One of the biggest struggles people have is in coming to terms with apparent problems, whether they be current problems, or problems from the past. While we might be able to grasp the concept of evolution or progressive change intellectually, when the experience becomes uncomfortable it becomes more difficult to rationalize. In this episode, Thom answers questions from listeners seeking resolution to problems that seem too big to be solved, or that have gone beyond the time when something can be done. It's a reminder that perspective isn't just an intellectual process, and that it's a byproduct of consciousness. Mental Health Awareness Week is upon us, and Dr Dougal Sutherland has five ways to wellbeing to offer, plus some potential work-related activities. Take Notice – get together a bunch of people at work for daily or weekly mindfulness or yoga sessions – if you're lucky, work might pay for them. Give – give time, or money or resources —good example is volunteering: sports coach, church youth group, charity shop, meals on wheels— lots of evidence to show this not only helps the community but also is good for personal wellbeing. Be Active – schedule in some activity every day —make it like any other meeting in your diary— just do it – might be something you could do with others at work as having a buddy helps with accountability and makes you stick at it. Connect – really important in this age of hybrid working —virtual connection is good, but nothing beats face to face— is there a way to encourage everyone to be in the office on certain days and then when they are there making connecting with each other a top priority. Keep Learning – keep going from te wiki o te reo Māori —or learn a new skill at work— do some professional development. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Affirmation (vv. 32-33) Phil. 2:6-8 though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. The Rapture Jo. 14:1-3 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?[ 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 1 Thess. 4:13-18 13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 15 For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words. 2 Thess. 2:1, 3-4 Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers, 3 Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, 4 who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. Rev. 3:10 Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth. 1 Pet. 4:17-19 17 For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 And “If the righteous is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”] 19 Therefore let those who suffer according to God's will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good. The Analogy (v.34) The Alarm (v.35-37) Takeaways from the Mystery of the Second Coming: Be Loving (Jo. 13:35; 1 Pet. 3:15) Be Alert (v. 37; 1 Thess, 5:6.) Be Active (vv. 34-36; Ro. 13:11-12) Be Comforted Be Confident (1 Jo.2:28)

[14:01] - The parents that Sari coaches can call her any time and that support and availability make a huge difference. [15:08] - Parents judge themselves more severely than others and that creates undue stress. [15:59] - Sari shares some strategies and things she observes in the home. [17:50] - Authentic compliments to other parents can create an alliance and far less judgment. [23:12] - Sari shares a personal story to demonstrate that sometimes we think we are being judged when we really aren't. [26:18] - Special events in class and field trips change structure. Parents can and should prepare the child who needs that structure. [28:39] - Accommodations that help at school could be utilized at home as well. [30:18] - Every parent has experienced struggle. Responding to a question on coping with job loss during the pandemic, Sadhguru offers a profound perspective and reminds us of the most precious things which are still with us – our life and that of our loved ones. Few other tips by Sadhguru for a fulfilling personal and work life: MANAGE YOURSELF: What you identify as stress, fear or anger doesn't happen because of what's around you, but due to your own faculties not taking instructions from you. If your mind was taking instructions from you, it would create pleasantness, not unpleasantness. It is your inability to manage your own system that causes this problem. Assume control over your own being, and everything will be fine. GET THE CONTEXT RIGHT: If somebody's life is happy, it does not mean that he is doing something differently. He does the same things you do after he wakes up in the morning, or before he goes to bed at night. But somehow, his life seems magical and beautiful because of the context in which it is being seen. The quality of your life does not depend on how simple or complex it is; it depends on how you look at it. BE ACTIVE, BUT HAPPY: You do not have to be ambitious to be incessantly active; it works even if you are joyful. If there's no stress in what you're doing, you will be willing to be active any number of hours per day. Being driven is overrated; you function best in an environment of freedom and intelligence. DON'T LOSE PERSPECTIVE: Stress is the natural by-product of human beings losing perspective of what this life is all about. Their psychological process has become far larger than the existential process. That is the fundamental source of all suffering. Everything around you may be going pretty well, but just one wrong thought or emotion could destroy everything. MIND YOUR THOUGHTS: Your mind is society's trashcan. Everyone who passes by stuffs something into your head. You have no choice about what to take, and what to discard. If you take another look at this knowledge, you will realise it's just something that is expected from you; it has nothing to do with who you are. APPRECIATE REALITY: Life is about making the most of your reality, knowing it absolutely, and experiencing it just the way it is. There's no real need to distort it. If your thoughts and emotions seem important, your whole attention will focus right there. But that is a psychological reality, not existential. Stress is not showered upon us, it is manufactured. DON'T PURSUE HAPPINESS: Today, we seek happiness so vigorously that we threaten the very existence of our planet. Don't be in pursuit of happiness; instead, know how to appreciate and express it. If you look back, you will find that the most beautiful moments in your life were those in which you were expressing your joy - not seeking it. TRANSFORM WHAT'S WITHIN: The quality of your life is not determined by the clothes you wear or the bank balance you hold. Rather, it depends upon how peaceful and joyous you are inside. People deprived of basic needs may be physically miserable, and therefore in need to rectify their circumstances. But the needs of most others are not decided by what they have, but how they are at that moment. GET YOUR MIND TO RELAX: Let's look at the various factors that influence us from dawn to dusk. If you did not sleep well last night, even your morning could be bad. As it's the level of relaxation that makes all the difference, it is necessary to keep your system relaxed in a way that activity doesn't take a toll on it. You could be physically exhausted, but it wouldn't stress you out in any way. Simple yoga can help.

Hello, beautiful people today on the Vitality Feed we have Paula James. Paula James is a movement specialist at the Art of Moving Well. She is a wealth of information and I'm thoroughly impressed with her knowledge with movement and I can't wait to dive into this today and share with you all of her knowledge to help you go throughout your day, working in a better posture. Please help me welcome P aula James. Hello, Paula. Hello, Caroline. Thank you, it's so nice to be here with you. Paula, can you just go through your background a little bit ? Sure, Caroline, thank you. It's such a pleasure to be here with you today. So I didn't start out in movement at all. I was a literature major and a freelance musician and having a marvelous time, with music and culture. And then I was in a minor vehicle accident that left me with 10 years of low back and neck pain. So I made the rounds of doctors and chiropractors and PTs, a whole bunch of professionals, and I still hurt all the time. It was a few months of a regular yoga practice that took me out of pain. It was really learning how to move differently, how to distribute effort and movements throughout my body. And so I quit my day job and I went off to yoga teacher training and I, during that 10 years that I hurt, I really set the intention that wow, if I have to go through this for this long, but I didn't know how long it was going to be. It just kept going on. I thought, well, I at least want to map the territory so that I come out of it able to be useful to other people. So when I came out of pain, I went off to teacher training and then I started training in the Feldon Christ method. And so everything was great. I was teaching yoga. I was out of pain. I was training in some other things. And then I was driving home one day from the studio and I watched an older woman cross the street and a few yards up on the sidewalk. She tripped up. And she didn't get up right away. So I parked and I went over to sit down next to her. It was the second time in a couple of weeks that she had fallen and it really came home to me. How so many of the things that I took for granted, not everybody has, and this woman wasn't likely to put on spandex and come to a yoga studio. And even if she did, I wasn't sure what I had that would really meet her. So I started shifting my focus for training to look at well, what's going on with arthritis with multiple sclerosis, with stroke survivors, with the pelvic diaphragm. And I shifted from teaching at a yoga studio to teaching at a rec department so that I got a different, you know, a wider cross section of the population. So I really been looking at well, what, what do we know from movement and alignment that will help people who've got real pain or limitations bridge back to being able to be active. And what have we got that will allow people with arthritis, osteoporosis to continue moving and exercising safely. So that another couple of decades from now they're still mobile because there's no value in pushing really hard now for the sake of burning calories and then doing irreparable joint damage so that you're not able to walk later or you're managing chronic pain. So I'm really looking at that longevity piece. How can people restore movement and ability and how can they remain safely active for the longterm? I mean, we're living like 80, 90 years now. How do you prep for that? And hence why you're on The Vitality Feed. Basically to sum that up, you took your mess, and you made it your message, took action, and now you're spreading your message to help others. I have the best job. I get to meet people in their tender moments and together we get to find things that help resolve that. That they can really be out in the world again, doing things they enjoy. It's just, it's really fun. That is a very fulfilling job for sure. Tell us a little bit about that statistics of the lack of movement, because I feel like there's an epidemic especially since all this pandemic . So, you know, it's interesting, I did a little looking into statistics in preparation for today, and I don't know if these are updated for, since the pandemic, but then the national institutes of health estimates that 25% of all north Americans suffer from chronic pain and that's across socioeconomic measures and including children That was when I was looking for statistics, I found some from earlier years. So in, in 2012, which is a, now, you know, a while ago that the NIH estimated that about 14% of adults in the United States had neck pain or problems, 20% with low back pain. 22% with arthritic conditions. And in general, any musculoskeletal pain disorder was 54%. Like, if you don't know, if you don't interact with people around pain, this is what surprises me. Then you don't know. Cause people, you know, they might say, oh, my neck hurts a little bit. Yeah. I talked to people around physical pain all the time, and I can run it like an auction, you know, go into a group. Who's got neck pain. How about shoulder pain? Low back. How about knees? Hands go up all over the place. That's hysterical. You don't interact with people around that they don't know because nobody wants you to know that everyone wants to pretend everything is fine because they don't want to be perceived as weak and they don't want to not get invited to events. That's true. That is true. I guess most of the time we'll do try to hide that kind of thing, but it's amazing today, more than ever, because so many of our activities are stagnant. And I even noticed that with my kids growing up at sporting events, the big sisters and brothers would be doing the events, but the little they all hung around the outlets and it broke my heart because they weren't moving. They weren't out in the parking lot, throwing the football. They were sitting there playing games with each other, fighting over the plug and it's like, our bodies were meant to move. So thank God for people like you, because we need to get this country back into shape. Yeah. And that's one of the things that I'm hearing consistently from folks. Until the shutdown in, in March of 2020, I was teaching 12 classes a week in person. I saw about a hundred people a week. And then when everything shut down last March, I shifted to teaching online. And so I know because I've stayed in touch with a lot of the people, even though that did not continue with me over zoom, you know, a lot. They were going out for walks or to the gym. And also a lot of them were seeing people like massage therapists or acupuncturists or chiropractors. And of course, all that went out the window in the early days of the pandemic. So. Any of the extra complimentary care, anything that people have been getting to help them manage was gone. And, and then a lot of folks were working from home, so they didn't necessarily have a good ergonomic workstation. They were using their laptop sitting on the sofa and, and like you say, not, not getting out and moving very much. So I think any statistics I have from the NIH, if there, before. You know, a month ago, they're probably way out of date as far as what the current reality is like. I'm sure there's going to be its own epidemic of, of pain management. It's really kind of scary. And I think the average person has gained at least 15 to 20 pounds as well. It's a sad state of affairs. Well, and I think too, the amount standing. So like one of my longtime students, um, is a high school teacher and I'm familiar with her posture because she's been, she's been coming to my classes for years, but she hasn't been coming since the shutdown because now she's teaching high school over zoom. But I've seen her a couple of times out in the world and her posture is much slumpy lumpier. Now she used to teach, standing up when she was teaching in person. And I'm sure she's mostly teaching, sitting down right now. And just, a lot of the uprightness really, you know, being in line with the axis of gravity right over her feet has, uh, it's, it's just really shifted in a way. That's not setting her up for a good next five or 10 years. I think I might've shared with you I've had back surgery. Um, it was really for nerve damage because I was completely losing my left, left leg sensation from my hip to my toes. Yeah, no, never thought I'd agreed to back surgery, but the surgeon I had was super, super conservative. And he didn't do a lot of work in there. He just basically fixed the nerves. So I still have my three herniated disc, but I, when I worked in corporate, I petitioned the first standup desk. Well, if they offered me a standup desk, of course, they had to offer everyone stand up desk and the general manager used to walk by and he used to say, I spent thousands of dollars on stand-up desks and nobody uses them, but you. And I literally would stand up seven hours of the day. Yeah, it takes off, I don't remember the exact percentage, but it takes off a significant amount of pressure off your spine when you stand up. And I went home with less pain, which is what it's all about. Well, can look at this in the summit when I have the opportunity to share screen and hold up a skeleton and do visuals. The, um, so I used to be a musician, right? And if you think about any string instrument, it doesn't no matter how good you are, how hard you try, how much you practice if the instruments out of tune, you can't make it sound good. And sitting shortens the tissues in the front of the hips and lengthens the tissues in the back. And it doesn't matter how expensive or fancy your chair is or how well you're sitting up. You are setting yourself up for that kind of tuning and standing, has you in a much better balance of the tissue length front and back of the hips. Now, there are going to be some things again that we can look at in the summit about how can you stand up so that you're standing well and you're not creating new troubles. But, um, boy, I stand up as much as I can when I'm, when I'm working on the computer at home, because I feel less