In the first of an occasional series he delves into his archive to bring you interviews with Stephen Sondheim, David Bowie, and many more.In this first episode he remembers meeting the man who reinvented the musical Stephen Sondheim in New York in 2010. In this conversation they discussed his long and storied career, his tempestuous upbringing, his tutelage under the beady eye of Oscar Hammerstein, what makes a musical great. The Orlando Pride keep winning. We aren't used to that, but we're here for it. Barbra Banda has brought her lethal finishing to the City Beautiful and her fourth goal in three games was just enough for the Pride to squeak past previously undefeated Racing Louisville, 1-0. We check in on our score predictions, discuss the game in detail, and make our selections for Player of the Match. Our mailbagbox this week wants us to visit Tampa for some women's soccer. It also includes questions about the tackiness level of a hat, the sustainability of Orlando's offense, lineup changes when players get healthy, and more. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. We'd also appreciate any ratings or reviews you can leave wherever you get your podcasts, and if you do that on Apple Podcasts, we'll find them easily and read them on the show. After the mailbagbox, we suddenly remembered we forgot to talk about the North Carolina match. So, we checked in on our predictions, discussed the 4-1 win, and made our Player of the Match selections. Better late than never! We finished the show with our previews and our score predictions for the Pride's upcoming, first-ever meeting with expansion side Bay FC. The newcomers have been leaking goals, but also scoring them. Orlando will need to avoid a letdown to stay undefeated on Saturday at home. Here's how Episode 42 went down: 0:15 – The Pride weren't at their best Sunday against Racing Louisville, but they still managed to grind out their fifth straight win. We discuss! 15:18 – The mailbagbox contains both questions and offers to host your faithful hosts. 39:26 – We forgetful rubes remembered there was another game since our last podcast and dive into Orlando's win over the Courage, and we close with a Bay FC preview and predictions.

In our glorious age of streaming services, we never need to worry about recording anything ourselves - we just click “Continue Watching” and chill. But in the sad, not-too-distant past, you couldn't always just open up Netflix and binge all nine seasons of Suits whenever you felt like it. Instead, if you missed your favorite soap, tough noogies. That is, that was the way things were until the magical VCR entered the American household. Out of the house? No problem! Just pop in a cassette and you're golden. The only problem was that two companies wanted the glory of becoming the standard format on which people would record their shows - and neither was going down without a fight. Daniel teaches Rob and Ray about the infamous format war between Sony's Betamax systems and tapes, and JVC's competitor, the VHS; how the history of recorded and broadcast video on recorded tape media took some strange twist and turns involving World War II and Bing Crosby; Rob's and Ray's favorite streaming services; the legal challenges Sony faced from studios terrified that home recording would be the death knell of movie distribution; and why home recorded media is no longer something consumers really seem to want or even have access to.If you like what we're doing, please support us on Patreon, or you can subscribe to our bonus content on Apple Podcasts. Another year around the sun! It is the Winter Solstice which means it is time for our sixth annual "Best Of" episode of 3 Books. 3 Books began back in 2018 with a simple goal of counting down the 1000 most formative books in the world ... 3 books at a time. We wanted this show to help all of us read more and read better and we wanted to do that by being different -- with a lunar-based schedule and a deep intention of being an ‘intrinsically-motivated journey' with no ads, sponsors, commercials, or interruptions. We started collecting values like: "No book shame, no book guilt", "Humans are the best algorithm", and "You are what you eat and you are what you read." Over the years this journey has been a warm ray of sun in my life. I hope it's felt the same for you. My goal with the “Best Of” is to reflect on the year by picking a snippet from every Chapter and Bookmark that helps us pause and ponder. You'll hear (or re-hear) wisdom from our chats with Steve Toltz, Timothy Goodman, Johann Hari, Tank Sinatra, Suzy Batiz, Martellus Bennett, Chefs Osama and Houssam, Jully Black, Lenore Skenazy, Heather McGowan, Sahil Bloom, Ralph Nader, and J. Drew Lanham (his interview is coming out on December 26th!!) Thank you for sharing time with me and our incredible warm-hearted community of 3 Bookers around the world. I hope this (lengthy!) Best Of can keep you company on a long drive, late-night walk, or over some quiet moments through the holidays. Let's stop and reflect and then keep enjoying the ride. Listen now at 3books.co/chapters/best-of-2023 --- Leave us a voicemail. Your message may be included in a future chapter: 1-833-READ-A-LOT.   