We are developing a mini-series here on Church Life Today about the relationship with our beloved dead. We're talking about death, grief, longing, hope, and a lot more. This is connected to a project I myself am working on between the McGrath Institute for Church Life, where I work, and Ave Maria Press, which is a book on this topic. Animating that project are questions like “Where do our beloved dead go? How do they live? And what does this all mean for us, who remain?” I have been talking with people about their experiences of the death of loved ones and their desire for communion with them. I'm not recording all of these conversations, but I have asked a couple people—and maybe I'll ask more––if they would be willing to record an episode for our show so that you can listen in, too. This is the second of those episodes, the first of which appeared under the title “Heaven in the Midst of Death.” My guest today is my friend Stephanie DePrez, a professional opera singer, a comedian, a voice coach, an artist. I'm so grateful to her for her willingness to talk with us today about her mom, Susie DePrez, and her own grief, desire, and hope.

This is Bryan Strawser Principal and Chief Executive here at Bryghtpath. And, in this week’s episode, I want to talk a little bit about mental health. Mental health for you as a business continuity and crisis management, corporate security, professional, and everything that we’ve been through over the last 18 to 20 months as we’ve guided our organizations, our clients, our families through this global pandemic that has driven almost everything that we’ve had to deal with over the last almost two years now. And, I approach this from the standpoint that I don’t have all the answers. I’m not asking for help here or crying out for help. I’m not trying to be brave or anything like that as I talk about mental health and these challenges we’re faced with, with our own resiliency, with our own challenges. As we think about what we’ve all been through in the last 20 months or so with this pandemic and the role that we’ve had to play as business continuity and crisis management and security professionals. But, I do think that we need to do a better job as an industry, as individuals, as people normalizing talking about struggles like this. Struggles that we have as we work through challenging situations. Struggles that we have, we may have, with depression or anxiety, both of which are issues I’ve been faced with in my teenage years and adult life. But, also just the stress that we face in these situations that we have to deal with. In my own career, I have dealt with all of the issues related to managing crisis situations where lives were at stake. I have lost fellow employees in shootings and violent crime. My team, when I worked in a Fortune 30 company, regularly dealt with homicides and suicides of their fellow workers. We managed and helped to manage situations where an employee had killed another employee. Sometimes people that we knew and had interactions with. And, all of the stress that is created in that and all of the trauma that impacts us. And, I think that all of those are things we should acknowledge, but then we look at what we’ve all dealt with in the last two years dealing with the pandemic. Where whether we’ve had support within our organizations or not, whether we’ve had resources, maybe not even the resources that we need within our companies to have dealt with the myriad of issues that we’ve been faced with over the last year and a half, as we’ve dealt with the pandemic. Our companies

Episode 19 Perseverance: Dancing in the Midst of Chaos

Determined to Dance Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 13, 2021 6:57

Welcome to the Determined to Dance podcast with your host, Jennifer Hallmark. Today's episode, “Perseverance: Dancing in the Midst of Chaos” kicks off a new series of learning how to move forward, no matter what life brings. Are you ready? The world would have us march to its chaotic beat but God invites us to dance in His will and His way. Let's take a moment to be energized, refreshed, and motivated to face the day, one spin and twirl at a time. Show Notes: Perseverance: Dancing in the Midst of Chaos I persevere. I'm determined to dance in the midst of the chaos. I've written these words in the notebook by my bed so I can see them at least twice a day. Why? It's an important reminder of my need to persevere. Not give up. Keep on truckin'. Excuse my seventies cliché. But seriously, what does it mean to persevere? My favorite definition says, “To continue in a course of action even in the face of difficulty or with little or no prospect of success. Yikes. The very definition makes me cringe. I mean, phrases like “face of difficulty” and “little or no prospect of success” don't necessarily