This week we have the highly anticipated Brian Owens & The Deacons of Soul in a live performance captured at the Levitt Shell. Brian Owens comes to us from his hometown of St Louis, our Mississippi River cousin to the north. Much like our rivertown neighbor to the south, New Orleans, it's a city long associated with the sounds of the African American created genres of blues, jazz, gospel, and soul. He recently released an album called Soul of Cash… a soulful reimagining of works from Memphis music icon Johnny Cash's catalouge. Grammy nominated blues man, Guy Davis, will also be with us to deliver an installment of the Blues Hall of Fame, an exploration of the lives of the pioneers and innovators enshrined in the Blues Hall of Fame.
Oh my word...yet another value adding and life changing episode! The guys were joined in-studio this week by our good friend Brian Owens. We believe Brian to be the FIRST in the "5 Timer" club! By day, Brian is the Vice President of Safety & Team Development at Buesing Corp. By night, Brian is not only a very talented musician, songwriter and author, but also a passionate crusader of workplace safety. As a philosopher, he strives to provide perspective to help people remember that the reason we work in the first place is to provide a sustainable means for the people, freedoms, and activities we all hold dear. As a safety professional, he reminds those same people that if we aren't behaving safely, and if we aren't being aggressively proactive to ensure the sustainment of our chosen ideals, we are just allowing situational circumstances to dictate the direction, and the outcome. Remember, if it ever gets hopeless, you overlooked something...let all that sink in! Music by Lynyrd Skynyrd!!

The Effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas MPAs have been proven to be an influential tool for marine conservation, with evidence showing improvements in biodiversity, habitat restoration, and fish stock regeneration within these protected zones. However, the effectiveness of MPAs can be limited by factors such as inadequate funding, weak enforcement, and lack of stakeholder involvement. Andrew Lewin believes that despite these challenges, MPAs remain vital for protecting the oceans. He discusses how well-managed MPAs contribute to the regeneration of fish stocks, bringing long-term ecological and socioeconomic benefits. Lewin also emphasizes the need for verified and validated research supporting MPA effectiveness, mentioning a recent study on large MPAs' impact on established fisheries. Singer Brian Owens and his father Thomas join Megan and Debbie in studio discussing the new album that they have out and the Father's Day concert.
Calgary immigration lawyer Evelyn Ackah speaks with her clients Brian and Michael, American expats in Canada who moved to Calgary in September of 2018. Brian Owens and his husband Michael Dettner had the opportunity to move from Tennessee to Alberta, Canada for Brian's job as Artistic Director for the Calgary Film Festival. Brian accepted the job, and the film fest contacted Evelyn Ackah and Ackah Business Immigration Law to get his LMIA as a senior highly Skilled Foreign Worker. Brian started work in Calgary a few weeks later. Michael needed to apply for a Canadian visa for an open Spousal Sponsorship and received a 2-year Temporary Resident work permit before moving to Canada, which Ackah Law handled. Brian and Michael's American expats in Canada journey includes living through COVID in a new country while trying to qualify for permanent residence, which they finally received in 2023. This is their expat story. The Calgary International Film Festival retains Ackah Business Immigration Law for guidance on immigration matters.Evelyn, Brian and Michael discuss:Why moving to Canada in 2018 was the best decision they ever madeAs Americans, why did they want to move to CanadaHad they ever lived outside the United States beforeWhat surprised them most about expat life in CalgaryAlthough they moved here together, Brian already had a job offer in Canada, while Michael - the trailing spouse - had to apply for Spousal Sponsorship. How did this make their immigration journey's different? Now that you've lived in Canada for 5 years - and lived here through the pandemic, experiencing all the delays getting your paperwork approved, what were their biggest misconceptions about living in Canada - good and bad?Are their friends mainly Canadians, Americans, expats or…???Before moving to Canada, what did their friends in America think about this decision?Brian and Michael have lived in Canada for a while and become Canada permanent residents, what do their American friends and family think now?If another American asked for advice about moving to Canada, what would you tell them? We will continue with new episodes after a two week hiatus. Until then please enjoy some of the fan favorites from the first four seasons. This episode was among the top shows and a bright spot of 2020. It remains relevant. In fact the content was so relevant and informing that this episode was adopted as a part of the curriculum for four college courses! Students at the historic Seminole State College of Florida had an opportunity to learn and grow from the experience and expertise of my esteemed guest. I know you will enjoy it. You truly have to see with more than your eyes. It's not a task easily done. I sat down with the renowned sculptor, Brian Owens for a discussion about his works and inspirations. However, after just a few moments it became about so much more. It became apparent that there are many levels to what makes anyone the crafts-person or unique individual that they are. This conversation turned out to be about all of us, including you, the listener, Don't miss out. I, for one, have been transformed once again. Listen with a friend or alone and then share what will certainly add value to your life. We believe that shining a light on safety is the best way possible to kickoff 2022! The guys were joined this week by Brian Owens. Who is Brian Owens you ask...besides being an American hero...he is a husband, father, musician and the author of "Inversion and the Perspective-Based Safety Culture". This is a completely different way of looking at safety that we believe will move you as it did us. Some of the items discussed include avoidable accidents, finding & fixing, risks associated with being reactive vs proactive, the power of perspective-based safety and how it changes habits, pre-employment behavior development, the significance of a compass, and does one-size fit all? PJ reinforces his love for Elon...BS is back in the saddle and DD has holiday brain fog. Brian Owens is quoted. Music for this episode by Pantera!!!

