Judith Sanders - The Huntsman: A Psychological Thriller. This is episode 598 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Judith Sanders was born and raised in New Jersey, where she spent most of her childhood exploring the great outdoors and dreaming of one day becoming a nurse. After graduating high school, she pursued her passion for healthcare and earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from Graceland University.   The Huntsman is her fourth novel. Her first book, Crescent Veil, is a novel about germ warfare which Heartland Reviews praised as 'nonstop action based on the real deal by authors who should know what they are presenting'. Other books by Judith - In His Stead and Star Finder She was an Indie Excellence Award Finalist for In His Stead and was shortlisted for Chanticleer International Book Awards for Star Finder. She has been featured in interviews by dozens of news media outlets.   Judith's dedication to her profession led her to work on the front lines in community hospitals and as a civilian nurse at the US Army's lead infectious Disease Institute in Maryland, where she gained invaluable experience and knowledge that would shape her life and career.   After raising three boys and moving around, living in Somerville, NJ, San Antonio Tx, Albany, NY, Frederick and Clarksburg MD, Phoenixville, PA, and Leland/Wilmington NC, she and her husband finally settled in rural New Hampshire, where she found solace in the quiet lakeside days and evenings that inspire her writing.   Judith's extensive experience in nursing has not only helped her develop a keen sense of empathy and understanding for people from all walks of life but has also allowed her to draw inspiration for her writing from the stories of real people living and struggling through life one chapter at a time. Her best stories are a collage of bits and pieces taken from these experiences, creating a rich tapestry of characters and situations that resonate with readers of all ages. Frank is Judith Sanders' husband of 42 years and was coauthor on Judith's first book “CRESCENT VEIL”, a fiction novel about the hunt for a biologic weapons terrorist on the loose in the Middle East.   Frank is trained as a medical virologist and had a career in the military (US Army Lieutenant Colonel, retired) and then civilian pharmaceutical medicine developing vaccines to help prevent infectious diseases before retiring from practice in 2022. In the course of Judith's novels Dr. Malinoski has supported and facilitated the publication and promotion of her works.  Frank has been a confidant to Judith in her writing and an early reviewer of her books.  Judith is known for taking bits and pieces of real people she has met to mold the characters she writes about although Frank believes he was not a model for THE HUNTSMAN.   Frank's first reaction after reading THE HUNTSMAN was to decide if he should hide the kitchen knife sets.   Education: BA from Colby College PhD from Rutgers University MD from Albany Medical College of Union University A little bit about The Huntsman… ICU nurse Max Mason fears his pregnant wife is the latest victim of a serial killer who has terrorized their small New Hampshire town. The investigation is at a standstill as the prime suspect, Lincoln Raider, is in a coma. In a desperate and unethical act, Max sits at Lincoln's bedside night after night employing brainwashing techniques and subliminal suggestion to convince the suspect they are kindred-spirits, hoping it will lead to a confession or at least a clue. When Lincoln awakens, he draws Max into a whirlpool of terror, deception, and violence, ultimately pulling Lincoln's wife and daughter into the vortex as well. Cool story! Page turner! Awesome talk! We are born confident and curious and it is only over time that we are repeatedly warned and collecting evidence to have FEAR. Fear holds us back, keeps us stuck, keeps us up at night with worry. F.E.A.R. is simply False Evidence Appearing Real. What keeps surfacing as the way to overcome fear, it is through confidence. Confidence is a muscle that when exercised, becomes stronger. You can build confidence when you have an awareness of yourself, take advantage of neuroplasticity, and practice new ways of thinking and doing to become stronger in your confidence. You want confidence when you're on the path of helping aging family members. It will help you move through challenging situations that you encounter and difficult conversations that need to be had. Here's the video I reference in this episode from a fellow Graceland University alumni, Dr. Ivan Joseph - https://youtu.be/w-HYZv6HzAs --- What's your unice? Nope, it's not a body part or new age term. It's actually your YOU-NESS, but that's certainly not what I thought when I heard this word for the first time! :) What makes you...YOU? What makes you tick? What do you like? Do you feel like you're showing up as your authentic self? This is certainly part of my continued journey of discovery and what I strive for each day. Coach Hassan Nizam,In this episode, you'll hear from Coach Hassan Nizam. This 27-year-old coach is simply known by his players and so many in the Michigan basketball scene as Coach Niz. Coach Niz is currently the Head Coach at Macomb Community College. And, Coach Niz is fresh off leading his program, for the first time in the program's history, to a MCCAA State Championship. As you soon are going to find out, the Energy and Commitment that his Young Coach