warm my heart. But it's my life. Your life. Similar words for perseverance are patience, persistence, and tenacity. Expressions for hard times. Difficult relationships. Trying circumstances. When I think of famous people that fit those words, I consider Joseph and Ruth from the Old Testament of the Bible. Paul from the New Testament. Thomas Edison Amelia Earhart, Walt Disney. James Dyson. Bethany Hamilton, Steven Spielberg. All are ordinary people who've accomplished the extraordinary. And they all had the ability to persevere in common. Say your name aloud. Go ahead. Okay, I'll start. Jennifer Hallmark. I'm just an ordinary gal committed to persevere and accomplish the extraordinary. You can too. And you will. Let's start with something simple. I've encouraged at least one person in the last year. In the midst of the pandemic. That alone is above the ordinary. To get your mind off yourself during trying times can be hard but I did it. I know you did too. And if you take time to consider, you'll think of many extraordinary tasks you've performed, relationships you engaged in, lives you've changed. See? You are a remarkable person. When I first started writing as a career, I penned a medieval fantasy novel, think vaguely Lord of the Rings combined with Narnia, with too many mistakes to count. An offer came my way to self-publish so I prayed a lot, then declined it. I felt like God wanted my writing journey to follow the traditionally published road. He knew my novel was nowhere near ready and that I wasn't either. At the time, I had no idea that it would take 11 years to be offered a contract. Then 2 more years before I would see Jessie's Hope, my SECOND novel, come into the world. My first is still unpublished. If I'd known this, it would have been overwhelming and odds are I'd left the dance floor of writing for God in utter discouragement and disbelief. But a book I wrote was released so now everything is perfect. Right? I see your smiles. Why is it that we believe if we only get that one thing, we want more than anything that life will be nothing but sunshine, rainbows, and perfect days? Well, it's not. Instead, I moved back into learning to persevere in marketing, writing more books, and learning lots about the writing world. I've gotten rejection letters and lived through days where I thought the sun would never shine again. What advice have I learned that might help you if you're just starting on a new venture? Enjoy the journey. The mountain tops are awesome and worth the struggle but they don't last long. Relish the view of each and every step. Make friends along the way. And not just people you think will help you. Pray for divine connections and you might be surprised at the variety of people you'll meet. It's worth it.

[Comment: In the Midst of Wolves] Friends of the Rosary: Today's reading (Mt 10:16-23) reveals what are the consequences on earth for Christians who stand up for the eternal truth. Jesus Christ anticipated to his Apostles that they were “like sheep in the midst of wolves”. And warned: “But beware of men, for they will hand you over to courts and scourge you in their synagogues, and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake as a witness before them and the pagans.” The Creator of Life, the All-Powerful King of the Universe, would experience Himself what means to defend truth and combat sin and death. He died in the Cross for us. Have times changed given the fact that organized religion is now part of the establishment? The persistence of abortion, euthanasia, sexual immorality, profanation of the Eucharist, anti-family policies, and all kind of offenses against Jesus and Mary, shows that many prelates prefer to please the world instead of promoting heroic holiness among the faithful. The vast majority of believers are fine with that. Given the persecution, should we give up then? The Word, the Body, and Blood, of Jesus Christ, are much more powerful than the enemy. “Whoever endures to the end will be saved,” He promised us. We trust the Holy One, the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. We ask the Holy Mary to intercede for us. Ave Maria! Can Reformed Women be Ordained Deacons? | Show Notes Are ordained Deaconesses compatible with historic Christian orthodoxy? Complementarians insist not, egalitarians insist, yes! A recently published book, by Medieval Historian and Baptist egalitarian, Beth Allison Barr claims that women were most definitely ordained as deacons and that patriarchalist church leaders today are unjustly barring women from being ordained. Join me, Kerry Baldwin, with Deaconess Melissa DeGroot, as we dare to think about the ordination of Women Deacons. Guest: Melissa DeGroot, Deaconess, LCMS (Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod Melissa DeGroot is a certified and