tired at the end of the day. Right. I'm less achy. And I'm less tired, if I stand rather than sit. It really is about this tissue length. So if muscles on one side of the joint are too short, then the muscles on the other side will be too long and they'll all be tight. You won't have as good blood flow. You won't have as much responsiveness. You'll just be in kind of a clench. And when the muscles are at their just right length, you're at the best place for having muscles that are supple, responsive, having good circulation, no trigger points, nothing pinching on a nerve. You're just in you're, you're just in a good tone for the tissue so that everything works well. So being too short and too long is going to create tension. And then that tension will interfere with circulation of blood, of lymph, of nerve messages. It's not an optimal situation. Not at all, it sounds painful. And speaking of which, what do most people complain about for pains or aches; like the three biggest issues ? So I'm teaching weekly classes right now on zoom and I kind of run some of them as an improv. And I just ask at the beginning of class, you know, so what do we need tonight? Who are there any body parts, any functions that need attention and the big winners are usually neck and low back. And since the arch of the neck is really closely related to the art to the low back, I really consider those the same request. You might be feeling the trouble more in one place or the other, but it's the same imbalance and it's the same set of activities that's going to address both and then hips and shoulders and then knees. And so those are the big winners that I hear. That makes sense. I totally agree with that. I tell people when I coach, I'm like little things, like, instead of looking down at your phone and when you're reading, looking down at your laptop, raise that up so that your eyes are parallel, and then you're not craning your neck because you just, I don't think people realize if you do this stuff, hours and hours every day, day after day, what kind of effect that's going to have on you longterm. Right. And you know, one of the effects that it has is actually on your bones. There are, there are images that are just scary, especially of young people cause they change faster that are actually growing, like horny deposits at the base of the skull because the head forward posture is so great. You will deposit bone in response to pressure. And it could be the pressure of a push or the pressure of the pull. And if your head is forward so that the tissues are pulling at the back of the head to keep your head from falling down, you will actually deposit extra bone back there. So yeah, you can change the shape of your bony structure, as a result of posture, how you're sending pressure through and boy, well, you could change it back, but you might not live long enough to reverse some of those changes. And that would take a lot of effort, right? So you're, you're then going to be left with how do you, with the soft tissue team, you have managed the new shape of bones and you shaped those bones from postures. That just blew my mind. Holy cow. That is, that is crazy. It just makes sense. Your body is an interesting, how it adapts to the pressure of your head leaning forward all the time. I did not know that. Wow. That is so interesting. What do you think about stretching? Stretching, cold stretching, warm? Like what, what is your opinion on it that, you know, what I'm much more interested in is to give a reset to the tissues? Um, so yeah, so before I was a movement teacher, I was a literature major and so I tend to relate to a lot of things. Situations in terms of characters, if your muscles have been holding you in a specific shape for awhile individual muscles might think they're on a mission to maintain a certain length. For example, if you're slumpy and your shoulders are forward, your pectoralis muscles might have concluded that it's their job to keep the upper arm close to the sternum. So now if you go in there right away and try to stretch, you basically setting up a fight and you're trying to ask that muscle to fail at its perceived mission. If you use the other arm to pull that upper arm in closer to the sternum so that you slack in those muscles, in the front of the chest, the pectoralis major. And if you hold that slack for a minute, the muscles conclude. Oh, mission accomplished. Okay. and I don't have to do the work, someone else is taking it over and now the spindle cells reset and they're ready for a new idea. And so now you can go into inviting length and stretching. But I think to, um, to just immediately jump into stretching or strengthening, you're setting up unnecessary conflict and a much kinder way is to go in and reset the tissues. It's very gentle. It doesn't take a lot of time. And then your arms and legs will feel much lighter. You'll be much more available for an upright torso and the muscles will be much more available to work together as a team. So then you can go about your run or your workout in the gym or anything, and you'll have a much more available and coherent team. That is also some new information for me. That is really cool. Wonderful. I took a risk because I have a set of these slackening activities for the hips in particular that I did with my adaptive class last week. And, um, and that's a chair class, so we mostly do things sitting in chairs in there, but I asked them to stand up for a good chunk of class. And I had someone email me that evening saying I'm standing straighter now than I have in eight years and was less pain. Wow. Yeah. And the other people say that they had less pain in their hips and today, cause we're doing this interview also on a Tuesday, a couple hours after I met with that group again, um, they wanted to review that same sequence of things because so many of them got such good results last week. So we, it is, a way of working with the tissues. That's very friendly and gentle and available. Even for people who are very compromised. Like I have people with multiple sclerosis in there and hip replacements and all sorts. But I've also had people who come in like one young man that would come to class with his mom and then go to the CrossFit gym. And he said his best CrossFit workouts were always on Tuesdays after he'd had a gentle class with me. That doesn't surprise me whatsoever because I a firm believer in what you put into things is what you get out, with movement and like I say, a reset, I'm going to have to learn about this reset, cause my curiosity is way peak. Oh yay. So, most people are always trying to get the best chair. Can you share your thoughts a good chair? Yeah. So I'd be delighted to look at this in the summit. It's, you know, images of good chairs and, and good sitting postures. But what I really want to get across is, well, first of all, you need to be sitting well, you can slump on any chair, no matter how expensive or fancy or how many seconds. Adjustable things it has. So you need to use yourself well, and you really need to have at least three to four good sitting options. There's not one perfect way to sit that will solve all your problems. After 10 to 15 minutes in any shape, some of the muscles will start to fatigue. So at again of the summit, we can look at what are some of the guidelines for a good sitting posture. And then you're going to want to have several in rotate among them. And I really like. We'd love people to be rotating between sitting and standing , because that is really going to be the best of all. But if you are sitting like I've gone to all day trainings that are not movement trainings and we're sitting all day. And so I have several different postures and I usually bring something to sit on to raise me up against and to lean back against the chair. Cause hotel banquet chairs are not any great example of ergonomics support. So I just do a little preparation to take good care of myself. And then on lunch breaks, I can go for a walk. And at the end of the day, I'm ready to go play. Right. I don't have to recover from the day of training. I'm from the event world and you're right about those chairs that are they're hard. Um, I'm an event junkie, so when I go to an event, my main objective is to get an end chair because I will go stand at the wall and come back and sit at the wall and then come back. So I, that is my goal is to always get an end chair. So I'm not disrupting people. I do the same thing either to get an end or to get a back row and especially right in even just emotional. Is, there's a lot of information coming at me. I feel like I can just handle it better if I'm standing up on my own two feet. If I'm sitting down the, the chance for me to feel overwhelmed is greater. If I'm standing and shifting my weight from foot to foot and I'm just more upright, then I feel a little more like, you know, I'm rising to meet the occasion instead of getting just deluge coming down on topof me. Yeah, I agree with that. More like a power pose. You're standing up you're at attention. I, that makes sense. I just wanted to share with you one of the things for events that they're trying to implement in the world is varied seating. So, the objective is we used to do bean bags, standing tables, and then your typical rows of chairs at an event. The new age concept was to offer the three styles of seating. I think it's hard to get focused when you're just in the same exact spot for me, it is, I need to move and vary it up. Otherwise you just, I don't know. I kind of fall asleep and you know, it's easy if you just keep moving around a little bit, it keeps the blood circulating, I guess. For me, I just get cold in there. I'm just sitting still on a banquet chair in a, in a hotel room that's cooled off to keep me awake and I'm just cold. And then when I'm cold, my muscles are tensing up. And, for me, for attending events, the pandemic has been a real blessing because I can do a lot of it from home and I can be standing and I can be wiggling around and I have temperature control. And so it's made a lot of things very available, in a very comfortable way. I, agree, I like to have multiple screens cause I can watch on one and type on the other, so yeah, there are a lot of benefits. Paula is going to be appearing as part of my summit and, she will be of course, presenting on the art of moving well , she is the movement specialist. So I'm excited about this because I think we all need this, human beings are meant to move, we're gathers and herders and hunters, and we need to move and we just do not and it's a sad state of affairs presently. So what's a thing or two that we can start implementing? Well, one really quick, simple thing is your eyes are meant to move too. And so one of the real downsides of the pandemic and doing everything online is you're not looking at people across a room or down a hallway, and you're not walking across the parking lot to get to another place. So to give your eyes some breaks during the day, and be looking out the window, look across a Vista, right? Like it have a focal length. That's more than two feet in front of you and, and allow. Allow the eye muscles to adjust to that, get some sunshine for your eyes. To let your eyes rest on something in front of you, but be very aware of what you can perceive with your peripheral vision, so that you're aware more of the context and not only focused because that, that sharp focus , goes a little bit more with the sympathetic nervous system being engaged, right? That you're very focused where as the parasympathetic system, which is set up more for rest and digest and repair of tissues allows you to take in a bigger context. So if you can, a few times during the day, Well, certainly look out the window, give your, gave yourself a distance in a natural view, but also, um, just be aware of what you can proceed with your peripheral vision. It, um, it will be good for your eyes. It'll be good for your posture. And it also just be good for the nervous system to shift into. Oh, right. There's a larger context to my world. Not only this problem that I'm focusing on. That's so cool. I love that, that I never would have guessed that in a million years, you're just such a wealth of information for me. You know, and if I was going to get one more, I would say to, to take a few moments now and then to let your breathing be unhurried because not, not to necessarily be bossy and try to breathe, especially slowly or deeply or anything, but to allow yourself to breathe in and keep breathing in until it feels complete. So that you're not rushing the breath cycle to breathe out and keep breathing out until that feels complete. If a pause arises, allow all the time you need for the pause, because again, it's another cue for the nervous system that there's some leisure. There's the luxury of time here again. Quicker breathing tends to go with danger with the sympathetic nervous system being in charge. And even if you're rushing, especially if you're driving, right, you're not going to get anywhere faster by breathing faster. So even more stuck at a red light, you can be breathing slowly and then you don't have to arrive late as a crazy person. You can arrive at whatever time you do calm and at least well-regulated yourself. And so, um, just taking a few opportunities during the day to let your breathing be unhurried, to take all the time you need. For each moment in the breath cycle can also help give a big reset. That's a fantastic idea. Good point about your breath and something that I've noticed for me right before I got a breathing app was, um, I would hold my breath and I was not conscious of it until I started listening to all this information about breath work, which we will have, a meditation guru coming to the summit. We can look at this in the, in the summit because I can hold up the skeleton, but, and show you. I've been fascinated, the more that I regulate the tone of the tissues in the front and back of my hips, the deeper and easier my breathing because there are so many connections along the muscle and connective tissue between the back of the legs, back of the hips, up the spine, where the ribs connect and up that deep front between the hip flexors, the front of the spine, the breathing diaphragm. And so the more, I actually restore balanced tone to the front and back of the hips, the easier and more free my breathing becomes. You're like Google for the body movement. I seriously this has been amazing. I've learned so much . I can't wait to dive deeper with you during this summit. So my last signature question here for you, Paula, if there's one thing that you can eliminate from this world, what would it be and why? And it doesn't necessarily have to relate to our conversation. I said, I'm going to give you free reign of whatever you wish to say. Well, doesn't not relate. It's the impulse to have power over. And that is partly, people to people, right. Person to person, the, the impulse to have power over another, I think is a way to not and not create with them. So there can be power with, and you can be powerful as an individual, but, but that desire to dominate and the way I see it, and in my work with individuals with pain is, is that idea of, you know, mind over matter, this power over the body, trying to boss it around is such a stupid way to approach this marvelous, intelligent organism that you could work with beautifully. Um, but I certainly have seen a huge difference in the quality of my relationships with other people who are willing to do power with, and we can both negotiate how we're going to interact and what's going to go on and the power over people who are usually stuck, if I use the writing analogy, they want to be the writer and the director and the producer of any interaction. And I have a bit part, and I'm supposed to read my part of the script that they wrote. Um, but other people who are more into power sharing, we can actually create things and there can be a lot of fun. Better for everybody. Again, then Paula, good food for thought, for sure. I loved that, hmm. Interesting. Very interesting. Please tell, our amazing listeners where they can connect with you. And I will also include this in the information for the show notes. Fantastic. I have a website art of moving well.com and I am on Facebook. I have a Facebook page art of moving well with Paula James and a Facebook group, which they can find by checking into the page. And also I'm on LinkedIn, Paula James art of moving well. Oh, right. And I want to thank you, Paula, for coming on the vitality feed today, you have been incredible, I mean, the amount of information that you shared and that isn't even privy to. I love learning, so this was stupendous for me. I can't thank you enough for taking the time to share, your story and your knowledge with our audience. I really appreciate you. And, I am so excited that you are going to be joining me for my Home Office Hackathon to share with all our remote workers out there , some great hacks to make their day less painful and more productive the in their space. We do promise to offer some good tools and resources for everybody listening and until next time my friends remember,"Life has no remote get up and change it yourself."

