DOJ lawyers accused Rasha Alawieh, a kidney transplant specialist at Brown University, of having “sympathetic” photos of Hezbollah leaders on her phone. She was put on a plane to Paris and informed that her H1-B visa had been canceled.   Jennifer Lee’s new album is a tribute to her late best friend. She also talks about LA’s impact on her identity, and what it was like to not comprehend music or language due to a brain disorder.

Los Angeles-based DJ and producer, TOKiMONSTA is out with a new album called Eternal Reverie. The album was written while TOKiMONSTA’s best friend was diagnosed with cancer and ultimately passed away a few months later. TOKiMONSTA talks about how her friend informed this latest record, why it was important to delay this record and cancel her initial tour to be with her friend in her final months of life, and TOKiMONSTA shares the story of her own health crisis she faced 10 years that resulted in two brain surgeries. “My career, these things can come back,” TOKiMONSTA says. “There’s always a possibility that if I made a poor decision in that regard, I could figure out a way. But I was never going to get my friend back. At the point that I had made that decision to cancel my tour, I already knew we weren’t going to have her for much longer.”Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this episode of Rehash, we speak with Laura Jaramillo, CEO and co-founder of SONA, about helping artists build a more sustainable revenue, designing fail proof protocol incentives, and using music to onboard the next billion users to crypto. Like many of us, Laura's journey into crypto was a winding one with many seemingly mismatched pieces that somehow all came together and are contributing to her work at SONA today. After turning down a deal from a major record label at age 16 to become the next Shakira, Laura decided to pursue furniture design at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design), which eventually led her into product and protocol design and designing what is now SONA, a platform to help musicians monetize their music in a different way. We do a couple of deep dives in this episode - the first one on how to build a sustainable revenue for artists by implementing crypto and DeFi primitives into a music streaming service, and the second on how to design the most effective incentives for a protocol that's resistant to spam bots and token miners. We also talk about her new project, SONA, the super random way in which she met her co-founder, TOKiMONSTA, and Laura and Diana have a full circle moment when Diana realizes that a party she had attended almost a year ago during Art Basel was in fact a party put on by Laura and TOKiMONSTA to celebrate one year of their meeting and the birth of SONA.If you're a musician or creator or any kind, or if you have any interest in the creator economy from any angle, you'll want to listen to this episode. As TOKiMONSTA, Jennifer Lee has made a name for herself as a Grammy-nominated music producer, pioneering the L.A. Beat Scene and ranking as one of the top 100 DJs worldwide. Her entire discography has drawn critical praise, collaborating with a long list of artists including Anderson Paak, Earthgang, and Ryuichi Sakamoto, and remixing artists like Sia and Beck. In 2015, Lee was diagnosed with Moyamoya, a rare brain disease that left her unable to communicate or comprehend music, but she persevered through two surgeries and cognitive therapy to make a triumphant comeback at Coachella in 2016. Her first album post-surgery, Lune Rouge, was nominated for ‘Electronic Album of the Year' at the 2019 Grammy Awards. In 2020, she released her fourth full-length album, Oasis Nocturno, showcasing her progression as an artist with a mix of house, funk-soul, and hip-hop. Throughout the pandemic, she continued to innovate by hosting the popular music program Lost Resort on Twitch, collaborating on an NFT collection, and curating a livestream event for Women's History Month. Always looking to combine her creativity with innovation, TOKiMONSTA continues to push boundaries across music, fashion, tech and beyond. Toki has now entered the world of tech having cofounded a music tech start up by the name of “Sona.” The aim of Sona is to democratize music streaming for artists in a world where the pay per stream is not adequate for a musician's cost of living. The protocol and platform will reconstruct the scaffolding of music streaming so that audiences still have access to all the music they desire, while allowing artist's payout to equate to what they truly deserve. In 2022, Sona raised approximately 7 million in funding and is in development. The company is aiming for a mid-2023 launch. In this episode of Takin' Care of Lady Business®, recorded in Ibiza, Spain at the International Music Summit, host Jennifer Justice sits down with special guest TOKiMONSTA, a DJ and music producer who shares her experiences as a woman of color and encourages listeners to lead with their best foot forward, choosing to represent who they really are instead of taking shortcuts. The episode also explores her tech start-up, Sona, which rewards both artists and curators, offers a fairer payment system and uses blockchain technology.    