consecrated deaconess in The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. She studied Theology at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, IN. She served at the seminary in recruitment and formation, then later with the Synod as a Writer/Researcher for the LCMS Deaconess Department based out of St. Louis, MO. She has been a contributor to blogs: He Remembers The Barren and The Lutheran Witness. She was a weekly guest on KFUO radio's bible study segment. DeGroot has also written articles pertaining to theology, women's roles and the vocation of Deaconess in The Lutheran Witness, Higher Things Magazine, and For The Life of The World. She has also written and contributed to two books, He Remembers the Barren (both editions) by Katie Schuermann, and Never Forsaken: God's Mercy in the Midst of Miscarriage by Dcs. Kathryn Ziegler. Melissa currently resides in Rio Rancho, New Mexico with her husband, son and dog, and has recently tried her hand at putting up shiplap. While DIY-ing has seemingly taken over her life, she prefers reading, hiking and cooking. And good conversation! Ordination Lutheran & Presbyterian Augsburg Confession and Westminster Confession, Compared (Relevant Sections) VII. Of the Church | XXV. Of the Church VIII. What the Church is | XXVI. Of the Communion of Saints XIV. Of Ecclesiastical Order | I. Of Holy Scripture XV. Of Ecclesiastical Usages | XXX. Of Church Censures XXI: Worship of the Saints | XXI. Of Religious Worship Baptist Baptist Faith & Practice - On the Church "The biblical teaching about women in ministry is not about ordination because Southern Baptists do not believe in ordination or a clerical class. There is an argument that says, “A woman can do everything a non-ordained man can do.” The problem with that is that we are Baptists and have no theology of ordination whatsoever. For that reason, we have to understand that the pastoral office and pastoral function are the same thing." - Al Mohler, 10 Points of Complementarianism Three strains of Reformed and Presbyterian Confessions The Dutch Reformed hold the “Three Forms of Unity” (3FU) which encompass the Belgic Confession (1561), The Heidelberg Catechism (1563), and the Canons of Dort (1619). The Swiss Reformed have the Second Helvetic Confession (1566). The Scottish Presbyterians hold to the Westminster Confessions - WCF (1647) and Shorter (1647) and Larger (1648) Catechisms. The Westminster Confession also has a revised American version (1788) which denounced Establishmentarianism (the idea that the church should run the civil government). Later, in 1689, came the London Baptist Confession, which is essentially a Baptist version of the Westminster. NOTE: There is/was a “new” strain of “Reformed” theology that became popular through John Piper, John MacArthur, and others. Piper later dubbed this “New Calvinism.” I and many other Calvinist/Presbyterians reject this “New Calvinism” as not being Reformed. So we distinguish ourselves as "Old School" Presbyterians. Another term that shouldn't be confused with “New Calvinism” is “neocalvinism” which was a historical resurgence of the Dutch Reformed tradition through Abraham Kuyper. John Piper is responsible for both “New Calvinism” (2014) and the Danver's Statement (1987) and the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (1988). His “12 Points of New Calvinism” has “Complementarianism” as a cornerstone tenant, among other tenants I find questionable. Question Time Stamps for Quick Reference:0:00 - Introduction1. 0:11 {About the “5-Fold Ministry”} Have you heard of the "5-Fold Ministry" way of thinking about apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers exercising those gifts today? And if so, what are your thoughts about it?2. 12:40 {When does Competition become Unbiblical?} The Bible stresses the importance of unity within the body of Christ. When does competition among believers (even seemingly friendly competition - games, sports, etc.) become unhealthy?3. 16:21 {What is “Fundamental Christianity”?} Can you define "Fundamental Christianity" for me? Recently I've been seeing it referred to as a negative thing. Is it?4. 20:48 {Why do Animals Die or Become Extinct?} If “the wages of sin is death,” why do animals die? (My question also involves the extinction of the dinosaurs - why would God create them to be exterminated?)5. 26:51 {Using the Morality Argument} If using the morality argument, how would you respond to an unbeliever that uses the objection that morality is subjective and there is no real objective right or wrong?6. 32:30 {About Feeling Angry toward God} When someone is angry at God, are they able to bring that to God, or do they wait until they are not angry and then go to God? Do we have to be 100% before talking with God, as to not disrespect Him?7. 