Deirdre Breakenridge is an author, entrepreneur, and CEO at Pure Performance Communications. As a 30-year veteran in public relations (PR) marketing and branding, she's worked with senior leaders at Fortune 500 companies. Deirdre is the author of seven business books, including Answers for Modern Communicators which was recently named one of the 100 best storytelling books of all time by BookAuthority. Deirdre is also the host of the podcast, Women Worldwide, which is in its sixth year and has nearly 2 million downloads. Today, we're going to discuss modern public relations and how it works alongside marketing. Public Relations Then and Now Bill Gates said, “If I was down to my last dollar, I would spend it on public relations.” PR is a great way to build awareness and credibility while protecting our reputation through the media, social media, and within our communities. Our goal should be to find the positive messages and stories in our organizations and share them with consumers. Since PR is such an effective way to build our businesses, we need to be aware of how the industry is changing. When Deirdre entered the public relations industry, it looked very different than what it does today. Traditional PR was about writing press releases to hand out to news outlets, who would then share our story. However, this approach of trying to control the messages sent out to consumers doesn't work as well with modern media. Our stories, whether good or bad, can be spread on social media in seconds. The Pew Research Center found that 86% of Americans get their news from their smartphones or computers, over radio, television, and print publications. This means consumers don't have to rely on news outlets to learn about our companies anymore. They have Google. They have Facebook. While 68% of Americans still get news from news websites and apps (traditional PR can still work), nearly just as many look to social media. According to a study, 53% of Americans say they get news from different social media platforms (Source: Pew Research Center). A news outlet may wait for a press release, but social media doesn't wait around for an email to share a story. PR professionals need to adjust to the fact that people have a wide variety of media outlets and platforms where they can get their stories. Today, many stories don't flow out of a company's communication department. The stories are created inside communities on social media. We don't have as much control over the stories that get shared as we did before. Instead, people are citizen journalists and the power of the story lies in their hands-on social media. Modern media has become increasingly interconnected with marketing. 5 Ways to Effectively Implement Modern Public Relations Here are five ways our companies and businesses can effectively use modern public relations. Monitor Social Media Often a story about our brand or company will find its way on social media before we know about it. Social media monitoring is essential to see how we're perceived by our audience. We need to watch for the negative comments so we can catch them early on and find a way to amend them, while also watching for the positive comments so we can learn what stories our customers resonate with and continue to share them. It only takes a few negative comments or missteps for our image to be impacted and our reputation to go down the drain. If we aren't monitoring our social media channels, we won't know when a negative story about our brand is circulating the web, and we won't be able to take action to fix it. With modern PR, it's our responsibility to monitor everything affecting our brand. There are different tools and platforms we can use to monitor how our brand is perceived on social media. Deirdre recommends the free plan of Hootsuite. It can help us see who's talking about our brand on social channels and what the conversation points are about. Deirdre also recommends using Notified by Intrado, another platform that lets us monitor digital conversations. Notified can help us craft our stories and reach out to journalists through the platform, monitor and measure how well we're doing, and see how much engagement our brand has. Talkwalker is another social listening tool Deirdre finds useful. Talkwalker has an AI-powered analysis that provides real-time insights into what's happening on all social channels and online media. Be Active on Social Media We shouldn't just monitor social media. We should be actively engaged on all platforms to share positive stories about our brand. We have to realize that many stories develop away from the media. Even major media outlets keep an eye on social media for new stories. If we aren't putting positive stories and messages about our brand out onto the world wide web, who will? One of our main goals should be to enhance our online presence. As we become active on social media, this is where we begin to see a huge overlap in PR and marketing. With marketing, we want to create content to market our brand and with PR we want to create content to build our reputation. With both, we want to build relationships with our customers. The majority of our customers are likely active on social media platforms. We can engage with them through our content to build those relationships. Build Relationships We should develop good relationships with media outlets and influencers. When it comes to getting our stories out in the media, it helps to have good contacts. When we've developed good relationships with producers, editors, or journalists at media outlets such as CNN, New York Times, or other local news sources, it is easier to reach them and get our story out. Even if a story is released on social media first, we can bring in experts who can comment on the stories. We can foster relationships by getting to know editors or journalists really well. Once we know and understand the agenda of a journalist or outlet, it's a lot easier to creatively pitch a story to promote our expertise. It's important to remember that, when we want to be in the news or want to be covered, it's not just about our agenda. It's about their agenda as well. We have to think about what the media wants to share and why they want to share it. Sometimes media outlets may release a negative story about our company. This is another great reason why we should be developing relationships. If a company releases a story that will reflect badly on our brand, we can get in contact with them sooner to make amends if we already have a relationship with them. I have found that recently, a lot of what PR practitioners do is repair reputations. They need to know when to make comments on stories and when to leave them alone. Not only should our PR practitioners focus on building relationships with the media, but they should also start building relationships with influencers. According to a Global Communications Report, 60% of PR executives believe influencer marketing is becoming a vital part of PR (Source: MediaKix). We can use our PR department to help reach out to influencers to share our brand messages. Since public relations is about credibility, public opinion, and shifting opinions, it is great to align with other influencers who have credible brands. Whoever we align with will be a brand representative. Work with the Marketing Team PR and marketing often overlap. Teamwork between these two critical components of our business can be the difference between success and failure. Search engine optimization used to be separate from PR, but this has changed. PR is all about storytelling and content. In fact, “80% of PR professionals and marketers believe the future is digital storytelling.” (Source: mediakix.com) We have to understand how we are tagging our content and what descriptions we are using. We also need to be on the same page with marketing. Who is using our content? How are they optimizing? How do we optimize together? When a campaign is rolling out through marketing, the best thing the marketing department can do is have the public relations team on board and ready to gauge public perception over a campaign. We shouldn't have to guess what's going on. We don't want to have “silo working” within our organizations. Silo working happens when different departments don't communicate with other individuals they work with. This can create a huge problem as it leads to misunderstandings and confusion, reducing efficiency. Deirdre said we can help break down work silos by helping our PR and marketing teams understand what each other's jobs are. Deirdre said that she once had a training session with PR and marketing and found that each department didn't know what each other's day looked like. To fix this, it helps to have a buddy system where we share what we do or walk a day in someone else's shoes. This can open our eyes to what others are doing, why they're doing it, and how we can help each other. We should have closer internal communication. Collaboration and innovation have to start with the entire team. Be Conscious of What We Say and Do Above all else, if we want to have a good brand reputation, we have to actually be good. We need to make sure we are staying positive, staying true to our brand, and providing value to our customers. A news outlet can't write a bad story about us if there isn't one. They also can't write a good story about us if there aren't any. Deirdre believes that modern PR is a responsibility. What we do and say is part of this responsibility. It's essential to know what goes on around our brand. It's as if we're in a fishbowl. Everything we do is seen by everyone else, emphasizing the need to be open and transparent. Our stories must show ethics and good judgment. In the current saturated media landscape, we want to be the experts who bring helpful information. A PR executive can help our company say and do the right things. They help us interact with the media and can provide advice on touchy subjects. For example, in 2020, the Black Lives Matter Movement became so powerful and important, that many businesses decided to come out and release a statement supporting it. With such controversial and deeply emotional topics, our brand needs to be careful about what we say and don't say. A PR specialist can help us with that. Key Takeaways Thank you so much Deirdre for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: PR has changed. Many stories no longer flow out of a company's communication department. The stories are created inside communities on social media. Social media monitoring is essential to see how we're perceived. We should be actively engaged on social media to share positive stories about our brand. We should develop good relationships with media outlets and influencers. It's better to have 10 really good relationships with media professionals than to have a list of 100 connections that barely know us. PR and marketing leaders should collaborate and lead the way for their teams to collaborate. It’s Thursday the 4th of February. Welcome to the fifth bulletin from Porty News We were delighted to read that Handicabs are offering FREE transport for people with mobility issues who’ve an appointment to get their vaccine. This applies to anyone who has difficulty getting out and about due to age, disability or heath issues. Usually to use Handicabs, you need to be registered with the charity but that won’t apply if you’re going to get your jag. Booking is essential and is subject to availability so they recommend calling 447 9949 as soon as you get your appointment. However, when you do make the booking, you’ll be asked about how you’re feeling; whether you’ve any of the symptoms associated with Covid-19 (high temperature, a continuous cough or if you’ve noticed any change in taste and smell) and finally if you’re self-isolating. If you answer yes to any of these questions, I’m afraid you’ll be refused. If you’re involved with a community or third-sector (ie – charity) group, you’ve got two weeks to apply for one of this year’s Portobello and Craigmillar Community Grants. The fund is worth over £22,000 and groups can apply for grants of up to £2,500. This will enable local communities to (for example) start–up new projects, buy a new piece of equipment or raise awareness of the group’s activities. The aim is to fund small scale projects that the enhance quality of life and complement other improvements in the area. You need to get your application in by noon on Friday 19th of February and the funding panel hope to make a decision early in March. You can get in touch by using the email address in the transcript of this bulletin communitygrantfundpcnn@ea.edin.sch.uk I’ve only just realised, thanks to a post from Portobello High School, that it Children’s’ Mental Health Week. During the week, youngsters have been encouraged for example to "Be Active". It’s perhaps easier for them to get out and about than other city schools as Porty is surrounded by lots of beauty spots, but, if they can't get outside, then the school has links to a variety of fitness options. The young folk are also being asked to "Give to Others" as a way of creating connections with other people, something the school reminds us that can be incredibly rewarding Finally today, some excellent news from Portobello Library – well, it’s sharing the glory with Edinburgh Libraries which has won an award from Press Reader. As they point out, it’s all thanks to “our lovely library users who have read more newspapers & mags on Press Reader than any other library service this year”. If you don’t know about the service, they helpfully provide a link (which again you’ll find in the transcript) – and to log in, you’ll need to have a library card and a PIN. https://yourlibrary.edinburgh.gov.uk/web/arena/pressreader That’s it for today. Stan & Josh discuss the Local Church's tendency to slack off of ministry during and because of the COVID pandemic. This episode includes practical ideas and suggestions on how to reengage your community and avoid the "Do Nothing" mindset: Find a few of the shut-ins, widows, and single moms in your neighborhoods and local communities and care for them. Bring them groceries, make phone calls for encouragement, take care of their lawns at no charge, etc. Round up some folks who are willing to feed the homeless in your city, town, or your local community. Pass out bottled water and Gospel tracts at local gas stations. Visit your local jail and get to know the chaplain or sheriff's chaplain and ask to be put on the regular rotation so that you can encourage the inmates. Stop by the local rehab centers and ask if you can meet with and regularly disciple some of the men or women in the programs with Scripture and prayers. Stop by the local mom 'n pop business in your area (auto repair shops, boutiques, restaurants, etc.) and ask to meet the owners. Set up a time to come by during the week and pray for him/her and their business. Too many times I hear "Today is Chris' race to get in the break". It's really hard to always make that happen, and then if he doesn't make the initial break, where does the team go from there? Bike racing is insanely dynamic, so picking your squad's winner before the race is not the best idea for the team. Give this a listen and let me know some other tips that you give new racers in terms of how to race on a team, ESPECIALLY when 10 guys on the same team are there to race. If you have BIG NUMBERS, BE ACTIVE! Attack early, counterattack when the moves get brought back, and when you have numbers in the break, let THAT one stick! If you have numbers, you guys should win A LOT. Brendan@EVOQ.BIKE https://youtu.be/EjwE8gwL5Kc

It is time to stand up! Object to Senate 'Unanimous Consent' that accelerates Senate proceedings!!! Filibuster!!! One Senator saying 'I Object' obliterates the unanimous consent and forces the Senate to proceed much more slowly through its business, if it can proceed at all. - with frequent 'I Objects' being expressed by patriotic Senators! We must use the tools we were given 'to protect the minority from being trampled by an irresponsible majority' - as Indivisible says.' We can gum up the Senate until Inauguration Day by using these tools we have been given. To prevent this unfair Supreme Court hearing from coming to fruition. We can fight unfairness, as in what happened to Merrick Garland's March 2016 Supreme Court nomination never having a hearing 8 months before Election Day 2016 because it was characterized as being too close to the election by Mitch McConnell and the Republicans. But the Republicans wiping that act away as if it never happened. Thinking they can get away with what they are doing in the Senate right now. Which can be slowed and driven to a halt! From Kahlil Gibran: 'Strength and tolerance are partners.' 'We all admire strength, but the majority is most impressed by it when it is without form and stability. Few are those who respect strength when it is clearly defined and has meaningful ends.' Today's poem is 'Halt The Hearing - Object!!! and Filibuster!!!' Inspired - and the how-to-do-it laid out - by the activists in Indivisible. To call your Senators (2 for every state) just call the Congressional Switchboard 202-224-3121. They will put you through to one of your Senators at a time if you tell them which state you reside in. Be Active! Our country is at stake!!!
As our struggles with everyday life get harder and harder, due to Covid and the aftermath of the first wave, there are increasing numbers of videos and posts on social media, sharing messages of positivity and those being successful, but, are they too much and insensitive to what the majority of people are going through?Whilst having inspirational and positive leaders are very much needed, now more than ever, surely those who put content out on social media should take responsibility for the specific content of their message, know their specific audience and be wary of those who may have underlying health conditions, regardless of this being physical or mental health conditions?Who better to mull this over with, than Mr Positive himself, who actually has "Positivity Breeds Positivity" within his email signature, Sean Molino from Forces Fitness and the Veterans Awards, Wales, England and Scotland.During the show, Sean talks about, The Five Ways to Wellbeing, these are: Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Keep Learning and Give. These are simple and proven actions that individuals and workplaces can introduce to help people find balance, build resilience and boost mental health and wellbeing. If you are impacted by anything from today's show, then please DO phone the Samaritans on 116 123 OR text SHOUT to 85258, please do NOT ignore your emotions and negative thoughts, it is your body saying, it is time to act!

