Time Management Workshop About Andi: Andi Matheny is a 25-year veteran of Hollywood who started the Andi Matheny Acting Studios in 2010 and has coached hundreds of actors to book their first roles in TV and film. Andi has had a recurring role on The Resident as Dr. Kelly Whitley, starred opposite Sara Rue in The Hallmark Channel Movie True Love Blooms, opposite Kelsey Grammer in the film High Expectations, opposite Phylicia Rashad in the Oprah Winfrey production David Makes Man and opposite Ryan Phillippe and Patrick Duffy in the comedy Lady of the Manor, written and directed by Justin Long. Other notable credits include Devious Maids, The Mentalist, Ugly Betty, Zoey 101, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, and The Shadow Effect. Andi hosted the talk shows Friends or Lovers, Essentials, Fit Resort and Spa, and Kwik Witz. She appeared in dozens of commercials, including a worldwide campaign for Olay. Andi won the Jury Prize for Best Florida Film for her directorial debut The Newest Member at the 2017 Sunscreen Film Festival. Her web series Good Morning St. Pete! which she wrote, directed, and starred in, won Best Web Series at the 2018 Sunscreen Film Festival and garnered her the Best Leading Actress Award at the 2018 Tampa Bay Underground Film Festival. Andi's groundbreaking book “Act ALIVE: The Essential Guide to Igniting and Sustaining Your Working Actor Career” was published in 2022 and debuted on Amazon at #3 in Acting and Auditioning. Get the book: Act Alive How hosting has changed. Human beings are interesting. hHere is a thing that beginning actors and even experienced actors do. They'll look at a script, right? And the script will say things like, "I hate you, you have ruined my life, blah, blah, blah." And everybody jumps to the conclusion of, “Well, this is an angry scene, and I got to say, I hate you, and you've ruined my life.” The hot person confrontation is when you find somebody, this "hot person" in your life who has screwed you over, and now you're kind of doing the fantasy version of talking to them the way you wish you could have talked to them in that moment. As a coach, I'm not interested in your excuses. I'm interested in what you're going to do about it. In spite of all the odds against you. If your job is to act, you better get fucking good at acting. Understand what casting directors had been trying to get through my head, which is, I want you to be good. When you audition, you are solving somebody's problem. So when you have the working actor mindset, you show up in a collaborative, helpful spirit to help solve the casting director's problem because the casting director has pressure on them to fulfill all of these roles. As soon as you make it about the other person and not about you and your ego, that's when your bookings are going to start soaring. Art comes from a totally different place. You've got to be connected. You have to be connected from your soul, from a soul level, to what you're doing. Sometimes the less, the better.

Star Trek Continues is an American fan-made web series set in the Star Trek universe. Produced by the nonprofit charity Trek Continues, Inc. and Dracogen, and initially co-produced by Far from Home LLC and Farragut Films, the series consists of 11 episodes released between 2013 and 2017. The series is an unofficial direct continuation of Star Trek: The Original Series, and emulates its visual and storytelling features to achieve the same look and feel. Those who made the show have said in interviews that the intent was to finish the original five-year mission of the show, and this is borne out in the plot lines of the final two episodes. The series was fan-created and all episodes were released to watch on YouTube. As with all such Star Trek fan productions, the use of copyrighted and trademarked properties from the original series was allowed so long as the production was not commercial. A portion of the funds necessary to produce the episodes was raised through successful Kickstarter and Indiegogo campaigns, to which thousands of backers contributed. Star Trek Continues won a Webby Award for "People's Choice – Long Form Drama" in 2016, a Geekie Award for "Best Web Series" in 2014, and numerous Telly and Accolade awards. The series was very positively received by critics, who praised the quality of the production and stated that the show set a new standard for Star Trek fan films. After the 11th episode was released in late 2017, the Star Trek Continues series ended.

