Featuring Alex Han, Asha Ransby-Sporn, and Alderwoman Jeanette Taylor on Chicago's left political experiment. In the wake of Zohran's remarkable victory in New York, organizers all over the country are taking a close look at Chicago under Mayor Brandon Johnson. A Chicago Teachers Union leader elected in 2023, Johnson's win was the culmination of years of militant labor and social movement struggle. But while much has been achieved, Johnson and his allies have also suffered many defeats--and the mayor's approval ratings are alarmingly low. In this episode, three long-time local organizers, including a socialist member of city council, analyze the state of the left's bid for governing power and what broader lessons it holds. The Story of 200 Forgotten Murder Victims By Robert Riggs They were daughters. Mothers. Sisters. Strangers. Their lives ended violently—and their names were lost to time. For more than half a century, Detroit's forgotten dead lay buried beneath weeds and silence—unidentified murder victims dumped into paupers' graves, sometimes stacked in vaults three-deep, known only by numbers in crumbling cemetery logs. No names. No justice. No answers. This is the remarkable five-year journey of a team of relentless female investigators who pledged to identify more than 200 victims of Detroit's outstanding murder cases. Led by Detroit Police Detective Shannon Jones and FBI Special Agent Leslie Larsen, this group of dedicated women—detectives, agents, forensic anthropologists, and scientists—literally dug through the past to bring closure to families and justice to the murdered. Their quest became known as Operation UNITED, the largest coordinated exhumation of cold case murder victims in FBI history. Katherine Schweit tells the story of this unprecedented, five-year mission in her book, Women Who Talk to the Dead. Schweit is a former FBI Special Agent Executive, Chicago prosecutor, and journalist. She wrote the FBI's seminal report on mass shooters and is a recognized expert in crisis response and workplace violence. If you or someone you know is searching for a missing loved one, there's a tool that can help. The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, or NamUs.

    Life of the Record
The Making of A RIVER AIN'T TOO MUCH TO LOVE by Smog - featuring Bill Callahan

    Life of the Record

For the 20th anniversary of the Smog album, A River Ain't Too Much to Love, we take a detailed look at how it was made. Bill Callahan began recording music under the name Smog in 1988 and releasing music on his own label, Disaster. After signing with Drag City early on, he released a series of albums in the 1990s and continued into the early 2000s. At this point, he was living in Chicago and wanted a change of scenery. After moving to Austin, Texas, he began writing songs for his 11th album. He decided to abandon the Smog name and start using his real name, but Drag City asked him to wait until the next record before making that change. After a two week tour with Jim White on drums and Connie Lovatt on bass, the three of them immediately went into Willie Nelson's studio, Pedernales, to begin recording the album. A River Ain't Too Much to Love was eventually released in 2005. In this episode, Bill Callahan reflects on this period of his life when he was in his late thirties and felt like he wanted to settle down. By moving to Austin and buying a house with a yard, he found himself spending a lot more time in nature, which greatly impacted the songs he was writing. Despite having writer's block initially, his songwriting opened up when he bought a nylon string guitar and taught himself fingerpicking for the first time. This new approach to guitar playing really shaped the song arrangements and how his vocal would come across. Callahan describes how this transitional time in his life inspired him to give up the Smog name and start using his own name to reflect his newfound approach to making music. From the leap of moving somewhere without knowing anyone, to recording as a power trio, to the importance of a good title or central image, to taking inspiration from Mickey Newbury and Johnny Cash, to key overdubs by Joanna Newsom and Thor Harris, to a recording malfunction that lead to barely audible bass, to the lacking nature of waltz time, to a clear sound like a river, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch five years ago, we've published more than 25,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 130,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.