First of all, this is a spontaneous recording. So, you'll find that some of the things that I said you might don't really understand... Don't worry, me too! Btw, The Mental Health Foundation has developed the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’, a set of actions that can improve our mental (and overall) health. I find that this list is helpful and so I modified it and apply it to how to overcome depression: #1 Go Give: your time, your words, your presence #2 Be Active: do what you can, enjoy what you do, move your mood #3 Keep Learning: embrace new experiences, see opportunities, surprise yourself #4 Take Notice (or Be Grateful): appreciate the little things in life, savor the moment #5 Make Connect: talk and listen, be there, feel connected and... #6 Renew Your Thinking: "Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise" (Philippians 4:8) #ServeToLead #DepressionIsDefeated

People are looking for raw milk but why is raw milk so hard to find? That’s the topic of today’s podcast. It’s a complicated topic and I’ll break it down into three categories as well as make suggestions regarding what you can do about it. I’m very excited about today’s topic. Raw milk is a passion of mine. I hope all of you who are new listeners will enjoy this podcast. I appreciate your stopping by and welcome your feedback. And a warm welcome back to the veteran homestead-loving regulars who stop by the FarmCast every week. I appreciate you all so much. This podcast is for you. Let me know what you’d like to hear and I will make it happen. Today’s Show Homestead Life Updates Why is Raw Milk so Hard to Find? Hot Buttered Rum Mix Homestead Life Updates Will the heat never end? I think I’ve said this before, but I really don’t like the extremes of summer and winter. The cold seems to hang on forever in winter and the heat seems to hang on forever in summer. I’m so ready for fall. I’m ready for the leaves to turn. Fall in the Blue Ridge Mountains is glorious. The Weather Channel usually has a map that shows the progress of the leaves starting in upstate New Hampshire and Vermont and progressing all the way down the Appalachian Mountain chain to Alabama. It’s a big tourist time for us. Lots of fall festivals and activities are planned. We were able to attend a dairy livestock show in Stuart, Virginia (our county seat) that is heralded as one of the best in the state. I have only a couple of updates on the Homestead. Today, Egwene, our 4 ½ month old Jersey heifer calf left our farm bound for a new home. I’m on pins and needles waiting to hear that she arrived safely. She is traveling all the way to New York. Her new owner seems very conscientious and I believe she will be in good hands. All four outside concrete block walls of the creamery are now complete. Next the inside concrete block walls, then the roof, plumbing, electrical, and gas. There will be inside walls and tile flooring. The windows and doors. So much to do. We take one step at a time and gradually the destination comes closer. On to today’s topic. Why Is Raw Milk So Hard to Find? The reasons are varied but seem to revolve around three things. It’s illegal in many places The risk of being on the radar of the USDA and/or FDA Legal ramifications if you are targeted I’ll also go over what you can do to help. But first, the reasons. It’s illegal in many places I’ve spoken of this before. I’ll do a recap of that information. Why it is illegal is another great question and a subject for another podcast. Today I want to talk about what’s legal and what’s not. And I also want to discuss how that affects your access, the consumer. The laws affect your ability to make your own informed choices about what you will feed your family. My grand nephew has problems with psoriasis that is relieved by drinking raw milk. I’ve had people tell me their body aches were lessened by drinking raw milk. Some children unable to drink pasteurized milk are perfectly fine with raw milk. I was contacted recently by someone interested in our herd share program. I was shocked to hear her say that her doctor told her that her daughter could drink raw milk. Most doctors tow the establishment line and don’t make any waves. Most often they tell you that your child will die from drinking raw milk. And sure, that’s great that the doctor said it’s okay, but where is she supposed to get that milk? Is everyone reduced to buying their own cow? That’s simply not practical. In only 12 out of 51 states and Washington DC can she just walk into the grocery store and buy raw milk for her child. If you don’t live in one of those 12 states, your options are already limited. The next easiest option is buying it directly from the farm. That is legal in 15 states. Can’t sell it in the grocery store but it can be purchased from your local farmer – if you can find one. They don’t do a lot of advertising. More on that later. The next level of navigating this intrusion into your right to choose the food you want for your family is the herd share agreement. That’s what we have here in Virginia and also in 10 other states. In four states, if the milk is labeled as “pet milk”, you might be able to get your hands on it. And the final blow to those who live in the last 9 states is they are barred from purchasing any raw milk. No pet exemption. No herd shares. Those folks have to travel to another state. Those are the last numbers I have. It may or may not be completely accurate. Political activity to change the laws is always going on – both for and against your right to choose the food for your family. And it goes beyond milk. So many of you also want yogurt, butter, cream, cream cheese and so on. The bottom line is that many of us want to make lifestyle choices that include traditional ways of eating. Unfortunately, when it comes to getting your milk straight from the cow the way Mother Nature made it, the government gets between you and your right to choose. The Risk of Being on the Radar of the USDA and/or FDA For small farms like ours, it’s best to remain low key. Aggressive advertising campaigns can bring unwanted attention from government officials as well as the original intent to serve more customers. Instead, we rely on small, personal interactions and word-of-mouth. Many times, people get into positions of power over others and, for whatever reason, they abuse it. Not all, of course. And not even a majority. But our contacts with other small farmers and farm organizations have kept us informed of the atmosphere that sometimes surrounds official inspection personnel. Even if you are following every regulation to the letter, they can find ways to make your life unbearable. For small farmers like us, the risk of showing up negatively on the radar of USDA officials or the FDA can be catastrophic. We are blessed to have a great relationship with our local VDACS/USDA dairy inspector. At least as far as I know we do. From the beginning we have done everything he has asked without complaint. We have shown him respect and he seems to have the same respect for us and what we are about in building this creamery. There is no need for additional interactions with USDA and/or FDA officials. Those tend to be the worst when it comes to wielding power over others. At least from what I’ve read that is the case. Relationships with more local people are always preferable. And if you happen to get on their radar for a legitimate problem (quickly corrected), you are forever in their sites. It is statistically plausible that during the life of every business mistakes that require quick action and procedural correction are going to occur. To illustrate I’ll tell a short story without names. A small dairy, operating for 15 or 20 years, had a problem with one of their cheeses. The problem was that one of their cheeses tested high for a particular bacterium. Being conscientious business owners, they had all of the procedures in place to track down where their cheese went and got it all recalled. They do a lot of wholesale, so there was a lot of it out there. Even small batch cheese can end up being hundreds of pounds of cheese distributed all over the country. In the end, no one was made ill. The recall was not initiated because of illness. Again, it was a cheese that failed a test conducted at regular intervals to ensure the safety of the cheese. The recall was a preventative measure. I can’t stress this enough. Even if a cheese fails a test, that does not mean that anyone will ever get sick from consuming it. This number or that number was high – the statistical possibility that the “bad” bacteria would grow was higher. Contrast that with all of the folks who are made ill – or worse die – from consuming contaminated spinach, lettuce, cantaloupe and factory farmed beef. Those recalls generally happen after many have become ill and/or someone has died. That is not the case with cheese. We catch it long before it becomes a problem. Regulations for testing are strict. Perhaps that’s why dairy products, raw and pasteurized, only make up 4% of reported food borne illnesses. Anyway, the FDA got involved because of the recall. Now that this small dairy is on the FDA radar, regularly scheduled visits are common. Worse are the surprise visits. The agents hover with their virtual clipboards in hand, watching every move. Their eyes are begging you to make a mistake. As you can imagine, many times there are no moves until they leave. When someone is examining your every action with a fine-toothed comb, sure that you are violating some statute, it is best to give them as little ammo as possible. And once you are on the radar, it continues. Where once you never saw anyone from the FDA, now it is a continuing possibility that will appear and make demands. Excessive amounts of cheese are tested. The agents truly spend an inordinate amount of time trying to find another problem. And perhaps this all sounds okay to you. Perhaps it sounds necessary. But for us, it is life or death for our business. We don’t want to take chances on someone with power having a bad day and looking to us as an outlet for their frustration or anger. Our number one goal is to make sure our cheese and other raw milk products are perfect in every way and to never wind up in the sites of a federal agency. The Financial and Legal Ramifications If You Are Targeted As a small farmer I can tell you, our operation may not have survived this kind of intrusion and scrutiny. Testing every single batch of cheese made and multiple wheels from that batch? That would be disaster for us. Some of our batches are single wheels. Usually no batch produces more than 3 wheels. If we had to send in one from every batch – well you begin to see the problem. The cost would be prohibitive. Testing that many cheeses would cost us 1/3 or more of our product intended for revenue. Due to information we have received from other farmers, we send our required to tests to VDACS and another to a third party. There are stories of small farmers having one bad test after another from their official USDA testing while the same milk tests fine via third party. Another result of getting on their radar. Additional tests cost money, but that is the cost of doing business in the dairy industry. What You Can Do I don’t want to sound all negative about this. Yes, today it is hard to find raw milk and raw milk products. There are reasons that these laws were put in place. Some are legitimate, though the knee-jerk response was harsh, and some are not legitimate. Some of the reasons are political and driven by the dairy lobby. As I said, I will cover that in another podcast. For now, this is what we have to work with and we are happy with our current situation. The laws in the state of Virginia allow us to help you by offering part of our herd to consumers. Access to raw milk and raw milk products is there for you. It is a bit inconvenient, but the health benefits of raw milk products are worth it. The demand for raw milk and raw milk products is growing by leaps and bounds. We are working to expand the availability of raw milk products and you can help too. But the laws are always under attack and pressure to be made stricter. While North Carolina just expanded their availability by allowing herd shares, other states and moving to restrict access and outlaw herd shares. One organization that helps farmers and consumers with many problems – access to raw milk being only one of them, though a large part of their focus, is the Farm to Consumer Organization. You can support them financially by becoming a member. Additionally, you can be on their mailing list and be informed about legislation that affects raw milk as well as other legal challenges that small farmers face. Be Active in Your Quest for Raw Milk Products There is one raw milk product that is available in the state of Virginia. No Yogurt, butter, or fresh cheese such as cream cheese. No not those. Only raw milk cheese can be legally sold to the public. The cheese must be aged greater than 60 days. For us, and most others, this is not a problem. None of our cheeses are worth a darn before 90 days, well beyond their 60-day minimum. Most of our cheeses are aged at least 6 months before they reach maturity. And they just get better from there. There are no other raw milk products that can be sold in the state of Virginia. Again, it’s the herd share program that gives you access to products such as yogurt, butter, cream and fresh cheeses like mozzarella or cream cheese. Last year there was a bill on the floor in Virginia that would have allowed an exemption for private homes to make yogurt to sell at farmer’s markets. This would have been similar to the current law that exempts baked goods that don’t require time or temperature control after preparation. There are a lot of do’s and don’ts and a limit to the dollar amount of gross sales. There were similar provisions in the bill to open the market to yogurt. Anyway, not enough people showed up in support of the bill and it failed to pass. Another organization in Virginia is VICFA – that is Virginia Independent Consumer and Farmers Association. They have an “action alert” registration form on their website. I’ll put links to both of these organizations in the show notes. Or you can look them up online. That’s Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Organization and VICFA, Virginia Independent Consumer and Farmer’s Association. Both are fighting for your right to choose raw milk products for your family. Hot Buttered Rum Mix This is a rich and delicious beverage. It can be made with or without alcohol so everyone can enjoy it! This is as large recipe that makes 52 servings. No problem though. It is a mix that stores well in the freezer. What You Need to Make the Mix 2 cups butter, softened 3 ¾ cups 10x powdered sugar 2 ¼ cups dark brown sugar, packed 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 quarts vanilla ice cream, softened What You Need to Make a Serving ¾ cup boiling water 1 to 2 tablespoons rum or brandy (optional) Ground cinnamon and nutmeg to taste ¼ cup butter mixture What to Do to Make the Mix Cream butter and sugars until smooth. Beat in vanilla and ice cream. Fill freezer containers. Store in freezer until needed. What to Do to Make a Serving Place ¼ cup butter mixture in a 10 or 12-ounce mug. Stir in boiling water and rum. Sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg to taste. Final Thoughts That’s it for today’s FarmCast. I hope your plans for the fall season are coming to fruition. It’s a lovely time of year to enjoy life. I know that for most people it’s hard to find raw milk today. But remember, that you can help by becoming informed, involved and invested in the laws in your state. You can make a difference. We have a right to choose the food and nutritional program we think best for ourselves and our families. Stand up and let your voice be heard. And let others know about our herd share program. Also, we’d love to hear from you. What raw milk product piques your interest? Maybe if there is a demand, we can add it to our list of services provided for our herd share owners. Let me know how you and your family like that Buttered Rum drink. Try it with our raw milk butter. You’ll be glad you did. In a follow up to a recent blog post on "Giving Referrals", Thom Singer talks in this episode about how to get referrals. Getting referrals is key to any entrepreneurs growing their business. As a professional speaker most of Thom's clients come from referrals. While he conducts outbound sales campaigns and works on SEO, almost all his business comes from word of mouth. This is the life blood of most small business people. Thom has recently joined a business group in Austin called BAP (Business Advisory Professionals) which is made up of some high quality people in a variety of industries that serve local and national clients. This is a structured referral group, but it is more than that - it is about relationships. Relationships are key to getting referrals. If you want more business from referral sources, you need to cultivate meaningful connections. Thom also talks about a book called " Renewable Referrals" by Joe Stec (and others) about this topic of creating partner referral programs that work. Joe is a BAP member who has a marketing agency, and a new friend of Thom's. 5 Tips for Getting Referrals 1. Give Referrals. And just give in general. Helping others achieve their goals will set the tone and others will want to help you, too. If you cannot remember the last time you sent a referral, why would you expect to ever get one? 2. Be Active in your Community. If you are the best kept secret in your city, you will go hungry. You have to show up if you want to be top of mind. 3. Respond, Follow up, and show gratitude. 4. Be Great at what you do. You have to do good work if you want people to sing your praises. 5. Ask for Referrals. If you do not remind people that you are seeking new opportunities, they may not come to that conclusion on their own. Let them know you want to work with other cool people. https://thomsinger.com/podcast/getting-referrals