His early obsession with musical theatre and classic television made him a prepubescent entertainment nerd. At 15, a close family friend who owned the Apollo theatre, gifted him with his first piano. The pursuit of a BFA in acting for Musical Theatre led him to productions in dozens of regional theatres, tours and of course in NYC (a couple of la Cage aux Folles, a few Chicago’s, a bunch of South Pacific’s and others plus Howard Crabtree's Whoop Dee Doo). Others might have retired after doing a drag strip tease for Mike Nichols while singing I’ve Got To Be Me, but not Steven. Steven voiced The Crimson Chin Shorts (Nickelodeon- Fairly Odd Parents), the daily horoscope reports for AT&T, and many commercials. And then there was a five-year-run on Tom Fontana’s OZ for HBO where he worked with many of his idols from Broadway. As a writer, Steven wrote the LA Emmys for 5 consecutive years. He was the Creator/Executive Producer of the pilot/web series "Life Interrupted" (released 2/14/16) that stars Mason Reese, Alison Arngrim, Dawn Wells, Erin Murphy, Robbie Rist and Michael Learned. The show garnered nearly 20 Festival Awards including Best Web Series at The San Pedro International Film Festival, and multiple awards for the Principal Actors, Direction, Editing.

Carmen's Demo Reel See Carmen in action here: https://youtu.be/Yd-iXM8dk-Y Gratitude A recurring theme from many survivors is gratitude. Many of us, while we don't recommend the stroke experience, feel a sense of gratitude for the life we have now. I'm one of them. Carmen talks about how grateful she is for her life today. Neuro Nerd Joe Borges expressed that sentiment, too. As did Kristen Aguirre and Vince Holland among others. I get that not everyone will feel that way. Sometimes the particular deficits we are left with make that harder. And some people don't make it. We may be grateful because we realize things could have been so much worse. But many times stroke makes us reassess our life. It suddenly interrupts normal life. Everything has to stop, whether we want it to or not. And that interruption isn't just about a week off. It can be months or years. And that interruption is a time to stop and rethink what we are doing. That's interruption can be something we are grateful for. It makes us stop and make decisions about how we want to live our lives going forward. While I might like to see all my deficits go away tomorrow, I wouldn't want to not have had this experience. It's made me who I am today. And it's brought amazing people into my life. But again, I don't recommended having a stroke. While Carmen and I and others had to be forced into this shift, if you haven't had a stroke, you can still take a break and rethink your priorities to make sure they really are bringing value into your life. And take some time to put together your own gratitude practice to recognize the things that bring value to your life. Waukesha, WI Waukesha, WI is Carmen's home town. With a population of roughly 70,000 people, it's just outside Milwaukee, and a couple hours away from Chicago. And the town has really embraced Carmen. She's working on civic projects, and the love she has for the community really comes through in our conversation. Art and Stroke Carmen talks about the change to her art since her stroke. Her description sounds more disciplined and focused that before. Before her stroke, she described her art as embodying the idea of catharsis -- a building and building until it bursts through. Since her stroke, it seems less chaotic. More refined, focused, and discipline. Here's an article about the interview Carmen did just before her stroke. In addition to the changes brought on by our disabilities, stroke can affect us in other ways. I find my writing to be more focused now. But the example that really jumps out at me is the conversation I had with Seth Shearer a couple years back. You can listen to that conversation at http://Strokecast.com/Seth Seth is a Seattle artist. After his stroke, his art changed dramatically. The change was so dramatic it felt like a different person painted it. Seth began to paint under his middle name of Ian because of the difference. The things we want to say and how we want to say them are influenced not just by the outside world, but by how we perceive the outside world. Our senses provide raw data, but our brains create meaning from that data. And when our brains change, the way they create that meaning also changes. Our ability to then express that meaning is impacted by how our brains can use our bodies, by how we can focus on a thing, and by the volume of mental resources we can bring to bear on bear on the project. And that can be a beautiful thing. Aneurysm Basics An aneurysm is an often misunderstood medical condition. The general public thinks it's when the brain just starts bleeding catastrophically. And that's close, but not quite right. In reality an aneurysm is a weak spot or bubble in the side of a blood vessel or at a spot where the blood vessels divide. As long as the aneurysm doesn't break, leak, or get too big, you can go your whole