Join art advisor Megan Fox Kelly for a special holiday episode featuring her annual selection of art books worth giving—and keeping for yourself. This year's list includes revelatory biographies, major exhibition catalogues, and essential critical writing. From Barnett Newman's political and intellectual life before he became a painter, to Monet's restless vision traced through newly translated letters, these books illuminate artists and movements with fresh insight and rigorous scholarship. For the first time, Megan also recommends three exceptional books for young readers—intelligent introductions to art that never talk down to children. Whether you're looking for David Hockney's guide to pictures, the Met's "What the Artist Saw" series, or a poetic history of the color blue, these are books that teach children (and adults) how to see.To hear in-depth interviews with authors of other outstanding art books, subscribe to "Reading the Art World" on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.SHOW NOTESEpisode Timestamps: [00:00] - Introduction [01:05] - Barnett Newman: Here (https://press.princeton.edu/books/hardcover/9780691249186/barnett-newman)[01:38] - Fail Better: Reckonings with Artists and Critics (https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262552356/fail-better/)[02:17] - Monet: The Restless Vision (https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/250416/monet-by-jackie-wullschlager/)[02:42] - Man Ray: When Objects Dream (https://store.metmuseum.org/man-ray-when-objects-dream-80060783)[03:24] - Turner and Constable: Art, Life, Landscape (https://yalebooks.co.uk/book/9780300266481/turner-and-constable/)[03:55] - Sargent and Paris (https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9781588397959/sargent-and-paris/)[04:32] - Manet and Morisot (https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300280982/manet-and-morisot/)[05:15] - Dreamworld: Surrealism at 100 (https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780876333082/dreamworld/)[05:55] - Henri Rousseau: A Painter's Secrets (https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300284355/henri-rousseau/)[06:29] - Robert Longo: The Acceleration of History (https://www.hatjecantz.com/collections/new-books/products/67473-robert-longo-the-acceleration-of-history)[07:08] - A History of Pictures for Children (https://www.abramsbooks.com/product/history-of-pictures-for-children_9781419732119/)[07:50] - What the Artist Saw (Series) (https://store.metmuseum.org/what-the-artist-saw-paul-cezanne-80057949)[08:20] - Blue: A History of the Color (https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/606200/blue-by-nana-ekua-brew-hammond-illustrated-by-daniel-minter/)Music composed by Bob Golden

Paris Chong welcomes back renowned photographer Jeff Dunas, who dives into the photographic books he produced during the COVID-19 pandemic, primarily from his archive. These projects include a small, limited-edition book with publisher Nazraeli called *Highway 61 to Honeyboy*, a Renaissance garden book, and a collection of his American pictures. He discusses the changing landscape of photo book publishing, particularly the unique crowd-sourced model used by Michelle from Minor Matters, who also designed his earlier book, *State of the Blues*. Dunas also reflects on his early career, including his widely known nude photography for Playboy while in his late teens. Dunas shares his deep connection to Leica cameras, which he has used since the early eighties, noting he still owns an M3 and M7. He highlights his attachment to the M9 Monochrome, calling it "perfect" for black and white work—like shooting an M6 with Tri-X film. He contrasts the slow, deliberate process of shooting with film (the psychological importance of a 36-picture limit) and the mastery of the darkroom with the current, faster pace of digital photography. He likens his new hobby of making sourdough bread to the focused, scientific process of working in a darkroom. The conversation also covers the Palm Springs Photo Festival, which Dunas co-founded and ran for 17 years. He proudly defines its portfolio reviews not as critique sessions, but as a crucial "job fair," connecting emerging photographers with industry people who could hire, publish, or exhibit their work. While the festival itself is currently on hold due to the high costs of maintaining its high-quality faculty, the reviews continue online. Finally, Jeff discusses his successful "Palm Springs Photo Festival podcast," which he started in 2020 to maintain a sense of community during the pandemic. You can find Jeff Dunas's work on his website, dunes.com.Show Notes:www.theparischongshow.com/episodes/jeff-dunas-passion-projects-publishing-art-books-palm-springs-photo-festival-leicaChapters:(00:00:00) Intro(00:00:51) Jeff Dunas(00:01:19) A Few New Books(00:05:07) Paris's First Art Book(00:08:28) Famous For Nudes(00:11:25) Super Rare Books(00:15:26) Palm Springs Photo Festival(00:18:48) Marker 12(00:22:45) Leica Store(00:25:24) Other Hobbies(00:32:25) Didn't Know You Had A Daughter(00:36:26) Landscape - Palisades Fire Talk(00:39:04) What's Next?(00:46:33) Outro

Every photographer dreams of publishing a book of their photographs. But what exactly does that entail? In today's show, we're going to peek behind the scenes of this complex and daunting process in a chat with two complementary figures who've spent their respective careers helping to redefine what a photo book can be. Starting with three basic questions—Why a book? Why now? And what is the role of a book in your career at this time?—our discussion expands to cover a broad range of concerns. From distinguishing between the many different publishing models available today, to insights on sponsorship and publishing contracts, to tips about marketing and getting people onboard with your project, you'll come away with inventive strategies for publishing your work in book form. We've envisioned this show as an impromptu master class, so get ready to take some notes! Guests: Mary Virginia Swanson & Rick Smolan Episode Timeline: 4:45: Mary Virginia Swanson's basic advice to photographers interested in publishing their photographs in book form, plus the different publishing models available today. 10:22: Rick's start as a freelance photographer and the story behind his shift in roles to launch the Day in the Life book series. 15:04: The importance of sponsorship or in-kind donations, plus innovative strategies for negotiating such deals. 