► Claim Your Free YouTube Passive Income Course: https://goo.gl/mF2Ymi ► Join The Refusing to Settle Mastermind https://goo.gl/wsNnwu ► Free 11 Questions to Change Your Life http://refusingtosettle.com Today we're talking about the one thing EVERYONE watching needs.: The skill of breaking out of your comfort zone Real quick: this video intended to be a recap of strategies you already know — to serve as a reminder to use them! I'd recommend you find 1-3 of these strategies and test them out. Also, most of these strategies are from the NEW 30-Day Coaching for MyBestJournal2.0 program. If you like content like this, you'll love what's inside the 30-Day Coaching Program! Okay, now to those tips :) 1. Try Something ANYTHING. New — find your passion by just trying things. Embrace the unknown. i.e. Was I passionate about men's hair products? Was I passionate about talking about internet marketing/digital courses? — I’d argue the obscure passions (not everyone’s doing or has) are the ones that FIND YOU. No great time to travel the world — you have to go for it. No Great time to start a business — go for it. Who’s permission do you need? As you expand, so does your capacity! Elastic. You are elastic and malleable. 2. Dynamic Tension: Rubber Band: Capable doing vs. Actually doing. (too much= jump out of plane w.o. parachute). WOSM: “Get HONEST with your TRUE edge. Lean just beyond it.” i.e. I’m counting calories for the first time. Get honest with actual calories I need. Brutally honest, not what I think I need, estimated — actual numbers. Then…. push yourself. Eat LESS. Lean just BEYOND that TRUE edge = results. 3. The 3 Second Rule: Area we can all relate to with comfort zone: DATING. In an older video, I told you the story of asking out my girlfriend. Outside of my comfort zone. Used the 3-second rule on that situation and just hit SEND. Still dating 3-years later. 4. Be Active, Not Passive What in life just get’s handed to you? What in life don’t you have to work for? Everyone watching RIGHT now has dreams, has goals, has ambition. You want to refuse to settle. Sounds obvious, but you HAVE to move towards them! Get comfortable being uncomfortable. 5. Project outward: What will it look like if you don't take action? Courage not the absence of fear, courage is taking action in spite of it. Don’t be afraid to go ALL in. It’s okay if you fail because you went ALL in. Always learn way more. “Is this the thing I feared?” Project out the WORST possible outcome that could happen. Write them down! Not as bad or hard to solve as you think. Introduction Please turn in your Bibles to Revelation 2. This morning we will be looking at Christ's letter to the church in Pergamum. I will begin by asking what you think of conspiracy theories. Some of you may actually be conspiracy theorists, though I do not know. If you do not know what that means, a conspiracy theorist is someone who believes that there is a dark conspiracy of intelligent, powerful individuals seeking to take over and dominate the world. These fearful speculations became popular during the Cold War when there was a concern over Communist infiltration and takeover of our structures. There was also speculation that the industrial military complex was responsible for John F. Kennedy’s assassination rather than a lone gunman. Some have even postulated that landing on the moon is all a hoax, a vast conspiracy. Some of the darker and broader ones go back even to the Middle Ages, to the Knights Templar and to the Illuminati. Even in our midst, some people that you may think are simply upstanding members of the community could be part of this secret society, with secret handshakes and such; things may not be as they appear. You may wonder why I am starting the sermon this way. It is because I do believe there is a vast, dark conspiracy of powerful individuals that seek to dominate and rule the world for their own glory. You may know exactly who I am talking about. I am talking about Satan and his demonic forces. It is actually more vast than we can imagine. It is more powerful than we can imagine. If we were able to see the demons with our eyes —the powers and principalities, the rulers and authorities — I believe we would quail immediately and be terrified, and how much more if we saw their king Satan, who has been seeking to rule and to dominate the world since time began. The reason I mention it in light of this letter is because Jesus is speaking to a church in Pergamum about whom He says twice, “where Satan dwells” or “where Satan has his throne.” As the book of Revelation unfolds, we will see all kinds of things revealed that have been hidden from our eyes. First and foremost, we will see the glory of Jesus Christ. In Revelation 1, we have this incredible vision of Christ moving among the seven golden lampstands, which represent local churches; but as He addresses these seven local churches in Revelations 2 and 3 with these seven letters, He is not limiting His audience to those local churches only. At the end of each of the seven letters, we have these words, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” Thus, these seven letters in Revelation 2 and 3 comprise a timeless message to all Christians throughout all time. We will see revealed in the book of Revelation the invisible, hidden ministry of Jesus Christ to the local churches. I pray that that will be happening even here in our midst today by the Spirit. In addition to seeing the glory of Jesus Christ, we also have unfolded for us the invisible hidden spiritual realms and the future, where we are headed and what will happen. These things are hidden from our sight; things are not as they appear. In Revelation 12 in particular, the history of Satan, this ancient dragon, the ancient serpent, the devil, will be revealed. It says there in Revelation 12 that it is he “who leads the whole world astray.” In that chapter, we learn that Satan, a created being, perhaps the most glorious and powerful of all the angels, tried to take over Heaven in some kind of insurrection. Isaiah 14 gives us a picture of his evil ambition to ascend and take over the throne from the Most High in order to supplant God and rule the universe in His place. Satan led a rebellion of other angels whom we now know as demons. The archangel Michael defeated Satan and his minions and they were cast down to the Earth. In other places in Scripture he is called “the god of this age” or “the god of this world.” Isaiah 14 shows Satan to be the puppet master behind the king of Babylon. In reading Isaiah 14, it is difficult to know whether the Lord is prophesying an oracle against the king of Babylon or against some malevolent force behind the king of Babylon. I believe it is both. The Lord is addressing the evil king of Babylon, a physical literal king who is ruling an empire, but behind him, the language goes beyond a human evil ruler to pinpoint a puppet master who is able to make the rulers of the world dance to his tune on invisible hidden strings — that is Satan. In Revelation 13, we see a dragon standing by the shore, who calls out a beast, which is the antichrist. This fits with images from Daniel chapter 7 in which we see a series of beasts coming up one after the other. The implication in Revelation 13 that Satan is the one orchestrating all of these evil human empires for his own purposes. As we begin reading the letter to this church in Pergamum we learn something else: Satan, though he has a global focus, is active in special ways in certain physical localities, certain geographical places, certain cities. I am not saying that Durham is a place where Satan has his throne, but this letter has the power to make the scales fall from our eyes to see a darker purpose behind the issues that we face today. The text tells us that there in Pergamum, Satan had his throne. All of this dark, malevolent intentionality of Satan in this world is woven together in a system of powerful evil allurements that seek to destroy the people of God and draw them into sin, called “the world.” 1 John 2:15-17 says, “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world — the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes, and the boasting of what he has and does — comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.” Satan had a throne of power in Pergamum, and the world system he had crafted there was a powerful magnetic force on the souls of the Christians there, drawing them to evil and to sin. This letter to the church, then, is a timeless warning for us here in the West and in America to be mindful of what Satan is doing to lure us into sin. The letter we will look at next week conveys a similar message. In the context of Revelation 1, Jesus appeared in a white robe reaching down to His feet with a golden sash around His chest, with eyes of blazing fire and feet of burnished bronze. He held in His right hand seven stars and He is moving among seven golden lampstands. These represent His active, consistent ministry to the His universal Church, but also specifically to local churches in that area at that time. Christ’s Sword vs. Satan’s Throne This letter begins rather ominously. It has a different feel than the two letters we have already studied in Revelation. The letter to the church at Ephesus starts positively, with encouragement: “These are the words of Him who holds the seven stars in His right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands.” That is comforting; it gives a sense of His power and His protection for and His active ministry to the churches. Then, to that little persecuted church in Smyrna that we looked at last week, He says this, “These are the words of Him who is the First and the Last, who died and came to life again.” Again, comforting words. This letter, however, begins ominously, in verse 12: “These are the words of Him who has a sharp double-edged sword.” This gives a powerful sense of the looming threat if this church will not heed the warning in reference to sin. Christ’s Sharp, Double-Edged Sword What is this sharp double-edged sword that comes out of Jesus’ mouth? This can be nothing less than the powerful, active Word of God. Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the Word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing of soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” This double-edged sword is the penetrating, active ministry of the Word of God that comes from His mouth. Jesus has been speaking that Word throughout all generations of redemptive history up until the New Testament was completed. He spoke through prophets in the Old Testament, and He spoke through apostles in the New Testament, and thus we have the Word of God, the Bible. Why is it called a sharp double-edged sword? Because of its penetrating ability. The double-edged sword, it seems, always has to do with Christ’s attack on sin; the expression is typically used in a negative sense. But He does it differently in His own people than He does concerning His enemies. The double-edged sword slaughters His enemies, unrepentant sinners, but toward His people, it becomes a surgical scalpel that cuts out the tumor of sin. In this letter, there is a sense of threat. In verse 16, He says, “Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth.” At the end of this Book of Revelation, the Second Coming of Christ is depicted; He will come in might and power. At that point, the antichrist will be aggressively reigning on Earth, and will have gathered a vast army to wipe out whatever is left of the people of God. There we see that Jesus comes down from Heaven with the armies of Heaven. Revelation 19:15 says, “Out of His mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. ‘He will rule them with an iron scepter.’ He treads the wine press of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty.” The double-edged sword is an instrument of wrath to destroy Christ's enemies. Revelation 19:21 says, “The rest of them, the army that was following the antichrist, were killed with the sword that came out of the mouth of the rider on the horse, and all the birds gorged themselves on their flesh.” This letter to the church of Pergamum carries the same ominous tone: “These are the words of Him who has the sharp double-edged sword coming out of His mouth.” Satan’s Throne: Localized Evil He talks about the localized evil in Revelation 2:13 “I know where you live — where Satan has his throne.” Satan has an invisible worldwide empire — it is hidden from our sight, but the Word of God tells us that it exists. We would not know any other way. 2 Corinthians 4:4 says, “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the Gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” Satan is called the “god of this age” though he has blinded unbelievers to seeing the spiritual realm. 1 John 5:19 says powerfully, “The whole world lies in the power of the evil one.” Ephesians 6:12 says, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the Heavenly realms.” There is a division of hierarchy of evil powers under Satan, hence the plural: “rulers… authorities… powers of this dark age… spiritual forces.” There are many demonic rulers under Satan’s overarching empire. Colossians 1 speaks of thrones and gives the comforting message that all of these thrones and dominions and powers were actually created by Christ, and, ultimately, for Christ. It says in Colossians 1:16, “For by him all things were created: things in Heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him.” That is comforting to us because He is the Creator, the Ruler, and He will be the Judge of all of these dominions and thrones and powers. The book of Daniel implies territorially-focused demonic power in describing how the “king of Persia” withstood a Heavenly messenger for 21 days so that he couldn't get through to bring God’s message to the prophet Daniel. This gives a sense of the Heavenly realms and the Earthly realms mixing together. Persia is an Earthly empire, but the ruler indicated is behind the scenes, invisible but very powerful. That is the idea here concerning this “place where Satan has his throne”, where he dwells. In his temptation of Jesus, Satan claims rulership over the entire Earth. In Luke 4 he says, “All the kingdoms of the world have been given to me, and I can give them to whoever I want.” Satan and his demons have been given leave to set up thrones of power in specific areas as an evil base of operation. I want to share my personal testimony regarding this demonic base of operation. I have encountered this many times in my ministry. There is no material proof but there is a sense of a demonic presence and power, more vigorously active in certain localities than in other places. Much of it has to do with what is happening in those places. For example, I was a part of a Halloween ministry in Salem, Massachusetts near which I lived. There were 3,000 registered witches in that town, coming from all over the world to live there. They were serious about their occultic practices. It was a very dark place, especially Halloween, which was a high dark holy festival for them. They did a great deal of recruiting on Halloween. Laurie Cabot was the official witch of Salem, and ministering at her house, I always felt a Satanic presence. It was an evil place. I felt it also at the abortion clinic where I used to go on Saturday mornings in Brookline, Massachusetts. Thousands and thousands of babies were killed there. I do not know if it is still open, but it was a very dark place. We would try to persuade women not to have abortions. We would try to communicate with them, but the pro-abortion forces who were there would yell and scream at us, it was very hot, and we would see the women walking into the clinic. Many difficult battles, a very challenging ministry. We were there for three hours every Saturday. When I drove home from there, I would feel as though I was being chased, definite feelings of paranoia. (Someone once said, “Just because you are paranoid does not mean someone is not actually out to get you.” Think about that one.) But though I was feeling paranoid, I believe there may have been evil beings following me. I would go home and sleep for three or four hours every Saturday afternoon, though I do not typically nap. I was exhausted by that ministry. One time I was preaching in Pune, India. There, I experienced an overpowering feeling of demonic presence. I preached to 5,000 to 7,000 people. The city was spraying to kill mosquitoes because it was in the height of dengue fever season. The spraying machines droned with a continuous buzz and created a fog. As I was preparing to preach, this chemical cloud rose and hung about 15-20 feet over the assembly. This was also at the time of the Hindu festival of Diwali, which is the Festival of Lights, though it was anything but light — there was a very dark, demonic feel. That was one of the hardest times I have ever had preaching in my life. I felt like invisible chains were around my chest and my throat. As I said to someone on the way over to the event, I felt as though I was being driven to my own execution. All these feelings were pressing in on me, and I am sure they were all demonic. As soon as I stood up and began to preach on the Book of Philippians, the entire burden lifted, just dissipated. Sometimes Satan shows his activity more in one locality than in others, depending on what is going there, and that seems to be what was happening there in Pergamum. The Setting: Pergamum Pergamum was located about 100 miles north of Ephesus, with Smyrna located halfway between. Unlike Ephesus and Smyrna, Pergamum was not a port city right on the Aegean Sea but was located 15 miles inland. Yet it was probably the greatest, most significant city in the region. Roman writer, Pliny, called Pergamum “by far, the most distinguished city in Asia.” By the time John wrote the Book of Revelation, Pergamum had been the capital city of the province of Asia for almost 250 years. Now, you could visit the ruins of Pergamum. They are near a city in modern day Turkey called Bergama, very similar to the word “Pergamum.” It was built on a large, roughly conical-shaped hill — most ancient cities were built on high places because they were easier to defend. This one was very striking for its height at about 1,000 feet above the valley, off the plain — it was a very imposing place. Pergamum boasted a massive library — 200,000 ancient books and scrolls, which incredible if you consider that all of them were hand-copied. It was a center of learning rivaling ancient Alexandria in scope, so it was very well-known. The ruler of Alexandria, at one point, forbade the export of papyrus, the writing paper, to Pergamum, because he was jealous for Alexandria’s position as a center of learning, so the people of Pergamum developed a kind of paper called vellum, made from animal skins stretched thin; we also know it as parchment, which was used for centuries after that. Because of its library, Pergamum was a powerful center of pagan Greek and Roman culture. They were very proud of this culture. Near the summit of the acropolis, that high hill that I mentioned, stood an immense temple and altar to the Greek god Zeus, the king of the Greek gods. On it was depicted the victory of the citizens of Pergamum, together with the Roman soldiers, against the Barbarian Gauls who had invaded in 189 B.C. The people of Pergamum allied themselves with Rome to defeat the Gauls and then became fiercely loyal to Rome. Rome took notice. The imperial cult was powerful there. As a result, the loyalty of the citizens to Rome and the emperor was established. In 29 B.C., the citizens of Pergamum were granted permission to build and dedicate a temple to Augustus, the first temple built to honor a living emperor and worship him as a god —a significant indication of the mindset at the time. The people of Pergamum worshiped the Roman emperors as gods, one after the other, so civil religion in Asia Minor had its center there in Pergamum. There was also a temple to the Greek god of healing, Asclepius; sick people from all over Asia made pilgrimages to Pergamum to be healed. Standing for Truth When Satan Attacks Externally We can see, then, the battle lines of truth being drawn. Ancient classical education, paganism, worship of Greek and Roman gods, and the Emperor cult were all aligned against Christianity. Here in our passage, we have the Word of Christ, the truth, coming out of His mouth like a sharp, double-edged sword, and these Christians are being called on to stand for truth when Satan is attacking externally with false doctrines. Battle Lines Drawn Clearly… Where Satan Has His Throne The battle lines are clearly drawn where Satan has his throne. On trial before Pontius Pilate, Jesus said, “For this reason, I was born, and for this entered the world… to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”And very famously, Pilate answered with sarcasm, “What is truth?” That was a great question for Pilate to ask, if he had just stood and listened to Jesus, but he had no interest. He was basically saying, “There is no truth.” That is similar to the way many people feel in America today: “There is no absolute truth.” But the answer was standing right in front of Pilate, right there. “I am the way, and the truth, and the life,” [said Jesus]. “No one comes to the Father, except through me.” (John 14:6) He is the truth that God has spoken into the world, but Satan is seeking to steal, and kill, and destroy by the lies he tells. From the Garden of Eden, that is how he sought to assassinate souls and ruin lives, by the lies that he tells. And so Jesus said in John 8:44, “Satan is a liar and the father of lies… a murderer, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. And when he lies, he speaks his native language.” There at Pergamum, the battle lines are drawn