The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly Compensatory Call-In 08/24/24. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. This weekly broadcast examines current events from across the globe to learn what's happening in all areas of people activity. We cultivate Counter-Racist Media Literacy by scrutinizing journalists' word choices and using logic to deconstruct what is reported as "news." We'll use these sessions to hone our use of terms as tools to reveal truth, neutralize Racists/White people. #ANTIBLACKNESS Rekia Boyd & Lenard Clark didn't live to see this week's Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois. John Legend, Kenan Thompson, Lil John, Oprah Winfrey and a litany of other black people and entertainers descended on the "Windy City" to offer a vigorous endorsement of VP Kamala Harris. Gus was truly staggered to see that Lil John was indeed present and even performed one of his hit tunes to liven the festivities. Unfortunately, he did not break into "To the windows, to the walls..." Also in the midwest, enforcement officials revealed additional details in the murder and dismemberment of 19-year-old Sade Robinson. Her suspected White killer may have used popular dating apps to stalk and alcoholic beverages to debilitate Robinson. #SobrietyWouldBeBest #RekiaBoyd #LenardClark #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Ep. 104 Kelly Marie continues her conversation with visual artists Edreys and Alexa Wajed. They share their own experiences with mindfulness and offer practical tips for incorporating it into daily life. They also discuss the significance of cultural icons like Lil Jon and Andre 3000 embracing mindfulness practices. The conversation picks up from last week, effortlessly flowing into topics such as mindfulness in relationships and the unique intersection of mindfulness and black cultural identity. Alexa and Edreys share their insights on using creative outlets as means of self-discovery and healing, recalling memories of their own childhood creativity as avenues to reconnect with their inner selves. Kelly Marie, feeling inspired by their words, reflects on how embracing youthful creativity aids in her professional and personal journey, especially in navigating the complex world of mental health advocacy. Key Takeaways: Mindfulness and art can serve as powerful tools for self-expression and personal wellness, allowing one to reconnect with their true self. Creative activities, such as doodling or playing with Legos, are not just restorative hobbies but are essential for maintaining a sane mind amidst challenging discussions on race and health disparities. Practicing mindfulness involves recognizing and cherishing small, present moments, leading to greater peace and clarity in everyday life. It's important to identify and embrace resources that resonate with you and your cultural identity, even when they come from unconventional sources. Staying true to oneself in various aspects of life, whether professional or personal, can lead to substantial shifts in mindset and opportunities. Resources: Eat Off Art: A collaboration of artists, educators, and entrepreneurs working for community empathy. Cultrue, Inc.: An initiative aimed at making arts accessible for healing. In 2016, Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan premiered their first full length feature film called "Swiss Army Man" at Sundance Film Festival starring Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood, Little Miss Sunshine, The Batman) and Daniel Radcliffe (the Harry Potter series). It was about a man named Hank intent on killing himself before he finds a farting corpse on the beach and a bag of cheese puffs. It isn't long before Hank names this corpse Manny and discovers he is a swiss army man that will provide him a way out of being lost in the woods. At the time: Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan were known for directing music videos such as "Turn Down for What" by DJ Snake and Lil John, "Houdini" by Foster the People, and "Rize of the Pheonix" by Tenacious D. They were collectively known as The Daniels, and not many foresaw them going on to make the film "Everything Everywhere All At Once," which gave them worldwide acclaim and two Academy Awards including Best Director and Best Picture. The A24 Rocks crew takes a deep dive into this absurdist comedy that served as a pedestal for The Daniels to be one of the most respected directing duos in Hollywood. Caution: movie spoilers. Next five A24 films we're reviewing: 37. Equals 38. Into the Forest 39. Morris from America 40. The Sea of Trees 41. Brian talks about the good ol' days were Ohio was one of the top spots to get into MMA and how training in the beginning was a fight everyday just to be at the top of the food chain. Brain tells some great stories of how Lil John was a coach once for an MMA promotion he competed in as well as what it was like to fight for Bellator in the early years of his career. We get into all kinds of stuff in this episode, even a little Ohio sports talk and the current stage of our Ohio sports teams. Brain talks how Mr. Steve Hindman made a huge impact on his career as well. The best movie I have seen in years is called Everything, Everywhere All At Once and it was written and directed by Daniels. Daniels? Yes, Daniels. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, to be specific. Two brilliant artists who met in college and began stitching together short films before working on music videos like Turn Down For What by DJ Snake and Lil John (over a billion views), Simple Song by The Shins, and Tongues by Joywave. Watch those to see their energy and magic. Daniels made their feature-length debut at Sundance in 2016 with Swiss Army Man also known as the “Daniel Radcliffe farting corpse movie” and then followed it up with this twisting multiverse action flick Everything Everywhere All At Once starring Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, and Jamie Lee Curtis. And how's this arthouse flick (with a paltry $25 million dollar budget!) doing? Well, it is the highest rated film of the decade on Rotten Tomatoes. It's being credited with bringing back multiplex crowds post-pandemic. And the people who see it and love it (like I did) end up going back to see it again and again. (You'll pick up so much more on the second time through and now I'm just itching for a third!) Daniels create art for art's sake — that David Foster Wallace Nature of the Fun ethos we've talked about before — and the result is this incredibly provocative and non-conformist stuff that just squeezes your mind until the smiles and tears start rushing out. Let's flip the page into Chapter 101 now… What You'll Learn: What is the greatest compliment for a film-maker? Why should you journal about a project before sharing it with an audience? What is the alpha-verse? Why is kindness a power? How can we evaluate our own projects? What is the tension between listening and hubris? How do the greats deal with imposter syndrome? What is it like to grow up with ADHD? How do people diagnosed with ADHD view the world? How can we learn to appreciate discomfort in art? How do we create visceral emotion in others? How do we supercharge our creativity and access ideas? What are schools doing wrong? What should school curriculums emphasize? How can we cultivate creativity in our kids? Why should we talk more openly about sex? Why should we question what we've been taught about relationships and sex? How can cartoon strips help us answer big questions? Are we living in a post physical world? How does what we consume shape us? You can find show notes and more information by clicking here: https://www.3books.co/chapters/101 Leave us a voicemail. On this week's episode I chat with Sterling Campbell, CEO of Minotaur. Minotaur is a web3 platform that helps people and brands launch NFT projects. There are a lot of steps - including a fair bit of technology - required to take an NFT launch from concept to launch. Minotaur's tech-enabled service does all of this. As they put it, they “bring together artists, blockchain engineers and community managers to build successful NFT projects that can scale.” Sterling has been in NFTs since 2017, which for this space is a long time, so he's been around the block a few times and learned a bunch of stuff. If you are still scratching your head when you hear about NFT, well he breaks it down pretty well in this conversation. He also dives into what's wrong with the industry right now and how he is hoping for a transition to what he calls NFTs 2.0, where NFTs flip from their focus on providing membership access to being technically more integrated as a method for adding value to communities. Sterling is the right guy for this space - he has lived at the nexus of media, entertainment and business. And as far as being in a risky space - that's not really an issue. He tells us about the time his parachute didn't open while sky diving. Oh yeah…and if that wasn't enough…he's a DJ that toured with the likes of Lil John and T-Pain. Enjoy the conversation.
