Among many of those Nauvoo Saints who did not choose to follow Brigham Young and the Twelve Apostles into the mountains of Utah, there was an emerging hope that someone from the Smith family would step forward and begin a reorganization of the Church Joseph Smith Jr. had established. In 1851 a soft reorganization began and built up to that culminating moment of 1860 when the eldest son of Joseph and Emma Smith, Joseph Smith III, stepped forward at the age of 28 and was ordained president of what they referred to then as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or RLDS Church. Over time their method of succession in their presidency developed upon a different set of criteria than that of their Utah-based cousins, as did many of their practices, policies, programs, and governing principles. In 2001 the name of the RLDS Church was changed to Community of Christ, and today this is the second largest branch of the Restoration movement.  In this episode of Church History Matters, Casey and Scott sit down with Andrew Bolton, a friend and member of the Community of Christ who served in their Council of Twelve Apostles from 2007 to 2016. Together we take a deep dive into the details of how succession works in this movement, while also considering some key similarities and differences between our two Restoration branches today. There is a lot to unpack—literally and figuratively—in the Metropolitan Museum's Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” which closes on September 2. It's about nature and the cycle of life (and as it turns out, there is a lot about death). It also touches on chemistry, biology, mythology, and so much more, all told through the lens of fashion. Added to this litany of themes, the show also tells the story of The Met itself, and the goings-on behind the scenes. It's about how archived garments are preserved and how they are disintegrating. It's not just about clothes, but about how they were worn and who wore them. It tells the story of us. It's a visceral exhibition of over 400 years of fashion that engages the senses. It can be a heady experience. There are the sounds of waves crashing, and birds calling, and poems being read aloud. There is textured wallpaper you can touch—and courtesy of the German artist Sissel Tollas, wallpaper you can scratch and sniff and tubes you can snort. Frankly, this portion of the exhibit kicks like a mule and is unforgettable, with scent being such a powerfully triggering memory force. “Sleeping Beauties” was curated by this week's guest Andrew Bolton, the Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, who previously helmed such blockbusters as “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty,” “China Through the Looking Glass,” and “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” which were some of the most visited exhibitions in the museum's entire history. Today's fashion-exhibit-heavy museum landscape has a lot to do with Bolton's successes, but with his trained anthropologist's eye, he never fails to zero in on the intellectual and human connotations in the garments.

Creative consultant and iconic figure Amanda Harlech has played a key role in fashion for decades. Harlech is recognized for her insightful, ultra-collaborative approach, her influential work with brilliant designers, and her mentorship of young designers. She initially joined forces with John Galliano in the '80s and '90s before later joining Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel. For her, creative sensitivity and a willingness to work are facilitating forces in an industry that she sees as evolving in a more collaborative direction. Though she surprisingly calls herself not quite “a fashion person,” Harlech's prolific career has shaped parts of contemporary fashion design and showcased her intuitive understanding of creative storytelling. Illustrating a unique narrative of artistic connection, Harlech notes that the enduring allure of craftsmanship is what's contemporary now.  Episode Highlights: Creativity and make-believe: Harlech has vivid memories of being surrounded by storytelling and fashion, which were emphasized in her life from an early age by those around her. “It's a way of navigating life:” Weaving fictions and working with fantasy is how Harlech has always sourced creative inspiration, from childhood collaging to designing gowns. Career trajectory: Harlech went from working at Harper's Bazaar and The Face to working with Galliano, a collaboration she calls “so powerful.”  Collaboration rather than competition: Harlech found Galliano's designs emotionally powerful, and their active collaboration is contrasted with a more passive one while working with Karl Lagerfeld for 27 years. She discusses collaborating with Andrew Bolton for the most recent Met Gala in celebration of Lagerfeld.  Collaborative evolution: While Lagerfeld, for instance, directed teams based on his genius, Harlech notes that contemporary labels tend to create entire creative communities wherein designers all bring something unique to the garments. Creative sensitivity: Harlech's intuitive understanding of a collection's intention and rhythm has propelled her throughout the years.  “I am this undefinable thing:” Surprisingly, Harlech says, “I'm not really a fashion person, although I love the whole creative process that goes into a collection.” She describes herself as a facilitator above all else, synthesizing creative energies among the many individuals any collection or shoot requires.  Other forms of collaboration: Enjoying how mentorship “switches the light on” in her head, Harlech brings her know-how to the energy and willingness of Central Saint Martins students. Progress and its countermovements: Discussing AI's ever-increasing role in creative design, Harlech takes a positive stance, remarking on the emergence of support for and dialogue with the hands-on, artisanal work that goes into design.  What's contemporary now: Harlech takes the question in a mythical direction with ancient myth and ritual, paying homage to “the old ways, the skill of making, craft.”