38:55 {About John 15 – Bearing Fruit} What do you think of the view that states that in John 15, Jesus actually said in Greek that those who don't bear fruit are lifted up instead of cut off? Is this us practicing bad Greek?8. 42:45 {About Gratitude in the Midst of Hardship} When I was an atheist, I got depressed and actually planned to end my life to escape all its struggles. I now know God exists, but I can’t be grateful for being created. How do I repent from that?9. 47:23 {Should Prayer be a Dialogue or Monologue?} About prayer, I’ve heard many people say that praying to God should be more of a dialogue than a monologue. Isn’t the Lord’s Prayer spoken by Jesus a monologue? How should we pray then?10. 50:19 {About Leaving a Church} Is it necessary to ask your church to remove your name from its records if you are leaving due to false teaching/beliefs? I wonder if that’s what God means when He says “come out of her.”11. 53:24 {About 1 Kings 13} In 1 Kings 13, what are we supposed to learn from this passage? It seems as though the prophet lied to the man of God, tricking him so that he wouldn’t stay the course. Why lead him into this trap?12. 1:02:44 {About the 1st Resurrection – Revelation} Will all believers partake of the first resurrection, or only those who have been beheaded in the name of Christ? Revelation 20:413. 1:04:59 {About Matthew 27 – Holy People Raised} Can you please explain Matthew 27: 51-53? Hoping to get some clarity about the holy people raised to life. Where did they go? Did they die again?14. 1:09:19 {About “Divine Simplicity”} Do you believe in divine simplicity? If so, how do you reconcile it with the Trinity?15. 1:11:40 {Did the Covid Mandates Involve a Spiritual Battle?} A lot of believers seemed to believe the Church was being persecuted by being required to wear masks, meet in smaller groups, etc. Was a spiritual battle being waged in the Covid mandates?16. 1:13:51 {About being Used by God in our Lives} I see others being used by God, and I want to be used too. Because of this, I often struggle with envy, jealousy, & comparison. How would you encourage & help me grow past this sin?17. 1:18:27 {About the Death of our Pets} My cat died this week. Where did he go?18. 1:22:03 {How Should we Study Other Religions?} Do you have any recommendations for studying other religions and how to approach others with the intention to evangelize?

Episode Summary: We would be hard pressed to find anyone right now who isn’t going through a hard time, just have experienced a hard time, or headed into a hard time. Yet hard times often challenge our joy. In today’s episode, we talk with guest, Heidi McLaughlin, who experienced several hard times in a row and yet shares with us how she learned to discover joy in the midst of hard times. Quotables from the episode: God is a God of an “upper-story.” Don’t try to figure God out—trust that He has your situation figured out. People often come into our lives to act as sandpaper to us—helping refine our rough edges. Don’t despise the deserts and fires of life. It’s in the fire that our priorities change. We have to plant that which we want to experience in life. If we want companionship, we must be a companion to others. If we want kindness, we must be kind to others. Joy is the portal of heaven. Scripture References: 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 NIV “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Isaiah 55:8-9 NIV “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” Colossians 2:7 NLT Let your roots grow down into him, and draw up nourishment from him, so you will grow in faith, strong and vigorous in the truth you were taught. Let your lives overflow with thanksgiving for all he has done. Have you received a difficult diagnosis?  Or do you have a mom, or a sister, or a friend who has been given a devastating diagnosis?  This conversation is rich with hope for you and your loved ones!  In this special episode, we'll dive deep into the topics of what you can do for those in the midst of a cancer battle or other serious illness and also some very real ways that you can keep walking, one day at a time, if you're the one in a health crisis.  My dear friend Kelly Sipan is sharing her story of going through a cancer diagnosis first with her mom and then for herself.  Her diagnosis began when she was living overseas as a missionary, but now she calls Southern California home where she writes her blog, SoCal Nature Kids, for families wanting to get outside together!  Kelly is a cancer survivor as she has completed her treatments and is a thriving wife and homeschool mom of 4 beautiful children.   Kelly has made all of the resources from this podcast available on her blog in this post.Hope in the Midst of Cancer — SoCal Nature KidsSubscribe to her blog today and follow her on Instagram atKelly