between truth and lies. Christ’s Self-Description Points to the Truth In Verse 12, Jesus says, “These are the words of Him who has the sharp, double-edged sword.” Christ fights powerfully against Satan's lies by the inerrant Word of God, the Word which has poured from His mouth for centuries through His mouthpieces, the apostles and prophets. He also fights the lies in a specific locality through messengers, through witnesses that He sends. And He says, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the Earth,” including the Pergamum. Revelation 14:5 says, “Of these witnesses, no lie was found in their mouths. They are blameless.” They spoke the truth to their surrounding culture. Christ Commends the Church for their Stand for Truth In verse 13 of our text, Christ commends the church for their stand for truth, “I know where you live, where Satan has his throne, yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city where Satan lives.” Christ gives them a powerful commendation, “You stood for the truth, even in the face of persecution. You did not turn your back on me. You did not renounce your faith in me. You did not deny that you knew me” “even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city where Satan lives.” We do not know anything about Antipas except for this one verse. We know that Jesus calls him “my faithful witness.” Wouldn't you love to have Jesus say that about you, to say your name, like Antipas, and call you “my faithful witness”? We do not know anything about his martyrdom, though we can imagine the circumstances: Throughout Asia Minor, the citizens were required every year to burn a pinch of incense in worship of the emperor. Remember that Pergamum was the center of this imperial cult. It makes sense that this Antipas would have refused to burn the incense and say “Caesar is lord,” or “Caesar is god.” He would have said, “No, Jesus is Lord.” Antipas would have been baptized under the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and would have made that central confession, “Jesus is Lord.” Romans 10 says, “If you confess with your mouth ‘Jesus is Lord’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with the heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with the mouth that you confess and are saved… For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Antipas had made that confession with his mouth, because he believed it in his heart. The temptation to sever the heart conviction from the outward life pattern or behavior is ever-present: “Oh, just burn some incense. You know that Caesar is not god. Just say it and save your life,” all the while knowing the opposite is true. This severs the heart from the body, sever the convictions from the lifestyle. Antipas would not do it; he refused. He perhaps said, “I can never say, ‘Caesar is lord,’ even if I have to die. Jesus is Lord.” Jesus was putting Antipas up on a pedestal as a light shining in a dark place. He was put to death there in that city where Satan dwells, “where Satan has his throne.” His death put pressure on the whole church: they knew that the situation was serious, that their earthly lives were at stake and they had to decide whether they would renounce their faith in Christ or stand firm and testify that Jesus is Lord. Christ commends them: “You did not renounce your faith in me, even in the days of Antipas.” The pressure of Satan’s lies was powerful. The church was being threatened and they chose to stand for truth. But there were still hidden problems with this church. There was a corruption in the doctrine of the life of the church that threatened their very survival. It is not enough to begin the Christian life; we must persevere to the end. Matthew 24:13 says,“He who stands firm to the end will be saved.” We must run a race, a race of holiness, of integrity. Integrity means being the same person all the time, the same person in secret that you are in public. Integrity is similar to “integer,” indicating oneness: a oneness between mind, and heart, and lifestyle. In this church there was a tumor of false doctrine leading to worldliness and sin that had to be excised, or they would die. Standing for Holiness When Satan Attacks Internally True Christianity: Right Doctrine Must Result in Holy Living The church is called, then, to stand for holiness when Satan attacks internally — that is, in the minds and hearts of believers. True Christianity, right doctrine, must result in holy living. We cannot sever what we say we believe about Christ from how we live our physical lives in this world. Satan will try to pull the church toward the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the boastful pride of life. Personal holiness may be the greatest mark of regeneration. If you ask, “How can I know am I a Christian? How can I know if I'm born again?”, the answer lies in how you are living your life. Are you fighting for holiness by the power of the Spirit of God? First John 1:5-6 says, “This is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is light, and in Him, there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with Christ, and yet walk in the darkness, we lie, and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin.” Galatians 6:7 says, “Do not be deceived; God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his flesh, from his flesh will reap destruction. The one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.” 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 says plainly, “…the wicked will not inherit the Kingdom of God. Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor male prostitutes, nor homosexual offenders, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor swindlers will inherit the Kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of the Lord.” In other words, Christ saves us out of darkness into light and begins transforming us from the inside out. Christ’s Criticism of Pergamum We are all fighting this battle, but it is even worse when false teachers stand up and teach false doctrine about the life of the body. In some places, they are called libertines. Here in Pergamum, they are called Nicolaitans, mystically connected to Balaam of the Old Testament. Revelation 2:14-15 says, “Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: You have people there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin by eating food sacrificed to idols and by committing sexual immorality. Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.” Christ “holds some things against” this church — He is not completely pleased with the church at Pergamum. They are tolerating, and some of them, perhaps, even delighting in the teachings of Balaam, or the Balaamites, or the Nicolaitans. It seems the majority of the church were faithful to Christ, but an influential minority were being led astray into sexual immorality and the eating of meat sacrificed to idols at pagan temples. That was the old sensual lifestyle that they had been called out of: the sexual immorality of the temple prostitutes, the orgies, the indulgent feasts, all of them done in the name of sensual pleasure and false gods and goddesses. I do not know if the teaching of Balaam and the Nicolaitans are two different heresies or two names for the same thing, but that is not a significant point. Most likely, they were two different but closely related heresies. Balaam was a prophet in the Old Testament, a visionary, whom we meet in Numbers 22-25. He was a mystical seer with the ability to predict the future. Perhaps the true living God had somehow used him as a mouthpiece prior to the events in the Numbers account. He was a prophet for hire — or, as I once heard, “A prophet for profit.” He was in it for the money. He had no real interest, it seems, in truth or the living God. He was hired by Balak, King of Moab, after Balak heard what Israel had done in destroying the Amorites. Balak went to Balaam to hire him to utter a prophetic curse on Israel. Almighty God severely warned Balaam again and again to say only those things God told him to say. The final warning came, very memorably, when his donkey pinned him against a rock wall and would go no further. He began to beat the donkey, and the donkey spoke to him: “Why are you beating me?” That would be quite a moment, don’t you think? “Have I been in the habit of doing this before?” “No, actually, you have not. You have been a good donkey for me.” What a conversation that must have been. In truth, this is even more a testimony on Balaam — if God can use a donkey, He can use anybody to speak for Him. “There is no honor in the fact that I am speaking through you. Do not behave like an animal.” There is a warning, because the angel of God had his sword unsheathed — like Jesus with His sword coming out of His mouth — threatening him with death. The donkey saved his life, at least temporarily. We do not know from the Old Testament account, but Jesus tells us what happens after the oracles in which he lavishly predicted glory for the future of Israel: he secretly taught Balak what to do. In essence, Balaam told Balak, “I know how to hurt Israel; we can turn the holiness of God, the wrath of God, against His own people, if we lead them to sin.” It is the very thing that Satan's trying to do: he is trying to put a sword in the hand of God to motivate God’s own holiness and His own justice against His own people. Balaam orchestrated some Moabite girls, prostitutes and others, to go down and infiltrate the Israelite camp to lead them into worshiping the Baal of Peor. The wrath of God broke out, and 24,000 of the Israelites died in that day. In Pergamum, there were false teachers having the same effect as Balaam and the Moabite women on the nation of Israel. They were luring church members into the same type of ritual sex and idolatry, in the pattern of the pagans of Pergamum. Peter spoke of the same false teachers, these libertines, these Balaamites, in 2 Peter 2:13-19, “Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures, while they feast with you. With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning. They seduce the unstable; they are experts in greed — an a cursed brood! They have left the straight way and have wandered off to follow the way of Balaam, son of Beor, who loved the wages of wickedness. But he was rebuked for his wrong doing by a donkey, a beast without speech, who spoke with a man’s voice and restrained the prophet's madness. These men are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them. For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of sinful human nature, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity-- for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him.” It seems that the Nicolaitans were doing the exact same thing, probably the same people Jesus was referring to in Revelation 2. He begins by saying “Likewise” — or in the same way, or thus — meaning the Nicolaitans were contemporary versions of Balaamites. In truth, Satan has a limited number of goals. He wants to kill your soul by a limited menu of three items — the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the boastful pride of life — but he has a variety of ways to get you there. These could be two different patterns of false teaching or just two different names for the same. This is the essence of the world attack, the license, the severing of how you are living from what you say you believe. The Church’s Responsibility to Purity Itself Again the majority of the members of the church at Pergamum did not hold to these false teachings, but they were still at fault some degree. The church is responsible for its own purity. If there is any kind of sexual immorality taking place and the church becomes aware of and those engaged in sin are not repentant, it is the church’s responsibility to expel those people from their midst. 1 Corinthians 5 makes this very plain: “Expel the evil man from among you. Do not even eat with him.” Paul says at the end of 1 Corinthians 5, “What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. Expel the wicked man from among you.” That was what the Pergamum church should have done, but they did not do it. The Warning and The Clear Command from Christ: Repent or Die And so Christ gave them a warning: Repent or die. Look at verse 16, “Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.” For the Balaamites and the Nicolaitans themselves, if God would grant it to them, there is a still a way open of repentance. “If they would say, ‘I have been living an immoral life. I have not lived up to my calling as a Christian’ and they genuinely repent, then they will be forgiven.” He called on them to repent, to think differently, to make a U-turn, to live an entirely different kind of life, to come to different convictions based on the word of God, to see that the Holy Spirit is telling them to start living a holy life, one that truly honored and glorified God, and to “bring forth fruit in keeping with repentance.” Christ’s Open Threat: Death to the Wicked “But if you do not,” Jesus said, “I will soon come to you and fight against them with the sword of my mouth.” What a terrifying prospect, to have Jesus be your enemy as in a military encounter. Recently I have noticed local billboards and other media waging a campaign to educate the public about the danger of trains. This is necessary because some people try to get ahead of oncoming trains by running or driving across at the last minute. The message of the public service campaign is that the battle between you and train is unequal and you will lose. An average train engine weighs 150 tons; with cars, a train of average length around here would be about 4,000 tons. Even a heavier personal vehicle like pickup truck — weighing around 4 tons, depending on its load — is outweighed by about 1000:1. Now take into account the momentum of those 4,000 tons — it is almost unbelievable. (I will be geeky for a moment:) Momentum equals ½ mass x velocity squared. Big mass, velocity, and you get crushed if you try to compete with the train. The battle between Jesus Christ and any created being is an infinitely greater mismatch than that. You do not want Christ to fight against you in any way. It is a terrifying thing. Think what happened to Ananias and Sapphira when they sinned. They simply dropped dead. When Jesus says, “Die,” you die. When He fights against you with the sword of His mouth, when He takes your life from you, you die. He can take anything from you that you value. That is His discipline. He can bring judgement. As Paul says, “Should we fight against Him? Are we stronger than He?” Christ threatened this church with death. The heretics and their followers were directly threatened, but the warning was spoken to the entire church. The contagion of sin is so deadly, can spread so easily, that if we are not careful, we will get sucked into it too. The passage in 1 Corinthians 5 on church discipline tells us that “a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.” It will spread if the church is not committed to holiness. Paul also says in Galatians 6:1, “Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted.” Jesus Cannot Tolerate Any Evil Whatsoever! Jesus will not tolerate any evil whatsoever. The whole witness of this church was threatened by sin, and if the church were enticed to evil, it would become worldly and corrupt and could no longer be Christ’s representatives in Pergamum. He would rather have fought against that church with the sword of His mouth than allow them to continue bearing His name in that community corrupted with evil and sin in their hearts. The Reward: Hidden Manna, a Secret Stone Christ’s Call to Listen Christ promises a reward to those who overcome: hidden manna and a secret stone. In every letter, to each church, as in verse 17, He said this, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” Now faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word. I have said many times before that faith is the eyesight of the soul. What do we see with this eyesight? We see the holiness of Christ, but we also see ourselves in a true light. Hebrews 11:1 says “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, [but it is also] the conviction of things not seen.” The word, “conviction” in that verse gives the sense of being convicted in a court of law or seriously, deeply convicted by something in a sermon. Faith convicts us of the sin that is at work in our lives and in our hearts. We see sin in light of Christ’s holiness. Listen to what the Spirit says to the churches. We have the same dangers facing us today that the church had in Pergamum — perhaps in a different form or pattern — but it is, in truth, no different. Christ’s Promise to the Overcomers What has Christ promised? The promise is to those who overcome — to the conquerors, the ones who rise up, wage war, fight and overcome. That is the essence of holiness, the battle that Christ has given us. Paul says in Romans 8:13-14, “For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” If you are a child of God, the Holy Spirit will get you up every day, call you to put on your own spiritual armor, and lead you into battle against sin, the battle for holiness. Now if you overcome: Verse 17 says, “To him who overcomes, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it.” The word “manna” hearkens back to the Exodus, referring to the bread that came down from Heaven which provided daily food and nourishment for the Israelites as they wandered in the desert. The manna in Revelation 2 is “hidden manna” — a secret, spiritual manna. Regarding this spiritual manna, we must believe what Jesus said in John Chapter 6: “I am the bread that came down from Heaven. If anyone feeds on me, he will live forever.” When we recognize that Jesus is all we need and we feed on him, feed on His death and His resurrection, we gain nourishment and strength. It is a hidden manna. We feed on Christ for the internal spiritual nature. If we will overcome, we will have a deeper, wider, more fulfilling relationship with Christ. Sin doesn't satisfy. For instance, viewing internet pornography is like drinking very salty water when one is very thirsty. As soon as the water is gone, he is immediately thirsty again, but worse than before. It does not satisfy. The beauty of our walk with Christ, the hidden manna, is that we eat and are completely satisfied. We gain a sense of joy and fulfillment. Not only that, but we also gain the sense that this is only the beginning, that Christ has so much more joy, so much feasting in Heaven, and these things are merely a foretaste. If we overcome, we will feed on the hidden manna and will be assured that we will be feasting in Heaven. He says, “I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it.” Some commentators liken it to the Urim and Thummim of the Old Testament. The priests had two polished stones, one white and one black. They would ask a yes/no question and roll out one of the stones. White meant “Yes”, and black meant “No”. These commentators see this white stone as representing Jesus as the fulfillment, the yes and the “Amen,” of all our hearts’ desires. Others see it as a diamond or other precious stone. Whatever it is remains to be seen, but it points to a new identity that Christ will give us as priests in His name — priests on Earth and the new universe that is coming. The hidden manna and the white stone and the new name all point to an eternity of a deep, richly satisfying relationship with Christ, enjoyed eternally in Heaven. But even now, we can have foretastes, if we will overcome. Applications I have been giving you applications throughout this sermon, so I will sum up a few here. Come to Christ, Lest He Fight You with His Terrible Sword First, the Gospel: I am pledged week after week to preach the Gospel to any who sit in these pews before me. I do not assume that you have experienced anything I have been talking about. But perhaps you were invited here today by someone you