D-dagen den 6 juni 1944 landsteg nästan 160 000 män i det tyskockuperade Normandie i Frankrike. Operation Overlord är den största amfibieoperation som någonsin genomförts.Själva landstigningen var en stor framgång med relativt små förluster för de allierade förutom på de amerikanska stränderna Omaha och Utah beach. De allierades djärvhet och förmåga att vilseleda tyskarna gjorde att tyskarnas togs på sängen trots att invasionen var väntad.I detta avsnitt av podden Historia Nu samtalar programledaren Urban Lindstedt med Hugo Nordland, historiker som är aktuell med boken D-dagen: Den 6 juni 1944.En viktig förberedelse inför operationen var att lura tyskarna att landstigningen skulle ske någon annanstans än just i Normandie. Man skapade falska armékårer, fejkade massiv radiokommunikation, byggde stridsvagnar i papier-maché och gick så långt att man lät en dubbelgångare av den brittiska befälhavaren Montgomery besöka Gibraltar. En krigslist som gick hem.Landstigningen tog tyskarna med fullständig överraskning och i början trodde dom att invasionen bara var en avledningsmanöver för den verkliga invasionen på en annan plats.Den hårdaste bekämpningen av allierade drabbade de amerikanska invasionsstränderna, ”Utah” och ”Omaha” där svårigheterna få iland stridsvagnar blev förödande och soldaterna i den första landsättningsvågen blev utan befäl eftersom befälen stod i först leden och mejades ner med kulspruteeld.På de brittiska stränderna ”Juno”, ”Gold” och ”Sword” gick det bättre och här bröts också ett större motanfall med tyska pansarförband. Den 12 juni fanns i brohuvudet över 300 000 man och 54 000 fordon.Tyskarna gjorde också taktiska misstag genom att vilja bekämpa de allierade längre in i landet istället för att stoppa dem på stränderna. Terroristgruppen Röde Arméfraktionen kom att prägla 1970-talet i Västtyskland med mord, kidnappningar och bankrån. Med tiden kom gruppens aktioner mest handla om att få loss det fängslade ledarskapet från fängelset och mindre om världsrevolution.Grupperingar kring Röda Arméfraktionen ockuperade den västtyska i ambassaden i Stockholm, samt att planerade också att kidnappa den svenska arbetsmarknadsministern Anna-Greta Leijon. Unga radikaler som Ulrike Meinhof, Andreas Baader och Gudrun Ensslin såg att många ledande nazister fanns kvar inom armén och domarkåren och de fruktade nazismens återkomst. Amerikanernas krig i Vietnam fick dem att se nya folkmord och denna gång ville de inte stå passiva eller heja på som föräldragenerationen gjort under Hitler.Polisens brutalitet vid demonstrationer och särskilt mordet på den pacifistiske kristne aktivisten Benno Ohnesorg kom att radikalisera delar av vänsterrörelsen till våldsamma terrorister som kom att prägla 1970-talet i Västtyskland. Den röda arméfraktionen kidnappade, mördade och rånades sig fram i något som till slut mest liknade en dödskult.Terrorn spillde också över i Sverige när den västtyska ambassaden i Stockholm ockuperades i april 1975 med målet att få Röda arméfraktonens ledarskap frigivna. Senare greps och utvisades Norbert Kröcher, som planerade att kidnappa Sveriges tidigare arbetsmarknadsminister Anna-Greta Leijon..Efter Berlinmurens fall och Östtysklands snabba uppgående i Västtyska förbundsrepubliken kunde flera medlemmar av de västtyska terroriströrelserna gripas i det kollapsade DDR. DDR hade fungerat som en fristat för terroristerna. Den 17 april 1961 inleddes ett illa förberett invasionsförsök av Kuba. Planen var att 1400 exilkubaner, som tränats och utrustats av amerikanska säkerhetstjänsten CIA, skulle erövra delar av ön för tända ett allmänt uppror mot Fidel Castro på Kuba.Den unge president John F Kennedy ärvde invasionsplanerna från president Eisenhower. Kennedy var tveksam till planerna, men ville inte framstå som vek mot kommunisthotet och Kennedys oerfarna administrationen klarade inte att