Brian Owens sings soulful Motown inspired R&B songs with his band the Deacons of Soul and his community outreach centers around giving underserved youth the opportunity to experience music making. His latest album shares cowriting credits with some of them but for this song we're going back to twenty seventeen when it was Brian Owens that did the learning -- from none other than Doobie Brother substitute vocalist turned full time lead singer Michael McDonald. The two revisited a song Brian Owens and the Deacons of Soul first recorded some years back on what Brian calls his ‘demo album'. That song got the proper treatment on the two thousand seventeen album “Soul Of Ferguson”. They both grew up singing gospel music in church in Ferguson, Missouri and they both went on from there to reflect messages of their faith in careers as singers and songwriters. For this episode, Brian shared nine multitrack session files and we'll start by hearing him shower Michael McDonald's vocal performance with some much deserved praise for inspiring Brian to step it up. Here's Brian talking about the singing that changed it all for him.

If you ask me, Brian Owens embodies the spirit and mindset of the independent restauranteur in New York City. As restaurants in the city were shuttering, Brian and his team were not only able to survive - they buckled down, invested in their outdoor, increased their delivery, went in heavy on social media, and most importantly kept paying their staff and kept their doors open! If enjoying thoughtful, heartwarming films is on your holiday to-do list, there’s a brand-new St. Louis-made musical well worth your time. “A New Holiday” tells the story of 10-year-old Thelma as she grapples with the loss of her grandmother and looks toward a different kind of Christmas — themes that resonate especially in 2020. Soul singer Brian Owens directed the 33-minute film, which features an all-Black and almost entirely St. Louis-based cast.
The boys recap the week and talk with Norman Love and Brian Owens. This is a great episode where we learn about the hockey beginnings of Norm and Brian, go thru the early days of Norm's exquisite pastry creations, and Brian gets a new nickname.
SUBJECTIVEIn this episode, we move on from vampires to talk about robots! Specifically, robot organs. Like, why does a robot need organs? And if it did need organs, why would it need human organs? We'll discuss robot face putty, building biosynthetic organs, and some incredible applications of 3D printing. Also, can we PLEASE change the stylistic standards of scientific papers to allow for some ENTHUSIASM??? This stuff is amazing!Sidebar:Regarding the Pregnancy and Birth episodes, we wanted to apologize for the gendered language we used throughout our discussions. We know that nonbinary, genderqueer, and transgender people can also get pregnant and give birth. The way we talk about it is a relic of our training, and we're trying to do better. We're sorry if we hurt anyone through our carelessness.OBJECTIVEResources, Citations, and Mentions:Wikipedia - Artificial Heart, accessed August 2020UCSF - The Kidney ProjectWikipedia - Tissue engineering, accessed August 2020What’s new about new synthetic organs? by Brian Owens, Nature News Blog, July 2011Tissue engineering: How to build a heart by Brendan Maher, Nature News Feature, July 2013Yong, E. Join me as I chat with Brian Owens, Artistic Director of the Calgary International Film Festival. In this episode, Brain explains why the Calgary International Film Festival is an economic driver for our city and how it can help redefine our image to the world.
Dans ce dix-septième épisode, Céline Boura reçoit Corinne Rocca, artisane de la voix et de la scène, sur le thème "Faire entendre sa voie". Épisode conçu sur “A change is gonna come » de Brian Owens & Michael McDonald. »