Sign up to receive podcast updates here: https://www.3books.co/3mail  3 Books is a completely insane and totally epic 15-year-long quest to uncover and discuss the 1000 most formative books in the world. Each chapter discusses the 3 most formative books of one of the world's most inspiring people. Sample guests include: Brené Brown, David Sedaris, Malcolm Gladwell, Angie Thomas, Cheryl Strayed, Rich Roll, Soyoung the Variety Store Owner, Derek the Hype Man, Kevin the Bookseller, Vishwas the Uber Driver, Roxane Gay, David Mitchell, Vivek Murthy, Mark Manson, Seth Godin, Judy Blume and Quentin Tarantino. 3 Books is published on the lunar calendar with each of the 333 chapters dropped on the exact minute of every single full moon all the way up to April 26, 2040. 3 Books is an Apple "Best Of" award-winning show and is 100% non-profit with no ads, no sponsors, no commercials, and no interruptions. 3 Books has 3 clubs including the End of the Podcast Club, the Cover to Cover Club, and the Secret Club, which operates entirely through the mail and is only accessible by calling 1-833-READ-A-LOT. Each chapter is hosted by Neil Pasricha, New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Awesome, The Happiness Equation, Two-Minute Mornings, etc. For more info check out: https://www.3books.co

The Orlando Pride took a brief pause from earning points in NWSL play to completely rotate the lineup and get smacked down 4-2 at Washington in the Challenge Cup one week ago. That wasn't as fun as seeing Tori (not Taylor, even though I slipped up and called her that) Hansen score a wicked cool backheel goal or Summer Yates sending Ally Watt in for a second Pride goal. Most of the moments in between were far less fun. We discuss the match and the lineup and select our Player of the Match. But wait! There's more! The Pride also returned to league play on Sunday at Gotham FC and even though the final score of 0-0 doesn't necessarily inspire oodles of confidence (if you happened to miss the game), Orlando actually played its best and most complete match of the season. Those pesky goals sometimes don't happen, but if the Pride can stay at that level — a level that limited Gotham to one shot on target, which didn't arrive until the 84th minute — then Seb Hines has his team on the right track. We broke down the second match as well, and once again selected our Player of the Match. Once again, we had both an empty mailbagbox and empty hearts because of it. You can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. Finally, we gave our key matchups and score predictions for the Pride's rematch this Saturday at home against the Washington Spirit. Here's how Episode 6 went down: 0:15 – The Pride stayed winless in the Challenge Cup (0-1-1) but maintained their current unbeaten streak in league play (2-0-1). 16:42 – Our empty mailbagbox allowed us to go into our key matchups and score predictions for Saturday's rematch game against the Washington Spirit.

The Orlando Pride played two matches since our last show, and that gave the team twice as many opportunities to hurt us. I'm sorry to say that the Pride took full advantage of those opportunities, losing their grasp on a win in the 99th minute in their first NWSL Challenge Cup game of 2023 and then getting blanked on the road by the league's only other winless team. We're here to talk you through the 1-1 draw against the North Carolina Courage that had some positives — the play of Carly Nelson in goal and Emily Madril at right back, for example. We also make our picks for Player of the Match. After that, we tackle a disappointing 2-0 loss in Kansas City in which the Pride actually seemed to be more in control of the game than the hosts for big chunks of the match. It's that darn lack of finishing chances that ultimately has done in Orlando so far this season (aside from the opener at Portland). However, there are signs of life with the Pride and hopefully Seb Hines can build on those. We also selected our Player of the Match from the regular-season away game on Saturday. The Professional Referees Organization came out and said the review that ultimately led to a penalty that allowed Gotham FC to break a 0-0 deadlock in the 100th minute and beat the Pride 2-0 should not have been reversed. It did not meet the organization's standard for a clear and obvious error and the call on the field should have stood. Well, that isn't helpful in any meaningful way, but OK. We have thoughts on how PRO can better hold itself accountable. They might not be realistic ones, but they just might work. There was nothing in the mailbagbox this week so get your questions in next week by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and asking us anything. Be sure to use the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. Finally, we gave our key match-ups and score predictions for the Pride's match this Saturday night at San Diego Wave FC. Here's how the show went down: 0:15 – The Pride got a draw at the death instead of a win in the Challenge Cup and another loss in the league. Please make it stop. 22:46 – PRO admits that PRO gonna PRO. 33:42 – Predictions for a trip to face the San Diego Wave.