She dressed like a teenager even in her 60s and became an outspoken advocate of fighting climate change, warning of planetary doom. 魏斯伍德漫長的職業生涯充滿矛盾:她一生都是反叛者,多次受到伊麗莎白二世女王的嘉獎。六十多歲時仍穿得像青少年,她也大力倡導對抗氣候變化,警示地球的毀滅。 In her punk days, Westwood's clothes were often intentionally shocking, but she was able to transition from punk to haute couture without missing a beat, keeping her career going without stooping to self-caricature. 龐克時代的魏斯伍德,她的衣服常刻意驚世駭俗。但魏斯伍德能夠從龐克過渡到高級時裝而不失節奏,讓她的職業生涯得以延續,卻不致自打嘴巴。 “She was always trying to reinvent fashion. Her work is provocative, it's transgressive. It's very much rooted in the English tradition of pastiche and irony and satire. She is very proud of her Englishness, and still she sends it up,” Bolton said.Westwood was self-taught, with no formal fashion training. She told Marie Claire magazine that she learned how to make her own clothes as a teenager by following patterns. When she wanted to sell 1950s-style clothes at her first shop, she found old clothes in markets and took them apart to understand the cut and construction. It was also an important step in an ongoing rapprochement between Westwood and the fashion world. The rebel eventually became one of its most celebrated stars, known for reinterpreting opulent dresses from the past and often finding inspiration in 18th-century paintings. 這也是魏斯伍德與時尚界之間持續和解的重要一步。這位反叛者最終成為最著名的明星之一,以重新詮釋過去的華麗禮服而聞名,並經常從18世紀的繪畫中尋求靈感。 But she still found ways to shock: Her 1987 Statue of Liberty corset is remembered as the start of the “underwear as outerwear” trend. 但她仍找到了驚世駭俗的方式:她1987年的自由女神像緊身胸衣令人印象深刻,被認為是「內衣外穿」潮流的開端。Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2023/01/03/2003791866 Powered by Firstory Hosting

At the beginning of the 1990s, London's fashion scene was sleepy and small. But not for long: Following the groundbreaking success of young British designer John Galliano at Givenchy in the 1980s, other young graduates of the London art school Central Saint Martins began to push the fashion world's boundaries. Hussein Chalayan, Alexander McQueen, and Stella McCartney garnered attention with their provocative presentations, complex image-making, and challenges to established fashion rules, all on very limited budgets—at least at the beginning. Soon the Paris fashion establishment woke up to – and adopted – this new generation of fashion thinkers whose creativity had been forged in the post-punk cultural stew of 90s London.  Interviews in order of appearance: Mark Holgate, Anya Hindmarch, John Galliano, Hussein Chalayan, Camilla Nickerson, Laird Borelli-Persson, Karen Elson, Andrew Bolton, Shaun Leane, Jenny Capitain, Tonne Goodman, Stella McCartney.  For more on this week's episode and to access additional Vogue content, make sure to visit vogue.com/podcast. The Met Gala is an annual fundraiser for The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City. Each year it marks the opening of The Costume Institute's spring exhibition and is widely regarded as one of the most exclusive social events in the world. This year's theme is 'In America: An Anthology of Fashion', the second in the two-part exhibition. The exhibition follows 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion', which opened last year and remains on view with part two. This year the focus is on American fashion and Andrew Bolton, The Costume Institute's head curator, his team and curators from The Met's American Wing are working with film directors to create different cinematic scenes, installed as still vignettes across 13 period rooms. Each room depicts a different period of history in the world of American fashion. The nine film directors involved include Sofia Coppola, Martin Scorsese and last year's Oscar winner Chloé Zhao. Reporter, Kizzy Cox, has behind-the-scenes access shadowing the team, as they create the exhibition, bringing Andrew Bolton's vision to life. She also chats to film director Chloé Zhao about how she goes about creating the Shaker Retiring Room vignette.