kritiskt analysera planerna. CIA räknade sannolikt med att händelserna skulle tvinga fram en aktiv roll för amerikansk militär i invasionen.I denna nymixade repris av podden Historia Nu samtalar programledaren Urban Lindstedt med historikern Bengt Liljegren som skrivit ett stort antal populära historiska biografier. Han är aktuell med biografin John F Kennedy.Att 1400 militärt oerfarna exilkubaner skulle lyckas besegra Fidel Castros 200 000 män var helt orealistiskt. När sedan presidenten begränsade de inledande flygattackerna var chansen till framgång obefintlig. Dessutom visste Castro ett en invasion låg i korten.Det mest gick sedan fel. Exil-kubanerna fick bara med sig en del av sin utrustning och de trodde att USA skulle gripa in militär. Att bara 118 av exil-kubanerna stupade i striderna är förvånande, men männen var mer värda för Fidel Castro levande än döda. Den svenska kyrkan har ända sedan reformationen haft en viktig roll som kungamaktens verktyg för att sprida information och propaganda. Under stormaktstiden blev propagandan ännu viktigare för att stödja krigsansträngningarna.Kyrkan skulle med krigspropaganda hålla befolkningen på gott humör trots alla umbäranden. Knepet blev att skylla krigen på befolkningens syndighet.I denna nymixade repris av podcasten Historia Nu samtalar programledaren Urban Lindstedt med Anna Maria Forssberg som är historiker som arbetar på Vasamuseet. Hennes doktorsavhandling Att hålla folket på gott humör – Informationsspridning, krigspropaganda och mobiliering i Sverige 1655-1680 handlar just om kyrkans roll i krigspropagandan under Stormaktstiden. Hon har senare jämfört kyrklig krigspropaganda i Frankrike och Sverige i boken The Story of War – Church and Propaganda in France och Sweden 1610-1710.Sverige lyckades trots en liten befolkning och knappa resurser bli en stormakt under 1600-talet. Detta medförde stora umbäranden för allmogen i form av höga skatter och utskrivningar till krigsmakten. En halv miljon svenska män förlorade sina liv i krigen mellan 1620 och 1720.Krigspropaganda spreds både i krigs- och fredstid. Statsmakten huvudbudskap var att krigen var ett gudomligt straff på grund av den syndiga befolkningen. Och världen var befolkad av onda fiender vars mål var att förstöra Sverige. Regenten var det bästa skyddet mot fienderna och alla måste bidra i krigsansträngningen.Prästerna motsatte sig aldrig rollen som propagandister för kungamakten. Och anfallskrigen beskrevs som försvarskrig. Enligt prästerna var kungen utsedd av Gud och undersåtarna hade absolut trohets­ plikt mot överheten. När internet började spridas utanför akademiska kretsar utlovades vi ett helt nytt samarbetsinriktat, interaktivt och fritt nätsamhälle där kunskap och idéer skulle flöda fritt. Men den kommersiella delen av internet kom att ta över tjänster och funktioner. Med tiden blev det några få amerikanska bolag som kom att dominera nätet.Ursprunget till internets föregångare Arpanet var militärt. Den amerikanska militären såg ett behov att kunna upprätthålla kommunikationer vid ett kärnvapenkrig. Han arbetar för närvarande på en studie om it-kommissionen.Idén till Arpanet kläcktes 1962 då psykologen och dataforskaren Joseph Licklider skickade runt PM om ett ”intergalaktiskt nätverk”. Och det första meddelandet skickade skickades på Arpanet den 29 oktober 1969. Men idén om ett data nätverk går att spåra betydligt längre tillbaka i historien.Ett viktigt steg i utvecklingen var när konceptet med world wide web utvecklades 1989 med länkar och webbadresser av Tim Berners-Lee på forskningscentret CERN i Schweiz. Fyra år senare var 1,7 procent av svenskarna uppkopplade, men redan vid millennieskiftet var hälften av svenskarna uppkopplade.Den nya kommunikationsteknologin kom med ett löfte om ett nytt samhälle och ett nytt effektivare näringsliv. In this episode we sat down with Bobby Cole of Mossy Oak to talk a little about conservation while at the NWTF Convention in Nashville, TN. Southern states have their struggles just like anywhere else in the country when it comes to managing wildlife. Eric Cole is the 2023 PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year. He has also won over 56 Mini Tour Professional Tournaments and is the ultimate story of resilience and dogged perseverance.   