This week, arts24 welcomes acclaimed trumpet player Yazz Ahmed. Throughout her career, the jazz musician has blended Arabic and Western sounds. Her new album "A Paradise In The Hold" takes us to the shores of Bahrain, where local folklore and Fijiri – the music of the pearl divers – are brought to life through gorgeous scales, percussion and voices. Yazz Ahmed tells Marjorie Hache about the stories and work that went into her fourth album. We also take a look at new music by Maneskin's Damiano David, rapper Chuck D and electronic pop artist MØ.

Miles Davis' “Générique” floats in like he was blowing fog through his trumpet. It's a surreal, beautiful, late-night ode to the night itself and all its pain and delight. To stretch that feeling over an entire album, rather than three minutes, would be a Herculean task of skill and restraint. And yet, La Saboteuse exists. Yazz Ahmed's document of psychedelic, Bahraini-inspired Jazz feels and sounds like nothing else in its genre. In a decade that saw Jazz reborn and reimagined through the fertile chaos of Hip-hop, Minimalism, Afrobeat, Caribbean swing and Cuban rhythms, Ahmed crafted a myth of dream-like quality. So hear our interview with Yazz, read our thoughts on her work and see why it's the best of the 10s. “[Psychedelic music] means losing your mind, being totally captured by the music, going into a dream like state. ” — Yazz Ahmed

Jazz's influence can be felt in almost all popular genres today — dance music, hip-hop, even pop. But the genre itself can sometimes seem inaccessible. Why? Alexis unravels the enigmatic allure of jazz with the remarkable Yazz Ahmed, a trailblazing trumpeter and composer. Yazz invites us into the vibrant world of contemporary jazz, a world where innovators, rather than traditionalists, reign supreme. From Arabic influences to electronic experiments, her music and tastes transcend boundaries, and she is brimming with surprising, accessible recommendations to start your own listening journey. We examine the triumphant resurgence of jazz, which seems to be front and centre in a bold new live scene across the world, and whose sounds have been incorporated into everything from hip-hop, pop, rock, classical to electronica. Robert Bound is joined by music writer Ammar Kalia, London Jazz Festival director Pelin Opcin and trumpeter, Yazz Ahmed.
On the eve of the launch of her new album, ‘Seraph', featuring works for trumpet and string orchestra by James Macmillan, Grieg, and Satie, Tom Service speaks to Norwegian trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth about her diagnosis with cancer last year, her relationship with music during gruelling treatment, and the conscious decision she made after her recovery to commit again to a career in music. As Arts Council England reveals its 2023-26 national portfolio of funded organisations, Music Matters speaks to ACE's Director of Music, Claire Mera Nelson, about the body's investment decisions. We hear from a cross section of organisations who've seen changes to their public funding, as well as first-time recipients, with contributions from Chief Executive of the Paraorchestra, Jonathan Harper; Artistic and Executive Director of MishMash productions, Liz Muge; and Chief Executive and Artistic Director of the Britten Sinfonia, Meurig Bowen. And as the EFG London Jazz Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary, Tom's joined by jazz author and presenter, Alyn Shipton, former Director of Serious (the creative company who administer the festival) Claire Whitaker; and the British-Bahraini jazz trumpeter, flugelhornist and composer, Yazz Ahmed, who discuss how the British jazz scene has evolved since the early 90s. Jazz Beats from Ebi Soda feat Yazz Ahmed on Tru Thoughts. A great tune from Kutiman & Elif Çağlar. What comes to your mind when you think of ‘arm wrestling'? Burly men taking each other on to see who's the strongest in a testosterone charged atmosphere? Well now there is a woman at the heart of this sport in the UK. Kath Whitaker is the UK's only female arm-wrestling referee and is preparing to make her debut at the national championships in Birmingham this weekend. This week the cricketer Azeem Rafiq candidly described the racism he's suffered. No one could fail to be moved by his testimony on Tuesday, and the other interviews he's given since - sometimes very emotional. His comments will have triggered something in people who've experienced what he's talking about, and know it's true. We talk to the MP Naz Shah and Halima Khan who works in grassroots cricket. A new report by the Prison Reform Trust has just launched a new report on how long sentenced women are “invisible” in prison policy and practice. We hear from “Jane”, a former long-sentence prisoner who talks about her experience of jail and by Julia Killick a trustee from the Prison Reform Trust In the third of our series on toxic relationships we hear from a woman we are calling Katy who feels that her earliest experiences shaped what she looked for and needed from her partners. And we've music from Yazz Ahmed a British-Bahraini trumpet player and composer who is a pioneering figure in jazz in the UK. Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Lisa Jenkinson Studio Engineer: Tim Heffer

