As summer festivals wind down, we turn to ever prolific Afro-funky Ibibio Sound Machine and frontwoman Emo Williams delivering a heart-pounding, foot stomping, floor burning EP, The Black Notes. That comes on the heels of their album Pull The Rope, released earlier this year. What better way to celebrate than dropping the needle on the title track.
Ibibio Sound Machine.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Our guest today is London producer, DJ, and songwriter Joe Goddard. As a founding member of the beloved band Hot Chip, Joe has been a significant force in the world of electronic music for years. Last month, he released his third solo studio album, the beautifully produced Harmonics. This record is a sonic masterpiece, marked by its warm and empathetic tone, featuring collaborations with artists like Hayden Thorpe, Ibibio Sound Machine, and members of Jungle and Hot Chip. In today's episode, we chat with Joe about the gentler approach he took on Harmonics, working with his Hot Chip bandmates, and how he decides whether a song is for his solo project or the band. We also touch on his early music journey and get a hint about when he might visit Australia next.Joe Goddard: Instagram / SpotifyPurchase Harmonics here.Visit our official website here and follow us across our socials. Harmonics is the third collection of songs by Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard, who opens the floor to an introspective approach to dance music on “Follow You.” But that’s not all you’ll find on the new album: There is a wide palette of sounds and collaborations, including a track with Eno Williams of Ibibio Sound Machine, Jungle’s Tom McFarland, UK Jazz artist Alabaster DePlume, to name a few.
Verdadeiro caldeirão cultural, a banda londrina Ibibio Sound Machine lançou recentemente seu quinto álbum, “Pull the rope”. A trilha fica com Alabaster DePlume, I'm Good at Not Crying e Ibibio Sound Machine com Protection from Evil. In this patrons-only bonus episode, Jeremy and Tim have a conversation about what music has been on their turntables recently. Jeremy brings a pair of Indian compositions from very different ends of the musical spectrum: a steel strung guitar played like a sitar, and one of ten famous 'ragas to a disco beat'. Joining the dots between Indian Classical, '60s American fingerpickers and today, we also hear a new-ish release on show favourite International Anthem from reformed Post-Rocker Jeff Parker, and tuck into some 2010s electronic Afro-Disco from London's Ibibio Sound Machine. Tim shares a number of new discoveries, including the riotous contemporary Ghanian gospel of Alotgté Oho and a deeply psychedelic dancefloor freakout from Nico Gomez. We end with the new release from our friends at Beauty and the Beat, a tried-and-tested remix from our friend Kay Suzuki of some fantastic Guadalupian Gwoka. This is part of a rough series of more conversational, unplanned episodes reflecting on what's been on our record players recently and what we've been up to that we'll be releasing to patrons to say thank you for your support. Produced and edited by Matt Huxley. The tracks discussed are: Jeff Parker - Four Folks Vishwa Mohan Bhatt - Raag Bageshree Don Cherry - Om Shanti Om Alogté Oho - Doose Mam Ibibio Sound Machine - The Talking Fish Nico Gomez and His Afro Percussion Inc. - Baila Chibiquiban Charanjit Singh - Raga Bhairav Gaoulé Mizik - A Ka Titine (Kay Suzuki Gwoka Dub) Order your copy of Excursions in Gwoka vol . 1 from Beauty and the Beat here: https://beautyandthebeat1.bandcamp.com/album/excursions-in-gwoka-vol-1-batb-005

A thrilling collaboration was born from a mutual love shared between Afro-funk collective Ibibio Sound Machine, and Grammy Award winning, indie-dance pioneers Hot Chip. The groups found each other through a long history of enjoying each other's sets on festival stages worldwide. From there, it was only natural that Hot Chip would step in to produce Ibibio Sound Machine's fourth album, “Electricity.” Standout track “All That You Want” will give you hints of Giorgio Moroder, and Grace Jones while simultaneously serving you its own signature style.
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a lovefest between two musicians who came together to create one of the year's most electrifying records: Eno Williams of Ibibio Sound Machine and Joe Goddard of Hot Chip. Ibibio Sound Machine has been mashing up sounds for just under a decade now, blending elements of Afrobeat and electronic music into a fierce combination that inspires dancing, chanting, and sweating—at least when they're allowed to hit the road. Williams is a force of nature on their newest album, Electricity. She was born in London but grew up in Nigeria—specifically the Ibibio region—and was exposed to those incredible regional sounds before moving back to London for school and steeping herself in the electronic music happening there. Electricity captures her vision pretty perfectly, thanks at least in part to today's other guest, Joe Goddard of Hot Chip. As you'll hear in this chat, Goddard was a fan of Ibibio Sound Machine, having seen one of their incredible live performances at a festival, and the feeling was mutual. Goddard and his Hot Chip collaborators came in to produce Electricity, which was the first time Ibibio had used an outside producer. You can hear the Hot Chip fingerprints all over the record; it's an amazing collaboration that both sides are clearly very happy with, as evidenced by this chat. And just moments ago—for me, anyway, it will be later for you—Hot Chip announced a brand new album as well. Freakout/Release will be out in August, and Hot Chip will play the second weekend of Coachella this Saturday. In this podcast, Goddard and Williams get deep into musical influences, including Nigerian electronic music pioneer Wiliam Onyeabor, Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, and more. They also talk about how sometimes the audience doesn't know you're having a bad show, and about the “super synth power” they found while working together. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Eno Williams and Joe Goddard for chatting. If you like what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform. In 2008 I started a series of radio shows with fellow Freak and host, Jonny Rock. The original format was based around vinyl. Digital started to creep in, then CD's, then YouTube rips, and so on. But the idea remained the same, that we were sharing our discoveries with an audience.Fast forwarding a couple of years and expanding on the original concept, I will once again be playing dance music that you may or may not have heard, but this time said music will be readily available, if pointed in the right direction of course. The idea is for you to use me as your selector slash shop assistant in a virtual record store. Not only will I be shouting about both old and new music, but I will also be following it up with a series of compilations to be released on my label, Classic throughout the year. I will be your slightly odd, slightly off-centre, guide. But ultimately and most importantly, your friendly on-line record shop assistant. 1. The Regime - Deuzy Vive [Izipho Soul]2. This week's show covers new music from LA's Sudan Archives, a new single from Britain's Yungblud, a great tune from Detroit's Elzhi, produced by LA's Georgia Anne Muldrow, and a hot tune from London's Ibibio Sound Machine. For the archive pick this week, Mark digs up a lost gem from Berkeley, CA-based Darondo that was released in 1973, called “Didn't I.” This is a bohemian soul number, with dynamite vocals and an unexpected lead violin melody. Of course, there are six more bonus tracks, but you have to sign up for our email newsletter to get those. It's pretty easy to do, if you just click this link. (And do so without fear. We won't misuse your email address, as this show is run by two guys, Mark and Brendan; Not some faceless corporation.) Lastly, don't miss our fabulous Spotify playlists. We make one for each episode of the show, so grab the latest if you are up to date, and dig into previous episodes if you are new here, or just curious. Have a terrific week!