Here is what to expect on this week's show: Sona's plan to revolutionize the music industry with a streaming platform that allows users to stream music for free and invest in artists by buying the streaming rights to their songs. How Sona uses blockchain technology in the music industry to bring transparency and efficiency to the ecosystem for musicians. Challenges for female producers in the music industry, gender bias, fundraising, and democratization in the music industry. Quotes: "With the internet, it kind of opens the floodgates for people to kind of just steal music, and that's really difficult for people who make music... I think technology and music are so intertwined now that it's kind of hard to say that they're two separate entities. Like, they're very linked." - TOKiMONSTA "I never wanted to be a DJ. You know, I wanted to make music. And now it's like I kind of love both and I feel that both are very different and dynamic skills that I've had to learn to kind of work on." - TOKiMONSTA "As far as making music and producing, that's something that came out of just having such a deeply rooted love for music. And then one day, I decided, I think I can do that, you know." – TOKiMONSTA "I feel like the more diversity we have, especially in music, the more interesting it gets because you have all these different perspectives and different ways of thinking.” - TOKiMONSTA https://tokimonsta.com https://sona.stream https://www.internationalmusicsummit.com/   Learn more about your ad choices. QRTR is an electronic music producer and DJ based in Brooklyn, NY.Brooklyn's Meagan Rodriguez, aka QRTR, learned how to use CDJs in a smoky discotèca an hour before DJing in front of a crowd of dancing Portuguese club-goers. She returned to the same club years later, but this time, she had her own original music to share. Bouncing between high-energy DJ mixes and hypnotic original live sets, QRTR has shared the stage with the likes of Tokimonsta, Tiga, Phantoms, Galantis, and Oliver, to name a few. QRTR has performed at some of New York's most renowned nightclubs, including The Brooklyn Mirage, Output (RIP), Good Room, Elsewhere, and Bossa Nova Civic Club. In 2018, she debuted her live setup while headlining at Brooklyn Bazaar — weaving together an hour-long live journey of remixed original tracks. While her Brooklyn home base will always be número um, QRTR has toured internationally, performing in Portuguese open air clubs and smoky Parisian lounges.  Enjoy x

George Fitzgerald, SOAK, Marie Davidson, Mount Kimbie's Kai Campos and TOKiMONSTA discuss how they make their music matter in today's transient world, whether an artist's work has to have a clear narrative, having to live with music that you're not 100% happy with, and accidentally writing knock-offs of your favourite artists. George FitzGerald is one of the most popular electronic producers and DJs in the UK right now. He was raised on garage and dubstep in his early years, before moving to Berlin to work as a translator and falling in love with the city's house and techno scenes. French-Canadian producer Marie Davidson's hypnotic style combines analog synthesizers and drum machines with “spoken text” vocals, leading to a prolific career both as a solo artist and member of creative trio L'Œil Nu. SOAK is a thought provoking singer-songwriter from Northern Ireland. Her effortless intimacy and moving lyrics have marked her as a voice for her generation, writing honest and introspective tracks that are mature beyond her years. After expanding the horizons of the dubstep scene in the late 2000s, Mount Kimbie's Kai Campos has gained a reputation for being an innovative producer, lending his skills to the likes of James Blake, King Krule and slowthai. TOKiMONSTA is a producer, DJ and prominent member of LA's underground dance music scene. She creates a futuristic style of electronic music that touches pop and instrumental hip-hop, and is also the boss of the Young Art label.