know, and you do not know Christ as your Lord and Savior. One motivation for seriously considering what I have been saying is fear: Jesus will come fight against all His enemies with the sword of His mouth. Judgement is coming: “It is appointed for each one of us to die, and after that, to face judgement.” But God sent Jesus to be an atoning sacrifice for our sins, and if you trust in Christ, believe in Him for the forgiveness of your sins, you will be cleansed and made a new creature. You can live a new life, you can walk in holiness of life, as I have been talking about. So come to Christ. Trust in Him. Recognize the Terrible Danger of Worldliness To the church, I say: Recognize the terrible dangers of worldliness. We cannot see Satan’s throne. I am not saying that Durham is a place where Satan himself dwells or where he has his throne. He is not omnipresent — fast, but not omnipresent. Only God is omnipresent. But there are dangers. The idea behind the expression “where Satan has his throne” is to look at your community and the world; see what is happening, what allurements to sin are popular and widely used here in Durham. What kind of wrong-headed persuasions are going out in our community? What kinds of things are being used to lure people to commit sin; how are they drawing people to sin? That is the Satanic persuasion going on in our culture. Next week we will talk more about sexual sin, so I will not say much about it now. But begin thinking and praying. If you are addicted to pornography in any form, the advice is plain and clear. Go to James 4:4-10, which we will talk more about next week. The idea there is that friendship with the world is hatred toward God. Submit to God. Confess your sins to Him. Plead with Him for forgiveness. Ask Him to break the invisible chains of this sin that are have a hold on your heart. Be Active in Each Other’s Lives Finally, I urge you to be active in each others’ lives. I don't know whether these Balaamites, these Nicolaitans, were overtly sinning or whether there was a hidden clique in the group, but the fact is that we must be a church for one another. We must hold each other accountable. Ask good accountability questions, men with men, women with women, pairing up. Let us be people who hold each other accountable, who help each other to grow, who pray for one other and seek protection from this hidden conspiracy that is seeking to draw all of us into darkness. Close with me in prayer. Father, we thank you for these seven churches. We thank you for their messages. We thank you for how they teach us the truth and guide us into all truth. Lord I pray that you would break the power of canceled sin and set the prisoners free. Father I pray, if there are any here struggling with hidden, secret patterns of sin, that they would find forgiveness and power to break those hidden chains through the word of God. Lord, I pray that you would give us a healthy fear of that sword that comes out of your mouth and that we would be willing to repent and walk in light of your holiness. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

“How Much Land Does a Man Need?” This morning we're looking at Matthew 16:26-28. I wanna begin by asking a question, a question asked by the novelist Leo Tolstoy and that is, “How Much Land Does A Man Need?” It's a short story that he wrote in 1886, James Joyce called it the greatest story ever written. It's a story about a Russian man named Pahom who had ambitions to improve his lot in life and back then in Russia, the most valuable commodity economically was land, real estate. The owner of a large tract of land was inevitably wealthier than one who owned less and one who owned no land at all was a peasant, a beggar living at the whim of a landlord. Now Pahom yearned for more land and therefore with it, more prosperity. At the beginning of the story, he boasts to his wife, “If I could have more land I wouldn't fear the devil himself.” The Devil sitting behind the oven hears this and snickers. He says “Alright fine, we'll have a battle. I'll give you plenty of land and by that means, I will get you into my power.” As the story unfolds, Pahom hears about a tribe of people in the rich fertile valleys of the east, a people named the Bashkirs. Though he can hardly believe it, he hears that these people are selling large tracts of land, for very little money. Incredible bargain. So he travels overland to the Bashkir region and he meets the chieftain. After drinking some tea and going through some social rituals, Pahom gets down to business. He declares his desire to buy some land. The Bashkirs readily agree and Pahom asks for the price, they say strangely 1000 rubles, per day. Pahom doesn't understand what this means, “Per day?” “Yes,” they answer, “for 1000 rubles, you can have as much land as you can walk around in a single day but you have to begin at sunrise and you have to return to the same spot by sunset or else your money is forfeited to us.” Well, Pahom that night is filled with greed. He's thinking that he's in good physical condition. He can walk around a pretty big tract of land, so he's excited. He thinks he can walk around at least 35 miles in a day. He'll have 150 acres for plow land, he thinks and all the rest will be for grazing all of his head of cattle that he is most certainly going to own. So he agrees to the price, he wants to start the next day and they agree to do that. At sunrise Pahom stands ready on the top of a little hillock. The Bashkir chief at sunrise drops his hat on the ground as both the starting and the finishing place for his race. Pahom has to return to that hat by sunset or forfeit his thousand rubles. So he starts off and his greed drives him on quickly throughout the morning as he goes along the first leg of his journey and as he goes the land just seems to get better and better, richer and richer, better looking rivers and copses of trees and he just wants it all but then he starts to realize, I've bit off a lot here and so he thinks it's about time, it's getting near noon to make his first turn, so he digs a little hole to mark the place as was agreed and he turns but he starts to realize that he's behind schedule, the sun's already at the top of the sky, it's the heat of the day, it's actually past noon now and he starts to pick up the pace. He's getting hot, he takes off his coat, he's moving along and he decides enough on the second leg, and he digs a hole to mark the second marker. By now, it's actually mid-to-late afternoon and he thinks he's in trouble, and he actually is. So he starts to travel faster and faster, marks the third spot as quickly as he can, and turns for home. By now, the sun is getting a little bit orange in the western sky and he is pushing as hard as he can. Actually he's running at top speed whatever energy he has left late in the day. He comes over a little bit of a hill and he sees that hillock where he began but it still seems distant and now it's a race for time. He goes as hard and as fast as he can but he's got that last little rise to go just as the sun is dipping over the horizon, he dives and grasps the chieftain's cap, just in time. Well, the Bashkir people are elated. They're just laughing and celebrating, “What a fine fellow. It's the largest tract of land we've ever seen in a single day.” And they're celebrating and they go to raise him up but there's blood coming from Pahom's mouth, you see, he's dead. The exertion killed him and so the Bashkirs take a shovel and they dig a six foot long stretch six feet down in the earth and that's the answer to the question: how much land Pahom needed, just enough to bury him. What an interesting story. What a parable on life, on ambition, on what really matters. What do you really need? I think Jesus asked two searching questions in our text. It gets to a deeper issue even. Pahom forfeited his physical life, Jesus goes even deeper than that. He asked this question, “What would it profit a man, if he gained the whole world and forfeited his soul?” And then he asked a second question: “What would a man give in exchange for his soul?” At the end of your life of achievement, you will stand before Jesus Christ and you'll give an account of every careless word you spoke and you'll give an account of your life and the issue hanging in the balance on Judgment Day will be this: Where will your soul spend eternity? Will your soul spend eternity with God in heaven or will your soul be tormented for eternity in hell? That is the question. There is no third option and Jesus is speaking this to make sure that we don't lose our souls in a fruitless pursuit of things that don't matter at all. Understanding the Context Now, let's understand the context. We're in the Gospel of Matthew, returning there after about a year and a half. The gospel of Matthew is the presentation of Jesus Christ as the king of the kingdom of heaven, that's the theme of the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus is the King of the Kingdom of Heaven. So the gospel begins with a genealogy, establishing his right to rule as the legitimate, the legal heir of David, the son of David. But then in chapters two and three, with his birth, a birth account and then with his baptism and the statement made by Almighty God from the sky, we see established also Jesus is the son of God. So he is the son of David, the son of man, and he is also the son of God and those are his personal credentials to rule over the Kingdom of heaven. And then we see his personality and his attributes established in his miracles at the end of Matthew chapter 4. He does signs and wonders, and so the power of his kingdom established by his miracles. We see also the wisdom of his kingdom established and his teachings, the Sermon on the Mount and the parables and all of the great utterances he spoke as no man ever did. And we see also the character of the King of the Kingdom of Heaven, the purity, the holiness, his compassion, his mercy. We see all of that put on display. But in this section of Matthew, he has turned his gaze and Matthew has through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to us as the readers to people to see whether we will enter the Kingdom or not. We have to enter the Kingdom of Heaven and so there are many teachings concerning this. That we have to be able to in Matthew 16, make Peter's confession, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” in order to enter the kingdom of heaven. And after Peter makes that confession, Jesus warns his disciples, in verse 21 of this chapter, “From that time on, Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the chief priest, elders and teachers of law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.” This is devastating for them. They did not expect a suffering Messiah, still less a dead Messiah. Could not understand this and it was very difficult for them, and Peter again acting as spokesman for what they were all thinking, just could not understand how that could work and took Jesus aside, if you can actually believe this and rebukes Jesus. Quite a moment in redemptive history. Peter, the chief among the apostles, rebuking the Son of God. Jesus turns and rebukes him back and says “Get behind me, Satan. You're a stumbling block to me. You do not have in mind the things of God but the things of man. You're thinking like a man, not thinking like God would have you think.” Now Peter's immediate motive was selfish. He figured that he was in line for a key position in this new kingdom. Did not understand the Kingdom of Heaven, didn't understand it at all. But he knew that Jesus dead leaves him in a bad way, having left his fishing business and all that and being one of Jesus' right-hand men. And so he can't imagine Jesus dead because he can't imagine himself dead either. And so he's really thinking like a human. His mind is focused on earthly things, earthly power, earthly achievement, earthly pleasures, that's what he's thinking about, that's what's on his mind and so Jesus gives this incredible call. Understanding the Call Verse 24 and 25, Jesus said to his disciples. “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me, for whoever wants to save his life will lose it but whoever loses his life for me will find it.” “Don't live for this world,” he's saying to Peter. “Don't cling to things in this world. Don't hold on to your life, let it go. There's another world that's coming and we're gonna live for that world. In this world, we're gonna have trouble; persecution and difficulties and suffering. In the next world, I will establish forever my perfect kingdom. Don't live for this world. Deny yourself. Be willing to die as I'm going to die.” That's what he's saying. Stop finding your life in earthly things. Jesus then turns up the intensity even further, the call on the disciples is that they realize that anything that hindered them from entering the Kingdom of Heaven must be dispensed with, just as Jesus earlier said, if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. So he wants to give the disciples a sense of the immense worth and value of their future life, more significantly of their souls. And so he says this, “What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or What will a man give in exchange for his soul?” Now, from this text, I'm gonna focus on two questions, two issues. And that is the world and what it means to gain it and secondly, the soul and what it means to lose it. And then I'm gonna ask Jesus' two questions and seek to answer them. “What would it profit a man then if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?” and secondly, “What would a man give in exchange for his soul?” I wanna sharpen these questions to a fine point. I wanna urge you to be sure that your soul's final state will be in heaven and not in hell. I believe that's why God brought every one of you here today, including myself; that we would have a strong answer to that question by faith. That we would know where our soul is going to spend eternity. It's not an academic question. There could be no more important question that you face today than that. Where will your soul spend eternity? Will you be welcomed into heaven or will you be cast into Hell? One of those two will be your future. And to help you, I will focus on the final inducement that Christ makes. Verse 27, “The Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels and then he will reward each person according to what he has done.” Judgment Day is coming and the glory of Christ and the eternal value of your soul will push out every other issue from your mind. I wanna heighten that so you can make the wisest possible choice. The World, and What It Means to Gain It So let's start with this issue and that is the world and what it means to gain it. Jesus said, “What would it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?"” First: No One Has Ever Done This, Though Many Have Tried First of all, let me say no one has ever been able to do it. I mean, to gain the whole world. Many have tried but they've never been able to pull it off. Jesus is clearly using hyperbole here, an exaggerated statement to make a point. The fact of the matter is, many empire builders of all ages have sought to control the world and it has eluded all of them but they have run the race, haven't they? They've certainly tried. The largest contiguous empire in the world in terms of land mass that there ever was, was that of the Mongols, the Mongolians. It reached its peak in the year 1260. It was 12.8 million square miles, larger than the Soviet Union, five times larger than the empire of Alexander the Great. However, for all of that, it represented just shy of 25 percent of the world's available land mass. They got a quarter of it and they had it for a few years, then it started to shrink, as all empires do. And so that's it, that's the number one of all time. Others have tried to control certain aspects of the world. Certain commodities, or certain economic features. John D. Rockefeller for example, over 100 years ago, controlled through Standard Oil over 90 percent of the petroleum business of the world. Now, imagine what that would be worth today, if you controlled 90 percent of it. For that reason, some people estimate that Rockefeller's personal wealth when adjusted to 21st century standards, is the greatest in history, approximately $320 billion. Incredible amount of money. He had 90 percent not 100 percent 90 percent of the oil business and he had it for a little while. In recent years, some have tried to corner the market one way or another. In the 1970s, Nelson Bunker Hunt and his brother Herbert came very close to cornering the market on silver. That doesn't mean owning all the silver in the world, just means controlling it. They'd accumulated huge amounts of silver and by September of '79, the price had risen from $11 an ounce to over $50 an ounce. At that point, the Hunts controlled more than half of the world's deliverable silver but they didn't have quite enough money and the whole thing collapsed and in the end, they filed for bankruptcy so they tried just to control the silver and they couldn't even do that. See, these are just some of the ways that individual human beings have sought to control just small portions of the world and no one has ever been able to do it but Jesus is saying, even if you could gain the whole world, even if you could do it, and if you lost your soul, it wouldn't be worth it. It wouldn't be to your profit. The World IS Attractive—Admit It! Now, the world is attractive, admit it. We're not gonna stand up here and purely say, in a philosophical or theological way, “There's nothing in the world that attracts me. There's nothing here I like. I am so other-worldly that I have no earthly concerns.” Now, I know that Psalms 73 says beautifully. “Earth has nothing I desire besides you.” That God is our portion, he's our final reward, and I understand that thought but let's be honest, God has created a beautiful world and there are desirable things in this world. There's the beauty of the earth, the pleasures of food and travel and entertainment. Hobbies, a good novel, an absorbing board game or an athletic event. There's the value of the esteem of other people. The joy of earthly success in business, academics, athletics, these things are desirable and it's wrong for us to say that there's nothing in them for us. That there's nothing attractive in this world, it just isn't true and all of these things should be received as good gifts of God. We would lie if we said that these things meant nothing whatsoever to us. God created all of these things richly for our enjoyment, he says, but any of them can become idols, they can just take over so they become the focus of our hearts and of our lives. They become an idol. The Attractive Pulls of the World… All Empty And ultimately, if we're gonna use that language, ultimately, the attractive pulls of the world are all empty. They're not going to satisfy our souls deepest longings. There's the pull of power. After Alexander the Great conquers whatever he could conquer and his army was compelling him to turn back and enjoy what he'd conquered, never lost a battle, and he sat down and wept that there were no more battles to fight. Come alongside him and say “Alexander, look at all the battles you've fought and won.” It's not bringing him any happiness, he's miserable. He's got to have more and more and more and more and more. The pull of power. It's empty. How about the pull of wealth? There's Croesus, who lived in the 6th century BC. His land happened to have some of the richest gold mines in the world, therefore he was the richest king in the world. Had all of this gold, didn't make him happy and it was very attractive to Cyrus the Great of Persia. Heard about it, very interested in it. Came and conquered it, captured Croesus and was going to burn him to death. How happy is he now, concerning his wealth? As he's just about to be burned to