When Then (In Fading Light) Reinier Baas – Outline (#Oneminuteradio) STUFF. – Cumulus Anteloper – Bubble Under (Tour Beats Vol. 1) Ahmed Abdul-Malik – El-lail (East meets West) Rabih Abou-Khalil – Tsarka (Blue Camel) Dhafer Youssef - Odd Poetry (Opname Vrije Geluiden TV) Ibrahim Maalouf & François Delporte - Questions & Answers (Opname Vrije Geluiden TV) Tarek Yamani – Hala Land (Peninsular)
Yazz Ahmed, trumpeter and composer, and winner of the Innovation Award at tonight’s Ivors Awards, joins us in the studio. Yazz’s music blends jazz, arabic scales and rhythms, electronics, and the music of Bahrain, where she spent her childhood. Francis Ford Coppola's first two Godfather films are considered cinematic masterpieces, but The Godfather Part III never received such acclaim. Thirty years after its release, Coppola has recut the film and renamed it The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone. Film critic Tim Robey gives his verdict. When Oleanna was first staged in 1992 it prompted intense responses. “People used to get into fistfights in the lobby,” David Mamet said. In his play a student visits a professor for help, but then lodges a complaint of sexual harassment that will ruin his career. How will a new production fare today, after Me Too and Harvey Weinstein's conviction? Samira Ahmed hears from the director, Lucy Bailey. Presenter: Samira Ahmed Producer: Timothy Prosser