BRINGS DAILY to the Macomb program is simply off the charts. A product of Dearborn Fordson High School, Coach Niz has been coaching since he was 17. Actually, he knew that he wanted to be a coach when he was in the 5th grade. In 2016-2017, Coach Niz went from the JV Coach at his alma mater to become an assistant for then Coach Taylor Langley at University of Michigan-Dearborn. Coach Langley is currently the head coach at Graceland University. And at the age of 22, Coach Niz was named the Head Coach at Roseville High School. At Roseville, Coach Niz was the youngest head basketball coach in the state of Michigan. During his four years as a High School Coach, Coach Niz guided the program to three district titles and the school's first regional championship while winning close to 60 games. Coach Niz also has coached at the AAU Level with The Family and the Michigan Warriors. Right away you are going to hear that Coach Niz talks about getting the MOST out of people. Throughout the entire conversation, Coach Niz speaks so passionately about helping his players grow on and off the court. Specifically, the level of skill work that they do with their players is tremendous and a must-listen for younger coaches. To me, there is nothing better than having a conversation with a young coach who is coaching for the right reasons. And, Coach Niz is going to INSPIRE a ton of young coaches today via this conversation. Megan Ihnen is a “new music force of nature.” The act of live performance is integral to Megan's work and her performances thrive on elaborate sound worlds and fully-developed dramatic interpretations. Through narrative and non-narrative musical storytelling, she explores the subjects of memory, nostalgia, the perception of time, and relationships. Whether through chamber music, staged recitals, opera, or large ensemble soloist work, she emphasizes the full range of vocal sounds, timbres, colors, and uses that characterize the 21st century voice. Megan is a prolific new music vocalist who has appeared with the International Contemporary Ensemble, Fifth House Ensemble, Latitude49, Great Noise Ensemble, Stone Mason Projects, Rhymes With Opera, SONAR new music, and more. She has sung with many outstanding performers including Nadia Shpachenko, Michael Hall, Gregory Oakes, Nick Zoulek, Hillary LaBonte as well as premiered the work of Mara Gibson, Griffin Candey, Garrett Schumann, Christian Carey, Alan Theisen, Anna Brake, D. Edward Davis, and more. A gifted narrative and non-narrative musical storyteller, Megan's performance work explores the depths of memory, nostalgia, the perception of time, and complex relationships. Ihnen's interpretations of modern and contemporary repertoire have garnered growing acclaim. She is particularly recognized as an excellent recitalist. Her This World of Yes program of contemporary music for voice and saxophone with Alan Theisen explores the themes of pathways, choices, and duality through the work of contemporary composers such as Jessica Rudman, Michael Young, and Michelle McQuade Dewhirst. This World of Yes has been performed across the United States including appearances in Kansas City, New Orleans, Atlanta, Washington D.C., Detroit, and Baltimore. With performances in Washington D.C., Baltimore, Colorado Springs, and Kansas City, Ms. Ihnen has worked with violinist Martha Morrison Muehleisen and Rome Prize winner video artist Karen Yasinsky to take audiences on a profound journey through György Kurtág's Kafka Fragments through video and sound. Finally, Ihnen's Single Words She Once Loved is a performance that centers around the ideas and effects of memory, dementia, and time. It is a deeply personal exploration of the dueling forces of ‘eternal sunshine of the spotless mind' and ‘God gave us memories so that we may have roses in winter'. Single Words She Once Loved features compositions by David Smooke, Ryan Keebaugh, Daniel Felsenfeld, Jeffrey Mumford, and more. Megan has enjoyed performing as part of Tuesdays @ Monk Space, Access Contemporary Music Thirsty Ears Festival, NEXTET, Ethos NewSound, 6:30 Concert Series, International U.S. Navy Saxophone Symposium, SPLICE Festival, Oh My Ears, Second Sunday Concert Series at Boston Sculptors Gallery, Winifred M. In the spring of 2017, Megan undertook a fundraising project for her first album, “Sleep Songs: Wordless Lullabies for the Sleepless.” She commissioned over 25 diverse composers from the United States and abroad to write brief, wordless lullabies for mezzo-soprano. Megan has also had recordings on Navona Records, Hoot/Wisdom Recordings, I CARE IF YOU LISTEN Fall 2015 Mixtape, and the CarpeDM Seize Des Moines “Music Mix: Volume III” which was featured at the 2016 SXSW Festival. As a chamber musician, Megan is proud to have trained at the following summer festivals: impuls International Ensemble and Composers Academy for Contemporary Music, Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice (SICPP), Fresh Inc Festival, Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival at MASS MoCA, and MusicX. Her devotion to the proliferation of new music extends beyond the commissioning and performing of music to teaching, workshopping, and mentoring of emerging artists in the field. She also works to increase the visibility and influence of new music through writing on the subject for multiple online and print publications. As a curator, she selected twenty songs for mezzo-soprano and piano for the NewMusicShelf Anthology of New