death, doesn't bring any satisfaction. Actually, the richer you are the more worries and the more trouble you have in life. What about wisdom? If only you could have wisdom, if you could have all of the wisdom. Well, Solomon went down that road for us and what does it say in the book of Ecclesiastes, Ecclesiastes 118; For with much wisdom comes much sorrow. The more knowledge, the more grief. Students can testify to that. The more knowledge I get, the sadder I get, or at least the pursuit of knowledge anyway, brings grief. Solomon, the wisest man that ever lived until the time of Christ and it brought him nothing but misery and sadness. And then there's fame. I think no one can have the kind of fame that's available to us in this modern age. Think about it. Through the internet, through digital photography, through even YouTube, your privatest moments can immediately become world famous. Not that you would want that. More infamous, I would think. We can become quickly infamous but not very much quickly famous, I'm thinking. But I remember during the Barcelona Olympics, the first dream team, the basketball team, Michael Jordan was walking down the street of Barcelona and came to a building, a seven-story building that had a Nike poster of himself that covered the entire side of the building and so, the camera pulls back until it can get the whole poster and you can't even see Michael Jordan, the real one. He's tiny behind this dwarf photo of himself dunking. Worldwide fame, okay? But yet it's pretty pathetic to see athletes and movie stars and others try to hold on to that fame as age starts to take away the capabilities that gave it to them in the first place. They come back for one more Tour de France or they come out of retirement three times or they just can't let it go, because they're not satisfied, they can't live in the past, they can't hold on to it. What about beauty? Look at all the movie starlets and the surgeries they're willing to go through and they're willing to risk their health to maintain their beauty. And you can see an aging starlet as she no longer gets the phone calls she used to get and others have taken her place and she's in some abandoned hotel room and commits suicide like Marilyn Monroe. Didn't bring any ultimate satisfaction and happiness. These things are not meant to be ultimately satisfying to our souls or the reason for our lives. Satan’s Consistent Offer of a Trade And then there's Satan, who in the story of “How Much Land Does A Man Need?” is willing to stand and make a trade with you. Now, he's not offering to peons like you and me, the whole world. He offered that only once to one person, you remember who it was? He offered it to Jesus. “I'll give it all to you, the whole thing, if you'll just bow down and worship me.” And Jesus said, “Away from me, Satan. For it is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’” So he offered it to Jesus but he's willing to make trades. Like Dr. Faustus, who traded his soul to the devil in that story to get supernatural power and pleasures. For 24 years he had it and then at the end of the story he tried to rescind the offer, make the trade back and couldn't do it and came to a bitter end. And so in common speech, we think about somebody with an extraordinary ability, like Paganini who could play an entire piece on one string. He would purposely break three of the strings on the violin and that would leave just one string and he could still play it on the one string and they said he sold his soul to the Devil to get that ability. We use that kind of expression. Well, it's a myth. You can't sell your soul to the Devil. He doesn't have that kind of power. What's he gonna do with it when he is screaming in pain in the lake of fire because that's what it was made for? He doesn't have any ultimate power in this matter but he does have the ability to tempt us to lose our souls as well. And so he's constantly pulling on us to trade our souls for something temporal, something temporary. Some pleasure, some power, some material possession. Something and so that's the world and what it means to gain it. What is the soul and what does it mean to lose it? The Soul, and What It Means to Lose It What Is Your Soul? Well, your soul, it's more than merely your true self. Some people say that what this means is that the power of sin is such that, eventually, you just lose your true self. You won't be true to yourself, you'll be corrupted, you'll be transformed, you'll become a different person. And what good would it be if you kind of lost who you really were in the quest for power and fame and all that? Well, that's true, that does happen but that's not what Jesus is talking about. And it's more than merely your physical life and here, you've got to kind of track through acts of Jesus, a changing of the use of the Greek word. In verse 26 he says in the ESV, it says, “What would it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life?” that's what the ESV gives us. Jesus said, “Whoever wants to save his life will lose it.” I think there he is talking about physical life, but here it's deeper than that. Here he's talking about, not merely that you're going to die, like Pahom after running around that huge tract of land. What good was it for him to gain that big tract of land and die? He can't do anything with it. And so that's true. We can't take it with us and so what good is it if in gaining it, you then die? There are a number of people that press and press and press in their work lives, then when they retire and seek to enjoy their wealth and they can't, they die soon after because of all the exertions. I think that's true as well but that again, is not what Jesus is talking about here. No, no. He's talking about your soul. That's that immaterial part of you that is able to relate to God, to love God, to serve God, to trust in God, to yearn for him. That's what the soul is and according to this, your soul is in jeopardy. You can lose your soul. That soul is eternal. That's not some trick of Greek philosophy as some have thought, the immortality of the soul as some Greek philosophical concept. That is false, it's a biblical concept. God will uphold your conscious existence for eternity. Once he creates you, you will be upheld by God for eternity, either in heaven or hell. You can't cease to exist. Keep that in mind if you're ever toying with the idea of suicide. As Hamlet said, “To sleep, perchance to dream. Ah, that's the rub.” I might not stop existing after I come out of the body. No, you don't. A Lost Soul: Eternal Damnation in Hell So the immortality of the soul is a biblical concept and according to this, your soul, our souls are in jeopardy. The soul itself is in peril and grave danger for Jesus speaks of the possibility this soul could be lost. What does this mean, to lose your soul? This is a terrifying prospect and how can I combine words and tone of voice and physical demeanor to give you a sense of the seriousness of what it means to lose your soul? What can I say? Later in this Gospel, we have a picture of Jesus as a Judge of all the earth and all the nations are gathered before him and he separates them, one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats and he puts the sheep on his right, the believers and he puts the goats, the unbelievers, on the left and he says to those on his left, “Depart from me, you who are cursed into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” Friends, that's what it means to lose your soul. To hear those words spoken about you on that final day. And what is that like? The eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels, what is that like? How can we conceive it? It says in Revelation 14, “He too, will drink the wine of God's fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. He will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb and the smoke of their torment rises forever and ever.” There is no rest, day or night, for those that are cast into hell. For those that are condemned, for those that lose their souls, there's no rest. Luke 16, the rich man is in agony in hell. He's in torment, yearning for Lazarus to come and cool his tongue with some water. That's what it's like, it's just a picture of somebody eternally lost. Now, how is the soul lost, how can we lose our souls, what happens? Well, Jesus seems to pit the pursuit of the world, a love for the world, against the welfare of the soul. The seeking or the gaining of the whole world here, is the enemy of the soul but deeper, the issue is, what does your heart yearn for? The real issue here is sin. It is by sin that we lose our souls. As Jesus will make it plain, souls are lost by Judgment Day's assessment of their life and their behavior. Look at verse 27, “The Son of Man is going to come in the glory of his Father with his angels and then he will repay every man according to his deeds.” Jesus’ Two Piercing Questions So the great issue of your life is simply this; will I lose my soul? And to make this clear, Jesus asks these two piercing questions and both focus on the horror of Judgment Day. A Question of Profit Verse 26, “What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeit his soul?” Gain and loss are like business terms. They are Greek business terms here. Has to do with weighing value. What is the value of this, the setting of the price on that? The economics of the matter? Has to do with relative value and worth and the clear implication, this is astonishing. Is that the value of a single human soul is greater than that of the material possessions of all the world. Meditate on that. You came in here today, the possessor of something, a possession of greater worth and value than all the gold, the silver, the diamonds, the real estate, the Fortune 500 companies, the pleasures and privileges of this world, more than all of that put together. Your soul, worth more than that. And it isn't just your soul. It may help your self-esteem to meditate much on that, fine. Let your self-esteem be helped by considering, “I am created in the image of God. My soul is worth more than the entire physical world.” But it's not just you, but 6.8 billion of us and the same is true of every last one of us. There is not a single human being on the face of the earth for whom it would be a good exchange if they could lose their soul and gain the world. No one. There might be an orphan waif on a pile of garbage in Rio de Janeiro, picking through trying to find enough calories to make it through the day, that person would not be wise to trade their soul to gain the whole world. Neither the president or CEO of a Fortune 500 company. Wouldn't be wise for that person either to trade their soul to gain the whole world. It doesn't matter if they're a professor in a German institution of higher learning or somebody with Alzheimer's. A human being's soul is worth more than the material possessions of the entire world. Therefore, to forfeit, to lose that soul is the most foolish thing a person can ever do. It is the most devastating mistake a person can make. A Question of Exchange It's a question of exchange too, the second question. Look at verse 26, “Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” Again, the language of commerce, of making an equitable trade. Imagine it's Judgment Day and Jesus has done his separation and there you stand in the group you were put in and you come to find out that Jesus is speaking these words about you, “Depart from me, you who are cursed. Into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and drive out demons, perform many miracles?’ and he'll say, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evil-doers.’” So you find yourself in that group and, like it happens in Matthew 25, you may argue with the judge and think it's unfair but your status will remain unchanged and then the judge dispatches an angel, for it speaks of being cast into eternal darkness. It's a very personal thing. And so an angel comes and takes you to the precipice and you can look down into the lake of fire. Alright, freeze right at that moment. Let's say possibly, you still possessed all of your earthly possessions, what percentage of them would you give at that moment in exchange for your soul? If you still had them to give and you won't because they're not yours anyway, they’ll have all been taken from you but suppose you did. “I'll give up to half. I'll give up to half of all I possess that I not be thrown into eternal hell.” “Alright then, 90%. I'll hold back that 10% though.” You won't hold back anything. Imagine then the foolishness of exchanging your eternal soul for anything earthly. You say, well you've been thinking about becoming a Christian but you're afraid of what your friends will think, what effect it will have on your career, what effect it will have on your fun, what effect it will have on your moral life. You're afraid of these things. Alright well, let's collect those things and there's some value or worth you think in each of them. Are you willing to trade your soul for those things? That's the question Jesus is bringing to you here and of course, it will be too late then. There'll be nothing that you can do. The question, the matter, has been decided. You may not want to go to Hell, I tell you, no one wants to go to Hell but you will be cast there if you're not a believer in Jesus Christ. So therefore, the time to face these questions is now, today. Today is the day of salvation. “In the time of my favor I heard you, in the day of salvation I helped you. I tell you, now is the time of God's favor. Today is the day of salvation.” Face the question now. My job, as a preacher, is to make it vividly come alive to you. To clearly portray Judgment Day and in a moment, to clearly depict Christ crucified, the only salvation for your soul. That's my job, but yours is to come to this point. Reason it out. Jesus’ Two Compelling Reasons The Coming Judgment Jesus gives us two compelling reasons to make the wise choice. First, the coming judgment. Verse 27, “The Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels and then he will reward each person according to what he has done.” This is the dreaded Day of the Lord. Christ is going to return in glory with the armies of Heaven. Jude 14 and 15, “Behold, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to judge everyone and to convict all the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have done in the ungodly way, and of all the harsh words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” That is the coming of Christ in power. It's a heavenly invasion and can I tell you that the poll numbers leading up to that won't matter to Jesus? Do you know he's actually going to be King of the earth, whether we want him to be or not? Did you know that? He's not submitting to a popular election. Amen and Amen. He's just coming. He's coming in power to reign. The real election will be what happens with you and now is the time to decide that issue. But he will be King and he will reign forever and ever. So he's coming and he will reign and the judgment will be on all sinners who have not been forgiven and they will give an account, the court will be seated, the books will be open. “And I saw the dead,” Revelation 20, “great and small, standing before the throne and the books were open. Another book was opened which is the Book of Life.” Oh, that your name would be in the Book of life, that you would repent of sins and trust in Christ, that your name would be written indelibly in the Book of Life. Oh, that that would be the case today. And “the dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books." The Coming Glory That's the first reason to make a wise choice, the second is the coming glory. Look at verse 27, “For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels,” verse 28, “I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” The kingdom is coming with glory. I believe that mysterious statement there has to do with the Mount of Transfiguration. We'll deal with that, God willing next week. When some who were standing there actually got to see Jesus made glorious. His face shone like the sun, his clothes became whiter than light and Jesus said in Matthew 13, the parable of the wheat and the tares. “Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.” Oh there's a coming glory. You don't wanna miss it. You don't wanna miss being in that glory and seeing it. I'm coming in my glory and my kingdom is gonna be glorious. Oh, don't miss it. Application Repent and Come to Christ So what application can we take from this? Well first, just repent and come to Christ, if you're not a believer. Repent and come to Christ. Jesus Christ was nailed to a cross, we sang about it right before I came up to preach. The cross of Christ is the power of God for salvation. The message of the cross, the power of God for salvation. Look to the cross, look to Jesus whose blood was shed. Your sins can be forgiven, you can stand forgiven today at the cross and for the rest of your lives. And not by works but by simple faith. By the imputation, the gift of his righteousness, God will see you as perfectly righteous in Jesus for the rest of your life. That's your only hope, look to him and he will forgive you. Examine Yourself Now, I assume the majority of you consider yourselves Christians. You came here today believing yourself to be a Christian. That's a good thing. I'm not trying to undermine your assurance. I'm not trying to pad the statistics of those who will come forward at the end of the service. You know I don't seek to do that. But understand, who did Jesus speak these words to? To his apostles. Don't excuse yourself from the potency of these words, of dealing with the weight of them. Make your calling and election sure, be certain that your soul is saved and forgiven through faith in Christ, that you're living in a right way and then look at what's going on in your life, look at the health of your soul. You may not forfeit your soul but you can actually wage war against your soul. It says in 1 Peter, there are lusts that wage war against the soul. Are you waging a war against your soul, right now? Don't. Put it to death by the power of the Spirit. Meditate on the Infinite Worth of Human Souls… Yours and Others’ Thirdly, meditate on the infinite worth of every single human soul. It will help you to see people differently. You won't be so rude to them or irritable toward them. You're dealing with eternities. Each person you deal with is an eternity in Heaven or Hell. That's what you're dealing with. Feel the weight of that. Deal with it seriously. That's the key to the abortion question. That's the key of the abortion question, the value and worth of a human soul, of a human being. That's what it is. Meditate on the Correspondingly Small Value of the Whole World Meditate on the infinite worth of human souls and meditate on the correspondingly small value of the whole world. It's small, it's a small value so why do you want it so much? “Well, I don't want it.” Yes, you do. More than you should. Put it to death, deny yourself, take up your cross, follow Jesus, don't have earthly ambitions, don't seek great things for yourself in this world. Seek to serve a great King who's coming in a great Kingdom, seek that. Be Active in Seeking and Saving the Lost And then finally, be active in seeking and saving the lost. Part of the reason that I preach like this to believers, I hope and trust is that you will know how to preach to the unbelievers in your life. That you'll be able to take these things and press them home to the unbelievers you know and I don't, who aren't sitting here today and who might be years away from sitting in a church. Talk to them. Talk to them about their soul. Ask them Jesus' question: What good would it be if you gained the whole world and lost your soul? Ask that question to somebody and trust that God will use the Word of God to save them. Close with me in prayer.