Yazz Ahmed is often referred to as the high priestess of psychedelic Arabic Jazz. This year she released her acclaimed third album, Polyhymnia, a grand work conceived as a message to the world about the history and growing empowerment of women. The album includes powerful tributes to noted women in history - Rosa Parks, Malala Yousafzai, Ruby Bridges, Haifa Al-Mansour, and BarbaraThompson. Rich in musical imagery, Polyhymnia explores the history of these women and their struggles and triumphs, evoking the universal human concepts of forgiveness, oppression, hopefulness, and power to overcome. Stream or buy Polyhymnia here: https://fanlink.to/YazzAhmed --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
After the "politicapocalypse" (Mike's coinage - ask him) of the previous episode, the boys decides to gently transition away from that minefield by looking at two artists more obliquely engaged with political discourse and two artists more or less removed from it entirely (by temperament and timing). To soothe Pat's scalded nerves, Mike brings a couple "cool" cats to the party, though by the end he agrees that one of them just might have been satirizing a certain mid-sixties obsession with Latin American rhythms. Mastodon, Trembling Bells, and disco-era Hank Crawford make up a truly eclectic pop matters segment. Paul Desmond – TAKE TEN; Bob Brookmeyer – SMALL BAND, TROMBONE JAZZ SAMBA; Yazz Ahmed – POLYHYMNIA; Eric Hofbauer – BOOK OF FIRE.
Electronic music maestro Jon Hopkins; Gateshead Jazz festival's Yazz Ahmed and Bex Burch of Vula Viel; and rising folk star Holly Clarke are among our guests this episode. Electronic music maestro Jon Hopkins tells us how Brian Eno taught him to make mistakes on purpose; jazz trumpeter and composer Yazz Ahmed says that more needs to be done to give female musicians and composers the respect they deserve; Vula Viel band leader Bex Burch explains the title of their new album; young violinist Giulian Fabrizi describes what it’s like to perform on the stage of Sage One; folk singer Holly tells us how Summer Studios helped launch her career; and fledgling Silver Sambanista Elaine Henderson gives us a preview of a forthcoming performance.
A large chunk of the work that goes into producing The Major Scale is research – lots of it. The majority of our time is spent reading, seeking new channels, and taking leads from faithful hardworking artist management and PR. This episode is a nod to these tireless efforts. The always anticipated Winter Jazz Festival is coming, and while reading about past years' events we came across an op-ed in Jazz Right Now titled "A Feminist Urge Is Driving the Shape of Jazz to Come," written by Hillary Donnell. The piece was so impressive and eye opening, looking at both the social roots of the music and towards the future that lay ahead, that we decided to book her for an interview on it. You might recognize Donnell, music journalist and DJ, from previous episodes of The Major Scale, and hopefully again in future broadcasts. In this episode, we discuss her op-ed in detail. She also picked out all the music to go along with it: from Geri Allen, Emma Jean Thackray, David Murray, Alice Coltrane, Nubya Garcia, Yazz Ahmed, and many more. Donnell knows her stuff, so don't sleep on this one! ABOUT THE MAJOR SCALE: Your attention please to a new program that celebrates and takes a fresh and bold look at the great American art form- JAZZ!!! The Major Scale is the title, the motto and the mission are, Jazz- past, present, future, and everything in between. A lot of focus will be on new and fresh sounds, deep cuts, closer looks at underrated artists, taking a different look at some of the titans of the genre, and getting the two cents worth from a number of surprise guests and sources. The Major Scale can boast amongst it's guests- legends like Herbie Hancock, Tom Scott, and Ahmad Jamal. The up and coming and the underrated-Kamasi Washington, Mia Doi Todd, Michael Blake. Fresh perspectives and commentary from the likes of Rock legend Al Kooper, who weighed in on the gospel. From The New Yorker, Amanda Petrusich expounds on her article about the movement to rename the Williamsburg Bridge in honor of Sonny Rollins. We explore the Soul-Jazz experiments of the Rascals. Grace Kelly from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert talks about her pop-up/flash mob concerts. Plus Thundercat, Henry Mancini, Ghostface Killah, Jaimie Branch, Nels Cline, Badbadnotgood, Cecil Taylor, and more get pick up on the Major Scale radar. Produced in Central Florida, this program seeks to become one of the defining voices of this Native American art form, and everything else that finds itself under it's umbrella. Think about programming and content found on the likes of World Cafe, Philadelphia, PA. Tiny Desk from Washington D.C., and KEXP Live from Seattle, WA. and that's what the Major Scale strives to do. For the curious, and lovers of music who like the details in between. In this episode of Newheads, Matt and Rav begin a new series by exploring the exploding modern jazz scene, and they start by highlighting the industry's hardest-working saxophone player: Shabaka Hutchings. As the main man in Sons of Kemet, The Comet is Coming, and Shabaka and the Ancestors, Hutchings shuns many long-held principles of the genre via blistering pace, intensity, and forward-thinking song progression and instrumentation. Plus, he plays a hell of a saxophone, making him the perfect bridge for hip-hop fans looking to access a genre that continues to push its boundaries.Podcast art: Pamela HerringIntro/outro music: Seth Greenberg

Phil Freeman talks to UK jazz musicians Shabaka Hutchings, Yazz Ahmed, and Nubya Garcia.
The eighth episode of the Burning Ambulance podcast is a special one. New York’s Winter Jazzfest brings artists from around the globe to the city every year, and packs out nightclubs with audiences excited to hear the best new music around. This year, the UK made a very strong showing, with multiple performers appearing individually and together. And since I had been impressed by the work of multiple British jazz artists last year, I decided to gather some of the best players around in one room at one time, for a conversation about the state of British jazz, their own work, and much more. This episode, I talked to clarinetist/saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings , who leads three groups— Sons of Kemet, The Comet is Coming, and Shabaka and the Ancestors—and who is on the cover of the current issue of The Wire; trumpeter Yazz Ahmed, whose second album La Saboteuse placed on multiple critics’ year-end lists, including mine; and saxophonist Nubya Garcia, who released her debut EP as a leader, the six-track Nubya’s 5ive, in 2017. Hutchings and Garcia are also heavily featured on the forthcoming UK jazz compilation We Out Here; he was the musical director of the project, and she plays on five of its nine tracks. This episode was a challenge to set up, juggling everyone’s schedules, but we met on a Thursday afternoon in a rehearsal room at the New School and talked for well over an hour about their individual careers, the state of British jazz generally, Brexit, and much more. Special thanks go out to Matt Merewitz for setting it up.
The first episode of 2018.
