering reality exposes not only a crisis of truth, but a crisis of love.Scripture teaches, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (Jn 8:32). Love divorced from truth becomes sentimentality; truth without love becomes cruelty. But united, they become the path to holiness. Study the faith. Seek the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth. Pray for our nation. And ask God daily to enkindle in your heart the charity that defends life, forgives enemies, and transforms the world.#marian #marians #marianfathers #marianhelpers #divinemercy #thedivinemercy #catholic #catholicism #romancatholic #romancatholicism #frdavid #catholictiktok #prolife #loveandtruth #holiness #gospeloflife #donumvitae #forgiveness #saintfaustina #mercy ★ Support this podcast ★

In Job 12, we meet Zophar—the youngest, most ruthless, and most merciless of Job's so-called friends. His words cut deep, offering no comfort, no compassion—only criticism. Zophar is convinced Job's suffering is proof of hidden sin, and that repentance would immediately solve everything. But there's a problem: if Job were to “fake repent” just to end the pain, he would be proving Satan's accusation true—that people only serve God for blessings. This message peels back the layers of the conversation to show the bigger picture: the unseen battle between God and Satan, and the truth that God's goodness is not dependent on our circumstances.Zophar should have pointed Job to hope, not condemnation. The lesson is clear—don't be a Zophar. Be the friend who reminds others of God's goodness even when life looks anything but good. This episode is part of our ongoing series through the book of Job. In this message, Pastor Chris Cheema examines the story of Simon the Magician in Acts 8 to show that without the love of God, everything we say, believe, or do amounts to nothing. Using 1 Corinthians 13 as a framework, he identifies four areas—words, gifts, faith, and works—that lose all value when disconnected from God's agape love. The sermon challenges listeners to move beyond outward performance and shallow belief, and instead pursue true relationship with Jesus through repentance, surrender, and receiving the Holy Spirit.

In this message, Pastor Chris Cheema explores the centrality of love in Christian life, emphasizing that all spiritual gifts, knowledge, and even acts of faith are meaningless without love. The message is grounded in biblical teachings, particularly 1 Corinthians 13, and highlights how love should be the foundation of every believer's actions. Pastor Chris urges the body of Christ to move beyond superficial expressions of faith and embody Christlike love in daily interactions, relationships, and service. The teaching challenges individuals to examine their hearts and align their lives with God's love, ultimately transforming their faith into a genuine, impactful witness. It bears saying that we find ourselves upon a privileged path as we begin this new journey with Saint Isaac the Syrian. To have access to his writings and access to such a translation in the West is a recent phenomenon and one not to be taken lightly. Further it is often said that Isaac is the greatest of the Desert Fathers in that through his writings one can move from being a novice in the spiritual life to the heights of contemplation. Immediately, one discovers that Isaac is unique and distinctive in his manner of approaching the spiritual life. He appeals to our capacity in faith to comprehend divine love and what has been revealed to us through Christ. It is what we comprehend in faith that fills the heart with wonder; that we are embraced by a love that never ends and that only seeks to raise us up out of the darkness of sin to the fullness of light. Isaac understands that, made in the image and likeness of God, we are going to be driven by desire; that is, a sense of lack and incompleteness. God has made us for himself and we only find our identity and the fullness for which we long in him. Our struggle is our attachment to the things of this world, including our own ego – the self. There are so many things that vie for our attention that the “one thing necessary” is often pushed out to the margins of our life or out of mind altogether. The love out of which we have been created and the lavish love through which we have been redeemed is often supplanted by that which eventually turns to dust. Our awareness of this should produce within us a fear that creates a movement toward God. Repentance is simply or acting on that awareness; turning away from our sin and our attachment to the things of this world and opening ourselves up to the healing grace and mercy of God. It is for this reason that Isaac does not focus on the development of virtue and the overcoming of vice as others do. For ultimately, we are not seeking the perfection of natural virtue or even to exceed what we understand as the heights of virtue. Rather, we are to understand the ascetic life is radically tied to being “in Christ”. In other words, the radical transformation that takes place through the grace that we receive through baptism, the Eucharist, and through the gift of the Holy Spirit leads to our participation in the life of the Trinity. Deification is what has been promised to those of faith. It is divine humility, divine love, divine compassion, and divine vulnerability that we are to embody. This takes place not through raw grit but rather through abandonment to Christ in a spirit of humility. As we let go of the illusion of self identity, independent of Christ, the true self begins to emerge.  Thus if we take anything away from this evening's discussion and reflection it should be the sense of wonder and desire that Isaac seeks to cultivate within the human heart. Love alone endures and the desire it produces inflames the heart to pursue the Beloved and the Life of the Kingdom. --- Text of chat during the group:  00:15:34 Bob Cihak: Father's Substack comments are another blessing for me. Realizing that he had made a tragic mistake by ending his engagement to Regine Olsen, the Great Dane, Soren Kierkegaard, wrote in his journal, "To live without love is a mistake for which there is no reparation, either in this life or in the life to come." Successful coupling is more difficult in modern times when we no longer need a spouse for the basics of survival but, in the end, falling in love was never really about survival. It is about meaning, and who couldn't use more meaning in life, along with a little coffee and poetry?