Orlando City drew Tigres last midweek but in this case a draw was a loss, as the Mexican side got the all-important road goal in a 1-1 stalemate and advanced in the Concacaf Champions League. The Lions proved they belonged and were never bested but the tiebreaker setup did not shine on Orlando. Ercan Kara scored Orlando's first Champions League goal and no one who saw it will ever forget it. The team fought hard and it was a solid first outing in the competition against a former champion and perennial favorite. We broke the match down and named our Man of the Match — that second part was easy. The Lions, unfortunately, did not take that good performance into Saturday. Orlando City played poorly in the first half and couldn't recover from it after halftime. Martin Ojeda finally scored his first MLS goal but the Lions had little to celebrate other than that in a 2-1 loss at home to a Charlotte team that had been exceedingly poor to start the year. Still, we had to throw in some analysis and our picks for Man of the Match and we did our duty. Orlando Pride rookie Messiah Bright scored a brace in the NWSL side's final preseason match. That, along with a blast from Kerry Abello, allowed the Pride to come from 2-0 down against the Washington Spirit and win, 3-2. The Pride finished 5-0-0 this preseason. Bright joins us this week as our special guest and talks about that brace helping her build confidence. It sounds like the Pride are a confident bunch and the rookie forward talked about playing for Seb Hines, whether he actually ever gets angry, and her adjustment from college soccer to the professional ranks. Big thanks to Messiah for coming on the show. We discussed the Pride's new “Highway Woman” primary kit — which is great — and the story behind it. Whether the team is good this season or not, Orlando will once again be on point in the uniform game. The Pride have a difficult opening day, traveling to Portland to face the defending champion Thorns. It should make for a good early test to see how Orlando stacks up against the league's best. We also briefly touched on the OCB roster that dropped this week. Some familiar names are back, some are gone, and there are some new faces — some of whom have yet to arrive — this season. The Young Lions kick off their 2023 MLS NEXT Pro season Sunday in Philadelphia. This week's mailbagbox asked for some predictions on Orlando City's real-life finish vs. AFC Richmond's fictional one, how we fell in love with the beautiful game, and more. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Finally, we looked ahead to Saturday night's game at Philadelphia, complete with our key match-ups and predictions for what might happen against the Union. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 331 went down: 0:15 - The Lions were knocked out of Champions League despite never losing, but then they lost against what has been a pretty meek opponent to this point in the MLS season. 35:06 - Messiah Bright stops by! The Pride rookie was a delight to talk to and we look forward to seeing her on the pitch based on all the things she said in our interview. 51:54 - Pride and OCB news, our mailbagbox, and our key match-ups and predictions. Before this week's show gets underway, we've got some announcements to make and we are pretty pumped up about them all. There is our fundraiser to launch our independence, obviously, which has us all extremely emotional and thankful. To that end, we began the long process of giving out our shout-outs to our brand new Founders. It's going to take a few shows to get them all in! If you were part of this week's, it means we don't have any way to contact you to get your benefits to you, so please email us. Then there are some podcast-specific announcements that we feel will make everyone's experience more enjoyable. We hope you like what's coming! Now, on to why you're here... Orlando City has played to two consecutive scoreless draws and the two results felt quite different from each other. The Lions survived squad rotation against a good FC Cincinnati side last weekend in league play and survived Tigres in Concacaf Champions League play on Tuesday night in Mexico. We analyze the two matches and make our Man of the Match selections for both games. After our conversation about two straight 0-0 draws, Orlando Pride Vice President of Soccer Operations and General Manager Haley Carter jumps on with us to talk about the job she's been hired to do. Among the things she shared with us is a huge tease about the summer transfer window, but alas...no specifics yet. Carter obviously has a lot of belief in Pride Head Coach Seb Hines and in strengthening the club through development at every level. After our discussion with Carter, there was news from the Pride side about the team's latest preseason win, the signing of draft picks Messiah Bright and Summer Yates, and a minor schedule change. We dipped into a full mailbag this week to discuss Ercan Kara, the AFC Richmond players we'd want to suit up for Orlando City, and more. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Finally, we looked ahead to Saturday night's showdown at D.C. United, with key match-ups and predictions, and we're extremely amped about next Wednesday's rematch with Tigres. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 329 went down: 0:15 - Celebrating a shutout win for the second straight year and yet another opening day result for the Lions. Also celebrating a potential new deal for Torres. 36:09 - Haley Carter joins us to talk about her task of turning the Pride around, her thoughts on the current roster, and maybe a surprise is coming? 