The artistic path of Brian Owens has long charted both tribute territory and totally new ground, and Owens is known to navigate both well. The local singer-songwriter’s 2017 album “Soul of Cash” premiered via Rolling Stone, and that same year Owens released the song “For You,” showcasing the vocals of five-time Grammy winner Michael McDonald alongside his own. McDonald and Owens share a hometown — Ferguson, Missouri — and are collaborating musically again this Sunday during a benefit concert at the Touhill Performing Arts Center celebrating McDonald’s legacy. Owens joins host Sarah Fenske to discuss the event, which is billed as “A Night for Life” and also features “The Voice” contestant Kennedy Holmes. Owens also discusses his journey as a musician and community activist.

This week we have the highly anticipated Brian Owens & The Deacons of Soul in a live performance captured at the Levitt Shell. Brian Owens comes to us from his hometown of St Louis, our Mississippi River cousin to the north. Much like our rivertown neighbor to the south, New Orleans, it’s a city long associated with the sounds of the African American created genres of blues, jazz, gospel, and soul. He recently released an album called Soul of Cash… a soulful reimagining of works from Memphis music icon Johnny Cash’s catalouge. Grammy nominated blues man, Guy Davis, will also be with us to deliver an installment of the Blues Hall of Fame, an exploration of the lives of the pioneers and innovators enshrined in the Blues Hall of Fame.
Today, Peter, Adam, and vocalist Brian Owens sit down to list their 7 favorite jazz vocalists. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

THE VOICE OF AMERICAN SOUL Sitting across the table from singer-songwriter Brian Owens, one might get the feeling of conversing with — as some say — an old soul. There is a calmness and self-assuredness that suggests he's been here before, even though he is only on the verge of becoming the new voice of American soul. He doesn't project the harried, fast-paced life of a national recording artist, but rather the soulful energy that dominates his music.Brian is known as one of the lead singers of Sidewinder, the Air Force band that became a YouTube web sensation with more than 2.5 million views and swept up a flurry of media attention for their version of soul-pop singer, Adele's “Rolling In The Deep.” He has been featured with the band on national television shows like The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Entertainment Tonight. And he is determined to balance the media attention with a level head. “I'm very excited about the exposure,” he says. “Positive exposure is always good, even when I'm not at the forefront. I believe it will come back to me in a good way.” Owens first major release, “Moods & Messages” is a self-proclaimed soundtrack to his journey as a soul artist. With the backing of St. Louis-based Destin 2b1 Records and distribution through New York-based BDG/RED, a Division of Sony Music Entertainment, Owens says, “Moods & Messages” is about balancing out how we feel and what we give out to the world in terms of feelings. These feelings often conflict, but you have to choose what your life will say, despite how you feel … It's about making choices.”

He doesn’t project the harried, fast-paced life of a national recording artist, but rather the soulful energy that dominates his music. Now, joining that class is Brian Owens. “I want to be my own voice, but in a way that’s familiar to people,” Owens says. “So I welcome the comparisons because it means that people take comfort in my influences.