23:04: The two different categories of photo books: greatest hits with the photographer as subject and a book that has a separate subject and overarching story. 27:55: Tips for going on press, advice about publishing contracts, and suggestions for buying back a book before it gets remaindered. 34:54: The issue of vanity presses, and the matter of requiring a subvention from authors to help cover the publisher's costs. 43:03: Publicity and marketing: You are the best salesperson for your book. Tips for getting your book seen and heard about, from magazines to podcasts. 49:08: Episode Break 50:02: Should you create a full mock-up version of a book or just show a publisher a selection of photos? 59:22: Benefits to working with a literary agent when seeking to publish a photo book. 1:01:44: Slicing up the pie by hiring freelaners or finding a partner to share in the work. 1:07:38: The importance of publishing deadlines and many important markers tied to a calendar, plus the cover photo and book blurbs. 1:14:22: Swanson and Smolan on their picks for memorable photo books. 1:25:19: Parting advice about getting other people excited about your project. Guest Bios: Mary Virginia Swanson has spent her career helping artists find the strengths in their work, identify receptive audiences, and present their personal vision in an informed, professional manner. Her broad background as a photo educator, author, entrepreneur and advisor spans areas of exhibiting, collecting, licensing, and marketing photographs. A few career highlights include working with Ansel Adams to manage education offerings at the Friends of Photography in California, heading Special Projects for Magnum Photos in New York, and founding and directing Swanstock as a unique licensing agency for fine art photographers. Swanson is the recipient of many awards, including the Society for Photographic Education's Honored Educator Award and the FOCUS Award for Lifetime Achievement in Photography from the Griffin Museum in Boston to name just two. In 2011, Swanson co-authored Publish Your Photography Book with Darius Himes, which is now in its third edition. Currently, Swanson works independently from her home base in Tucson, offering classes, workshops and consulting services to artists and arts organizations, serving as an advisor for multiple nonprofits, and giving back through other community-minded activities. Rick Smolan is both a photographer and an entrepreneur. A former contributor to Time, Life, and National Geographic, he is perhaps best known as creator of the Day in the Life book series, plus subsequent book projects of massive scope. As CEO of the multi-modal company Against All Odds Productions, Smolan designs and executes crowd-sourced, global projects that combine compelling storytelling with state-of-the-art technology. These projects capture the human face of emerging topics while engaging a wide range of media platforms to result in books, TV specials, social media apps, exhibitions, and hundreds of millions of media impressions. One such project, based on Smolan's 1977 National Geographic cover story about Robyn Davidson's solo travels across the outback has enjoyed continued life in multiple books, plus the feature film Tracks, with Adam Driver cast in the role of Smolan. Other recent projects include The Human Face of Big Data, which looks at how all our devices are creating a planetary nervous system, and The Good Fight: America's Ongoing Struggle for Justice, which became one of Amazon's top 100 books within a week of its release. When she was just seven years old Erin Dionne knew she wanted to be an author. She took all the right steps - she majored in English at Boston College, she earned a Masters in Fine Arts in Creative Writing at Emerson College in Boston, and set her sights on writing the great American novel. But a chance opportunity to take a class in children's literature ignited a new creative spark. Today, Erin is a successful author who has written 7 books for tweens, children's picture books, and recently, a nonfiction book about writing. She also writes mystery novels –for grownups– under a pen name. Erin talks with us about launching herself into the creative process, how she has learned to receive and accept feedback, and the generous community of writers she has found to share her experiences and challenges with. Erin confesses that she's not one of those writers who writes every single day. She's a busy mom and a professor of creative writing at Montserrat College. But, she finds at least 15 minutes every day to work on something related to her writing. At a time when it's harder and harder to get our kids to put their devices down, we talk to Erin about the importance of reading and storytelling and the connection between reading and learning empathy. Note: I bought a new Mic Blue Yeti USB Microphone for Recording (PC and MAC) Avabalie to read on Book Walker: https://global.bookwalker.jp/deed6731a8-c12b-4e68-93e8-ec8af7e6c61b/buddhist-priest-a-spider-yaoi-manga-volume-1/ Haji also did Love in limbo. (Love in limbo by Haji | Episode 24) I already did a podcast episode of this manga. It has been published in English by Sublime Manga. It's a fantasy/ romance story. And I have two vols of Love In Limbo. I have been wanting to read this manga for a while. Then I discovered it was available on Book Walker. I bought a few mangas along with this manga and I plan to read and get a review. It appeals to me because it is a relationship between a Spider and a Priest. And I like the fantasy BL genre. I say, I actually really enjoy it. It is a sweet story, a romantic story between and Buddhist priest and a spider (beastman). The spider is clinging to the priest and he is possessive but in a cute way and is sensitive. He wants to be with his priest for the rest of his life and wants him to be his husband. Sogen worries about his own life and sometimes finds the spider beast man annoying. But he slowly falls for him. The bedroom scene is kinky. Sogen is the bottom and the spider is the top. I like the spider design, he looks really cool. I am not a fan of spiders in general, I have a phobia of spiders. I get frightened easily when I see a spider that is slightly bigger and beefy. The drawing is well drawn. Art Books mentioned in this episode: Toboso Yana Art Book: Black Butler 1 (CD JAPAN) Hon Toku Art Book: IDEAL (KiRcomics) (CD JAPAN)
