From tavern keeper to prominent figure in Restoration history, William Marks is the focus of this episode of Cuppa Joe. Host Wendy Eaton sits down with Cheryl Bruno and John Dinger, co-authors of Come Up Hither to Zion: William Marks and the Mormon Concept of Gathering, to hear a little more about what they learned while researching Marks' life. See how this early convert to the Restoration left his “mark” on the church ... both the LDS church and eventually the RLDS church. Here, you'll hear pieces of a longer lecture given for the Historic Sites Winter Book Series. Wendy Eaton joins the Project Zion team for the first time as a host with an episode of Cuppa Joe highlighting the first in the 2025 Winter Series, “An Evening with the Historians.” That's right, the Community of Christ Historic Sites Foundation has put together another great line up of authors who share their latest writings. In this Cuppa Joe episode, Wendy sits down with Kyle Walker, author of Sister of the Prophet: Katherine Smith Salisbury and immediate past president of the John Whitmer Historical Society, to hear a little more about his book and his research. There's just enough here to make you want the book. As Community of Christ moves closer to the historic moment of considering the call of the first woman President/Prophet of the church, Stassi Cramm, there is no better time to reflect with Karin Peter and historian extraordinaire, Wendy Eaton, to take a look across the years at all the women who have had a prophetic influence on the church and its people. In this episode of Cuppa Joe, Wendy presents seven women, some of whom we've heard of and some who are new to Project Zion listeners. Listen in to see just how influential women of the Restoration movement have been and continue to be. The great news is that Wendy isn't done yet. There are more women we need to get to know. The call to prayer made by one woman in Lamoni, IA in the late 1800s sparks the interest of thousands of women around the world and raises the ire of a lot of men. Eleanor Kearney hasn't been spoken of much in the church, but she's another of the unsung women heroes of the church. Because of her feistiness and determination, and in spite of her hearing disability, Eleanor played a significant role in engaging women in ministry and raising awareness of women's contributions to the church. Join host Karin Peter, and guest, Wendy Eaton, for another episode of Cuppa Joe: Women of the Restoration and see what a little determination can accomplish. The Wight family has a long history of serving the church, and Estella Wight was no exception. A prolific author who got her start by submitting a story to Marietta Walker at a young age, and then going on to work for Herald Publishing for many years, Estella filled the minds and hearts of the children and youth of the church through articles, poetry, stories and books. In this latest episode in the “Women of the Restoration” series, Wendy Eaten explains how Estella's contributions to the writings of the church through several publications and published works charmed young and old alike ... all the while proving the inestimable worth of women in shaping the Restoration in ways too often overlooked. No one in their right mind would sign up to go it alone on the frontier ... raising a family, tending a farm, and everything else that goes with it. Well, no one except the women who were part of the early Reorganization. Women whose husbands served as missionaries and were gone for long periods of time. It's those women whose stories we hear in these special episodes of Cuppa Joe. Join two amazing modern-day Women of the Reorganization, host Karin Peter and historian Wendy Eaton, for this episode in the Women of the Reorganization series, to hear the inspiring story of another of those women... We don't have to look too closely to find things in our past that may have been progressive at the time, but are considered embarrassing by many in today's context. In those cases, we must ask, “Face it or erase it?” In this episode of Cuppa Joe, host Robin Linkhart talks with Lach Mackay about the First Presidency's response to World Conference Resolution G-2 which called for Section 116 of the Doctrine and Covenants to be removed and placed in historical records. See why facing it can be the more responsible choice. The history of coffee consumption in 20th century America takes hold in the small cafes, truck stops and coffeehouses which became venues and social spaces for the community. Like music, they helped with the congregation of like minds and served as hubs for intellectual exchange, artistic expression and social activism. And it was all because of the caffeine. Instant and decaf coffees were just an aberration; much like disco. This week's Deeper Roots drives the theme of coffee home with tracks that span the century including Emmett Miller, the King Cole Trio, The Bobs, Ella Mae Morse and Merle Travis (among others) to tell us a cuppa tale or two. It's one more Friday show ahead of next week's 420 observation…one more libation to celebrate.