When the ground keeps shifting beneath us, courageous leadership means leaning into what's real; our experience, our humility, and our values. Mary Lynn Fayoumi, President and CEO of HR Source, brings decades of wisdom in workplace culture and HR leadership. She guides organizations through disruption with a clear focus on purpose and people, and she shows us how to do the same. We talk about what it takes to lead right now, when answers aren't clear and the pressure to act feels constant. Courage today looks less like having all the answers and more like pausing to process, listening deeply, and staying grounded in what matters most. It's about creating space for others, knowing your true north, and responding instead of reacting. Mary Lynn reminds us that it's okay not to know everything, and that strength often shows up as steady presence, not quick decisions. We slow down, reflect, and lead with calm, curiosity, and a focus on what truly matters. That's how we move forward together. Highlights 1. Calm Is a Superpower - Learn how to find your center and lead from it—even when everything around you feels chaotic. 2. Authenticity Builds Trust - Being real, showing emotion, and admitting you don't have all the answers creates space for others to do the same. 3. Processing Takes Practice - Hear why leaders need built-in reflection time and how routines can anchor clarity in the middle of noise. 4. Humility Creates Momentum - Letting go of control opens the door to innovation and stronger team engagement. It's about leading with people, not above them. 5. Purpose Is the Compass - When the path is uncertain, returning to your mission helps guide every decision with confidence and care. As hard as it is for me to believe, it's August. It's hard for me to believe it's August because it just felt like it was January. I was feeling a little tense about a number of things on the horizon at that time. Thank goodness none of the feared chaos materialized. (6SS) Okay, perhaps a little… Perhaps a lot. It might surprise you to know that it wasn't Kelly Clarkson who came up with that concept. It was German philosopher, Fredrich Nietzsche. It can be found in his book, from 1888 called Twilight of the Idols. It's an expanded philosophical approach to post-traumatic growth. This year has been the most stressful since the 2020-2022 Pandemic Era. If you recall, those challenges made our industry stronger, made us stronger. It's a challenge to talk about life and death in the context of design. But it's not a stretch at all to discuss these concepts while framing the quality of life and design. Today, you are going to hear from Barrie Sprang of Sapphire Pear.  Barrie shared her background in design, influenced by her grandmother's interest in design school and her father's work in high-end real estate in Cleveland. She expressed her lifelong passion for using color and bold textures in design, citing personal experiences with how colors can impact emotions and spaces. Josh praised her work for its use of color and texture but expressed a critique about her sometimes conservative approach, particularly given her background in the traditionally traditional Midwest.  Barrie and I discuss the challenges of balancing client preferences with personal design philosophy, particularly regarding color choices. Barrie explained how her firm was built around bold, colorful designs, though she still accommodates clients who prefer neutral tones by incorporating subtle pops of color. They explored the impact of design trends, including the "Color of the Year" phenomenon, with Barrie noting that while it can inspire, it often leads to over-saturation in the market and potentially regrettable choices for clients. We talk about the influence of coastal trends on Midwest culture, particularly in Ohio, where different cities like Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland have distinct styles. Barrie explained that post-pandemic, there has been an influx of people moving to Ohio from coastal cities, attracted by its affordable cost of living, lack of natural disasters, and the ability to work remotely. This migration has positively impacted Barrie's business, allowing for more creative and custom design work at a lower cost due to lower labor and trade costs, as well as access to skilled Amish carpenters. How the decline of traditional design centers, noting that the Cleveland Design Center has largely closed, and they now travel to Chicago for client meetings means to those affected. That the model has become less effective due to several factors, including the opening of design centers to the public, which made pricing confusing and diminished the special experience for designers and clients. They also observed that the proliferation of design houses and the ease of finding products online has watered down the quality of design experiences previously offered by these centers. And how the challenges in the furniture industry, particularly regarding pricing, availability, and logistics are changing the way designers specify. How the pandemic and tariffs have affected supply chains, leading to long lead times and unexpected issues. Barrie emphasized the importance of maintaining strong relationships with manufacturers and showrooms to navigate these challenges. They also touched on the logistics of furniture production and distribution, noting the inefficiencies of the current point-to-point system in the U.S. and the potential benefits of a regional approach for some designers. Barrie discussed several design projects, focusing on a colorful maximalist bedroom, a multi-color kitchen in Shaker Heights,

JJ Kinahan is the CEO of IG North America, overseeing Tastytrade, Tastycrypto, and Tasty Live, and is a veteran of over 30 years in the financial markets. From his early days shoveling snow for neighbors in Chicago to trading options on the bustling floor of the CBOE, JJ brings real-world experience and a deep understanding of market cycles, entrepreneurship, and the shifting investing landscape. On this episode we talk about: JJ's journey from a fourth-grade snow-shoveling hustler in Chicago to CEO and respected financial educator Lessons from his immigrant family upbringing, navigating a blue-collar path to college (thanks to baseball) and seizing an unplanned opportunity that redirected his career into trading The value of saying “yes” to new experiences—especially early in your career—and why breaking into offices, showing up, and staying open are career-changing moves Why the status and stigma against the trades is fading, with skilled labor now highly respected and compensated (“plumbers charge like lawyers—as they should!”) The evolution of JJ's career: from summer clerk at the options exchange to running trading operations and eventually leading Tastytrade and Tastycrypto Tasty Live's mission of financial education: daily free live content empowering retail investors with practical, actionable trading and risk management education JJ's active investing toolbox: stocks, options, futures, forex, crypto, real estate, and small business investing, plus the importance of “tuition” (learning cheaply when you're new) Step-by-step practicals: how non-professionals can use conservative options strategies like covered calls and puts to enhance returns on stocks they already own The real way to build wealth: small habits over a long time; why “get rich quick” always ends badly, and the importance of financial discipline Why starting small, managing risk, and knowing your downside before you act are the keys to surviving—and eventually thriving—as an investor Top 3 Takeaways Seize Opportunity and Say “Yes” Early: Careers—in trading or elsewhere—are built by showing up, embracing new experiences, and being available when opportunity knocks. Discipline and Risk Management are Everything: Start small, define your worst-case scenario, and don't let emotions (or others' hype) dictate your investments. Wealth is Built Slowly, Not Speculatively: There are no shortcuts. Learn, automate good habits, and put your money to work without betting the farm. Notable Quotes “People will pay you for things they don't want to do themselves.” “If somebody cracks the door, just beat it down and keep going until somebody tells you to stop.” “If anyone's telling you there's an instant way to make money—run. There's always risk and reward.” “Financial discipline is not a game—risk not thy whole lot!” Connect with JJ Kinahan: Free financial markets education: TastyLive.com Brokerage and trading platform: Tastytrade.com

