Chicago's LGBTQ+ library is a space for people to ‘find themselves in the shelves'

Early LGBTQ+ history can be hard to find. Photos, letters, literature and other artifacts have been destroyed or hidden away, in acts of homophobia, out of a fear of repercussions, and even by witting and unwitting family members. “I think a lot of LGBTQ people, when they were passing away, their materials were being destroyed by family members that didn't understand them,” said Jen Dentel, the community outreach and strategic partnerships manager at Gerber/Hart, a large LGBTQ+ library and archive in Chicago. “And so having a space by us, for us, where we would collect and preserve the history became really important.” As we learned in our last episode, some queer women boldly operated sapphic establishments in Chicago during the 1920s and ‘30s. However, there was very little written about these places. Often, the only evidence of their existence came in the form of old newspaper articles reporting on the sudden closure of these businesses at the hands of Chicago police. In this episode, Dentel and Erin Bell, Gerber/Hart's operations director, take us on a tour of this LGBTQ+ library and archive. They uncover archival treasures of the past, reveal unexpected moments in local gay history and explain the mission of the archive: to preserve queer history as a means of achieving justice and equality.

Send us a textIn this episode of At the Bench, Drs. Misty Good and Betsy Crouch welcome Dr. Amélie Collins, an R01-funded neonatologist and associate professor at Cincinnati Children's. A classically trained immunologist turned hematopoietic stem cell biologist, Dr. Collins shares her journey from philosophy major at the University of Chicago to leading a research program focused on fetal myelopoiesis in the context of maternal inflammation. She discusses her training path through MD/PhD at NYU, her formative time in the labs of Dan Littman and Emmanuelle Passegué, and the critical mentorship moments that shaped her career. Dr. Collins offers an honest look at the challenges and joys of long training, pivoting research directions, and starting an independent lab. She reflects on the intersection of science and clinical care, grant writing as a creative exercise, and the importance of celebrating effort and submission, not just success. We also dive into her Cell paper on the extrinsic regulation of emergency myelopoiesis in the fetus, the role of maternal IL-10, and how her lab is exploring how hematopoietic stem cells mature and retain memory of early-life exposures.Dr. Collins leaves listeners with powerful advice: “Do it because you love it. This career demands a lot, including your time, energy, and weekends. But if you love it, it's worth it.”As always, feel free to send us questions, comments, or suggestions to our email: nicupodcast@gmail.com. Today, on Karl and Crew, we continued our weekly “Transformational Tools” theme by discussing the importance of gospel compassion for the laborers of God’s kingdom. As followers of Christ, we know this walk isn’t easy, and when our brothers and sisters are down, we must encourage and minister to each other. We turned to Matthew Chapter 9, where we saw how Jesus ministered and showed compassion to the lame, blind, sick, and those who sought Him. We also had Dr. Jim Coakley join us to discuss the significance of repetition and word choice in scripture, and how it can convey the compassionate traits of the characters involved. Dr. Jim Coakley is a professor at Moody Bible Institute and a current elder at 180 Chicago. He is also a member of the Evangelical Theological Society. He has also authored several publications and books, including “14 Fresh Ways to Enjoy the Bible.” We then had Chris Martin join us to discuss expansion plans and resources for Moody Radio. Chris is the Director of Content for Moody Global Media and Editor of the Bible to Life website. We're diving into Nauvoo polygamy & Joseph Smith's many wives. How often did he have sexual relations with his wives? Was it less frequent than many think? John Turner attempts to answer. Check out our conversation... https://youtu.be/1S-ZRA7kFcQ Don't miss our other conversations with John: https://gospeltangents.com/people/john-turner/ Copyright © 2025 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved Except for book reviews, no content may be reproduced without written permission Insights into Joseph Smith's Controversial Practice The Nauvoo period (1839-1844) in the history of the Latter-day Saints is a fascinating and often controversial chapter, particularly concerning the practice of plural marriage, or polygamy, by Joseph Smith. Historian John Turner, author of the acclaimed biography "Joseph Smith: The Rise and Fall of American Prophet," sheds light on this complex topic. Nauvoo: A New Beginning and an Acceleration of Vision Following Joseph Smith's escape from jail in Missouri, the Latter-day Saints established a new community in Nauvoo, Illinois. The choice of Nauvoo was largely due to an individual named Isaac Galland, a land speculator who had extensive land holdings on both sides of the Mississippi River in Nauvoo and Iowa. Galland was in contact with church leaders even while Joseph was imprisoned, making the possibility of purchasing these lands an early consideration. Upon arriving in Quincy, Illinois, Joseph Smith quickly pursued these land purchases, and Saints began to gather rapidly on both sides of the Mississippi. Despite facing opposition and being advised by opponents to spread out, Joseph Smith characteristically doubled or tripled down on his vision rather than backing down from setbacks. This resolve led to the quick establishment of Nauvoo, a community that by 1844 rivaled Chicago as the largest city in Illinois. Far from an interruption, Nauvoo represented an "acceleration of Joseph's vision" in the years after 1839. The Astonishing Pace of Plural Marriages It is in this rapidly growing and centralizing community that Joseph Smith's plural marriage practice truly took off. John Turner noted that the pace of Joseph's marriages was "astonishing," with him reportedly taking a dozen wives in 1842 alone. While "monogamy affirmers" or "polygamy skeptics" contend that these events did not occur, most scholars, including John Turner and Larry Foster, agree that the evidence for Joseph Smith's practice of polygamy is "overwhelming". The Evidence: What Do We Know? While it is difficult to precisely date exact timelines or get directly inside Joseph Smith's mind to understand his intentions, there is substantial evidence regarding his polygamous activities. Joseph Smith took pains to keep his plural marriages quiet. However, information comes from: Contemporary Accounts:The William Clayton Journalis described as a "fantastic and extensive contemporary account" that is considered reliable, aligning with other early 1840s sources. Journals kept by Willard Richards and Brigham Young also provide corroborating information. Affidavits and Testimony:Numerous affidavits about Joseph's plural marriages exist, including very late sources like the Temple Lot testimonyfrom a number of his wives and other individuals. Even though the church had a particular purpose in affirming Joseph's polygamy in this legal conflict, testimonies from women like Emily Dow Partridge were "not flattering for Joseph Smith," making it unlikely the church fabricated them. According to Turner, it's an "open and shut case" that Joseph Smith practiced polygamy. Theological Motivations: Getting "All That You Can" Joseph Smith himself did not explicitly articulate a singular reason for the exact number of women he married. However, contextually, and based on what other early Latter-day Saints said about plural marriage during these years, it appears that Joseph connected "the size of an individual's family on earth ...