life with an aneurysm and never know it. Millions of people walk around with aneurysms in their brains and will never know. Carmen's aneurysms manifested for 10 years as migraines. That bulge in the wall of a vessel can cause problems and press against stuff it shouldn't. Remember, there's not a lot of extra space inside our skulls. They're pretty well packed. Unfortunately many folks don't get the scan that can show the aneurysm. You can't treat an aneurysm if you don't know it exists. If you do learn it exists, there are some amazing surgical procedures to treat it. Or if it's minor enough neurologists may suggest leaving it alone But sometimes they are weak enough that they break. And when they rupture and send blood coursing directly into the brain, the results are catastrophic. Many hemorrhagic strokes are caused by ruptured aneurysms and folks who survive are quite lucky. Motus Nova Motus Nova is a sponsor this week. I just started using the Motus Hand device. It's an air-powered, computer-controlled, robotic exoskeleton for my affected hand. It's a therapy tool, rather than an adaptive tool. One thing I really like about it is the way it collects data and scores my performance on its video games. It's sometimes hard to see the gains we make in therapy over time because they happen slowly. But the reports and data make it much easier to see improvements over time. I also learned after my first session that I have much less wrist extension than I thought. So now I know one more thing to specifically target. If you'd like to see if the Motus Hand or Motus Foot can help with your recovery, visit http://Strokecast.com/MotusNova and use the code Strokecast for 10% off your first month. Hack of the Week Clamps are an essential tool in woodworking. They give the carpenter and extra, super stable hand. You know who else can use an extra, super stable hand? Stroke survivors with limb weakness! A simple clamp is something you can use to hold a thing in place. Maybe that's a piece of timber. Maybe it's a cutting board. Maybe it's a piece of paper you're trying to sign. The variety of clamps available is mind boggling. The right one depends on what you want to do. You can find a bunch of different options on Amazon here.* Here's one in particular that seems one-hand friendly. I may need to pick up a few myself.* And of course, I'm still have a warm feeling for the traditional C-Clamps of my youth. You can find those here.* Explore some different options. And the next time you try something and think, "This would be a lot easier with two (or three or four) hands," make a mental note to look for a clamping solution. Links Where do we go from here? That inner voice is calling to you – will you answer? Inside each of us is the call of the Goddess, or as I like to say, a purpose; something we were all meant to do and meant to be. This call is powerful beyond measure, and if you listen to it and really pay attention to what is being told to you, it will not only guide your life, but provide the opportunity, too. This has manifested for me in creating PurposeGirls – my calling is to inspire, and to light women up. Today's incredible, passionate, brilliant guest has listened to her calling – as she says – from the moment she could think. Nicole Ansari is an award-winning actor, director, writer and producer who has been living her purpose since before she even knew it was an active decision to do so. When you live in alignment, the opportunities come – and Nicole is the living example of that happening. In this episode, Nicole and I talk about: Nicole's incredible journey of discovering her calling, answering the damn phone, and living it every day. How to learn to understand the signals you are getting – both internal and external - so you can find and live in your own calling and purpose. Positive evidence of someone who has found success – even in a potentially challenging industry! – living in her purpose, so you know you can also live in yours. Juicy details about Nicole's newest project: About Nicole Ansari: Nicole Ansari's professional life began in her teens as an actor in Tatort, an iconic German Cop TV series. Ansari studied with the late legendary Uta Hagen, of HB Studios, with Susan Batson at the Actors Studio in NYC and at the Stage School of Dance and Drama in Hamburg. After two feature films for German TV, her first professional engagement was with the Repertory company Neumarkt Theater in Zurich. Following this, she joined the famed Théâtre du Soleil under the direction of Ariane Mnouchkine, in Paris and on a European tour. Her next steps led to being a guest star at the Public Theatre in Vienna in leading roles, multiple arthouse movies and TV shows, including HBO's Deadwood. She continued on to London's West End and Broadway, performing with her husband Brian Cox, and eventually creating a home base in New York. Ansari co-produced two feature Films; “Blumenthal”, a comedy in the New York Theatre world, starring her husband Brian Cox and the thriller “As Good As Dead” with Andy McDowell. Adding to her CV as Co-producer + director, is