In this episode, Jeff returns after a few weeks off — and explains how one press conference in Chicago spiraled into a fabricated international incident with the Mexican government. Representing Ovidio Guzmán (El Chapo's son) became less about legal defense and more about being scapegoated by terrified politicians. In the end, free speech and the truth will always shine through. And the Mexican people?  Jeff notes that his respect for them has grown exponentially. Also covered: Hamas' newest PR strategy — letting Gaza starve while hoarding food in tunnels and filming propaganda videos of emaciated kids (whose fat parents are somehow not starving). The lies grow louder, the propaganda slicker, and yet Western liberal and far-right Jew haters just can't stop blaming Israel and taking it out on Jews. All while the next mayor of NYC will be a Hamas cheerleader who wants government-owned supermarkets and to arrest the Prime Minster of Israel. The downward spiral that began in 2008 nears completion. And finally, Jeff goes full collector mode: a breakdown of the baseball card National Show in Chicago. Too many rooms, too many scammers, but one glorious vintage Orioles cabinet card makes the entire hellscape worth it.

The Smashing Pumpkins were one of the most successful bands of the 1990s, both commercially and critically.  Their 30 million album sales worldwide makes a strong case for their importance to the alternative rock movement.  The band was formed in Chicago by guitarist James Iha, bassist D'arcy Wretzky, percussionist Jimmy Chamberlin, and frontman/guitarist Billy Corgan.  Corgan writes much of their material and has been the sole member to be continuously present in the group since their formation. In 1995, Billy Corgan wrote about 56 songs and wanted to creat a double album.  His vision was for Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness to be "The Wall for Generation X."  The album was intended to be a conceptual piece portraying the cycle of life and death.  The band brought in Flood and Alan Moulder to co-produce the album.  Flood had the band change its routine for this album, having the group start recording in the rehearsal space rather than the studio in order to better capture their live sound.  He also required the band to set aside time in each day for just jamming and song writing in order to keep the process from becoming a grind. The result of this effort was both a critical and commercial success.  "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" debuted at number 1 on the US Billboard 200, the only Smashing Pumpkins album to do so thus far.  The 28 songs spanning two CD's, and three vinyl LP's earned the band nominations in seven categories at the Grammy Awards, and the band won the Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal for the single "Bullet with Butterfly Wings."Lynch brings us this smashing multi-album for today's podcast. 1979The second single from the album features loops and samples, more of a synth-pop sound than had been present previously in Smashing Pumpkin songs.  According to Corgan, this song was the last of the 56 songs he wrote for the album.  The lyrics paint a picture of the transition from youth to adulthood, waiting for something to happen just around the corner.Bullet with Butterfly WingsThe lead single from the album was the band's first top 40 hit in the United States, reaching number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Musically this track has a more grunge vibe than alt rock.  The lyrics are a somewhat overly dramatic portrayal of the pain that comes from being a rock star and the downsides of fame.ZeroThe shortest song on the album relates to a feeling of apathy, and being let down by emotions and spirituality.  "Intoxicated with the madness, I'm in love with my sadness."  Corrigan's signature look is a black shirt with the word "ZERO" printed on the front.Tonight, TonightThe symphonic orchestration of this song shows some of the diversity of the tracks on this album.  The inspiration for this song is Corgan's departure from Chicago to pursue his dreams, leaving an abusive childhood behind.  The Chicago Symphony Orchestra participated in the recording with a 30-piece string section.  This song went to number 36 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and number 7 on the UK Singles chart. STAFF PICKS:Downtown by Neil YoungRob open this week's staff picks with a grunge piece from the Godfather of Grunge.  Members of the band Pearl Jam provide the backing instrumentation for this song and the album "Mirror Ball."  The lyrics reference Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Page, and hippies doing the Charleston and the Limbo.Lump by The Presidents of the United States of AmericaWayne's staff pick is about a woman who is on the singer's mind like a lump of cancer in his brain.  Clocking in at about 2 minutes, this is more of a punk song than alt rock or grunge.Hard as a Rock by AC/DCGregg brings us the first and most successful single from AC/DC's thirteenth studio album "Ballbreaker."  This album marks the return of drummer Phil Rudd to the band for the first time since 1983.  This song has a more blues-oriented sound than the heavy metal sound more typical of their well-known songs from the 80's.   LEI (Laugh/Entertainment/Instrumental)  TRACK:Main Theme from the motion picture "Strange Days"This science fiction film noir movie starring Ralph Fiennes and Angela Bassett takes us out of this week's podcast.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?NXTGen”NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device.