Music. Mezzo-Soprano, Vol. 1 includes works by: Michael Betteridge, Mark Buller, Stephen DeCesare, Douglas Fisk, Matt Frey, Jodi Goble, Ricky Ian Gordon, Cara Haxo, Cameron Lam, Cecilia Livingston, Shona Mackay, Tony Manfredonia, Nicole Murphy, Eric Pazdziora, Frances Pollock, Julia Seeholzer, Alan Thiesen, Dennis Tobenski, Moe Touizrar, and Ed Windels. Megan was honored to receive a Phyllis Bryn-Julson Award for Commitment to and Performance of 20th/21st Century Music in 2009 and a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award in Classical Music: Solo Performance in 2014. She was an accomplished violist and drama student before pursuing degrees in music and vocal performance from Augustana University and the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. Welcome to episode 98, the count-down to episode 100 continues! In this episode, I have the honor of interviewing Father Andrew Miller. Andrew Miller is an ordained priest in the Celtic-Rite Old Catholic Church He came to organized religion as a teenager when he converted to Mormonism at age 16 where he discovered a love for Theology. While Studying Theology and philosophy in college, he felt himself called to a more orthodox expression of Christianity. For a time, he became an Evangelical Protestant and began seminary in 2009, attending Lexington Theological Seminary in Kentucky with the goal of becoming a Minister in the Christian Church - Disciples of Christ. It was at this time that he felt himself called to a more sacramental and traditional expression of the Christian faith and so became a Greek Orthodox Catechumen. He eventually decided not to be baptized in the Greek Orthodox Church as he was told that he could not receive Holy Communion unless his wife consented to allow his marriage to be blessed in the Orthodox Church, which she was not willing to do.  It was at this point that he became Old Catholic, receiving Baptism and Confirmation in the Ecumenical Catholic Church - USA.  He received a call to ordained priesthood because of a mystical experience at a time of deep depression and returned to Seminary, first at St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, and finally at Graceland University's Community of Christ Seminary from which I finally graduated with a Master of Arts in 2017.  He joined the Celtic-Rite Old Catholic Church because of a long-time personal relationship with then Presiding Bishop Thomas McKenna but has also served in the United States Old Catholic Church and is in formation with the interjurisdictional Society of Christ the King. He is an Associate of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, and a practitioner of Vincentian Spirituality. He was ordained to the Priesthood of the Celtic-Rite Old Catholic Church in 2014 while serving as a Chaplain Resident at KU Hospital.  He spent two years in Clinical Pastoral Education at KU Hospital, both in Residency and in Fellowship.  Andrew enjoys stories, particularly movies and television and much of his writing has been about the theological implications of fictional stories, particularly movies and television.  Through his love of the cinema, he came to know Rev. Michelle Byerly of the United Methodist Church with whom he went to seminary at St. Paul's in Kansas City Missouri. The two remained close friends and together started and co-host the Podcast “A Pastor and a Priest Walk into a Movie Theater.” Together with Rev. Byerly, he is one of the four founders of “New Faith New Media” which is a Progressive inter-religious Podcast Platform, currently hosting two Podcasts: “A Pastor and a Priest Walk into a Movie Theater” and “Faith and What Resonates,” with a third in development. Currently, besides co-hosting his and Rev. Michelle's podcast, he serves on the Core Team of Christ the King Independent Catholic Church in Kansas City, Missouri, is a Volunteer Prison Minister with the Bethany Catholic Callout Group at Lansing Correctional Facility in Lansing, KS.  He is also actively involved in Politics according to his understanding of Social Justice, having served as a Precinct Committee Chair for the Leavenworth County Democratic Party and as a Volunteer Election Researcher with the Democratic Socialists of America. He has been married for 13 years and has a seven-year-old daughter named Scarlett. Links: Convergent Streams: The Premier ISM Magazine. The ISM Database. In the basic beliefs of Community of Christ The Book of Mormon is understood as follows:   We affirm the Bible as the foundational scripture for the church. In addition, Community of Christ uses the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants—not to replace the witness of the Bible or improve on it, but because they confirm its message that Jesus Christ is the Living Word of God. When responsibly interpreted and faithfully applied, scripture provides divine guidance and inspired insight for our discipleship.    That might be so, but its not quite that straightforward in practice, as my guest Elray Henrickson has elsewhere written: "Community of Christ has had a complicated relationship with the Book of Mormon. Although we believe it to be scripture, we can no longer say we are big fans." Community of Christ peace and non-violence activist, Norwegian Elray Henrickson,  joins me from Belgium where he lives with his husband, Anton.  Elray attends the Graceland University seminary and has been working on repurposing and rethinking the Book of Mormon for a post-literal context.