Eric joins Mark Immelman to talk about his career in golf, his journey to the PGA TOUR, and the 2013 Rookie of the Year title. Cole shares stories from his childhood.  He talks about getting to know and play golf with Sam Saunders and Arnold Palmer, as well as growing up with a famous golfing father (Bobby Cole) and an equally famous golfing mother, 1973 LPGA Rookie of the Year, Laura Baugh. Eric shares intimate stories like his battle with Type 1 Diabetes and Addison's Disease.  He talks about NCAA college golf, Mini Tour battles and his ascent to the Korn Ferry Tour and ultimately The PGA TOUR.  He shares how he broke through barriers at each level with a mindset shift and a change in how he views challenges. Growing up in Florida Eric speaks of his affinity to Florida tournaments and shares inside-the-ropes takes of his final round battle with Chris Kirk in the 2023 Honda (now Cognizant) Classic. Språnget från de hårda fästningsfängelserna som var präglade av kroppsbestraffning till 1800-talets ensamceller gjordes utifrån humanistiska ideal även om det blev en mardröm för själen.Under medeltiden var det böter, kroppsstraff eller avrättning som gällde. Inlåsning var tillfällig i väntan på rättegång och straffutmätning. Senare var det lösdrivare och skuldsatta som låstes in. Men på 1700-talet började antalet inlåsta fångar att öka. Brottslingarna låstes in i hårda fästningsfängelser som vaktades av militärer.Under 1800-talet fanns det en utpräglad reformvilja av fängelserna och även fattiga länder som Sverige investerade mycket stora belopp i att bygga moderna fängelser, enligt Philadelphia-modellen.Man gick från kollektiva celler i fästningar till ensamceller i stora fängelser som till och med utrustades med vattenklosetter och centralvärme. 1800-talets ensamstraff skulle tvinga brottslingen att reflektera över sina brott. Men ambitionen att isolera fången kunde många år visade sig vara mycket nedbrytande för fången. På stränderna var det amerikanska, brittiska och kanadensiska trupper som landsteg i Normandie den 6 juni 1944.En viktig förberedelse inför operationen var att lura tyskarna att landstigningen skulle ske någon annanstans än just i Normandie. Man skapade falska armékårer, fejkade massiv radiokommunikation, byggde stridsvagnar i papier-maché och gick så långt att man lät en dubbelgångare av den brittiska befälhavaren Montgomery besöka Gibraltar. En krigslist som gick hem.Landstigningen tog tyskarna med fullständig överraskning och i början trodde dom att invasionen bara var en avledningsmanöver för den verkliga invasionen på en annan plats.Den hårdaste bekämpningen av allierade drabbade de amerikanska invasionsstränderna, ”Utah” och ”Omaha” där svårigheterna få iland stridsvagnar blev förödande och soldaterna i den första landsättningsvågen blev utan befäl eftersom befälen stod i först leden och mejades ner med kulspruteeld.På de brittiska stränderna ”Juno”, ”Gold” och ”Sword” gick det bättre och här bröts också ett större motanfall med tyska pansarförband. Den 12 juni fanns i brohuvudet över 300 000 man och 54 000 fordon.Tyskarna gjorde också taktiska misstag genom att vilja bekämpa de allierade längre in i landet istället för att stoppa dem på stränderna. Genom att jämföra exempelvis räkneord mellan olika språk går det att se släktskap. Sumererna skapade det första kända skrivna språket med sin kilskrift för femtusen år sedan, men de flesta språk saknar skriftspråk.