the short documentary “Padim at PS3” about the Arts program in a NYC public school and the web series “Messy”. Messy has garnered numerous awards on the festival circuit including Best Director and Best Dramedy at the British Web Awards; Best Web Series at the NY International Film Awards, and best Web Series at the Chicago Independent Film Awards. As a director, Nicole also worked with the Rubin Museum of Art and NY Women in Film. Ansari's lifelong interest in the healing arts brought her to study and train with some of the great teachers of our time. She is a certified Yoga Therapist, Kundalini Yoga, Pre and Postnatal Yoga Instructor, a Life Coach, Theta healing practitioner and a feminine movement teacher. She also has an online Hemp business. Storytelling, for her, is a healing art and she has been merging her interests in helping others to live a passionate life fueled by their wild, authentic self. Nicole has created ACTORS RISING, a program for actors and speakers merging the spiritual path with the Arts. Today we are speaking with an amazing young lady, Jazz Thornton. Having overcome childhood abuse and 14 suicide attempts, Jazz Thornton has now dedicated her life to speaking hope and creating change in the area of mental health. She grew up in Timaru, New Zealand, moving to Auckland when she was 16. She struggled with mental health for as long as she can remember. As a child she had trouble regulating her emotions and as she got older this became increasingly worse. Finally when she was 20 she had a conversation that pivoted her life – and her first book, Stop Surviving Start Fighting, published by Penguin, is based on this conversation. In 2017 Jazz began studying film and television where she directed her first short film "Dear Suicidal Me." The film went viral, being shared on international media around the world and gaining over 80 million views. Not long after that Jazz became the youngest New Zealander to win the annual Doc Edge pitching contest where she pitched her first series idea Jessica's Tree, which she went on to direct. Our special guest today is actor, writer, director and producer Dennis O’Neill. He is a Telly Award Winner, and he’s also the creator, writer, producer, and lead actor in the Web/TV show “Bail Out” which won the 2018 award for Best Web Series at the Lake Charles Film Festival. Dennis began his professional acting career on the stage and now has worked on more than ninety-five film and TV shows, numerous commercials, and TV soap operas like “The Guiding Light,” “Another World,” and “One Life to Live.” He starred with Chuck Norris on the hit TV series “Walker, Texas Ranger,” appeared on the popular TV show “Prison Break,” and worked as a “stunt double” for Robin Williams in several films. Dennis is also a singer/songwriter, author, and teacher whose acting classes and workshops have trained students all over the country and in Europe. But for Dennis, it hasn’t always been “bright lights” and “applause.” Growing up in a “dysfunctional” family in the projects in Brooklyn, New York, Dennis battled alcohol and drug addiction for many years and became swept up in the violence and gang culture that was prevalent in his neighborhood. In our segment today called “Radically Delivered,” Dennis will share how after almost 20 years of drug and alcohol addiction, one night, he experienced a “suddenly” and was touched and overtaken by the miraculous power of God and His “light” which freed him from his dark past and set his life on a totally new trajectory. Now Dennis is allowing that same light to shine through him as he shares his testimony and the grace, mercy and love of God with everyone he meets.

TV host, writer and producer Steve Goldbloom has done a lot in his 31 years on the planet: the Canadian (dual citizenship, yo) created the PBS Digital Studio comedy series Everything But the News, where he documented his misadventures exploring the tech scene, and which USA Today named Best Web Series. This was after his stint as a correspondent for the PBS NewsHour. He currently produces a weekly segment on PBS called Brief but Spectacular which is, he says, an interview without the interviewer. Now he's launching Intimacy with Strangers, where he speaks with various people about intimacy, for Discovery and for this episode, we did something entirely unprecedented: while I interviewed him for the podcast, he simultaneously interviewed me for Intimacy With Strangers. Did this meta double project work? We'll find out when you listen to this podcast while watching the Intimacy with Strangers episode (that's overly ambitious, I get it; also I have no idea when IWS will air). Since he is neither an addict nor a person with serious issues (my diagnosis), we focused the conversation on developing and maintaining healthy relationships. In this episode, we discuss relationships that cause you to stare at the ceiling wondering what's happened to your life, whether or not just a few sessions with a therapist can do the trick and if, when we saw Boyhood and he elbowed me every few minutes, we were on a date or not (TBD).