How is it that someone with so much influence on the church has gotten so little attention? Join host Karin Peter for an insightful discussion on the life and legacy of William Marks, a prominent figure in Mormon history. Historians John Dinger and Cheryl Bruno share their in-depth research and upcoming book release, shedding light on Marks' unwavering faith and enduring influence. Don't miss this captivating exploration of Restoration history. Stay tuned for the release of their book in May! Physical places have always played an important role in preserving history. Much more important for a church called to Christ's mission is how we integrate it into our lives, learn from it, and carry it forward by becoming the storytellers that keep it alive. In this episode of Cuppa Joe, Apostle Lach Mackay (also Director of Historic Sites and a direct descendent of Joseph Smith III) sits down with host Karin Peter, to share his own perspective on the recent sale of important historic properties. He talks about how he is processing the news as well as talks about how he is finding hope for the future ... and how our history will continue to play a vital role in our identity going forward. You don't have to be a church leader to make church history. Bertha Greer made her mark by using her gifts and vocation as a doctor to serve the church. In this fascinating conversation with host Karin Peter, historian and cemetery enthusiast, Wendy Eaton, explores not only Bertha's life and contributions but many of her family as well. You'll even get introduced to a man or two in this episode of the Women in the Restoration series. And, who knows, there might even be a little scandal hiding in here somewhere. We've all heard it before … there's no sense in re-creating the wheel. All we have to do is make a couple of adjustments. Not everyone rides a bike after all. We need wheels adapted for cars, trains, wagons, etc. You get the idea! In this episode of Cuppa Joe, Robin Linkhart and Karin Peter will give a sneak peek into a new resource in the works that takes one of our “wheels” (the Cuppa Joe Theo-History Series) and modifies their content to create usable take-and-go lessons for reunions, congregations, small groups, and individuals. Just another creative way to share the gift that resides in every episode of Project Zion Podcast. It's never too early or too late to stand up for what's right... or to stand against what's wrong. Though it took revelation from Wallace B. Smith to make the necessary change, women, and their advocates, started fighting for equality in the church for many years before that revelation arrived. Thanks to the work of grassroots groups like AWARE, the clarion call for equality and justice was heard around the church. Long before the ordination of women in Community of Christ, women were leading and contributing to the church in critical ways. Take the Sunday School Association and development of study curriculum for children, youth and young adults for instance. Did you know that two of the major players in that development were un-ordained women? And one of them was someone we don't hear much about, Christiana Steadman Salyards. Join host Karin Peter as she sits down with guest Wendy Eaton for another episode of Cuppa Joe in which Wendy gives us some up close and personal insight into this amazing woman in church history. We've said it here at Project Zion many times, and it bears repeating … “We sing our faith into being.” And, we've been doing just that for generations. Over time, because our understandings of God have deepened and our beliefs have shifted from time to time, some hymns no longer fit with the direction that Community of Christ is being called. In comes John Charles Duffy with a fresh perspective on how to honor our past and move into the future with some of those old favorites. Now that this “theo-history” journey is coming to an end, what can we take away from it that will enhance our vision for the future? Much has happened since the start of our movement... some good, some not so good … but all of it is filled with valuable teaching moments that remind us of the experiences that contributed to who we are and provided the foundations for who we are called to become. You may just be surprised at the conclusions to which Karin, Lach, and Tony come … conclusions that have incredible relevancy in light of the issues we face as we enter the next era. The call and ordination of each new President/Prophet of the church has brought with it new and exciting challenges and opportunities. In 1996, the church found itself not only with a new President/Prophet, but the first one not from the family of Joseph Smith and the first not born in the United States. But the firsts didn't stop there. Join host Karin Peter for an enlightening conversation with regular guests Tony Chvala-Smith and Lach Machay as they take a brief look back at the leadership of a man who challenged the church to move from being “a people with a prophet, to [being] a prophetic people” … among other things!Download TranscriptThanks for listening to Project Zion Podcast!Follow us on Facebook and Instagram!Intro and Outro music used with permission: “For Everyone Born,” Community of Christ Sings #285. Music plays a critical role in our lives. From our ABCs to the books of the Bible, words set to music have helped us to learn, challenged us to grow, and taken us to unknown places. Hymnody is no different. Through the singing of our hymns, we have continued to build a foundation for our beliefs. Listen in as host Brittany Mangelson sits down with hymn enthusiast and accomplished musician, Dick Clothier, to talk about the history and impact of hymns in the restoration tradition. Beginning with Emma's 1836 hymnal and continuing on through the current Community of Christ Sings, Hymnody has been deeply ingrained in who we are. Who knows, after listening, you may be inspired to write a hymn of your own.
