Our guest today is London producer, DJ, and songwriter Joe Goddard. As a founding member of the beloved band Hot Chip, Joe has been a significant force in the world of electronic music for years. Last month, he released his third solo studio album, the beautifully produced Harmonics. This record is a sonic masterpiece, marked by its warm and empathetic tone, featuring collaborations with artists like Hayden Thorpe, Ibibio Sound Machine, and members of Jungle and Hot Chip. Harmonics is the third collection of songs by Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard, who opens the floor to an introspective approach to dance music on “Follow You.” But that’s not all you’ll find on the new album: There is a wide palette of sounds and collaborations, including a track with Eno Williams of Ibibio Sound Machine, Jungle’s Tom McFarland, UK Jazz artist Alabaster DePlume, to name a few. 

Verdadeiro caldeirão cultural, a banda londrina Ibibio Sound Machine lançou recentemente seu quinto álbum, “Pull the rope”. Liderado pela vocalista nigeriana Eno Williams, o coletivo de afrofunk eletrônico transmite uma mensagem de otimismo e alto astral no novo trabalho. Daniella Franco, da RFIA Ibibio Sound Machine se formou em 2013, após o encontro do produtor musical e saxofonista australiano Max Grunhard com a cantora Eno Williams. Na época, o projeto experimental tinha o objetivo de transformar em música histórias da infância da vocalista na Nigéria, cantadas na língua ibibio. Mas as duas primeiras faixas gravadas fizeram tanto sucesso que o grupo atraiu outros músicos – entre eles, o percussionista brasileiro Anselmo Netto – e deslanchou.Mais de dez anos depois, e com cinco álbuns gravados – um deles produzido pelo Hot Chip – a Ibibio Sound Machine fez a volta do mundo ao integrar a trilha sonora de várias séries de TV, entre elas a célebre Sex Education. Em 2022, o grupo abriu dois shows do Coldplay no estádio Wembley, em Londres.Neste ano, a banda lançou “Pull the rope”, um enérgico trabalho que, segundo palavras da própria Eno Williams, “emana esperança e amor”. This 8-member multicultural band put out their latest album ‘Electricity' in March of 2022. Blending elements of West African funk and electro-post-punk, it was produced by saxophonist Max Grunhard in collaboration with Hot Chip. The record highlights singer Eno Williams' adamant vocals, and expands the band's sound - it's all bangers, ready for the club. This performance features the first 4 songs from the album, though in a different order. 4348 Kevin Cole Thursday 10/27/22 Bosq Song for Ehi (feat. The Ibibio Horns and Kaleta) a 2022 single on Canopy Limited. Bosq is the musical pseudonym for Benjamin Woods, who has been utilizing Afro-Latin music in fusion with Funk, Disco, Reggae, House and Hip Hop to dazzling effect for a decade now. The Boston-bred, Colombia-based musician has released 4 full albums, heaps of EP's of original music, and countless collaborative singles and remixes with artists like Fania Records, Orchestre Poly Rhythmo de Cotonou, Poolside, Nickodemus, and many more. He recently teamed up with the horn section of Ibibio Sound Machine as well as vocalist Kaleta for a fiery new single released via Portugal-based label Canopy Records, whose specialty is “Sub-Saharan synth swagger, re-calibrated and re- celebrated.” Titled “Song for Ehi,” the track is a combination of classic Edo-funk, Afro-disco and reggae disco with a groovy meandering bassline, soaring horns arrangements, and timbale breakdowns. A thrilling collaboration was born from a mutual love shared between Afro-funk collective Ibibio Sound Machine, and Grammy Award winning, indie-dance pioneers Hot Chip. The groups found each other through a long history of enjoying each other's sets on festival stages worldwide. From there, it was only natural that Hot Chip would step in to produce Ibibio Sound Machine's fourth album, “Electricity.” Standout track “All That You Want” will give you hints of Giorgio Moroder, and Grace Jones while simultaneously serving you its own signature style. 

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a lovefest between two musicians who came together to create one of the year's most electrifying records: Eno Williams of Ibibio Sound Machine and Joe Goddard of Hot Chip. Ibibio Sound Machine has been mashing up sounds for just under a decade now, blending elements of Afrobeat and electronic music into a fierce combination that inspires dancing, chanting, and sweating—at least when they're allowed to hit the road. Williams is a force of nature on their newest album, Electricity. She was born in London but grew up in Nigeria—specifically the Ibibio region—and was exposed to those incredible regional sounds before moving back to London for school and steeping herself in the electronic music happening there. Electricity captures her vision pretty perfectly, thanks at least in part to today's other guest, Joe Goddard of Hot Chip. As you'll hear in this chat, Goddard was a fan of Ibibio Sound Machine, having seen one of their incredible live performances at a festival, and the feeling was mutual. Goddard and his Hot Chip collaborators came in to produce Electricity, which was the first time Ibibio had used an outside producer. You can hear the Hot Chip fingerprints all over the record; it's an amazing collaboration that both sides are clearly very happy with, as evidenced by this chat. And just moments ago—for me, anyway, it will be later for you—Hot Chip announced a brand new album as well. Freakout/Release will be out in August, and Hot Chip will play the second weekend of Coachella this Saturday.  In this podcast, Goddard and Williams get deep into musical influences, including Nigerian electronic music pioneer Wiliam Onyeabor, Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, and more. They also talk about how sometimes the audience doesn't know you're having a bad show, and about the “super synth power” they found while working together. Enjoy.