57:15 - The Pride won another preseason game and signed two more draft picks ahead of the 2023 season. 1:04:46 - Things we love: the mailbagbox, 5-star reviews on Apple Podcasts, and making predictions that will probably turn out to be horribly wrong. Orlando City‘s week didn't start out so hot with a 4-1 thumping in South Florida putting the Lions outside the playoff picture, looking in. Facing a must-win game with neither starting center back due to Antonio Carlos' suspension and Robin Jansson's season-ending surgery, Orlando fell behind at home against Columbus and things were looking bleak. Then everything changed. Junior Urso and Benji Michel each pulled off perhaps their best touch of the ball all season in the second half against the Crew, leading the Lions back. Urso took care of his own finish, while Michel's shot drew a penalty for handball on Milos Degenek that Facundo Torres converted. Ultimately, after the officiating crew figured out who was supposed to be on the pitch for stoppage time, Orlando City clinched a postseason berth for the third consecutive year, jumping over the Crew. We've got our analysis of both matches and our selections for Man of the Match. There are plenty of accolades go go around. In less pleasant news, the Orlando Pride finally got a resolution to the investigation into Amanda Cromwell and Sam Greene. It did not go well, as allegations against both for verbal abuse, favoritism, and retaliation were substantiated and both are out of a job after their contracts were terminated by the NWSL. It's a black eye for the club and you can't say the hire had zero red flags, but this was still an unexpected end to a short coaching tenure. The Pride are looking for their next head coach and they must find someone who places the highest value on integrity, but who can also coach. We wish the Pride all the luck in the world with the search. The USWNT has had a terrible time in Europe over the last week and we touch on that a little but it too is a bit depressing at a time we want to be happy. This week's mailbag asked us to make Orlando City upgrades in the off-season, which team we would have chosen for a first-round match-up, and more. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Finally, we previewed Orlando City's visit to Quebec this Sunday, where the Lions will face CF Montreal in a first-round MLS Cup playoff match. We gave our key match-ups for the game and made an attempt to predict the final score. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 315 went down: 0:15 - The Lions split two matches and squeaked into the playoffs. It was bad before it was good. And now there's a chance at another trophy, albeit a longshot. 48:27 - The Pride are without a head coach and the search is on after Cromwell and Greene were found to have abused their positions. The USWNT may be getting paid like the men but we wish they wouldn't have started to play like them. (OK, that was too mean. Sorry.) 1:04:39 - The mailbag is pretty full this week and we give our key match-ups and score predictions for Montreal. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Orlando City had a pair of split results at home since our last show, with a good performance overall but a severe lack of finishing in a 1-0 loss to Atlanta United during another wet, weather-delayed, midweek match. The Lions could just about have put the Five Stripes' playoff chances on life support but instead Atlanta is knocking on the door and Orlando has more to do if it wants to both clinch and perhaps challenge for a home postseason match. We break down the loss and select our Man of the Match. Things went much more to our liking on Saturday with Toronto FC coming to town looking to keep its faint playoff hopes alive. Instead, this time the Lions stuck the dagger in and eliminated the Reds with a 4-0 beatdown at home to go into the international break on a high note. It was Orlando's biggest regular-season win of the season and biggest ever win over Toronto. We were unanimous again in our Man of the Match selection and it wasn't Facundo Torres, even though he made the MLS Team of the Week, which can be stupid, for reasons we explain on the show. The Pride fell out of playoff contention with a third straight loss and second consecutive via shutout despite having some glorious early scoring chances at Louisville. The team gave it a valiant effort under Interim Head Coach Seb Hines but fizzled at the end of the season as the Pride have done in six of their seven seasons of existence. We discuss the road loss to Racing Louisville and prepare for the worst with North Carolina and San Diego coming in to try to feast on the scraps this week. OCB's season was figuratively over before but now it is literally over after the Young Lions blew a 1-0 lead late and lost 2-1 at home to Toronto FC II on Decision Day to close out their first MLS Next Pro season. While OCB can't hurt us anymore, it will be interesting to keep an eye on what happens with the players this off-season and if any Homegrown signings take place. Jack Lynn was shipped off to San Antonio in the USL Championship, where we hope he gets some playing time at the second tier level. This week's mailbag asked us to draft basketball teams from the Avengers and Justice League members, wanted us to describe MLS, and gave us the keys to a time machine. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. With the Lions off this weekend, there were no key match-ups or predictions for Orlando City this week. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 312 went down: 0:15 - The Lions suffered a loss but then got a win, so it was an even week and the team got a few points closer to the postseason but there is still a lot of work to do in the final three games of the season. 