Hailing from Oakland, Goapele's signature voice and powerful songwriting has made her a staple Neo-soul, R&B, and underground hip-hop. Growing up with a South African father and German-Jewish mother, she became educated on human rights issues at an early age and got her start in music as a member of a youth activism group. This led Goapele to pursue her career in the Bay's local performance scene where she collaborated with Zion I, Hieroglyphics, and Martin Luther. She self-released her debut album "Closer" and the single of the same name became a timeless hit. She was the first Black woman to have a music video on YouTube and since then she has continued to tour, release new music, and use her voice to support social change.--For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail info@historyofthebay.com--History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aaOnline Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One:Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlAInstagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_oneTikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_oneTwitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_oneFacebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone41500:00 Intro01:54 The power of music11:38 Songwriting20:25 South African heritage28:16 Youth activism32:45 First recordings36:49 Zion I 41:08 Self-releasing first album46:41 “Closer” music video50:49 New projects

Tana was raised in a home where her parents weren't on the same page. Her mother, a devout participant in the cult of Jehovah's Witnesses, raised her to follow that path. Her father, a racist man that struggled with alcohol and rode bikes, clearly had other views of life. These differences caused her tremendous problems growing up, but when a blood transfusion was needed for a 15 year old and disfellowshipped Tana after a horrific accident, it was Tana's father that came in to save the day. The song that Tana chose to represent her journey is Closer by Goapele. Support the show by donating to the cause on our Patreon page, Patreon.com/shunned Are you struggling in some area of life? You are closer than you think. Look, you can't fail if you don't quit. Now, listen, I get it. Going after our dreams isn't always easy. Half the time we don't start because we're scared. Hmm. And getting started is the first step of the process. It made me think about this track with Goapele. It's entitled, "Closer To My Dreams." You heard of it. In it she says, "Believing all my fears to burn down. Push them all away so I move on, closer to my dreams." You know, they say success isn't a destination. It's a journey. How are you moving towards your dreams? She goes on to say, "I'm moving upward and onward and beyond all that I can see." That's what you call vision. Listen, you may not can necessarily see right in front of you your dream, but you got the vision. And as long as you use that vision to keep you moving, hey, nothing can stop you. She says, "Stretching out my arms and I can reach. Oh so close, it's right there. Just reach, I can feel my dream. Closer to my dreams." Listen, you're getting closer to your dreams. You can't fail if you don't quit. I believe in you. Okay. Now, say it with me, "I'm getting closer to my dreams" because you are. All right. That's it for your dose of "Vitamin D." Be sure to follow us on all social media @VitaminDDawnDai and until next time, always remember, "you are your greatest asset."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We had the pleasure of interviewing TZAR over Zoom video! TZAR is a female singer/songwriter/artist who immigrated to the Bay Area from Moscow, Russia at just 7-years old. While being undoubtedly influenced by her classical piano training, her love for records from empowered artists such as Prince, Chakah Khan, Kate Bush, and Goapele have and continue to be an undeniable and thematic undercurrent in her songs. After playing shows across the Bay Area, TZAR followed her dreams down to Los Angeles and began featuring and writing songs with other artists such as KSHMR, Zed’s Dead, JOHN K, K. Flay, Promnite, Falcons, Hoodboi, and more. Her work and collaborations led her to perform at places such as Red Rocks (her debut performance as TZAR with Zeds Dead), The Warfield in San Francisco, and The Regent in Downtown Los Angeles. In 2019, after writing with the multi-platinum producer Djemba Djemba (prod. Sia, Madonna, Britney Spears, Justin Bieber), something clicked between the two, and Djemba decided to executive produce her debut EP - the lot of which brings her dreamy 80’s roots fresh into 2021. Additional producers who worked on the project include JULiA LEWiS (G-Eazy, Blueface, T-Pain), & MEMBA (Foreign Family, Evan Giia). The first single from her debut EP from the project: “What Ur Lookin’ For”, dropped in late 2020 and was featured on Ones To Watch, Nakid Magazine, several of Spotify’s New Music Friday’s around the world, and Apple Music’s New In Pop playlists globally. Powerful, sultry, dynamic, and moving are just a few words people have used to describe Adesha's voice. Though Deltrina had no idea her daughter's name meant voice, she knew Adesha was destined to sing. Oakland, California native, Adesha made her solo debut singing for hundreds of people at The War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco at the tender age of six. By age ten she had starred and co-starred in musicals, she sang a jingle for a commercial, and had performed solo at a few of San Francisco's live music venues. Years of training from singing in church; vocal coaching from her mother Deltrina Johnson, a trained gospel singer; and numerous live performances would follow the training she received in her primary years. At age 13 Adesha joined a girl group called “Under 21”. The trio spent most of their high school career performing and in the recording studio. At age 16 Adesha embarked upon a spiritual journey that would change the course of her future. Being famous was no longer her life's goal. She wanted her music to make a difference; she wanted her music to change lives. This decision would lead to Adesha leaving “Under 21”. The resistance she experienced from her cohorts, management, and peers as a result of her decision sent Adesha into a bit of a depression. She would spend the next 4 years soul searching and took hiatus from singing. To date Adesha and "Seven" have played a list of venues from San Francisco to LA. They have opened for Ledisi, Goapele, Gospel diva Kim Burrell, Kase, Anthony David, Carl Thomas and more. Adesha recently released a dance EP entitled “Giving Love a Try” which is soon to be followed by her first full length album “Giving Love a Try”.