And there are numerous stories of their hauntings. (Radiant Boy) *** Grace Stevens was excited to attend her company's annual picnic with friends and co-workers, dressing for the occasion, hoping to possibly meet her future Prince Charming. Her company was splurging and inviting everyone to take a ship from Chicago across Lake Michigan to attend the party in Michigan City. They never arrived. (Grace Stevens And The Tragedy Of The U.S.S. Eastland) *** In 1947 a woman jumped to her death from 86th floor of the Empire State Building… yet today, her ghost still needs to use the building's bathroom facilities. (The Haunted Empire State Building Bathroom) *** But first,, the governor called it “mass murder” in 1942 when forty-seven patients died at the Oregon State Hospital – all within hours. All of them, poisoned. Finding the murderer and motive would lead to an unexpected conclusion, and to an unrelenting haunting. We begin with that story. Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTHLiara is about to get married to Kyle. A simple eloping at city hall so they can put all their money towards her dream house & their honeymoon to Italy. Kyle comes in to say I'm not going to Italy with you....I'm going to Thailand! He just needs a month or two. Also, he quit his job. I don't think it's gonna work out. They're donezo so she goes to talk to her mom. Her mom tells her that she should still go to Italy. It's her dream trip. So she goes and the trip starts a little rocky with the honeymoon suite still being decked out for a honeymoon. But that's nothing some sightseeing can't fix. She's talking to her mom constantly, throwing coins in a well which promises that she'll end up getting married in Italy. And it doesn't take long. She ends up meeting Leo. She tries his pastry, they talk about her marrying his grandma, and encourages her to go visit her bakery in Capena which happens to be where her parents met. So instead of getting on her flight home, she hops on a bus to Capena. As she's walking down the street, she sees an picture of a villa for sale for 1 euro - it's a villa that her parents took a picture in front of when they visited. So she buys it, not with any real plans to move there but more like a symbolic gesture. While walking there, Leo drives past her and offers to give her a drive. He gives her some bad news - there is fine print. She has to start renovating the house quickly and be done within a year but you also have to leave the country in 90 days and be gone for at least 90 days or else you're going to get fined big time. Luckily for her, Leo is a handyman. He says he's too busy but we all know he'll be back. He keeps getting incredibly stressed out whenever his dad calls but we're not sure what that's about. They get to work and begin to hang out outside of the renovations, as well. She even joins him to watch some football which is big fun, especially when they hug and he spins her. The sparks are flying. And the house is actually starting to turn around a bit. But one day, a step on her ladder breaks and she falls. She's real sad. He shows up and picks her up, kicks open the gate, puts her in his truck, helps her calm down. And he takes her to his place to take a nice warm shower. He gets her a dress and they go out to dinner together and he opens up about how he graduated from Harvard and his dad was so proud of him but he was miserable, so he came to Italy and never left. He takes her back to her place and her electricity is on and she just starts talking about how she loves it here and loves her villa and loves him! whoa whoa whoa. A couple days later, they're enjoying some time together and they end up kissinggggg. Things are really looking up for the two love birds until Kyle shows up one day. She tells him to GET LOST! But her time is up. She has to leave the country tomorrow. And this hotel chain guy comes by to make her an offer on the house with plans of turning it into an AirBnB. Leo asks her what she wants to do and she says she thinks Chicago is her home but she'll come back to visit. That's not good enough for him and he leaves. She gets the offer and decides that she doesn't want to take it. And the good news is she finds out that she doesn't have to leave. She tells Leo that she wants to finish renovating it and they can rent it as an AirBnb themselves. Her mom finally comes to check out the place and is blown away. And Leo and Liara celebrate with kiss.