32:08 - The Pride and OCB continued to be bad this week and we are not pleased with this development (or lack of any development). 55:00 - We open the mail and for some reason, I had to pick last in a draft for no apparent reason just days after my birthday. Orlando City went and did the thing, winning the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Lions claimed a trophy with a resounding (but difficult) 3-0 victory over Sacramento Republic FC thanks in large part to the efforts of Facundo Torres and Benji Michel in the final 15 minutes plus stoppage time. Most of The Mane Land staff was on hand to see this historic event and we're all still basking in the glow of a championship and the prospect of Orlando playing in the Concacaf Champions League. However, this is Central Florida and a little rain is going to fall, obviously. In this case it was allegations of spying lodged before the game by Sacramento. We'll have to keep an eye on what transpires from the investigation but at this point we're not expecting anything major to come from it and we hope that is the case. With the good and the bad comes the ugly, and this past week it was the treatment of Taylor Twellman on social media for the high crime of breaking unwelcome news. Others reported it without much more detail without the vitriol. Having just had a phone conversation with Twellman about Orlando City earlier in the day and having heard the compliments he gave our city and fans just a few hours before that news broke. He reiterated that online but with the unfortunate timing of it being right after his news-breaking tweet and it was met with some true ugliness. That was unfortunate. The Lions went to Philly and took a worse beating than we expected but not a surprising one, all things considered. We'll take the trade-off since it was always going to be a difficult fixture. Orlando City will turn its attention toward a vital two-game homestand now. The Pride lost their second straight — this one at home against the Portland Thorns. Seb Hines' team has no margin for error in the playoff chase and must get a result in Louisville to realistically stay in the fight. OCB played like a team that had just been eliminated from playoff contention with a 6-1 beating at Philadelphia Union II. Honestly, the less said about the Young Lions' match on Sunday, the better. This week's mailbag asked whether college sports are best enjoyed at home or in person. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Finally, we gave our key match-ups and predictions for Orlando City's upcoming home matches against Atlanta United and Toronto FC. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 311 went down: 0:15 - The Lions got a shiny trinket for the trophy case but the buildup wasn't without drama and we address all of it. 48:07 - Orlando City got whacked by a team that's been whacking everyone, the Pride seem to be back to their pre-unbeaten-streak form, and OCB was awful on Sunday. 1:16:53 - We open the mail and look ahead to Atlanta and Toronto. Orlando City experienced its highest point of the season on Wednesday in a 5-1 blowout win over the New York Red Bulls to reach its first-ever U.S. Open Cup final. Unfortunately, the Lions followed that with one of the season's lowest lows, by conceding twice in a four-minute span in stoppage time Sunday to turn three points into none at D.C. United. This 2022 season sure has been a roller coaster ride. Dave Rohe and Michael Citro are here to talk about all the key discussion points from the two matches and, as always, make our selections for Man of the Match. We've also got a new signing to discuss, which adds more depth to the midfield. And we'd like to address that whole bus parking thing that people seem to want to discuss, with some input from Junior Urso's comments after Sunday's game, actually. The Pride were back to their non-losing ways after a week off, grabbing yet another draw in what is now four straight matches without a loss (1-0-3). The players and interim manager Seb Hines haven't given up on this season and that's about as inspirational a story as we've had on the Pride's side of things this season. Kudos to all involved and long may it continue. We give our thoughts on Sunday's 2-2 draw at Kansas City, which despite the loss of a multi-goal lead, was certainly a decent result for Orlando, all things considered. OCB was off this week, and that makes us a little sad because we didn't get to see Jack Lynn score a goal for the Young Lions. He'll get a chance this weekend at Toronto and hopefully he'll net two just to make up for lost time. This week's mailbag asked us about purple smoke, what we thought of PRO's take on the two contoversial calls in the Philadelphia game — which only made us angry all over again — and (for some reason) made us construct a softball team out of Orlando City players. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Finally, we gave our key match-ups and predictions for Orlando City's upcoming match this Saturday against the New England Revolution. Carles Gil's name might have come up. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 305 went down: 0:15 - The July grind finally came to an end with vastly different outcomes. The bottom line is that the Lions will play for a trophy in September. 47:00 - The Pride get on the scoresheet twice and bring home a hard-fought point against one of the league's hottest teams. 58:06 - Our mailbagbox and our predictions for the Lions against the Revolution.