In this episode, Jenni's husband, Andrew Bolton sits down with Jenni and her dad, Tony Jessee to discuss their journey of forgiveness. Thirteen years ago, Tony had an affair on his wife and chose to leave their family, and it sent Jenni on a very long journey of navigating forgiveness. They share the impact of this decision, the ups and downs of reconciling and rebuilding their relationship, and how they were able to with God's power chose forgiveness, both as the one who inflicted the hurt and the one who received the hurt. Bitterness and holding onto the pain of how people have wronged us eventually chokes us out too, and the enemy wants us to stay here so we don't step into all God has for us. This is why forgiveness is such a big deal, because it frees us from the power the person who hurt us has over us and protects us from the enemy ways of keeping us in bondage. We reference Lisa Terkeurst's new book, "Forgiving What You Can't Forget" many times because it is such a power house resource for all things forgiveness. She spent a thousand hours researching forgiveness in the Bible, and breaks it down so beautifully in this book. You can get a copy anywhere books are sold, and we are going to give away a copy this week on Instagram @herfightclub. The most powerful truth in forgiveness is that regardless if the person who hurt you choses reconciliation, you can still experience redemption through Jesus. You are not alone in all of the pain, heartache, guilt, and shame today. We hope this episode leaves you feeling seen in all your pain, and empowers you to look to God's Word on your journey to forgiveness in God's Power.

In this special presentation, we’re excited to bring you a new series from Vogue -- In Vogue: The 1990s. If you miss the 90s for all its nostalgia, fashion, and culture, you're going to love this episode on John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Hussein Chalayan, and Stella McCartney. At the beginning of the 1990s, London’s fashion scene was sleepy and small. But not for long: Following the groundbreaking success of young British designer John Galliano at Givenchy in the 1980s, other young graduates of the London art school Central Saint Martins began to push the fashion world’s boundaries. If you like what you hear, subscribe to In VOGUE: The 1990s now on your preferred podcast app: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/id1526206712 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4uJdNOg4EtQAqlnfxLo7wX Or wherever you get your podcasts. So, can Zion ever be realized? Andrew Bolton, former apostle of Community of Christ certainly likes to think so.

Few institutions are more equipped to peek in on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with more understanding, sympathy and even critique than the Community of Christ.  They too have been dealing the same history with which the Mormons have been struggling.   But they are a generation or two ahead of the Mormons, suffering the natural convolutions and troubles that come from any institutional reckoning.  As a result, they know what it means to pay the price for, and then to enjoy the spiritual liberation that comes from squaring up to your tradition's past sins. Andrew Bolton, a former apostle of the Community of Christ, joins me to discuss ‘the problem of Nauvoo.'

It's a week of controversy: Rachel Dolezal, the white woman who says she's black, is back in the public eye thanks to a Netflix documentary, The Rachel Divide. What trauma led to her fraudulent ‘transracial' identity? And why does Rachel refuse to back down? We called up gal-dem deputy editor and Guardian writer Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff to discuss the documentary - and whether or not Netflix were right to air it. Also on today's agenda: the glitzy annual Met Gala and it's ‘Catholic' theme, courtesy of Andrew Bolton's ‘Heavenly Bodies' exhibition. From Rihanna's papal mitre to Lena Waithe's politically charged rainbow cape, via Jared Leto dressed as Jesus (God complex, much?) the dress code might have been crassly interpreted and as camp as Christmas, but does that make it offensive? We run the full gamut of opinions.Last thing - the Chuckle Brothers have not fallen out. How does one begin to piece together an exhibition made up of more than 150 ensembles—dating from the early 20th century to today—that illustrate the dichotomy between handmade haute couture and machine-made fashion? Enter Andrew Bolton, the star curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Here, Bolton discusses everything from his plans to (once again) engage the viewer’s imagination in a temporary context with “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” to the Chanel Fall 2014 Couture “supermodern” bridal moment that inspired it all. The exhibition is set to open May 5, but you can tune in to episode 20, part one, now for a peek at what’s to come. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
